Fall TV Predictions For 2018-19 Season

THE ALEC BALDWIN SHOW

PREDICTION: Either due to awkward controversy (he's a bit of a tweeter!) or general disinterest, Baldwin's ABC talk show will be yanked off the schedule and fail to score a second-season renewal.

OUTCOME: The Alec Baldwin Show after four airings got banished to Saturdays, where it didn't even finish its freshman run. (Score So Far: 2-for-2)

ARROW

PREDICTION: Season 7 will open with Roy Harper, seven months into the future, being interrogated about the murder of Oliver Queen — and the rest of the story unfolds in flashbacks to the present.

OUTCOME: For one that we pulled out of our, er, quiver — informed only by the tease of a new narrative device plus Colton Haynes' peculiar Comic-Con comments — this one was oddly close-ish (Roy in a future timeline!). Indulge us one-quarter of a point. (Score So Far: 2.25-for-3)

BLINDSPOT

PREDICTION: Patterson and Rich Dotcom will drunkenly hook up before the fall finale, prompting a multi-episode arc in which they try to deny they have feelings for each other.

OUTCOME: The closest thing we got was Patterson's father (aka Bill Nye the Science Guy!) telling her she had chemistry with Rich — which she adamantly denied. (Score So Far: 2.25-for-4)

BRANDON VICTOR DIXON

PREDICTION: Fresh off his Power run and still buzzy after his electrifying Jesus Christ Superstar Live turn, the triple-threat actor will show up on at least three (3) primetime shows this season.

OUTCOME: We should be so lucky. Instead, BVD has simply booked a role on the upcoming Amazon anthology Modern Love. (Score So Far: 2.25-for-5)

GOLDEN GLOBES

PREDICTION: As if picking up Brooklyn Nine-Nine wasn't good enough, NBC will announce that Andy Samberg is hosting the January 2019 telecast.

OUTCOME: And host, he did! Alongside Sandra Oh.(Score So Far: 3.25-for-6)

CHARMED

PREDICTION: Naysayers will eventually come around to The CW's well-intended reboot... though not early enough to earn it a Season 2 renewal.

OUTCOME: Charmed actually started off strong (with 1.6 million viewers and a 0.5 demo rating), and then waned (ending Season 1 with 600K and a 0.2). But this was the year The CW renewed everything, so.... (Score So Far: 3.25-for-7)

CHICAGO FIRE

PREDICTION: Dawson and Casey's relationship status will stay murky for several episodes, until Casey finally decides to move on and file for divorce.

OUTCOME: Casey was as confused about his marital status as we were, even after Dawson packed up her stuff and headed back to Puerto Rico. But eventually, the couple finally signed the divorce papers. (Score So Far: 4.25-for-8)

CRAZY EX-GIRLFRIEND

PREDICTION: In a mea culpa of sorts for literally not recognizing Rachel Bloom at the Tonys, Neil Patrick Harris will guest-star (and sing!) at some point during the acclaimed comedy's farewell season.

OUTCOME: To paraphrase Barney Stinson, we were left to "wait for it." (Score So Far: 4.25-for-9)

DANCING WITH THE STARS

PREDICTION: Former Olympic gymnast Mary Lou Retton will prove herself to be a dark horse in Season 27 and will reach the finale alongside pro Sasha Farber.

OUTCOME: We did not stick this landing. Retton was ultimately the fifth contestant eliminated — though the season did have a very dark horse in eventual winner Bobby Bones. (Score So Far: 4.25-for-10)

FBI

PREDICTION: Buoyed by a strong lead-in in NCIS — and with CBS wanting to keep prolific producer Dick Wolf in their good graces — the Missy Peregrym-led drama will be the first series to earn a full-season pick-up.

OUTCOME: Ooooh, this was a barnburner. Though both freshman dramas were picked up for full seasons after just three airings, NBC's New Amsterdam got the good news one day sooner. (Score So Far: 4.25-for-11)

GREY'S ANATOMY

PREDICTION: DeLuca seemingly hit the sheets with Meredith in the first "Season of Love" trailer. But our money is on, of all people, Koracick to turn out to be the doctor for whom she ultimately falls. (Hey, showrunner Krista Vernoff did tell us that some of Grey's suitors would surprise us. And he is deeper than we at first imagined.)

OUTCOME: Our scorecard's vitals are getting critical. Mer in fact did wind up with Deluca, whereas Koracick was drawn to Teddy. (Score So Far: 4.25-for-12)

HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER

PREDICTION: The Keating Four student that won't get accepted into Annalise's third-year legal clinic? Laurel.

OUTCOME: Nope! That was Asher, much to his chagrin. (Score So Far: 4.25-for-14)

I FEEL BAD

PREDICTION: The Amy Poehler-produced comedy will struggle in its post-Will & Grace time slot, compromising lead-out SVU's numbers and forcing NBC to swap in the rescued Brooklyn Nine-Nine by November Sweeps. (Good thing they just ordered five more B99 episodes!)

OUTCOME: We do not feel bad about rounding our Score So Far up a bit, to 5-for-15, seeing as I Feel Bad's failure to earn a full season paved the way for B99 to return ASAP in the New Year.

LAST MAN STANDING

PREDICTION: Regardless of its Friday time slot, the sitcom revival's premiere will rate higher than at least half of Fox's earlier Premiere Week launches.

