WandaVision: 11 Burning Questions We Need Answered In The Upcoming Finale
WandaVision's end is imminent, and we can safely say we have just as many questions now as we did during our first trip to Westview. (Different questions, to be sure. But just as many.)
Rumored to be the longest installment of WandaVision's run, Episode 9 drops on Friday, March 5, wrapping up Marvel Studios' first TV series and setting the stage for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (hitting theaters in March 2022). And though Marvel boss Kevin Feige has left the door ever-so-slightly ajar for a second season of WandaVision down the road, we'll assume Friday's finale will be a series ender — and it has quite a few questions to answer before credits roll.
In the list below, we've gathered 11 loose plot threads we hope to see tied up in WandaVision's conclusion, against the backdrop of a potential Vision vs. Vision showdown inside the Hex. In fact, one of our queries involves the true intentions of S.W.O.R.D. director Tyler Hayward, who has not only reconstructed Vision as a sentient weapon, but seems to have a particularly extreme vendetta against Wanda.
We're also curious about Agatha Harkness' master plan after dubbing Wanda the Scarlet Witch in Episode 8, the whereabouts of Monica and "Fietro," and the potential for one (or more!) familiar face from the Marvel Cinematic Universe to pop in before the show wraps up.
Scroll down to see all the questions we hope are answered in WandaVision's final episode, then drop a comment with the unresolved storylines that are on your mind.
Secret Identities, Part 1: Who Is Jimmy's Witness?
During Monica Rambeau's first meeting with Jimmy Woo, Jimmy mentioned what brought him to Westview in the first place: Someone he'd placed in the Witness Protection Program had suddenly disappeared from the New Jersey town. We know the witness in question is a "he," but not even Jimmy's detailed bulletin board of Hex actors has revealed any further information about the man since Episode 4. It could have just been a throwaway line meant to explain Jimmy's presence on WandaVision, but we can't help wondering if that witness is someone more noteworthy — and perhaps someone we already know from the MCU.
Secret Identities, Part 2: Who Is Monica's Engineer Friend?
Similarly, when Monica concocted a safe way to get back into the Hex, she recruited the help of an aerospace engineer friend who could bring the plan to fruition. Monica was so excited to touch base with her friend that we had to assume it was someone recognizable from the Marvel comics; the leading fan theory was that Reed Richards (aka Mister Fantastic), a scientist and founding member of the Fantastic Four, would show up on the series as Monica's pal.
When it came time for Monica to climb into the armored rover that would send her back inside Westview, it wasn't Reed Richards — or any comic book character — that unveiled the machinery. Rather, a new character named Major Goodner met with Monica, and though Goodner does seem to have a history with the Rambeau family, she wasn't explicitly identified as the engineer to whom Monica had been referring. With Monica now back inside the Hex, it seems unlikely that an aerospace engineer would need to show up at this point in the story... but if that's the case, wasn't there an awful lot of build-up for nothing?
What's Hayward's Endgame?
Now that we've seen S.W.O.R.D.'s reconstructed Vision, Hayward's status as a villain has been cemented. But to what end? Turning Vision into a sentient weapon is one thing; it's another to frame Wanda as a terrorist and heavily edit S.W.O.R.D.'s security footage to insinuate that she stole Vision's corpse. With the stage set for a Vision vs. Vision fight in Friday's finale, we're curious to see what Hayward's Project Cataract fully entails, and why he's so hell-bent on taking down Wanda.
Also, What's Agatha's Endgame?
The all-too-catchy "Agatha All Along" theme song that ended Episode 7 seemed to suggest that Kathryn Hahn's character had a major, wicked plan in place for Westview and all of its mind-controlled residents; we even thought she might be the architect of the Hex instead of Wanda. But in the following installment, we learned Wanda was responsible for creating her own sitcom world, and Agatha was more of a fascinated bystander, desperate to know how Wanda could wield such power over an entire town.
In the Marvel comics, Agatha initially serves as a mentor to Wanda, helping her finesse her powers. But in WandaVision, is she merely serving as a conduit to introduce Wanda's Scarlet Witch moniker? Or does she have something bigger, and decidedly more sinister, in store?
Does Ralph Really Exist?
