TV’s nail-biting season has arrived. Although most of the cancellation headlines continue to be focused on the continuing purge at big streamers and premium cablers like Showtime (R.I.P., Ziwe), attention has begun to shift to the beleaguered Big 5 broadcasters as the May upfronts draw closer.
Many in-limbo shows on our 2023 Renewal Scorecard are a lock to return (see: ABC’s Station 19 and The Conners), but there are a handful of high-profile series on ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC and The CW that remain very much on the bubble.
Take the seven shows featured below. The fate of each of them are hanging in the balance, and, in several instances, we’d be lying if we said we weren’t a little concerned. (OK, a lot concerned).

In its just-concluded debut season, the Hilary Swank-led drama averaged 5.4 million total viewers and a 0.4 demo rating (with Live+7 playback); out of the 10 dramas ABC has aired this TV season, it ranks No. 6 in audience but ties fellow freshman The Company You Keep for last in the demo. Current TVLine Renewal Scorecard prediction: It’s a long-shot for renewal.
UPDATE: Officially cancelled. While the “live” ratings for the ABC thriller’s third season were decidedly underwhelming, the show remains a monster in delayed viewing. Among total viewers, no current broadcast show nets a bigger DVR bump. Also, Deadline reports that series creator David E. Kelley has informed ABC that he would have a more hands-on role in a potential fourth season. Current TVLine Renewal Scorecard prediction: Could go either way.
UPDATE: Officially cancelled. Speaking of enviable delayed viewing stats, Mayim Bialik and Co. enjoyed in its just-ended third season one of the best DVR bumps of any broadcast comedy. UPDATE: Officially cancelled. Despite a huge marketing push, the Milo Ventimiglia-led romantic drama has drawn tepid linear and delayed ratings. Current TVLine Renewal Scorecard prediction: Could go either way (but inching closer to “long-shot.”)
UPDATE: Officially cancelled. Despite decent ratings, CBS’ freshman procedural is navigating some pesky red tape en route to a possible Season 2. Per Deadline, negotiations between the network and producer Warner Bros. have hit a snag over global streaming rights. Current TVLine Renewal Scorecard prediction: Could go either way.
The good news: Ratings for the ensemble sitcom’s now-wrapped Season 3 held steady. The worrisome news: ABC had the option to expand Season 3 from 13 to a full season’s 22 episodes but declined to exercise it. EP Michael Colton remains hopeful. “We’re planning to come back,” he recently told TVLine. “We have a lot more stories to tell.” Current TVLine Renewal Scorecard prediction: Could go either way.
UPDATE: Officially renewed. Gina Rodriguez’ freshman comedy did OK in the ratings in its rookie season. The question is: Will OK be enough to get the show to a second season. Current TVLine Renewal Scorecard prediction: Could go either way.
UPDATE No. 2: Officially renewed! UPDATE: Officially cancelled. The procedural, which TVLine readers recently named the bubble show they most want to see renewed, is averaging 6.8 million total viewers and a 0.7 demo rating (with Live+7 playback) — up in viewers and off just a tenth in the demo compared to its Season 5 tallies. Out of the 14 dramas that CBS has aired this TV season, it ranks No. 10 in total audience but is in a five-way tie for third in the demo, trailing only Fire Country and FBI. “There’s no reason why the show shouldn’t be picked up other than the economics of the business are changing,” EP Shawn Ryan reasoned to THR, “and CBS and [lead producer] Sony [Pictures Television] will or will not figure out a way to economically make a seventh season work.” Current TVLine Renewal Scorecard prediction: Could go either way.
UPDATE: Officially cancelled. Here’s the cold hard truth: The small screen adaptation of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s big screen smash has been DOA in the ratings. In its current debut season, it ranks as CBS’ least-watched, lowest-rated scripted program. Current TVLine Renewal Scorecard prediction: It’s a long-shot for renewal.
UPDATE: Officially renewed. Ten episodes into its inaugural 13-episode season, the rookie drama, with a 0.6 demo rating, ranks No. 4 among all new broadcast series (tied with the already renewed So Help Me Todd at CBS and Quantum Leap at NBC). Current TVLine Renewal Scorecard prediction: It’s a safe bet for renewal.
The network’s true bubble show roster primarily consists of the under-the-radar and very much in-limbo comedies American Auto, Grand Crew and Young Rock. Current TVLine Renewal Scorecard prediction for all three: Could go either way.
What’s left? The in-transition (and freshly golf obsessed) CW has seven five three shows still in-limbo: All American: Homecoming, Gotham Knights and Superman & Lois. Given that the OG All American is currently one of only two scripted CW shows confirmed to return next fall (the other being Walker), we suspect the network’s new owners are going to want to hang on to its sister series Homecoming and thus keep their successful Monday one-two punch intact. TVLine’s Renewal Scorecard similarly views Superman & Lois as a safe-ish bet, while Kung Fu could go either way and Walker Independence, The Winchesters and Kung-Fu have all just been cancelled.
Hate Big Sky. Wouldn’t mind a bit if it gets cancelled. Not dead Yet is funny and sweet. Hope it survives.

