During her time as Secretary of State, Madam Secretary‘s Elizabeth McCord fearlessly has brokered peace, de-escalated wars and advanced human rights causes around the world. But on a sticky night in late August, a bit of horsehide and some red stitching had the former diplomat on edge.
The nerves stemmed from the fact that the (fictional) Elizabeth, played by the (real) Téa Leoni, was set to throw the first pitch at the (real) Indians vs. Mets game at New York’s Citi Field… as American presidents have been known to do.
Yep, you read that right: When CBS‘ political drama returns for its sixth and final season this fall, and thanks to a time jump, Leoni’s character will have gone from a member of President Dalton’s cabinet to leader of the free world.
So when it came time to take the field, both Leoni and her alter ego were sweating — and not just from the humidity. “I would rather have a root canal, naked, in Grand Central,” the actress tells TVLine the next day. “I think, in my professional life, it may have been the second most terrifying day.”
Getting the shot required four tries; not all of them were Hall of Fame-worthy. Eventually, though, “I threw this great, like, not a strike, but damn near, from the mound,” Leoni proudly reports. “It was very important to me that as the first female president, it was gonna get to the plate.”
President McCord’s baseball outing will appear in Episode 2 of the upcoming season, which the show’s producers say will look quite different from those that preceded it. There’ll be new sets (goodbye, Georgetown brownstone), new challenges (the switch from diplomacy to leadership can be a tough one) and a newly reduced cast (five longtime cast members are no longer series regulars — more on that in a moment).
Put all the changes together, and “It was like launching a new series,” executive producer Barbara Hall tells TVLine exclusively.
A SWITCH-UP AND A SCANDAL | The notion of Elizabeth McCord moving into the Oval Office started as an inside joke early in the CBS drama’s run: With the production often having to wait a while to find out whether it would be back in the fall, Leoni says, such a grandiose long-term plan seemed premature at best. But with each season’s renewal, the joke got a little less funny. And by the time Season 5 drew to a close, Elizabeth had made it official by announcing her candidacy for President of the United States.
When the finale aired, Hall and fellow executive producer Lori McCreary thought that Season 6 would portray Elizabeth’s path to the presidency via primary, the campaign trail and the eventual election. But then two things happened. First, CBS announced that Season 6 would be the show’s last. And second, Madam Secretary‘s Powers That Be had a revelation: The show always has portrayed politics through an ideal, West Wing-ish lens, with Elizabeth leading the charge on what members of the series’ creative team refer to as “aspirational” politics. Given that Season 6 would bow during the lead-up to the actual 2020 president election, would American audiences aspire to watching fictional mudslinging contest at the same time the real one was underway?
“We found a way to have the best of both worlds, where we decided to jump ahead and make her president,” Hall says. McCreary teases that a simmering scandal will cause Elizabeth & Co. to think back over their recent past, “And we get the fun of picking and choosing the moments that we go back to, so that we don’t have to take even four or five episodes to do a whole campaign.”
Leoni recalls that the choice to continue that mode of storytelling got some serious buy-in at the network. “[Chief Creative Officer] David Nevins at CBS completely agreed,” she says. “In his mind, he said, ‘When this comes back, she’s president.'”
MAJOR CASTING CHANGES | Given the shift to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. — and the 10-episode order, which is less than half the length of a normal Madam Secretary season — some changes needed to occur. The McCords’ luxurious Georgetown home was dismantled, and the White House sets were expanded. Kevin Rahm, who plays Elizabeth’s canny adviser Mike B., was promoted to series regular, which reflects Mike’s increased influence in the season; likewise, Erich Bergen’s Blake has been given an important new position in the McCord administration.
But there are several Madam Secretary standbys who will no longer have much of a presence in Elizabeth’s inner circle. In addition to Sara Ramirez’s previously reported change in status at the show, Sebastian Arcelus (who plays Jay), Geoffrey Arend (Matt), Kathrine Herzer (Alison), Evan Roe (Jason) and Keith Carradine (President Dalton) will no longer be series regulars when Season 6 premieres.