Speaking of Agatha, it's been a while since we heard about "my husband Ralph," eh? When we asked Hahn whether Agnes/Agatha's forever-offscreen hubby would ever make an appearance, she simply teased, "I don't know! You'll have to wait and see!" Of course, Episode 9 already has plenty of loose ends to tie up, and the introduction of Ralph — whomever he might be — could make things a little too bloated. Still, fan theories about Ralph's potential identity abound, leading us to wonder if he'll pop up before the episode is through.
Will Another Villain Be Introduced?
With Agatha and Director Hayward both in the mix, WandaVision has plenty of villainous plates spinning already — and yet, we can't shake the feeling that another baddie could get introduced in the season's final episode. Even with Wanda as the confirmed architect of Westview's alternate reality, even she doesn't seem to know how or why certain events in the town have transpired, prompting wild speculation on our part that another dastardly character could be pulling some of the strings.
What's That Big Casting Surprise?
Tied up in all of our questions about WandaVision's yet-to-be-revealed character identities and potential new villains is the fact that a fairly substantial (and likely fan-pleasing) cameo has been teased by the show's stars. Elizabeth Olsen previously told us she was "really excited" about an appearance that hadn't yet leaked, while Paul Bettany similarly teased the unleaked introduction of "this actor that I've always wanted to work with... I think people are going to be really excited."
Now that WandaVision has set up a Vision/Vision face-off, it's possible that Bettany was really trolling all of us, and the actor he finally got to share scenes with is actually... himself. Plus, the arrival of Evan Peters as Pietro — which now seems to have been a fun nod to Peters' version of Quicksilver in the X-Men films, rather than a formal introduction of the multiverse — was plenty buzzy already. Still, WandaVision is confirmed to tie in with the MCU's next Doctor Strange movie, keeping the door open for a finale appearance from Benedict Cumberbatch's character, or another familiar face from the films.
Where Are Monica and Pietro?
Last we saw Monica, in a mid-credits scene during Episode 7, she was about to investigate Agatha's enchanted basement when Pietro — er, Fietro — came up behind her and quipped, "Snoopers gonna snoop." But the pair was sidelined during Episode 8, leaving us to wonder what they've been up to while Wanda took her stroll down memory lane. Will Monica and Pietro have aligned? Or, since this faux-Pietro is really a puppet of Agatha's, does he pose a major threat?
What Happened Between Monica and Captain Marvel?
At the end of 2019's Captain Marvel flick, a young Monica (Akira Akbar) is seen beaming at Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) as she flies off to do some heroic interplanetary work. But sometime between that '90s-set movie and present day, Monica and Carol seem to have had a falling out, as evidenced by Monica's hurt facial expressions and haste to shut down any conversation about Captain Marvel the moment she comes up. Teyonah Parris, who plays Monica and is set to appear in Captain Marvel 2, would only tell us, "There's still a lot more story to be told" when asked if WandaVision will offer clarity on that relationship; here's hoping Episode 9 sheds a tiny bit more light on it, at least.
Does Dottie Have a Bigger Role to Play?
Emma Caulfield's Dottie was first introduced as Westview's queen bee, capable of making or breaking the reputation of anyone in town. But after Episode 2 — in which Dottie called Wanda out on her strange, magical behavior, then witnessed Jimmy Woo talking to Wanda through the radio — we've hardly seen her at all. In Episode 3, she was briefly seen at home with husband Phil, but has only made fleeting, wordless appearances since then. It's possible that after witnessing Wanda's strange experience with the pool radio, Dottie was intentionally sidelined by Wanda, who couldn't risk Dottie ruining the facade of a picture-perfect Westview. But Dottie seemed well-positioned to be a major foe for Wanda; might she return in a more significant capacity before it's all over?
Is Wanda a Mutant?
When Disney acquired 21st Century Fox in 2019, Marvel Studios finally snagged the film rights to X-Men; due to the sticky ownership issue, characters from the X-Men comics haven't been able to appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe until now. What's more, Episode 8 suggested that Wanda already had her powers as a young girl, even before she interacted with the Mind Stone, which ultimately amplified her inborn abilities. There's been quite a bit of fan speculation that WandaVision will act as X-Men's entry point into Marvel properties. Heading into Episode 9, we can't wait to learn more about Wanda's (mutant?) abilities, and how they tie into a larger narrative.