People are allowed to not like a series. it isn’t a bid deal. It isn’t a personal attack against anyone that might like the series.
I get that as the years go by, a lot of people are becoming more and more hypersensitive, which isn’t a good thing. It certainly isn’t a good thing for those individuals.
There is something good to be said for those who develop a thick skin, as thick as a rhinoceros. They tend to be happier and healthier, due to the fact that they don’t let others control their happiness. They don’t have rabbit ears.

Eventually, I think they will just turn into a reality show network and a network of old programming in general. Aren’t there some old HBO series showing up on TBS and TNT in rerun form?
I like Big Sky. Every year, it’s in danger of cancellation. And it always manages to survive, because it does so much better in delayed viewing. That may or may not change this year, but it’s a good show in my opinion.
FOX’s programming has always been weak compared to ABC, NBC and CBS. But once they sold 21st Century Fox’s assets to Disney in 2019, they screwed themselves. They lost 20th Television to Disney, forcing them to pay licensing fees to Disney for shows they used to own. And, they’ve had to license most of their shows from outside studios ever since.
They were already cancellation happy before then, but now they’re paying so many licensing fees, they almost need to cancel any show older than three seasons that’s not a smash hit. You’ll never see another show with Bones’ longevity.

I love Big Sky as well and hoping it does come back. I only watch ABC for my favorite shows like GH, The Rookie and Rookie Feds, Big Sky, Station 19, Grey. I only watch Fox to watch 9-1-1 shows and The Resident. I love my CBS shows lineup as well
I watch most of the shows that you do, but I watch the Chicago PD, MED, & FIRE. I rarely watch CBS shows unless they’re on Hulu.

Honestly this is the first year ever where I have spent more time watching YouTube and less time actually watching TV. Everything is backed up. Except for Grey’s Anatomy, The Good Doctor, Chicago Med (everything else got canceled) and A Million Little Things
I liked the first two seasons a lot, the last season less so, but still would like to see it and Alaska Daily come back. Although my liking a show is usually the kiss of death… :-(

There really is an air of narcissism in wanting a show cancelled because you don’t like it (as though it’s existence is somehow a personal insult aimed at the person commenting), instead of deciding not to watch it.
Additionally there’s something extremely arrogant about someone patronizingly expressing false “sorrow” that someone would dare to comment on that narcissistic attitude. It’s almost as though the “defender” is far mire interested in slinging an insult than her purported goal of defending someone’s right to express an opinion (while insulting someone else for expressing an opinion).

