Matt's Inside Line: Get Scoop On 9-1-1, Vampire Academy, Justice U, Leverage, Stargirl, The Rookie, L Word And More
What sort of proposal is on tap on 9-1-1? Will Justice U still be served for John Diggle? How will The Rookie handle his first rookie? Read on for answers to those questions plus scoop on many other shows. (You can and should email any brand-new Qs to InsideLine@tvline.com.)
Any fun teasers about what to expect on 9-1-1 this season? –Jamie
I am hearing that when Buck decides to embark on "a year of possibilities," he finds himself with a unexpected proposal from an old college roommate and his wife.... (That sounds "fun," right?)
Any Stargirl news about Courtney & Co., or maybe one of the newcomers? –Arthur
Court's romance with Cameron is about to start affecting her superhero life, and not for the better. As for "newcomers," viewers will soon be invited to put together puzzle pieces to learn who has been spying on Blue Valley via all those hidden cameras. (Oh! And next week's episode delivers another humdinger of a fight scene between two characters you were probably itching to see go at it.)
I'm really enjoying Vampire Academy and wondering if you have any scoop on what's in store for the remaining episodes? Especially for my new favorite 'ship, Rose and Dimitri. –Alexandra
"You know, true love is never easy, and there's no exception to that rule with this relationship. They definitely have some speed bumps ahead," series co-creator Julie Plec told us when we relayed your Q. "But they, as you have seen, have a lot of passion for each other and a lot of respect for each other. So I'm personally rooting for them quite a lot."
On Vampire Academy, will we learn if the Strigoi have a leader? –KoS
"We will learn something, yes. We will learn something," EP Julie Plec teases. "Something will be learned." Now I'm just spitballing here... but it sounds to me like something will be learned!
Legends of Tomorrow fan here! Any scoop on Lisseth Chavez's Rookie debut? –Claire
Chavez first appears this Sunday as Celina, a new rookie whose unconventional approach to police work will pose a unique challenge for her training officer — meaning, Nolan. "I've been saying from the very beginning, 'How do you keep it The Rookie?'" as Nolan graduates to T.O., says showrunner Alexi Hawley. "But he is going to become the oldest rookie training officer, right? And it won't go great at first. He'll have a rookie that's very challenging to him and who will have him on his heels. With any new job, things come at you 100 mph. It's just different."
What casino was The Rookie's Season 5 premiere filmed in? –Jim
That was the Morongo Casino Resort & Spa in Cabazon, Calif. And if there was any doubt it was an actual casino, you saw showgirls in feathered headdresses strolling outside. As they apparently do!
Please settle an argument. We are avid fans of Blue Bloods who never miss an episode, and we've noticed that someone says "forthwith" in every episode. It's a bit of an unusual word but I love the "old fashioned," grounded roots of the show. Is that a running joke with the writers? –Laura
As much as I love a highly specific Inside Line question, the people I bring them to tend to love them even more. Take Blue Bloods boss Kevin Wade, who let out the heartiest of laughs when I relayed your theory, before saying it is "absolutely not" any sort of joke within the writers' room. "We used to use [forthwith] a lot in the early, early seasons, because it's an incredibly arcane NYPD thing that's actually still used. We were always like, 'Nooo, some guy on the street with a cup of coffee and a donut is saying, 'Yeah, do that forthwith?' We use it occasionally, but this reader is perhaps thinking we use it more than we do. I think I would know, because it always bumps a little for me when I hear it, then I go, 'Alright, it's authentic — leave it.'"
Are we ever going to see Kyle again on The Resident? — Lauren
Series co-creator Amy Holden Jones agrees "it would be a great thing" to stage a reconciliation between Conrad and Nic's father, who left things on frosty terms after Nic's fatal accident in Season 5. Alas, "it's not the story of this season, partly because of [Corbin Bernsen's] availability," she shares. "But he's still Gigi's grandfather, so yes, I would like to bring him back. I love the character."
Do you have any updates on Leverage: Redemption Season 2? Maybe about any guest stars? –Rachel
Our Season 2 date/trailer reveal included a smattering of guest castings, a few of which I can elaborate on here. Doug Savant (Desperate Housewives) is playing the Oklahoma Attorney General, who has all the makings for loftier political office, while She-Hulk's boss, Steve Coulter, will pop up as an aging British rock god whose neighbor is involved in a kidnapping.
How many episodes will Aldis Hodge be in this season of Leverage: Redemption? Hopefully more than the two we got in Season 1. –Big Mike
I am hearing that his presence will be akin to Season 1.
In the fourth episode of The Flash Season 7, Abra Kadabra name-dropped "The Chronarch" when taunting Flash, saying that he would be doing him a favour by killing him right there rather than ever facing that foe. Is that an abandoned thread or will it be addressed in the final season? –Gonzalo
Funny you should ask this particular question, because last season's finale actually had a callback to that Easter egg, but it got cut — and TVLine soon will have an exclusive peek at that very curious, deleted scene....
Any newer updates on Justice U, given all the changes going on at The CW and Warner Bros. [Discovery]? –Greg
David Ramsey told us just this past Saturday night (at a gala honoring Greg Berlanti's mom and benefitting F–k Cancer) that "we're on the second draft of a script, and we just closed the deal on a writer. I'm not sure I can say her name, so I won't, but we're very close to submitting our second draft. It's still in development, and we're moving forward."
I'm glad and all that Good Trouble is renewed for a Season 5, but has there been any talk of an "end point"? –Deb
In a word, no. "Luckily, I haven't been asked to write to a series finale yet," showrunner Joanna Johnson shared with us. "I still think these characters have a lot of growing to do and they're still in their 20s. They have a lot of discovery to do, and they have a lot of love to share with each other. And one of the themes of Season 5 is going to be sort of 'lean on me,' and how they lean on each other in times that are so uncertain. And that's what I think is nice about this show and I think one of the reasons people want to tune in: They want to see this chosen family, and they want to see them be there for each other."
I'm so excited for AMC's Mayfair Witches series, more so than Interview with a Vampire. I see the cast but where is Michael Curry? He's huge in the series! –Virginia
I am told that while Michael Curry very much is a character from the book, he is not (currently) part of the upcoming AMC adaptation.
I know she "just" left, but is there any chance we'll see Lindsey Morgan back on Walker as Micki? –Ellen
There "have not" yet been any such discussions, showrunner Anna Fricke tells us, "but we're on such good terms with Lindsey and we really supported how and why she wanted to leave. She always has a close place to me in my heart, and obviously I wrote that character for her, so the door is always open."
Any buzz on the upcoming season of The L Word: Generation Q? –Sia
We recently ran into a few cast members, and Jordan Hall, for one, said that Angie, now age 18 in Season 3, "will tackle young adulthood, and her relationship with her moms will thicken." Jillian Mercado, meanwhile, said that "drama, drama drama!" (as well as "life-altering decisions") are on tap for Maribel when Season 3 arrives on Nov. 20. "All of the questions [from last season] will be answered," Mercado said, and "a lot of beautiful romances and relationships and real-life experiences will be told."