“The decision I had to make was, what characters need to be most prominent in [Elizabeth’s] new division and her world?” Hall says. “It’s such a different world that some of the other [characters’] jobs were not translated into what we wanted for her, and the kids aren’t really at home anymore.”
Both EPs stress that we’ll see many, if not all, of the sidelined characters at some point during the final season; Carradine, for example, already has shot at least one episode, and other appearances will depend largely on the actors’ schedules. “We do want everyone to be present in the show and are inviting them to be, so we’ll see,” Hall says, adding that the writers’ room hasn’t yet broken story beyond Episode 5.
MEET FGOTUS | The show’s final premiere (Sunday, Oct. 6 at 10/9c) picks up with President McCord nearly two years after the events of the Season 5 finale. She’s just shy of her first hundred days in office, and we’ll soon watch her face pressing issues like the use of unmanned military drones, the mercurial attitudes of the American public and, y’know, the simple fact of being the nation’s first female commander-in-chief.
“We’re peeling back the difference when a female is in power versus when a man is in power,” McCreary notes. (Anyone else itching for the moment Elizabeth and fictional Philippine President Datu Andrada are in the same room again?) “Sometimes those things go unnoticed by all of us, and we’re really going to take a moment to point it out to the audience.”
Where’s Tim Daly’s Henry during all of this, you might wonder? The newly minted First Gentleman (by the way, that’s the actual title — “I thought it was First Man, which is creepy,” Leoni says, laughing) will have a full roster of duties… but don’t expect “picking new window treatments for the China Room” to be high on FGOTUS’ list. “Every First Gentleman or First Lady has their cause,” McCreary previews, adding that Henry’s efforts will be aligned with the first major piece of legislation that Elizabeth will get passed. “It fits seamlessly with Henry’s character from the last five seasons,” she adds. “He finds such depth of resonance with the kind of things that this office can allow that he’s going to make the most of it.”
Along those lines, both Hall and McCreary note that it’s a privilege to tell the story of the first woman to serve as United States president, and they’re not going to squander a moment of the show’s final run.
Before the finale goes to black, McCreary teases, expect to experience “our top three fantasies of what will happen when a female becomes president.”
For me, the family scenes (especially the younger boy and girl) never worked well anyway, so I don’t mind seeing them deemphasized in the show. Otherwise, we’ll see. I’ll watch the final 10 episodes in any case.
It is interesting that, while the younger two children will be appearing on a more limited basis, it sounds like Stevie will still be a regular. Given her previous White House experience, I wonder if she’ll be taking on an official role in her mother’s administration.
I completely disagree. I thought the family scenes were an integral part of the show.
Agreed!
The family scenes were some of the best parts of the show.
I really thought the final season would focus on her campaign and tying up loose ends with the final ep announcing the outcome of the November election.
I really thought a new Madame President show would join The Good Fight at CBS All Access.
I don’t think watching an election with ours looming would have been a good idea. Any other time perhaps, but not now.
Pat…..that is a great idea!!!!!
that was my thought … Hopes of “Madam President” on CBS All Access. But, I remember the West Wing – the last year with the campaign vs. everything that went on previous – was just lackluster compared with the rest of the series. I’m sad that Madam Secretary is only 10 episodes, but at least CBS gave them that. I will miss this show – and the family. I enjoyed seeing them all together.
I use yo enjoy the show but the past two years they have become a left leaning program even having Hillary appear. I stopped watching. Glad it is going bye bye.
It’s exactly the same show. And the episode that Hillary was in also had Madeline Albright AND Colin Powell (who is republican). It was always a left leaning show (even though they said “independent”), but i have always enjoyed it. And I lean right. So I don’t understand the hate all of a sudden.
I hate that we’re losing Jay, I thought that character brought a lot to the table. Hate Mike B (no reflection on the actor) so not pleased we’re getting more of him. However, looking forward to seeing what they do with storylines for 10 episodes, it’ll be quality over quantity.
Agree about the character Jay as he was such a major part of the Secretary’s success. The actor did a great job. At least Jay didn’t get pushed in front of a train like another gov’t character the actor portrayed on House of Cards.