Love Will Trent & his quirkiness, Betty the dog. Really hope it gets renewed.Also want to continue to see The Company You Keep,Alaska Daily,Swat,East New York,Walker,and Big Sky. Big Sky could improve with shorter story arcs. I like True Lies but it would be better with a more serious tone and less campiness. If it came down to choosing between The Company You Keep and True Lies then True Lies would have to go. I’m tired of the 9-1-1 shows and the medical shows. Love Chicago PD, Magnum PI, Blue Bloods, the FBI trio, The NCIS shows, the original Law & Order…the other 2…not so much. Why can’t the reported new NCIS show with Michael Weatherly replace NCIS: Los Angeles on CBS. I hate streaming. Miss some really good shows on streaming services due to limited budget. Less reality shows or even better ….0.
Will Trent is awesome. He is the handsome, well-groomed, non-annoying Columbo. The emsemble is relatable without being syrupy. Betty steals every scene.
I enjoy watching all the tv shows that Margaret has mentioned except Big Sky. So disappointed that The Company You Keep, Alaska Daily, and East New York will not be returning. Many of my friends and family enjoyed these shows as well. Thank goodness I enjoy reading.

HBO showing up on TBS and TNT is a bit too obvious since they are all Warner controlled networks except HBOMax (changing to just Max) owned by Discovery+ through a shoddy deal that left subscribers feeling the cold shoulder for the price they’re paying. I imagine HBO stuff will eventually disappear now that it is becoming fully Max. It doesn’t even include any older Cinemax fare either not to mention the HBO/Warner entertainment had already been slash into half of what is in their archives.
I love Big Sky. It looks as though “Dean Winchester” is there to stay. (Fingers crossed!) I hope there’s a better season 4 though 3 was phenomenal with Reba and husband on cast it certainly could have benefited from a more “less all over the map” viewing. My favorites (not counting slect game shows) on ABC is this show plus Will Trent and The Rookie: Fed.

The way to improve Big Sky is to bring back Ronald. Or maybe he had a twin brother Donald that is seeking revenge on the lady cops. Either that or cast Edie Falco who would once again be the no-nonsense mother of the character Tonya. Then the show would be interesting again!

I so love a big Sky! However, I cannot watch it alone. It scares me to death! But it’s sooo good! And I hope there is serious backlash about cancelling Alaska Daily! The Back of Beyond/The Highway/Badlands by CJ Box are, like so many books that Hollywood has adapted, far superior to whats on the screen. The first two are great and the third kind of drags itself to a satisfying conclusion for this troika.

I love Big sky but sometimes it is hard to follow because they put gaps in the story for a couple weeks off at a time. Also love Alaska daily and home economics. One of the big problems with some of these shows is that they go up against other shows that are also really good so you have to make a choice unless you have recorded the show.

I love several of these shows, especially Home Economics and Not Dead Yet, but Alaska Daily is such a great show with a fantastic cast, serving a couple of important truths: the plight of ingenious women and journalism. Both are realities that need a critical look, whi is helping these women and what can be done? And as a 30 year newsroom veteran, I’m very critical of shows that think they are about journalism. Most of them are not, but Alaska Daily is hitting so many key notes about what is wrong with the news industry today. Thanks for getting it right, and trying to be honest about what newspapers are dealing with and how hard it is to tell important stories.

It is important and it speaks to the lack of character and integrity in our cultural consciousness. The network is reaffirming the despicable and heartbreaking practice of denial concerning the abuse and murder of native Amercan Women. The issue was given a forum and the network executives are sweeping it under the rug again.
Wonderful show with great writing! I guess there isn’t enough semi-nude bodies and explosions to keep a truly entertaining show like this on Television. A pity that so many missed out on the gem.

I totally agree about Alaska Daily. We need to know about the plight of Indigenous women. The episode with the white blogger who fell off a ship really emphasized the difference in publicity for her vs a missing Indigenous woman. I really hope they give it another season!

alaska daily is a terrific and point on show, important stories…well acted and also heartbreaking…love will trent too- engaging and flawed characters….used to like Big Sky but, typical ABC ,cant stand all the commercial breaks, even so,the show got off track and and veered into soap opera territory.

