Amazon is demanding another encore from The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel: The streamer has renewed its crown jewel comedy for a fourth season.
The pickup comes less than a week after the launch of Mrs. Maisel‘s eight-episode third season, and just days after the series scored multiple Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild nominations.
An episode count for Season 4 has not been determined; production is set to begin next spring.
“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel has been a worldwide phenomenon, and Season 3 has been no exception, with the series’ most watched opening weekend ever,” enthused Jennifer Salke, Head of Amazon Studios, in a statement. “We’re so happy that our Prime Video customers will get to see Midge’s story continue in Season 4. Amy and Dan have created such funny, charming, relatable characters, all with their inimitable wit and eye for detail.” [pmc_inline_gallery]
In their own statement, series creator Amy Sherman-Palladino and fellow EP Daniel Palladino said, “We were thrilled to hear that for the fourth time, we do not have to pack up and vacate the premises. We’d like to thank Amazon for all their faith and support, their partnership and enthusiasm, and for letting us hang with our favorite people, the cast and crew of Maisel, for a little while longer.”
Mrs. Maisel‘s third season ended with [SPOILER ALERT] Midge’s career being dealt a major setback when Shy Baldwin abruptly cut her as the opening act of his world tour.
In a recent interview with TVLine, Sherman-Palladino shared that she did not have a specific end date in mind for the show. “We know where we want [Midge]’s story to end,” she said. “We don’t know how many more seasons it will take to get there, but we know when the journey is over.”
Not surprising, though it would have been VERY depressing if the season 3 finale was the end.
why would it be this isnt netflix
lol true
Shade. Accurate shade.
I’m so glad this is coming back. I’m just bummed I have to wait a year.
Hopefully they are able to get back to the charm of the first two seasons. I’m not saying season three was bad, but I would give it a B compared to the As I would give the first two seasons.
my exact thoughts
The best part of season 3 for me was Susie’s story. She and Midge together are gold, she and Sophie together are gold, she and Jackie together are gold, etc. The rest of the supporting cast, while wonderful actors, don’t feel like they belong anymore. I hate that Midge and Joel seem to be endgame. Yes, they can always love each other, but grow and move on, for Pete’s sake. So glad there’ll be another season because ending in season 3 would have been a bummer.
This is quickly becoming one my favorite show. It’s just so fun and delightful.
*immediate Season 4 renewal*
See, Netflix? This is how ya do it.
I’m kind of surprised they haven’t just given this a multi season renewal.
My favorite season to date. What I would love to see, just for the thrill, would be one episode from the POV of Zelda. She is hilarious.
So happy! Absolutely love this show. I think season three just made me realize how much I like Midge with Joel, Lenny and Benjamin for different reasons. I hope she ends up with Benjamin, but I doubt that will happen.
I agree. I think Benjamin could totally deal with her career.
I agree. She just assumed, with no justification, that he would be like Joel. He was accomplished and comfortable with himself. Midge’s issue is too naive, simplistic about certain things. She has no one to blame but herself for blowing up her chance with Shy. I started cringing right from the start of her Apollo set.
Every scene with Lenny Bruce/Luke Kirby was perfection…sure hope that character reappears in season 4. My dream: to slow dance like Lenny & Midge…wearing a dress like Midge’s. I hope costuming & casting also wins awards.
i would a Lenny Bruce spinoff of any kind.
I think a Lenny spin off would be to sad it would wind up like ‘Ray’ or ‘Walk the Line’ WITHOUT the happy ending because Lenny died in ’68
It’s got to remain surreal to the Palladino’s that they would have a show that gets both critical and award respect as well a not needing to worry about getting cancellation because you’re popular with audiences.
“Put that on your plate”, Netflix!
Only 8 episodes so sad!
I have been reading articles about who Shy Baldwin is based on. There is no doubt that it is Johnny Mathis, now 84 years old.
I gave it a B because I am disappointed that this season was only 8 episodes, need more 😉
You call EIGHT episodes a season? ? ? I’ve seen longer mini-series’. Amazon should have dropped it and let it got to their competitor. These people need a foot up their arse if only to show them what REAL work is.
I cannot WAIT until season 4! My only complaint is that it is literally a YEAR between seasons, then they all come out at once, so of course I have to binge watch them, and then I am SO sad when I’m through them. Wish they would make this an ongoing sitcom.
It was awsome, but I gave a very good reason because of the abrupt ending, it felt like there should have been at least a couple more episodes many aspects left hanging… at least the 1st 2 seasons ended at a turning but solid point, not so well done in season 3.
I cannot see how Shy Baldwin could be so upset with Midge. Especially since she seems to be the only understanding friend he has. I think he is a little juvinial not talking to her himself. Knowing she is a comic he could have made some ground rules.
I think Shy needs to kiss some major Midge backside.
I totally agree!
I have to disagree. Unfortunately Midge went for the easy laugh because she was nervous after the interaction with Moms Mabley and her manager as well as the intimidating size of the audience. She did what Sophie did, the moment she got a laugh, she took her routine down the wrong path. With Sophie she went back to her comedy routine instead play script and with Midge they laughed at how beautiful Shy is so she started pulling from that.
She could have stuck with the antics of the band and keep to how good looking he is and talk about the dishes that his fans brought backstage for him. REALLY…”click his Judy Garland ruby red slippers together” even Susie knew after his manager reiterated the statement! She went TOO FAR even after Shy told her, on the boat, that no one can ever know. It was VERY HARD lesson for her to learn but learn it she did.
Can’t wait for Season 4 – love this show!!
You are so right. She broke a trust after promising to keep his secrets. I knew after the chiffon dresses comments.
This is a perfect assessment of what went wrong in that comedy routine…the thing that is funny about Midge is she seems more worldly than she actually is. Yes she has been married and divorced what looks like twice ;) before she is 30 and has 2 children, however, she has lived a really sheltered life literally from her father’s house to 1 floor down to her husband’s house. I can’t wait for season 4 either….Jacky will have passed, she might have to do way more road work to pay for the apartment she bought, Joel and May might get engaged or married. The next season has so many great possibilities
Omg it’s over and I cant wait for season 4
Please hurry
I waited and waited for season 3 .. I watched all 8 episodes in one day and didn’t leave the couch .. I can’t wait for season 4 ! Love love love ! I just hate to wait so long again for 4 .. Great Job ! Good work! No complaints at all except it was only 8 episodes 😢 I would have watched straight 20 !! 😁
Humor, ups & downs of life of all the characters and how they deal with it is marvelous…besides exquisite costumes & art direction, cinematography & direction & seemless editing….
But more than all… the show’s joyfull energy makes you forget everything else around! It’s like a dream vacation!
I love The Marvelous Mrs Maisel
Can’t wait for Season 4
I love all of the seasons equally and really want both Midge and Joel to make a success of their ventures.
I have an end game in mind – I wonder if it matches that of the script writers.