His character in House of Cards eas pushed in front of a train? I know Kate Mara’s character meeting that fate but I do not recall that for Sebastian’s character. You sure?
He is saying At least he did not get pushed in front of a train like a character on house of cards… you’re incorrectly reading what was said…
I would have thought that Jay, as MS’s Chief of Staff would have moved in to that position in the White House. But, maybe that will be Blake?
I’m wondering that, too! I’m sad that Jay won’t be a series regular, as well as Matt. It makes sense for the younger two kids to not be on as much if they are away at college or something. I’m glad she’ll already be president. I love this show, but I honestly wasn’t looking forward to watching the final season be episodes about campaigning.
Hope one of the other networks picks it up.
If they are smart, they will.
Only 10 episodes……..horrible
Be glad it lasted this long!
I am super excited for S6 and I am happy for Kevin Rahm being added as ‘series regular’ I adore Mike B.
Me too. Mike B. is funny. And Gordon!! Helloooo!! Lol
RIP Gordon.
It makes sense to lose the two younger kids. as one should be graduating or close to graduating from college and the other one will be in college or finding he own path. Stevie is an interesting question. What role will she have? Still with Russell in the Chief of Staff’s office? is hoped they reached deep and got some interesting actors for the cabinet posts, Can’t wait to see what happens, though I’d like more episodes. I think having to tell the story in 10 can makes things tighter and more poignant.
Do you think Russell will be Elizabeth’s Chief of Staff? Not sure who else it would be. None of the other regulars seem qualified for CoS. Daisy will be Press Secretary, obviously; and Jay will have stayed at State. Sort of surprised Matt didn’t make the jump to White House communications director or something.
Or is Russell maybe her VP?
Love that idea
Leo already basically did that on West Wing, zzzzzzzzzZZZZZ
OK, maybe Russell is the new Sec State…poetic justice after all the grief he gave her.
Not sure where Russell will land, but if Kevin Rahm is being promoted to SR, my money is he gets the chief of staff gig.
True. That makes a lot of sense, now that you mention it.
I don’t know why, but it seems like Mike B would be the chief of staff. Jay at State, Daisy as press secretary. Government nepotism laws pretty much should keep Stevie out of the West Wing (the situation we currently have in real life is a serious aberration…) but if she found a way to work in the East Wing with her dad that would be less terrible, provided she wasn’t paid. But I’d like to think she’d still be working for Russell, wherever he ends up.
I am so happy we won’t get stuck watching the campaign, I was not looking forward to that. I am sad to be losing all those characters though. Everyone of them brought a wonderful perspective to the show.
I’m so excited about this. It seems like they’re being really thoughtful and deliberate about how to pace the season and wrap up the serious with 10 episodes. I’m disappointed that this apparently isn’t heading toward a Madam President sequel series/continuation, but I’m thrilled that they at least have the opportunity to end the show right and on their own terms. It seems like they know what works in this world, and what fans respond to, and are putting the focus there for these final episodes. Really really looking forward to watching it!
I’m very happy that we don’t have to go through a season of election activities. I am most interested to see who is in the cabinet and who is her COS? With Tea Leoni I would still watch a sequel called Madam President. I hate to see the series end.
10 eps – you only have so much room to move plot. Better bring the departed cast in to tie-off their stories in a one-off ep, than hunt for things for them to do.
JUMPED THE SHARK! That is what a formerly outstanding show has done in a truncated final season. I’m completely tapped out.
It didn’t make sense for Elizabeth to find roles for her chief of staff (Jay) and speech writer (Matt) in her new administration? Ooookkkkk…..
I don’t think that they’re not series regulars anymore means that they don’t have a job in the administration. Jay/Arcelus wasn’t a series regular during S1 and didn’t appear in every episode, neither did Kat these past couple of seasons. I think it’s their way of story-telling. While West Wing was about the Senior staff, Madam Secretary has been more about the crisis du jour and when she was in the WH, it was usually with other cabinet members or cabinet level officials. I’m assuming they’ll continue that. But I expect Matt to still be her speech writer. Jay, I have no idea. Some Senior level advisor. I’ve seen photos of Russell with his usual leather folder, so I’m assuming he stays chief of staff. Mike B could be WH counsel. (if there’s a scandal brewing it would make sense, same reason why keeping Daisy as regular makes sense to me. I just hope the scandal is not dirty politics because I really see enough of that on the news).