So many real journalists would kill to get into a newsroom that lets their reporters do their jobs, instead of chasing sensationalism and clicks.
Alaska Daily is the first show in a long time that tells it like it is, is relevant to the times, has fantastic acting, compelling stories, and the writers are so far above the rest of them out there.
This show should be allowed to get it’s legs and draw in more viewers instead of putting it on the chopping block before it’s had the time to grow.

I never worked in a newsroom. However, I did spend some time as a magazine editor out of college. And hope to see more of Alaska Daily for all the reasons that you mentioned.
That is the problem I find with the networks now…they tend to shy away from anything that makes the viewer actually contemplate the story lines. I watch less ans less network TV for this reason. I don’t need another spin-off of a cash cow (NCIS, any of the Chicagos, The Rookie, etc) or “reality TV” or remakes of previously aired shows. There is no more originality in TV anymore.

Alaska Daily is surely a keeper in that it tackled in the issue with indigenous young women’s plight in all of Alaska and the battle that our small newspaper outlets face on a daily basis. Hillary Swank playing her role perfectly is a key factor in my not missing this show weekly. I enjoyed the rest of the cast as well. All the new faces on this show was refreshing!

I totally agree with you on that. I really liked the first season of Big Sky, then the 2nd was ok but it competed with a different show i wanted to watch. Also most of the new shows on some networks might be really great shows, but when they put them in a time slot against heavy hitters they don’t do well. You can’t put a brand new show that nobody has seen against a show like Law & Order or the One Chicago night. It’s unfortunate because some of the shows could have a good audience if placed at a different time. I myself try to keep up with all the one’s I want to see on whichever streaming service it’s on, but that can get expensive i hate paying twice for something. So I mainly stick to my shows I’ve been watching for years and watch the others when I can. Everyone will never like all the same things in life, me and my husband don’t watch some of the same things.
Alaska Daily is a great show. If I was in charge I’d give it another season. It’s on late so I’d switch it to an hour earlier and see how it goes.

What about a donation drive? What i mean is, ppl contact the network and pledge to make a donation to the MMIW cause if they renew the show for a second season. Network gets free publicity, good will, good PR, and just maybe coverage of the drive would increase viewing and get the message out that much more? Just thinking out loud. Worth a try.

Hard to believe TCYK and Alaska Daily are up in the air when a couple of those sitcoms are probably going to get renewed. Really? We watched one of them one time and said never again.

I love “East New York” and its Steven Bochco-esque visuals (especially because it’s one neighborhood over from where I grew up). I find “So Help Me Todd” underwhelming and formulaic. I can’t help but think that not only does viewership for police procedurals skew older (and therefore less desirable for advertisers), but the fact that “ENY” has a mostly minority cast and a less reverential attitude towards police than “Blue Bloods” has advertisers worrying that its viewer demographic may lack sufficient purchasing power. Not just that, but I wonder if Marcia Gay Harden has more bargaining clout with CBS than do Jimmy Smits, Richard Kind and the (mostly-unknown) rest of the “ENY” cast.
It says right there the main issue is global streaming rights, not ratings or advertisers. Both CBS and Warner want to control the show out of the US.
I love East New York and Alaska Daily…both are well written with good story lines without boob tube trash of language and gratitutiuous sex
Agree totally with Jackie. Love the actors and writing of both East New York and Alaska Daily. Maybe NBC will pick up one or both shows and continue with the quality programing both offer. Come on let’s show our support with a letter writing campaign.

This goes along with my comment about not watching if you don’t like – I watched about halfway thru premiere of So Help Me, knew it wasn’t for me and haven’t watched since.
Both of these shows are terrible. Alaska daily is awesome!
East NY and Alaska Daily BOTH deserve a other season and the networks need to be patient. Well cast, well written, very important story lines. I love seeing LE doing the right thing–this show demonstrates the effectiveness of community policing, an idea that got lost after 9/11 & badly needs resurrected. And it’s positive.