OUTCOME: Making its Fox debut with a 1.8 demo rating, LMS in fact topped everything on the network except for Empire's 1.9. (Score So Far: 6-for-16)

LETHAL WEAPON

PREDICTION: With potential love interest Riggs gone and newbie Cole likely to reunite with baby mama Natalie, Jordana Brewster's Dr. Cahill will completely vanish from the canvas by midseason.

OUTCOME: The doctor was out... by the second epsiode of the season. (Score So Far: 7-for-17)

SUPERGIRL

PREDICTION: Following this year's Arrowverse crossover, the CW drama will find a reason to bring Lois Lane (to be played by Grimm's Elizabeth Tulloch) into CatCo for an extended arc.

OUTCOME: More like CatNo, sadly. (Score So Far: 9.5-for-27)

SUPER BOWL LIII 

PREDICTION: CBS will announce in October that an episode of Magnum P.I. featuring a very special guest star will air after the Big Game on Feb. 3.

OUTCOME: When it came to making this particular prediction, we were not The World's Best. (Score So Far: 7-for-18)

MIDNIGHT, TEXAS

PREDICTION: The town's couples will break up in this order: Manfred/Creek, Joe/Chuy, Fiji/Bobo.

OUTCOME: It's almost scary how hard we nailed this one! (Score So Far: 8-for-19)

A MILLION LITTLE THINGS

PREDICTION: Though it is set in Boston, the ABC drama will go through its entire first season without featuring a single character who has the area's signature ("signatchah") accent.

OUTCOME: No characters of any significance had a Boston accent, and we can't think of any minor ones that did, either. (Starting Score: 1-for-1)

MODERN FAMILY

PREDICTION: The "significant character" to kick the bucket will be... Claire and Mitchell's mom DeDe (recurring guest star Shelley Long), sending the brother and sister to therapy to (amusingly) work through unresolved issues.

OUTCOME: DeDe did in fact go bye-bye, but Mitch and Claire seemed to handle it well. We bequeath ourselves partial credit. (Score So Far: 8.5-for-20)

MURPHY BROWN

PREDICTION: In an instance of history repeating itself, the CBS revival will inspire a less-than-glowing tweet from President Trump... which will then be addressed/mocked in an episode later this season.

OUTCOME: As hard as Murph and the gang trolled POTUS, this was somehow the one thing he did not angry-tweet about. (Score So Far: 8.5-for-21)

PARENTHOOD

PREDICTION: NBC will commission a two-hour, holiday-themed movie revival of the beloved family drama, to air in November 2019.

OUTCOME: Sadly missing from last Thanksgiving's menu. (Score So Far: 8.5-for-23)

RIVERDALE

PREDICTION: One of the teen soap's two central romances — Betty and Jughead, or Archie and Veronica — won't survive the end of 2018.

OUTCOME: Someone slide us a malt! "Varchie" went splitsville in the fall. (Score So Far: 9.5-for-24)

ROSWELL, NEW MEXICO

PREDICTION: Realizing that its clunky attempt at a name distinct from the original WB series is simply horrible for SEO (as well as, you know, clunky), The CW's midseason reboot will be retitled.

OUTCOME: Ha, our keyboards wish! (Score So Far: 9.5-for-26)

SEINFELD

PREDICTION: With Veep coming to a close and thus freeing up the last of the foursome, NBC will announce a limited-run revival this spring, with an eye on a 2020 premiere.

OUTCOME: Technically, "spring" doesn't end until June 21. Incomplete. (Score Holds at 9.5-for-26) 

SUPERSTORE

PREDICTION: As if Amy and Jonah need another obstacle, Amy will discover that she and Adam are expecting not one, but two babies. Yep, it's twins!

OUTCOME: Nope, it wasn't! (Score So Far: 9.5-for-28) 

THE NEIGHBORHOOD

PREDICTION: Kat Dennings will guest-star on 2 Broke Girls co-star Beth Behrs' rookie CBS sitcom, playing a new mail carrier who attempts to coax Behrs and Max Greenfield's married couple into having a threesome.

OUTCOME: This puts the "nay" in Neighborhood. Also: Gosh, that was highly specific of us. (Score So Far: 8.5-for-22)

THE ROOKIE

PREDICTION: Showing promise but hampered by soft lead-ins and strong drama competition, the Nathan Fillion starrer will be moved out of its Tuesdays-at-10 time slot by January.

OUTCOME: ABC actually stayed the course with this Tuesday Death Slot occupant — though it will move to Sundays for Season 2. (Score So Far: 9.5-for-25)

THE WALKING DEAD

PREDICTION: To facilitate Andrew Lincoln's exit, Rick will meet the grisly fate that the Whisperers dished out to several other principals in Robert Kirkman's comic-book series. Afterward, Michonne will step up and take his place as the leader of the quarrelsome communities.

OUTCOME: Rick (unbeknownst to his loved ones) survived and was gone before the time jump that led us to the Whisperers. And rather than lead the communities, Michonne separated Alexandria from the rest for years, before finally realizing the error of her ways.

Final Score: 9.5-for-29, or 33 percent

FRESH OFF THE BOAT

PREDICTION: Awkwafina will guest-star during a November sweeps episode of the ABC comedy, reuniting her with her Crazy Rich Asians BFF, Constance Wu.

OUTCOME: Would you settle for Jimmy O. Yang...? Nah, didn't think so. (Score So Far: 4.25-for-12)
