Ratings: Big Bang Hits Season Low, Grey's Slips, Idol and Surviving Jack's Finale Tick Up

105_MG_8105Seven Thursday shows were on the downside this week, as coverage of the NFL Draft on ESPN and The NFL Network spiked a good 50 percent year-to-year.

CBS’ The Big Bang Theory — which featured a big event — drew 14.2 million total viewers and a 3.7 rating, down 12 and 18 percent and hitting a season low in the demo. Leading out of that, The Millers (9.2 mil/2.0) and the Two and a Half Men finale (8.5 mil/2.1) lost a few eyeballs, while Bad Teacher (5.8 mil/1.3) and Elementary (7.5 mil/1.5) each dipped a tenth.

          • Maureen Gill says:

It’s so rare to have a show that the whole family can sit down and watch together. This was by far our favourite TV show. I hope Fox reconsiders or another network picks it up. Keeping our fingers crossed!

        • Elizabeth Gernert says:

I would hate to Surviving Jack disappear. My husband and I both enjoy it each week, in fact we look forward to it being on since its humor is wonderful and the antics are certainly something a lot of parents can probably relate to.

        • I love surviving jack. Please give it another chance. Way too many no brainer reality shows.

        • patsy says:

      Surviving Jack is hilarious!!

    • KeithH says:

Melino cah hook up with Cote de Pablo and do a show called “We’re not on those other shows anymore so get over it”. :)

    • Kathy C. says:

Surviving Jack needs another look by the network. This show is all full of win! PLEASE Fox, reconsider?

      • Stacie Thompson says:

I think it may the time slot that needs to be changed. I absolutely love Surviving Jack! His antics are hilarious!

Surviving Jack how I love this very funny show. Best comedy since
      (I love Lucy).

      • SAVE SUVIVING JACK. LET US LAUGH AT OURSEVES. We as adults CAN and DO relate to this show. Do not cancel it. You have already messed up with GLEE! Americans want to be able to sit down at night and watch something funny and refreshing. This world has gone to hell in a handbasket. We NEED to LAUGH again!

    • Anna says:

This is the first time I am posting anything ever. I am not here to say that Surviving Jack was the best thing ever and I can not live without it. However it is worth saying that there are few sitcoms on TV at this time worth watching. Surviving Jack was an easy laugh after a long day. No complicated plot and yet still enjoyable. It was one of the four shows I looked forward to seen and actually knew what time it came on. In reality I should be thankful to Fox now I can go on and forget you are actually a TV network.

    • Marie says:

Please save Surviving Jack!!! This show was so funny and refreshing! It was barely given a chance! 7 episodes? Really?

    • Slp says:

I agree I thought this was a great show way better than the stupid Brooklyn 99 I’m hoping some other station picks it up or Fox gets a clue and stop cancelling shows after only airing 3 episodes

    • Ruth says:

      Loved this show.

    • She She says:

If they would actually do a season of Big Bang Theory without 3 random re-runs between each new episode, it’s ratings would be high. Nobody wants to watch rerun after rerun.

  2. Elyse says:

TVD last night… WOW. Reign too. Should be interesting finales!

  3. Eric7740 says:

And Surviving Jack was cancelled because??? Higher numbers than Glee (and I’m a huge Glee fan!!!) and I’m sure much less expensive to produce. Someone please help me understand Fox’s logic???

  4. Lindsay says:

How does an awesome show like surviving jack get cut, but trash like, I wanna marry Harry see the light of day?! Great choice fox.

  5. David4 says:

Glee has music money and syndication money coming. Surviving Jack has neither. I don’t agree with Fox, but that’s why Glee is still around.

Mindy should have been canceled and Fox’s Tuesday lineup should have been… Raising Hope, Enlisted, B99 and New Girl. Then Surviving Jack could have been added in once Raising Hope ended.

    • Stacie says:

Glee’s 2.4 million or 2.2 million are still one of their highest rated shows. That’s bad on FOX but good for Glee. I do wonder how many episodes their final season would have. I can’t see them doing a full 22 episodes or a rumored 24. I’d say 12-16 would do the trick.

    • Sasha says:

      YES to the Tuesday lineup!!!

  6. Eric7740 says:

    I agree with you David4!!!

  7. mycatmidnite says:

i’m still so mad about Surviving Jack being cancelled…their numbers weren’t that bad, don’t understand why it was cancelled…..booooo hissssss

  8. Riana says:

I don’t think any of these ratings can be considered valid because of the draft. It would be unfortunate if a show got cancelled because of bad ratings last night.

