In the first batch of TV ratings from Premiere Week 2021, CBS’ NCIS led the night in total viewers, with its big move to Mondays, while NBC’s The Voice dominated in the demo.
In adjusted national ratings, NCIS opened Season 19 with 8.5 million total viewers and a 0.7 demo rating (and a TVLine reader grade “A-“), easily delivering Monday’s biggest audience and down just a tick from last season’s averages. Leading out of that, NCIS: Hawai’i debuted with the night’s third largest audience (6.6 mil) and a 0.5 rating — the strongest retention of any Monday newbie. (Read recap.)
Opening CBS’ night were The Neighborhood (5.3 mil/0.6, reader grade “B+”) and Bob Hearts Abishola (5.4 mil/0.5, reader grade “A”).
NBC’s The Voice season premiere (7.2 mil/1.1, read recap) was right on par with its Fall 2020 averages, and led Monday in the demo. Leading out of that, Ordinary Joe retained 3.9 mil and a 0.5 (read recap).
Elsewhere:
FOX | 9-1-1 returned to 5.1 mi/0.8 (reader grade “A-“). It was followed by the premiere of The Big Leap (1.5 mil/0.3), whose first two episodes released early on streaming.
ABC | Dancing With the Stars’ season opener (5.5 mil/0.9, read recap) placed second in the demo, while a Time 100 special did 1.8 mil/0.3.
THE CW | Roswell NM (470K/0.1) dropped some eyeballs while steady in the de,o.
In TVLine reader polls, The Big Leap averaged a grade of “B+,” with 86 percent planning to stay tuned… Ordinary Joe averaged a “B”/84 percent… and NCIS: Hawai’i averaged a “C-“/56 percent.

The Live+Same Day numbers reported in our ratings column do not reflect a show’s overall performance, given the increased use of delayed playback via DVR and streaming platforms, plus out-of-home viewing. Good job, NCIS and NCIS Hawaii
For the first time in longer than I can remember – even pre Covid – I sat down and watched an entire evening of programming. And all on one network.
It was wonderful!
I loved the CBS Monday lineup. I enjoyed each and every show and look forward to more Mondays like it.
The added frosting to the cupcake: I watched on Paramount+ which wasn’t affected by the numerous storms going through my area. Something I couldn’t do if I watched over the antenna. Worth Each and Every Penny!
I guess it wan’t NCIS with a 2-year break between seasons, as it was more like a 2-minute gap. And poor Fez doesn’t ever end up with the girl.
I watched the entire CBS lineup. Is B♡A Writing off Dele?
I thought NCIS Hawaii was OK, not great, but watchable.
Exactly how I felt.
I got a question that been on mind for a long time. There’s one Chicago, now one FBI, all three CSI’s had a crossover even though they didn’t air on the same night. What’s with the NCIS franchise. They could of have all three NCIS on the same night
They used to have that in the beginning but somewhere along the line LA and Nola branched out into their own universe. Its how all NCIS spin offs work a few character interactions here and there for the first few seasons then it spans off to its own continuity. Plus Mark Harmon hated the LA spin off and was against it from the jump Nola he was more open to since he was an EP. Hawaii like LA is its own thing.
I enjoyed NCIS.
I watched NCIS Hawaii it was blend, boring. I will not be watching NCIS Hawaii. Their are other programs more entertaining.
Agreed
NCIS was really good and suspenseful! NCIS: Hawai’i a let down.
Thanks for allowing me to air my opinion.
I have been postponing watching NCIS because I didn’t want to be disappointed as I have watched every episode and then watched from the beginning during lockdown. It was a good episode and I’ll take as little or as much Gibbs as Mark Harmon wants to give. Just like Hetty, as long as I know she’s around somewhere I’m ok.
Me too.
I thoroughly enjoyed the new shows “The Big Leap” and “Ordinary Joe” I don’t watch the Voice or DWTS or the NCIS. I am worried for these new show that they are stacked up against some stiff competition on a Monday night.
I also watched 9-1-1. Pretty good premier.
And apparently with all this Monday new action CW and Roswell didn’t make the early ratings reporting cut. But I am enjoying this season a lot.
Rosewell’s preliminary numbers came in at 0.1 Ratings and 0.49 total viewership.
You have great taste, Gerald! I too watched “Big Leap” and “Ordinary Joe” and would advise anyone tired of the same old, same old to give these two new programs with totally original premises a try. Also watched Roswell,N.M. Love me some Jeanine Mason!
Since I no longer watch DWTS, The Big Leap filled the dancing hole in my Monday nights. I also liked Ordinary Joe. Both shows are quirky, unconventional, and I liked them…so they’re probably going to be cancelled.
Also loved “The Big Leap” and “Ordinary Joe!” Something different and original. I thought they both were terrific and I will stay tuned in.
I also enjoyed The Big Leap, much to my surprise. Scott Foley is excellent and funny! Enjoyed the rest of the cast as well. I’ll have to check out Ordinary Joe.
Love all the NCIS shows…will not watch Dancing with the stars since they changed everything especially Tom B.
