Jeez. I know that people are talking about The Voice lows, but 6.6 million for American Idol’s last performance night is terrible. Last year’s Final 2 performance night was at 12 million. That’s a ridiculous drop. I know the ratings have been pretty low, but the episode was the lowest ratings ever, for finale or results. No one is mentioning that only the DWTS recap and The Voice recap were on against it. It’s not like they had the actual finales against them. I guess it’s because the ratings have been moderate-poor all year, but 6 million is really bad.

What I can’t understand is why ABC is so eager to get into the singing competition game. They’re always advertising that Rising Star show which I think will be DOA. People are tired of singing competition shows.

    • Stormy says:

idol’s numbers reflect America’s disgust with the blatant manipulation and also the disgusting over saturation of JLo closeups. They bussed everyone to promote Caleb and Jena and the drop in viewers shows that few are interested in them.

      • Flower says:

Totally agree about the blatant manipulation. I stopped watching AI back when Haley Reinhart was soo mistreated by JLo and the AI machine. That blatant manipulation was just too ugly. I want to enjoy watching a show, not be constantly enraged at it. The Voice also has some manipulation issues but not so overt as AI.

This ratings analysis pales in comparison to what Marc Berman reports every day. He’s the TV ratings man.

Especially during May finale week, who cares what shows up/down-ticked week-to-week. Year-to-year, like Marc reports, is far more telling of a show’s longevity.

  3. Sarah says:

Yikes, those aren’t good numbers for Idol. I guess we’ll see how the finale does tonight.

    • Stormy says:

I won’t be watching it. They pushed two losers into the finale. I’d rather watch a rerun of something than watch those two.

  4. The Voice did well considering how competitive the night was

    Strangely, no mention of this:

    (8 to 9 pm)
    American Idol 1.7 adults | 18-49 rating | 6.61 total
    The Voice -Recap 1.9 adults | 18-49 rating | 7.41 total
Dancing with the Stars -Recap 1.6 adults | 18-49 rating | 11.43 total

    • Matt Webb Mitovich says:

Yes, everyone — as “gnanow” kindly has denoted, a fresh IDOL placed second in the demo to a VOICE recap special (and barely beat out the DWTS recap special).

    • Name That Tune says:
More important - 6.61 million viewers. That's the fewest number of viewers in Idol history.
Last year, for top 2 night, there were 12 million viewers.
And the finale - where the winner is announced?
      14 million viewers.

“The Voice” hits a new finale low? Translation: primetime singing competitions have finally got the nail put in their coffin….mercifully.

  6. Monique says:

Dump fake Harry and bring back Surviving Jack!

  7. jenferner8 says:

I can’t believe somebody thought “Harry” was a good idea.

    • Brent says:

I can’t believe they’d think that anyone would be interested in a group of women stupid enough to think that the fourth in line to the British throne would appear on a cheap knock-off of The Bachelor. (Fake Harry seems a nice enough young chap, probably a bit brighter than Real Harry.)

  8. *lg* says:

American Idol did it to itself. Why would you air the show on a Tuesday when the whole season has been on Wednesday and Thursday nights!! I had no idea it was on last night until half way through the finale!

    • Spitey Spice says:

Excellent point. I didn’t know either until I saw Slezak’s recap here last night. I’m on the west coast, so I was able to catch the last half at least. I’d DVR it, but…meh.