True Lies is truly disappointing and terrible. No chemistry between the leads. A 17-year “top” spy whose wife figures out everything. And an in-shape man being told he can’t drink the coffee he likes, eat beef at a dinner. Yes, we all want to watch shows where the wife tells the husband what to do.
I agree with this, unfortunately. (The lack of realism started at the beginning, when we saw a civilian hold her own against trained fighters because she took suburban yoga and kickboxing classes. And then supposedly completed all the spy training she needed to conduct dangerous operations in a matter of weeks.)
What’s sad is that Matt Nix’s earlier show, “Burn Notice,” proved that spy stories could be entertaining and even silly, but still include realistic details about spycraft.
I would love to see SWAT and East New York renewed for another season. I enjoy watching them both and the cast.

I agree. SWAT, East New York, and, for me, Alaska Daily, are all shows which should be renewed!! I’ve tried watching True Lies, but it falls flat.

The only shows on this list that I would like to see renewed are S.W.A.T., Big Sky and Superman & Lois. I like Walker but am struggling with the dialog, it’s just off, not sure what happened from season one to now but it’s missing something. And the acting, don’t get me started on the acting. Which imho is a direct reflection of the poor dialog.
This season’s Walker has been ruined by the whole ‘Grey Flag’ thing which makes very little sense.
Big Sky, Superman & Lois and Gotham Knights. I haven’t seen any of the other shows.
I love Alaska Daily!! But all my shows that I like, usually get cancelled or they change so much I don’t watch them anymore (FBI MW). I also like East New York. Great stories and cast.

The only shows I watch on this list are S.W.A.T and The Company You Keep, so I do hope both are renewed. Sometimes life gets hectic and we don’t have a chance to watch a show right away, but it doesn’t mean we don’t enjoy it. For example, we had the first 3 episodes of The Company You Keep recorded before we were able to watch them, but now we are caught up and waiting for the upcoming one to air.
Agree with Will Trent and Alaska Daily! Big Sky is okay, but wish the bad guys didn’t outsmart the cops so much!

Really like Alaska Daily and East NY. Hope they get renewed. Tired of SWAT, disappointed in True Lies and The Company You Keep. Cannot stand Rookie, The Fed. How embarrassing for all involved. If I were FBI, I would be horrified by this program. Just started Rabbit Hole. Wow wow wow!
I hope ALASKA DAILY gets renewed. The cast is great, the story lines are interesting and the interaction between the cast makes the viewer care .

Of this list Alaska Daily and Will Trent are keepers. It takes more than 8 episodes to develop a massive following, but based on this commentary, these 2 shows already have a loyal audience. It’s easier to build on that than incurring all the costs of promoting a new show. Listen to your viewers. They are telling you what’s working.
Alaska Daily is so good! The writing is good and I love the cast. We’ll miss it if it goes.
Gotham Knights lost me after less than a half hour & I’ve been a lifelong Batman fan. Bad acting. Bad writing.
Just bad all the way around. The straw that broke my back…during police questioning a cop was told “Don’t dead name him”. Within 2 seconds GK was forgotten.

Love Will Trent, Home Economics, Not Dead Yet, Welcome to Flatch, Young Rock…..I also watch Big Sky, Call Me Kat, American Auto, Lopez v Lopez, and True Lies but don’t really care if they end. Young Rock basically wrapped up or ended well so I’m fine if that one ends now. The grandma is a hoot. Thought Flatch was a bubble show, too? Not mentioned in article.

I think Alaska Daily has important messages for us to take away and hope it doesn’t get cancelled. The 3rd season of Big Sky was the best and I hope there is another season!

I think Will Trent will get renewed, and I’m rooting for the Company You Keep to get a renewal, although it doesn’t seem super likely with the ratings. But it’s such a great show!!!! Unique plot, and amazing cast. I just wish it had been promoted more, or was on a different night. It doesn’t pair well with the lead in show either. And Sunday night shows just don’t seem perform well. But it’s my new favorite show.

“The Company You Keep” had me from the very beginning. But as usual as soon as I come across a show I like, you cancel it. I do not know anyone that watches Friday Night Smackdown.