  9. shuayb says:

What I don’t get about this whole thing: The Nielsen Ratings as well as general reception (to a lesser extent) determine the fate of a show. Right? But don’t advertisers know that not every American who watches these shows have a box. Don’t they count? Is there no model some statistician can create that gives Ad execs and Tv Honchos an idea of how many non nielsen box ppl watch prime time shows and can’t they count as well? O shows like Trophy Wife don’t get cancelled!!!
Anyways this mite all be simple and stupid but its just my thought.

    • tONY says:

      YOU’RE RIGHT!
The whole system is stupid…which proves all decisions are subjectional.

    • Ana says:

Of course, not everyone who watches TV can have a nielsen box because that’s not how statistics work. They take a valid sample and they use that to determine viewers. The criticism of Nielsen would be that it doesn’t account for other means of watching tv not that it doesn’t work at all.

  10. tONY says:

Bottom line guys…NETWORKS REALLY DON’T CARE ABOUT RATINGS!
IT’S BOTTOM LINE AD REVENUE THAT KEEP THE SHOW ON AIR.

  11. S says:

    Manziel took the viewers

    • May O'Dwyer says:

I watchedall episodes of Surviving Jack and the only reason was Chris Malonie, I thought it
was so clever that the comedy did not come thru.

  12. angela says:

please don’t cancel!!! we LOVE THIS SHOW!!!!!

  13. Kim R says:

They should give Jack more time. We didn’t see the first 2 episodes and then caught the third and really enjoyed it. Went back and watching the ones we missed and have be watching from then on. It is so funny. Great writing and casting. :)

  14. Craig Mitchell says:

Surviving Jack got so totally hosed. HYSTERICAL show…got no support from FOX..and followed an AMERICAN IDOL that was 3rd in it’s time period to TWO AND A HALF MEN and GREYS ANATOMY……a total FARCE…..and THE MILLERS is TERRIBLE…it lost a third of it’s lead in lead with TBBT…..Television is so messed up…. someone SAVE SURVIVING JACK!

  15. Amy says:

Maybe somebody can answer this for me: I don’t understand, how can so many shows get their season lows near their season endings? They’re the more exciting episodes so I’d expect more viewers, or at least a steady amount of viewers, not seasons lows.

    • Britt says:

I think May is just a busy time and less people are home watching tv. People are graduating, taking finals, on vacation, getting married/honeymooning, proms, etc. Plus the weather is nice, so I’m sure people in colder states are taking advantage of the nice weather. Plus I know a lot of people were worried about the NFL draft too last night.

  16. dman6015 says:

Yet Fox keeps crapfests like all of the Gordon Ramsay shows and dumps promising shows like Almost Human and Surviving Jack. B@$$t@rd$!

  17. DiverKlein says:

If the Event had been advertised i’m cetain it would have been the highest watched ever. “what do you need then? YOU you poptart!” it was both an awesome, and anti climatic proposal.

  18. In a world where viewers think Big Bang Theory is funny its little wonder quality real comedies like Surviving Jack don’t survive. At least Jack had seven great episodes..that’s still one more than most British series runs. Now there’s a thought..maybe the BBC can do a Surviving Jack remake….or is it only the US networks that can’t come up with anything original?

  19. Betty says:

Loved Surviving Jack, but I watched it on Hulu, where I watch most everything. This is how you do it when you graduated from high school in the early 90s and have kids with soccer and baseball during the week. Enjoyed the 90s aspect of the program.

  20. Pam says:

This is one of the funniest shows on TV and of course it has been cancelled. I don’t get it. Maybe someone should be reading these comments and listening to the viewers.
    BRING JACK BACK!

  21. Eric says:

Surviving Jack was one of the funniest and well written/acted shows on TV along with modern family. And that is saying something. I DVR everything. But this show made me watch it live. So I HAD to watch the commercials. If advertisers want people to actually watch the shows live, then write shows as well as this one and I will pay attention…and more likely to buy their products.
    Please bring back Jack.

  22. Relaxxx says:

If Surviving Jack gets cancelled I would love for Chris Meloni to play Negan in The Walking Dead! Where one door closes another one opens! FOX execs are not that bright! They have the patience of toddlers!

  23. Karey says:

As far as I’m concerned Surviving Jack was the only good thing Fox had going for it. Christopher Miloni is HILARIOUS in it. Where was the advertising for it?? I hope network that doesn’t have it’s head in its ass picks it up and continues with it.

  24. Virg says:

All I can say is bring Jack back that’s the best funniest show on what up with FOX anyway

  25. Eric Willard says:

Of course TBBT is dropping. CBS decided to OK 48 Hours to air the dying moments of a murdered woman even though family of the deceased and others had begged them not to air it. People have been boycotting CBS all together for it.
Plus too many people are comparing TBBT to Friends and they should NEVER be compared. They are slowly becoming the same show. I still love TBBT but won’t watch it on CBS any more.
I’e had zero desire to watch any of the other shows listed.

