Fall TV Preview

Hawaii Five-0 Casts Emmy Winner Christine Lahti as McGarrett's Mother

Mom’s the word for Emmy and Academy Award winner Christine Lahti, who has landed the recurring role of Steve McGarrett’s heretofore believed dead mother on CBS’ Hawaii Five-0.

“The mysterious character of Doris McGarrett is a pivotal one to the mythology of our show,” showrunner Peter Lenkov says of the casting, “and we are thrilled to have a seasoned and beloved actress such as Christine to portray her. She’s a wonderful addition to the H50 family and the fans will certainly enjoy what we have in store for her. Let’s just say that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.”

Lahti will make her Five-0 debut in the Season 3 premiere, which as previously reported will allow viewers to witness the most unexpected reunion between Steve and the mysterious “Shelburne” aka Mom, which was teased at the very close of last May’s finale. “[Next season] really picks up a second later,” Lenkov has said.

Lahti’s Emmy came via her run on Chicago Hope, where over five years she earned a total of four nods. Her other TV credits include (yet are not limited to!) Jack & Bobby, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.

Her film roles, meanwhile, include Swing Shift (which netted her an Oscar nom), Whose Life Is It Anyway? and Lieberman in Love, which she also directed and earned her an Academy Award in the Best Live Action Short category.

Are you looking forward to McGarrett meeting up with his momma?

    Great news, thank you!!

  2. april-ann says:

Smart move, great casting. Love Christine Lahti. She is a standout in everything I’ve seen her in. All these years later, I’m still bugged that Jack and Bobby was so short-lived.

  3. Lorie says:

    Excellent choice!

  4. This is excellent news! Congratulations and best wishes to Christine Lahti on Hawaii Five-0.

  5. Swift says:

She was on Chicago Hope for four years. She was introduced in the season 2 Premiere and her character, Kate Austin, was fired in the season 5 finale. She did not return for season 6. She never missed a lead actress nod so please correct that.

  6. JuliaS says:

Thrilled with everything… except the name! Doris? Really? Love her, can’t wait to see this great development in Steve’s character too.

  7. Lena120 says:

I LOVE Christine Lahti. I know a lot of folks were fans of her on Chicago Hope, but I preferred her as a drunk attorney on SVU. Loved seeing her and Elliot butt heads.

    • Maggie says:

i second that, I thought she was excellent on SVU, I much preferred her to Sharon Stone’s character, I believed her more

  8. Joshua says:

Nice use of the word “heretofore”.

  9. TJ says:

Um, ewwwwwwwwww! Besides not liking her, was Doris like 15 when she had Steve?

    • daniac says:

According to IMDB Lahti was born in 1950 and O’Loughlin was born in 1976. Certainly outside the age ick factor.

  10. The Squatch says:

The casting is fine. The actual storyline on the other hand…

  11. Amy says:

I don’t mind Christine Lahti having this part as I think she’s a fine actress. But she’s a little too young for the part don’t ya think?

  12. Jaimie says:

@TJ and everone else who says she is too young. The actress was born 1950. Alex O’Loughlin was born 1976.

That makes her 26 at the time.

  13. sarah says:

    I like the casting..
How hot is Alex in the photo above!!?!?

  14. Ella says:

Ah, she was fantastic, albeit a tad annoying, on SVU. Look forward to seeing her on Five-O!

  15. E says:

Alex hot. Christine – ugh. Not right

  16. Cyn says:

So many actresses would be better suited for this role. She’s plenty old enough at 62 but someone more mysterious and sexy would have been much appreciated. She is too celebral for the part.