Wow, the ultimate sin for the NCIS world. Boring. Less-than-average writing. (Jumping into the ocean off a cliff at night? C’mon man. Ya gotta be kidding. That wasn’t dramatic, that was comedic) Lachey’s leaden line-reading. No way is she strong enough to carry a show. None of the characters are interesting. OK, maybe one. Could the tech agent bug out his eyes ANY more? Wow, creepy.
I never thought I’d find an NCIS show boring but Hawaii didn’t grab me at all. I also found that the lead actress sounded like she was line reading.
None of the others grabbed my attention either. I still don’t see the point of that one guy getting arrested. Were they trying to say he’s some kind of rebel, because the scene was confusing, and without any point that I could see.
Same with the “jump your bones” scene with Lucy and the obnoxious intelligence person. I guess they just had to advertise that they were ticking a box because they couldn’t work up to a reveal? Dumb….no purpose.
I really can’t see myself watching it again unless I hear that the plots have gotten better.
Oh, I forgot. The tech agent….I guess they had to find some way to make him different because the NCIS series as a whole seems to emphasize that if you’re smart you must be weird or comedic in some form. It’s like middle school and high school perpetuated. Laugh at the “nerds.”
These characters are so predictable. Higgins on Magnum, PI is a tech wizard, but at least she doesn’t follow the “weird” or “comedic” route.
agreed…all the NCIS shows are tired and predictable, sooo boring…time to retire the series
Good luck with that!
Big drop off for The Big Leap from 911, wonder how long Fox stick with it…
Many of us already watched the first 2 episodes on Hulu. Surely they will take that into account… fingers crossed!
Yep! I already watched the first 2 episodes on demand and loved it!
But the numbers rarely go up except for Empire season 1…
While the early release on Hulu and FOXNOW of the first 2 episodes very likely contributed to The Big Leap not having as many viewers tuned in as it would’ve if it had not—that ratings/viewership drop from 911 is truly YIKES territory .I honestly can’t recall such a drastic drop without some outside event disrupting viewership. For the sake of it’s fans hopefully the episodes following the first 2 go back up to at least respectable numbers in comparison.
Excuses, Excuses. It will be one of the first victims of the new television season.
I mean, yes it will be, but that doesn’t mean the comments above are just excuses. The programming did screw this show. I wonder if they wanted to kill it because someone had a backend or development deal they didn’t like (that’s why, and this is how, Disney screwed Scarlett Johansson on Black Widow).
Damn!!! I liked Big Leap
Good lord. Hard yikes for Fox.
It’s hard to evaluate The Big Leap without knowing how many people streamed it already, and we don’t get to see those numbers. At best, we may be told how many people watched five minutes of it, assuming Nielsen measures streaming where it was available (Fox.com, Hulu, some cable systems with Fox on demand). I still don’t know is Nielsen aggregates all the streaming of only does it by service.
NCIS was itself. Pretty nice.
I enjoyed NCIS and seeing that Gibbs might be back in the fold even if only sporadically. Disappoited in NCIS Hawaii – gratuitous cliff jumping at night, story jumped all over the place and Lachey is wooden – tries to hard show she’s the boss. I don’t like the way she talks to her kids either.
Good news for CBS- Not only does NCIS hold for #1 in scripted show viewership ,the entire CBS Monday night line-up went up in both ratings and viewership from the Preliminaries to the Finals. Not so good news for FOX-911 dropped in both (but still wound up on top in ratings for scripted shows) as for The Big Leap–those numbers were pitiful.
I really hope Gibbs doesn’t leave NCIS. This show is Gibbs and the rest are his team. The show will completely die if he leaves. Monday night’s first show of season 19 was great. So many people have come and gone on this show. Please don’t leave Gibbs.
A) I loved the Big Leap.
B) How can you not watch Scott Foley?? (But I also thoroughly enjoyed a lot of the other actors/characters.)
I found the actors on the NCIS HAWAI’I was below grading.
Not up to par with NCIS.
Perhaps they were trying too hard. The young man/Newby moving back to his parents and friends, seemed the most relaxed and real in his character. Thank you for asking our opinion.
I have zero interest in singing and even less in dancing. I loved Ordinary Joe. I’ll be following this one. NBC will have Tuesday (9-11), Wednesday and Thursday locked up!
I liked NCIS but I wasn’t really impressed with NCIS Hawaii. Who jumps off a cliff at night? And what was the point of the NCIS agent getting arrested? I hope next week has a better storyline than last night episode.
The first female special agent in charge was Laura Macy NCIS LA OSP
Not NCIS Hawaii
This has been addressed numerous times—-In NCIS LA, Laura Macy was OSP—the same position Hetty now occupies. But “G” Callen has always been the Special Agent in Charge—-the same position Jane Tennant holds.
I will probably wait to see if The Big Leap gets picked up for a second season before I fall in love with it and gets cancelled. Like how Zoeys Playlist got cancelled :(
I enjoyed watching CBS’s Monday night line up. I didn’t care for NCIS Hawaii though, hopefully it will get better as the episodes come.