  26. acurat says:

Grey’s Anatomy drop should not be a suprise – Isiah Washington appeared on the show for the first time in over 7 years. It was to start the three episode send off for Sandra Oh’s character who is leaving the show on good terms (she is not dying off). She will be back on the show only when it ends, which will probably be in two years when it is ratings dead (next year will be the last – season 11, or season 12 if the ratings hold up).

  27. Kathy Nichols says:

SAVE Surviving Jack it is one of the funniest shows that I have seen in a long time. What in the world is Fox thinking!

  28. Bernadette Thompson says:

Surviving Jack was one of the best shows to hit Fox in a long time. I cannot believe this show got canceled. I am so disappointed. I am hoping some other network picks it up. It is a sure winner. Fox has made a really bad decision.

  29. Kathy C. says:

I’ve enjoyed Surviving Jack from the first episode. Great cast. Great writing and just plain funny. I’d be very sad to see it go.

  30. H Trice says:

Every time I find a show that I really like some network decides that it isn’t worth keeping. Surving Jack is by far one of the funniest shows on tv right now. Why would Fox decide to cancel rather than try it in a different time slot or day. With all the BS on tv right it was nice to have a really good, funny show that my wife and I can sit and watch with my kids. We would literally look forward to Thursday every week to watch it. SO A HILARIOUS SHOW.

  31. David Searl says:

My wife and I just watched the “something to talk about” for the SECOND time. We both laughed so hard we cryed. This is the funniest show in years. PLEASE fox, save it!

  32. melissa says:

well part of the reason a few of em dropped is cuz sites were already reporting that they were cancelled after the first season, so people probably figured why get invested in yet another tv show that will suddenly disappear and leave you hanging? I know I felt that way.i don’t get how there are so many garbage shows that stick around and so many that you could really get into don’t even get a chance at a 2nd season.and I don’t think they take into account that some of the new shows are in time slots that have them competing with shows that are huge fan favorites. to me it seems theres 3 days where everything I like is on and all at the same time, meanwhile the other 4 days there is absolutely nothing to watch. how about the networks stop worrying about being the top ratings dog on a select few days and give the new shows a fighting chance by airing them on the days where everything else stinks!

  33. GA says:

We are so sick & tired of the loud, lousy, annoying background music on all the network shows. Can anything be done about it?

  34. jonard says:

I loved watching Surviving Jack my wife and I have never laughed as much bring back the show.

  35. Barbara says:

Love Surviving Jack, great comedy! I don’ think it was given a chance. Meloni is awesome! Even my husband, who doesn’t normally watch TV watched this. Please add ar least another season.

  36. Jay Parker says:

The problem with these shows is they start off great them the writers change the formats. They need to fire the writers.

  37. This says:

Big Bang would nt have dropped like that if they would stop showing the 2013 season every thursday ,,,why not the show the new shows! We know they have them!

  38. Karen Broussard says:

Please bring back Surviving Jack. Love Chris Meloni. That show was great! So refreshing and funny.

  39. Fox is crazy if they let Surviving Jack go!!! I hope another network picks it up! I loved that show it was a show that made me laugh out loud. and we don’t have to many of those anymore. If there is anything we can do to keep it on TV I’m in!!!

  40. mary says:

I dont know who is doing the rating of this year, but I think someone off by a long shot! First they say NCIS IS LOW, now they are saying that the BIG BANG THEORY IS LOW! Now come on people!!

  41. Conie says:

Love Big Bang but sick of the cheap fat jokes and shallow storylines . Used to be so creative. What happened? Maybe it is time to end it.

  42. Janelle says:

Don’t cancel surviving jack…I finally watched TV and enjoyed it!
    Please don’t

  43. patsy says:

Shame on fox network. Surviving Jack was a Great show, funny refreshing, and some of the antic where close to some of the issues we can relate too. Hopefully another Network will pick it up PLEASE

  44. C. Sue says:

Fox you flinched too soon. Surviving Jack was a unique show that anyone with teenage kids appreciated. You put it on Friday and who is watching TV but adults with children or older adults. I laughed out loud and made sure I recorded it if I was working. Please reconsider!! I am so sick of reality shows, we never watch them, doesn’t matter what they are about. We love comedy and there is not much that is out there that is good, oh, except Surviving Jack. Find some way to bring it back. I had so many of my friends watching it.

  45. Rick says:

Surviving Jack was hilarious stupid to cancel it
