The Pearson saga perseveres in a big way: NBC has renewed This Is Us for Seasons 4, 5 and 6, the network announced Sunday.
The very popular family drama’s pickup was not a surprise, but the magnitude of it was. Each upcoming season will consist of 18 episodes; no decision has been made about whether Season 6 will be the show’s last.
The supersized renewal has been noted on TVLine’s Renewal Scorecard. (NBC’s just-released fall schedule is here.)

In Season 3, This Is Us averaged just over a 2.0 rating and 8.3 million viewers, down a disheartening 35 and 25 percent from its sophomore run but still leading all NBC dramas in the demo and only (barely) trailing Chicago Med in total audience.
Season 4, the first of the upcoming three newly ordered installments, likely will tackle Randall and Beth‘s move to Philadelphia (“I’m excited to write them in Season 4 in a way where they’re even in a healthier and more equal place as partners,” executive producer Isaac Aptaker told TVLine after the Season 3 finale). It also will offer more insight on the flash-forward that appears to show Jack’s brother, Nicky, sitting at Rebecca’s deathbed (the loose end of Nicky’s withdrawal from the family “could come around in a big, big way in Season 4,” star Justin Hartley recently said.)
What do you think about This Is Us‘ three-season renewal? Hit the comments to let us know!
Wasn’t it Rebecca dying at the end, not Beth?
Fixed!
It’s still reading as Beth to me; might need to correct again?
Nvm, showed up for me now!
This is incredible. Didn’t they previously state that they had a six-season plan for This Is Us? This’ll allow them to see it out.
Best renewal news all week
I hope they have a game plan now. Season one and two were strong, season three often felt like treading water.
Agreed. It was enjoyable enough, but still felt like a lot of filler which is never good. Especially in an already shortened season.
I love this show, but I really hope season 6 will be the last. Part of being a great show is knowing when to stop.
I think that they had said five to six seasons were the plan. So guess it’s six!
Completely agree! Go out on top. More shows should do it.
I figured something like this was going on since they hadn’t announced renewal yet.
Didn’t the creator said at the start of the show that they only want few seasons of the show so that the story doesn’t stretch out a lot ? Well I guess, just like every other show, money is more important than good story telling
He actually said he had about a five or six year plan so this seems about right
No, let’s just assume the worst so we can mock people for making money.
Hopefully 6 is it and they can chart out a whole plan that makes sense and reaches a satisfying conclusion
I’m happy that the show will be around for 3 more seasons but i’m surprised it will still air on NBC considering that Disney now owns this show (in case you don’t know 20th Century Fox TV distributes and produces the show which Disney now owns through the merger that was finalized a couple of months ago).
I think that’s why NBC renewed it for three seasons.
Other sources indicates season 6 is announced as the last season. But 1. as I always take the info from TVline I don’t know how serious other sources are and 2. in 3 years lot of things can happen.
Hopefully they downgrade Milo to recurring… it seems like they have covered most of Jack’s storyline.. i would rather they focus more on the time after his death rather than trying to force stuff in order to get him screentime.
I agree. I’ve lost interest in what happens to his character in his younger years.
Milo’s character has been dead since the beginning of the show. The whole premise is how this man’s life & death impacted his family. I, for one, would not watch the show if he was not on it.
They still have three potential years of his children’s lives to cover. I actually enjoy the episodes with the younger kids. Realistically, they need to bind Milo in for the three years, even if it isn’t every episode.
I thought I saw an interview before of Milo Ventomiglia talking about the show having a total of 6 seasons and they already knew it was happening and ending there.
Great… two more years watching the characters saying “I’m sorry” “No, I’m sorry” one to another.
Is someone forcing you to watch.
Is someone forcing you to answer me? The show had a promising beginning, but now it’s like a contest: who apologies the most? who cries the most? It’s my opinion. I’m sorry, baby! no, I’m sorry! No, I’am. I’m too! Let’s cry together.
I couldn’t help it — I answered, too ;-)
Why are you watching? Just curious ….
HARD. PASS! Quit midway through this season and only kicking myself I didn’t do it sooner.
I am thrilled. Love the show.
I wonder if this also lets them shoot the 3 seasons in 18 months or so so the children don’t age out of the roles.. always a problem esp since they go through time on this show.. They can use the child actors in one batch sprinkling the actual scenes over 3 seasons… Until they got a confirmed 3 season order, it wouldn’t work..
Isabelle, Mom’s Day!
Great News! I look forward to Tuesday nights all week- three more Seasons can’t be beat! Thumbs up to all those who make THIS IS US, the phenomenon it’s become! ‘ Terrific Mother’s Day Gift!’
3 seasons more for this waste of a show? Melodramatic over-acting, soap opera plots, and tedious repetition–the hallmarks of this garbage show.
I love the show but This is Us can’t go on forever. I hope season 6 is the last season. Don’t jump the shark for money!
Multi-season pickups are awesome. If only a network could give a three-year renewal to their in-house productions; I mean, the closest we’ve seen of such shows is just two seasons (for example, ABC with Grey’s Anatomy, CBS with NCIS).
I don’t know if season 6 should be the last for This is Us, its viewership will have to tank big-time for that to be possible. If This is Us were produced by Universal TV instead of 20th Century Fox, I bet NBC would keep it in first-run for as long as possible no matter what, even if it conflicted with the creators’ six-season vision. Regardless, at least This is Us will reach the 100-episode milestone before all is said and done.
Great news!
One thing I won’t have to agonize over! Thank you for that!
I love This is Us and I loved 30 Something. I stopped watching 30 Something because it got so depressing, a weekly downer. Please Ken Olin and writers, we need some “happy times”, thank you for let Kate’s baby live and let him grow up in a happy home, not one full of sadness. Looking forward to Seasons 4, 5 and 6.
Who are these people ?
This is maddening ?
Not a good beginning folks !!
We have waited for the new season all summer and you do this to us !
