The fifth and final season of Stranger Things is further away than ever.
On Saturday, co-creators and co-showrunners Matt and Ross Duffer, known as the Duffer Brothers, announced on Twitter that production on Season 5 has been shut down due to the Hollywood writers’ strike.
“Writing does not stop when filming begins,” the brothers wrote. “While we’re excited to start production with our amazing cast and crew, it is not possible during this strike. We hope a fair deal is reached soon so we can all get back to work. Until then — over and out.”
Fans have long been waiting for the final season of the Netflix series, which was set to begin shooting this summer. Season 4 finished airing on Netflix in July 2022. In November, the Duffer Brothers shared a teaser, announcing the Season 5 premiere episode title, “Chapter One: The Crawl” as part of the annual “Stranger Things Day” celebration.
TV programming has been disrupted since the Writers Guild of America officially went on strike on Tuesday, May 2 after talks with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers broke down despite months of negotiation.
The strike’s first ripples have already been felt by late-night talk shows, which went dark the day the strike began. Saturday Night Live has cancelled its final three shows of Season 48, which would’ve been hosted by Pete Davidson, Kieran Culkin and Jennifer Coolidge.
It will get here when it gets here. Stranger Things is in my top 5 favorite shows of all time, so if I need to wait a little longer, it won’t kill me.
Respect to the Duffers for doing the right thing. I’m content to wait.
100% agree. They ended their tweet with #wgastrong
Wish they didn’t have to sabotage their own show though. those kids arent getting any younger.
Doing the right thing isn’t sabotage.
If it hurts the show then it is sabotaging the show.
The definition is to deliberately destroy, damage, or obstruct (something), especially for political or military advantage. They aren’t deliberately doing anything to their show. They have no writers… And like they explain, the writing doesn’t stop just because they are shooting the show.
This doesn’t hurt the show. It’s not mid season filming.
Stranger Things is going to take 10 years to air 5 seasons.
It’s already been almost ten years. The actors playing the kids will be 30 by the time it’s finished. It’s first year was 2016.
I get why it’s delayed but if they soon don’t get a move on things the younger cast are going to age out of their roles, not they they already haven’t mind you.
If you can buy that there is a Faceless Mind Flayer terrorizing a small town in the 1980s, then you can probably still buy that a character is 18 even if the actor is 24.
That’s the problem though…they’re not 18. Based on their ages in S1 they were supposed to be HS freshman last season. And it’s not like your typical teenage show where 16 year olds are actually being played by 20 somethings. These “kids” have grown up before our eyes season over season and trying to pretend they’re still “kids” is getting to the point of ridiculousness.
I have a feeling they’ll have to pull a Force 10 from Navarone and recast (Force 10 from Navarone which was made 17 years after Guns of Nanarone had to recast all the major characters due to GON’s cast being too old to reprise their roles). Guess this also means One Piece Live Action is going to be delayed to next year to take Stranger Things 5’s place
Even if they do age there’s amazing things cgi can do
Totally in support of their decision. #wgastrong
.
However, between this delay, and the earlier delays to Season 4 from COVID, and basic puberty, this HAS to force a significant time-jump between seasons, yes?
I believe they were planning a bit of a time jump for Season 5.
Personally it’s their own fault it’s ridiculous they took this long to get this going they’ve had such a long time and a lot of other shows have a much shorter turn around
Their own fault? SERIOUSLY,So Covid had nothing to do with filming? So please do tell us how it is Their fault ?
Season 2 came out July 2019. By March 2020, they should be in post with season 4. For most of its run, Game of Thrones delivered a season a year. Many shows deliver 20+ episodes a year. By March 2020, season 4 should have wrapped principal photography.
Plenty of time during Covid to have written S05
Streamers need to start filming seasons back to back. They only do roughly 6-10 eps now anyway. Still less than a traditional season was.
Not a bad shout to order two seasons to start with. Then allows the growth factor.
How are they going to be able to maintain the consistency of school kids, well teens as they are all looking very much like they are in their twenties????
By the time those kids film this final season Joe Keeny will be in his thirties and all the kids will be old enough to drink.
I get the concerns but its very funny you say that because Joe Keery is already 31 (born april 1992) and Gaten Matarazzo (Dustin) turned 20 during promotions for S4 (born September 2000) lmao
Have the people complaining about the kids getting older never seen a teen drama? Nothing new at all about 20-somethings playing teens. It’ll be fine.
This is different. They were 11-14 during S1. That was 6 years ago and during a time when kids go from looking like a child to looking like a young adult. This isn’t 90210 where most of the 16 year olds were played by 20 something adults from the beginning.
At this point, who cares? With the seasons so spread apart by the time this last season came out, I couldn’t get past the second episode without having to review it from the start, and when you factor in the “kids” ages, it didn’t make any sense. For me it went from being one of the best shows I’d ever seen to not making ant sense. To much time has gone by for it to still be the 80’s, and the actors (M.B. Brown etc) have grown to the point that they lost the story ark when season 3 came out. The kids aged 5 years in a one show year time span. I don’t know the reasoning behind the long spans between seasons, but they ruined the show by doing it that way. Just my opinion, I know people still watch it, but it’s no longer “all” that everyone is talking about.
Yea no your totally wrong season 4 was the best yet and i expect season 5 to be the best one out of the series cant wait to watch it.
Lol. I didn’t think they could top Season 3, but Season 4 was groundbreaking. I wasn’t even a huge fan of ST until S3. I trust S5 will be epic as well.
I hope it’s out before Christmas I only watched them all last year and loved them it’s the most strangest thing I’ve ever seen the graphics are brilliant and the storylines are edge of the seat want to see it 😁 great producers good imagination and the strangest haha
stranger things can be kept back for as long as they want , it’s repetitive.
don’t know why a talk show would stop a talk show , can’t they just ask questions ,and Saturday night live aswell .
shows how much scripted rubbish is on tv
If you think talk show hosts ad lib and/or write all of their own jokes you don’t know how tv works.
Maybe they should’ve killed off the older series regular characters and have a more streamlined Final Season at this point? Why overload the Show with this many Series Regular characters and actors if you’re not getting rid of the older ones first? First In, First Out!
I get it and have no issue with their decision, but I seriously hope they’re planning a time jump on this last season. It was already getting ridiculous last season with how much the “kids” have matured since S1.
