Young Sheldon EP Teases Georgie And Mandy-Heavy Season 6, The Separation Of Church And Mary And More

Young Sheldon's border crisis remains unresolved when the Big Bang Theory offshoot returns for Season 6 (CBS, Thursday at 8/7c).

"The premiere picks up right after that phone call home to George and Mary," revealing that Georgie and Meemaw are in custody at the U.S.-Mexico border, executive producer Steve Holland tells TVLine. "The first episode is about the fallout of that [arrest]."

Meanwhile, while holed up in a jail cell, "the reality of impending fatherhood and how his life is turning out starts to hit Georgie hard."

Back in Medford, Mandy (played by new series regular Emily Osment) comes looking for Connie and runs into Sheldon and Missy, who have very different responses to meeting the mother of their future niece or nephew for the first time.

"Sheldon is very clinical about it, while Missy is actually really protective of her [older] brother," Holland reveals. "Mandy has been keeping Georgie at arm's length, so it doesn't go quite so well."

Keep scrolling as Holland previews what Young Sheldon has planned for each character this fall, then hit the comments with your hopes for Season 6.

SHELDON AND MISSY

The fraternal twins are on the precipice of adulthood, "pushing back at boundaries and trying to explore the world," Holland tells TVLine. "Sheldon is going to be spending more time at school, staying over some nights in his dorm room." Meanwhile, "Missy is going to get a part-time job this season," the EP teases. "It's a fun reveal."

GEORGIE

Sheldon's older brother is determined to prove he'll make a good dad and potential life partner for Mandy. "A lot of this season is Georgie and Mandy's story," Holland previews. "Georgie would obviously like to be with Mandy. But regardless of that, he wants to be a part of this baby's life and figure out how to be a provider." After his trip to the U.S.-Mexico border doesn't go according to plan, "he and Meemaw are going to expand the [laundromat casino] business together."

MANDY

Mandy remains reluctant to commit herself to George and Mary's much younger son. "She doesn't want to just marry this teenage kid who got her pregnant," Holland says. "She's a strong, independent woman that wants to make it on her own." But over time, "she starts to realize that she does need some help. It doesn't necessarily mean that they're going to get married. All of the Coopers step up. They're there for her."

MARY

Now that the congregation has disowned the Coopers, Season 6 will explore the separation of church and Mary. "This break from the church has made her question some of her priorities," Holland previews. "She's still religious, but she's a little bit adrift. The church has been such a huge part of her life, her community. Now, Mary is trying to find her place in the world without it. Her kids are older, they don't need her as much, and this [other] big piece of her identity has gone away."

Despite her break from the church, Mary remains in touch with the sometimes-star of her sacrilegious fantasies, Pastor Rob. "She does encounter him a few times this season," Holland confirms.

GEORGE

George is out of a job, he's pretty sure his wife has feelings for Rob, and now she's working alongside his almost-mistress, Brenda Sparks. Suffice it to say, things aren't going well for Sheldon's 'pa.

"All that gets put on the back burner [in the premiere] as he deals with getting his son out of jail," Holland tells us. "But following that up, George, like Mary, is at a crossroads. He has lost a piece of his identity. He is trying not only to find a job for employment, but figuring out what his role [in the world] is now, now that's he's no longer a high school football coach."

CONNIE

Connie's ex Dale is determined to get back together — but is Sheldon's Meemaw interested? "He's still around, and he regrets the breakup," Holland says. "He didn't think she would call his bluff [when he suggested they end their relationship], so it's a little bit of Dale trying to win Meemaw back."

Young Sheldon Season 6 premieres Thursday, Sept. 29 at 8/7c on CBS.
