“Bitchin’” doesn’t even begin to cover this bit of news: Netflix on Monday announced that it has given a series order to an as-yet-untitled animated show set in the Duffer Brothers’ Stranger Things universe.
“We’ve always dreamed of an animated Stranger Things in the vein of the Saturday-morning cartoons that we grew up loving,” said the siblings, who’ll be executive-producing with Shawn Levy, Dan Cohen and Eric Robles, “and to see this dream realized has been absolutely thrilling. We couldn’t be more blown away by what Eric and his team have come up with — the scripts and artwork are incredible, and we can’t wait to share more with you.
“The adventure continues… ” they added.
Besides the animated offshoot, the Duffers have in the works a stage prequel to Stranger Things titled The First Shadow that will be unveiled in London’s West End in late 2023. And, of course, they still have the mothership’s landing to stick. As yet, there is no premiere date for the final season of the 1980s-set mega-hit that is Netflix’s most popular English-language series of all time. (Season 4 accumulated a whopping 1.35 billion viewing hours in its first 28 days.)
We probably shouldn’t expect an announcement about when Season 5 will drop anytime soon, either. Though the title of the first episode has already been revealed (find out all about it here), David Harbour, aka Jim Hopper, disclosed at the Middle East Film & Comic-Con in March that production on Stranger Things’ swan song won’t even get underway till summer. (Read what else he said here.)
So, your reaction the animated-series news? Do you suspect that it’s the spinoff that Finn Wolfhard (Mike) predicted?
Why ruin such a great series by making it animated? Such a waste!!!!!
Think of them separate and apart. The latter shouldn’t diminish the former.
Next, the voice cast announcement.
I think it’s unclear (at least for me), is this a continuation of Stranger Things with the same characters or is this a separate story with new characters in the same universe? I would prefer the latter because I want the final season to wrap up everything and if they intend to continue in cartoon form I could see them leaving some stories hanging. I’m not an avid watcher of the series. It’s way too graphic for me, but I do watch clips here and there and I read recaps to keep up to date. If I actually watched every season I would be annoyed if the stories weren’t wrapped up during the final season to leave room for this cartoon. That’s why I hope it’s a new set of characters and a new story.
Netflix is trying to stay relevant after Stranger Things finally ends. I imagine they’re worried about more members cancelling.
Bridgeton still exists also there is still season 2 of squid game and I don’t know what else there is
oh wait The Crown, but that’s ending too
I can see a Stranger Things cartoon, in the old Hanna-Barbera style. Dustin would have Dart for keeps here, and they’d get up to all kinds of wacky trouble.
But I hope they’re focusing on finishing the actual series. There are so many ways that it could go wrong, and some of them could damage rewatch potential.
or Dic (now Wildbrain) animation
Not sure about this idea. An expansion of the universe, with other characters, might be fun. But I have very interest in what, for example, Dusty’s life at summer camp was like, or things of that sort.
Animated is fine for 10 year olds but unfortunately for you Adults liked Stranger Things in real life format 👌
