Warning: The following contains spoilers about Season 6, Episode 20 of ABC‘s The Good Doctor. [pmc_inline_gallery]
How’s this for a curveball?
During Monday’s episode of The Good Doctor, Shaun got to the bottom of Dr. Glassman’s memory impairment — and we’ll admit, we were genuinely surprised by his findings. After scans ruled out a recurrence of brain cancer, we assumed a dementia diagnosis was nigh. But as Shaun revealed to Lim, his surrogate father is actually dealing with the irreversible side effects of a ministroke — which, coupled with the radiation Glassman underwent for his glioblastoma in Season 2, has created a hole in his brain. “It explains why his memory has been impacted, especially during periods of intense focus involving many sequential steps,” Shaun explained.
The good news is that Glassman is not dying. The bad news is that the renowned brain surgeon is unlikely to operate ever again. How he deals with that should be interesting, to say the least.
Among other notable developments in Season 6’s third-to-last episode…
* After the hospital’s social worker was unable to find a family willing to foster a baby with Turner syndrome, Morgan stepped up and took Eden home. She later told Park that she was stopping her IVF meds because, and we quote, “Eden is what I’ve been waiting for. She’s my daughter.” Should the adoption process prove more challenging than expected — Eden’s birth father is totally gonna show up at some point, right? — perhaps Shaun can put Morgan in touch with Joni DeGroot.
* Losing a beloved patient helped Andrews see that he’s spent most of his life believing that success only comes from constant striving — and now he wants to change. Will that level of inward reflection cause him to throw up his hands and walk away if the board challenges his position as president of St. Bonaventure? We’ll see! In the meantime, Andrews has been given a second chance by Nurse Villanueva.
* The Jordan/Danny/Jared love triangle is no more. By episode’s end, Jordan and Danny had determined that they are “gifts” to each other. They’re still not sure exactly what that means, but we are. They’ll be coupled up by season’s end.
* Lastly, just when it seemed like Jerome was ready to end things with Asher, Dr. Wolke went and confronted his boyfriend in front of all his friends. He admitted that he frequently loses sight of what’s important and promised that he’s done taking his boyfriend for granted.

I feel sad, because it looks like Shaun and Glassy are going to have a very serious falling out before the baby is born. I would hate to see Glassy miss out on being a grandfather, he had really been looking forward to that. I hope Glassy can come to terms with the fact that he is going to have to retire, and even come to enjoy retirement. Maybe the baby will help bring them back together.
When is Lea going to have the baby, anyway? In tonight’s episode, she looked like she could pop at any minute. I bet they have her go into labor at the end of the season finale, and then we have to wait until season 7 in the fall for her to give birth.
Eden has definitely softened Morgan. I wonder if she and Park will get back together.
I don’t want Asher and Jerome to break up, I love them together.
At first Asher and Jerome’s fight seemed to indicate a breakup, but I’m thinking a proposal is coming now. But yeah, they might want to find better times to make their feelings heard – Jerome dumping that ‘so I’m staying at my place tonight” thing on Asher right as he’s dealing with losing a patient, and Asher crashing Jerome’s night out with his friends… Timing, guys :p.
.
I’m glad that the explanation for Glassman’s issues isn’t cancer or dementia, but that’s still a pretty wild and sad diagnosis in and of itself. And if Glassman can’t do surgeries anymore, then…what does that mean for him and his time at the hospital going forward?
.
As for everything with Morgan, I’m just continuing the countdown to her and Park getting back together – looks like this stuff with the baby may be the catalyst for that.
.
I’m glad Jordan and Daniel came to a better understanding :). I hope Jared is still going to stick around, though.
Shaun is in a very tough spot, but going to Lim before Glassman was not OK. At least get some form of verification, or failing that help walk him through the concern before involving his boss. The loss of agency can feel worse than the diagnosis itself. Maybe Glassman when presented with the evidence would have opted to retire. Granted it isn’t likely, but it likely goes down better than what actually happened.
.
Glassman might hate Shaun’s choices for a while. But, Shaun is still his only family. He is still the young boy that he mentored and groomed for a career in surgery. The same man who stood by him through cancer, and his house burning down, and every other bad day for the last 15+ years. Shaun is still the son who begged him to take care of himself so that he can be a grandfather. All in all, it should take more than this to break that bond. However, that doesn’t mean Glassman doesn’t have the right to be pissed and need a break from Shaun. He just needs to keep the situation in its proper prospective.
This is such an amazing show. Great stories, with great acting, and they touch on things that happen in real life. I honestly think Jordan overacts a bit and they need to back down on that some. Her faces seem very phony. Freddie is absolutely the best. Just a wonderful show…
I love the program and almost every character…especially Glassy.
Love this show. Can’t wait for the next episode/season. At times, it feels so real
I don’t think I will be watching it anymore if Glassy can’t do surgeons. Very sad.
He can still teach and assist on surgeries (even if he is hands off.) Also, he didn’t do surgery in season 1 or 2. The character is so much more than the case of the week. I could even see him returning to the presidency once Hill Harper (who play Andrews,) leaves for his political run. This is far from the end of Glassman.
U will keep watching
I was so proud of the team when Andrew’s patient DIDN’T code on the table…. eh so much for that.
I’ve NEVER seen a hospital nearly lose *every. Single.patient* not sure I’d trust “the best brain surgeon in the world” at a place where EVERYONE codes! 🤦♀️ Aye!
Ha ha ha. So true. Everyone codes on this show, even if they have a cold !
Best show emmys all around
But they never seem to be nominated.
Yeah as he was never nominated for bates motel or this and he should have multiple Emmy’s just like James spader for the early season’s of the blacklist and he should’ve won an Emmy for the mock speech he gave at the un as that was probably one of the funniest things ever on the blacklist
How about Glassman becomes Hospital president? He can’t do surgery but he can still run the hospital. He was president before in Season 1 so he knows what he’s doing. Seems like a good transition for his character with Andrews likely departure.
Love this show!!!
I love every episode. I can’t wait for the next one.
I love this show !
