This is an old news story from May 2019; Madam Secretary aired its series finale on Dec. 8, 2019.
Slap that “McCord 2020” campaign button on your lapel, because Madam Secretary will be back for a just-ordered Season 6, TVLine has learned.
As series co-creators Barbara Hall and Lori McCreary told TVLine after the Season 5 finale, upcoming episodes likely will chronicle Elizabeth’s experiences as a candidate in a political primary and presidential election.
“We’ve always been about pulling back the curtain on the State Department and showing the process of diplomacy, so this is going to be pulling back the curtain on a campaign and everything that that involves,” Hall said. Viewers will recall that, after some back-and-forth with her conscience — how to leave all the good and necessary work at State behind, Elizabeth wondered? — McCord eventually announced her run for the Oval Office in the final moments of the season-ender.

Madam Secretary, which has been on the bubble at the end of several of its recent seasons, wrapped Season 5 on April 21 with a 0.4 rating and 4.8 million total viewers, holding steady in the demo but bringing in its second-smallest audience ever. Its renewal has been noted on TVLine’s Renewal Scorecard.
On Thursday, CBS also re-upped SEAL Team, SWAT, Bull, Hawaii Five-0, MacGyver and the news programs 60 Minutes and 48 Hours. For those of you keeping score, the scripted series that remain in limbo at CBS include The Code, Fam, Happy Together, Life in Pieces, Man With a Plan, Murphy Brown and The Red Line.
How do you feel about Madam Secretary‘s renewal? Let us know in the comments!
Great news! I recently fell in love with the show, so I’m very happy to hear this!
Love the fact that Madame Secretary provides a perspective of what it may be like for a woman to be leading from the inside. Much appreciate this series. Very topical issues.
YES, YES, YES!!! Doing a happy dance for Madam Secretary, er, I mean Candidate McCord!! Glad for the other shows too.!
I adore the show, the actors, it’s witty and smart and a joy on Sunday night to watch. So glad to hear this news and congrats to the hard working cast and crew!
excellent show ! pleased to see it return
Me too.
EXCELLENT news! So can “Season 7” be a Madam President spinoff? Maybe on All Access, where they don’t have to worry too much about total audience, a la The Good Fight?
GREAT Idea
This is exactly what I am hoping too……or at least season 7 actually being Season 1 of Madam President. I’m UK based so not sure what All Access is, I have to wait for the DVD boxset.
I love this show, and how they don’t shy away from the big political issues (that are relevant around the globe). Really hope we’re right on this. 🤞🏻
I would love to see Madam President return on CBS in the Fall, 2020-2021 Season. I love Candidate McCord and her family. I also love the idea of seeing a woman President in action. She is very powerful and stands up for our rights as citizens of the U.S. Please reinstate the show. Thank you.
I love this show so much! I am so happy this was renewed. It’s one of my favorites. And I can only hope to have a relationship like her’s and Henry’s one day.
AWESOME ..SMART…AND FANTASTIC DECISION!!!!! I LOVE THIS SHOW!!!!!!
Thanks CBS, I enjoy this show, even with my minor complaint since day one that they never really incorporated the kids into the show very well.
What are you talking about??? Oldest daughter Stevie has been working in the White House.. The other 2 have had their moments but not as much.
After the satire of VEEP, it will be interesting to see how this one works. Obviously there have been numerous women POTUS on TV over the years ranging from 24 to SuperGirl ( with the former Wonder Woman actually being an alien)… But this will be the first one where we’ll see a candidate that we have gotten to know running and trying to split the difference in politics..
Not to mention Stevie’s little romance with Dmitri. I wish somehow they could bring him back and make that work, I love their chemistry.
Interesting perspective. Personally, I think the home life aspect is the worst part of the show, especially when they started trying to connect her and Henry professionally, as well. It just feels really forced. I don’t mind a family dinner scene or a kiss goodnight at home, but I prefer the meat of the episodes to be about her solving problems at work. Henry’s storylines always felt tangential at best, even when they would take up the better part of a season. I think they did a good job in Season 5 getting their focus back, though.
I love the show and hope it continues. I do see some true of reality. Great job with the junk that is on the screen today it is great to be able to watch something that appeals to both my husband and I.
Glad they get a season 6. I am hoping they treat it as a final season, because win or lose, McCord won’t be “madam secretary” by the end. In a way, I wish they hadn’t gone this direction, West Wing did it already.
Great news about Madam Secretary, better than most on TV these days.
I keep reading that The Red Line hasn’t been renewed … I thought it was a limited series? So renewal is not really to be anticipated?
Left wing show. Good script. Good acting. But usually on the wrong side of every issue. Commie show
You don’t have to watch it. But since you do, mind explaining how a show that is literally about promoting democracy and protecting American interests around the world through diplomacy promotes communism? Genuinely curious.
I watched about half of the first season. I didn’t see any promoting democracy and protecting American interests at all. I saw an informercial for the DNC.
LOL ok
Thanks for chiming in from the trailer park, Chucky.
Typical “better than the rest of us” demokrat Bobby. Go low from the git go.
We know your trolling 2 accounts. Reported
Commie? Your showing your age and disassociation from modern politics. Don’t like it? Don’t watch, it’s a free country…. So far… King Don the Con jokes about changing that.
It was kinda obvious some sort of pickup was going to be ordered, either a renewal or a wrap up movie.
Thrilled. This show is beautifully done and has stayed true to the characters for the full run of the show. Really, really happy for cast and crew.
CBS is almost as loyal as CW with its renewals. I guess it not all that surprising as its part-owner in CW.
I am glad that Madam Secretary is coming back. It is one of my favorite shows that I watch every sunday. Thank you to the writers and producers,
YAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYY!!!
I wouldn’t have minded if they cancelled it and just launched a new show with same cast called Madam President.
It would probably help with the ratings.
COULD NOT BE HAPPIER!!! I have been watching and waiting for this (hopefully positive outcome) for weeks and weeks!!!!
this is one of the best shows on tv. We always look forward to it.
Super excited about this. I have been watching since season 1 and I love the characters, story lines, sets, costumes, everything.
My only beef is how other shows will push the start and end time of this one. I’ve compensated by setting my DVR to record 2 hours after the supposed “end time” and it works, but it does eat up a lot of DVR space (for example, when I get 2 or 3 episodes behind because well, life happens). I also wonder if this has been a factor in viewership and if so, that is not fair to do to any TV show.
As a side note, leaving a show with too long of a season start (ahem, Life in Pieces) is also unfair. You can’t expect people to stay engaged when you wait almost another year before starting a new season. And cable TV doesn’t count….people choose to pay extra for those channels because of the shows that are on them. You can’t say the same for network. I think this is also why Timeless didn’t make it after the comeback…..too long between seasons.
But I digress. I’m glad that Madam Secretary was renewed!
I’m happy to hear that Madam Secretary will get a 6th season.
My husband and I look forward to watching Madam Secretary every week. Love the the chemistry all the actors have with each other and the story lines are relevant.
So happy to see this show has been renewed for another year.
Thank you.
So relieved to hear that Madame Secretary got the ‘go’ for next season. Great casting.
I am thrilled Madame Secretary was renewed, especially since I found out the two co-stars are dating each other!
Awesome news. This is a truly excellent show.