As far as Henry is concerned, I seriously hope that his cause is not going to overshadow Bess as the first female President.Ten episodes is little enough, so I don’t care about some Henry mission. I want him in a supportive role, like he was in S1. Hope springs eternal, right?
I’m surprised to see Stevie is returning as a series regular. Hopefully, she won’t hold a position anywhere in the WH or administration. Maybe she made the switch to the Hill?
I could swear I remember an episode where Matt was under the impression he was being replaced and Elizabeth promised him that not only was he not being replaced but if she made the jump he’d go too. …
There were a couple of episodes when Matt feared for his job, one in S1 and one last season, although, it was Jay who Bess had the WH conversation with in S1, third episode. He wanted to hand over his resignation and mentioned that he had wanted to go the WH with the late Secretary Marsh and she told him that if an opportunity came up that would lead him to the WH and he’d wanted to leave then, she’d understand ( I love this show to pieces, so I rewatch it a lot :-))
I think it would be very odd if any of Bess’ staff would pass on an opportunity to go the WH. But considering that Jay has his daughter and wants to be in her life, it makes sense that he doesn’t have such a big role in the administration.
Netflix please pick up Madame Secretary! Its a great show with Tea !
Wonderful, I second that!!!
I will miss this show and look forward to the final season being as great as those that came before it. But it’s not the first time this has been dramatized. In addition to a woman being President in a season of “24,” there was also a great show on ABC called “Commander in Chief.”
It aired in 2005 and starred Geena Davis as the first female POTUS and was a great show. Despite that, it didn’t last long. It only lasted one season.
No, but they can still roll with the “first female POTUS” angle in their own universe here, since it’s not like any combination of those two shows plus this one share a universe or anything.
Commander in Chief lasted for seasons. I have them on DVD.
The one with Geena Davis? Nope, only one. 2005-2006, 19 episodes
Yea you are right the one with Genna Davis only lasted one season. I was so disappointed But I’m really kisses iff that Madam Secretary’s season six is only 10 episodes. Tia and Tim have such chemistry it’s wonderful. I want to start a letter email phone call campaign to send MS to CBS all access. Because I would pay for that show.
I guess Russell must join Elizabeth’s administration, if he’s still a series regular. And I’m curious how they further things between Blake and Stevie. It would be interesting if they’re fully in a relationship when the show returns.
The creators are wrong about portraying the first female POTUS, Geena Davis played the one in her own series many years ago, maybe not the first elected but definitely POTUS.
Really bummed. Jason should have stayed on the show and been in the White House one year before heading off to college. Jason was a key part of the show and will be greatly missed Allison somewhat but not as much as Jason the family scenes were important to the show. Jay was also a popular character but I understand he probably has many other offers.
The game that she filmed at was actually a Mets/Indians game. I was watching it on tv and freaked out with joy when I saw her.
I think it’s awful this series has been cancelled CBS seems to be cancelling a lot of good shows and creating bad ones
I agree it’s a popular and well liked show, why get rid.of something that’s working and creating new shows that your hoping will be better makes no sense
I couldn’t agree more. I don’t mind so much that it’s cancelled. I wouldn’t have minded a 7th season either but at the very least, they could have given it a full season order. Ten episodes is just not enough for the amount of story there is to tell. I would have liked 4-5 episodes of campaigning and I also would have loved to see the transition period. I would have loved to see how Bess and Conrad interact because I love their relationship. Also, how the family deals with the transition would have been interesting.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a show that has had such quality writing for so long but as far as I know, the writing/production team hasn’t changed. Plus, this show is different and not a carbon-copy of another carbon-copy police procedural or revival of whatever. I wish CBS would change their mind!
Give me one good reason why this show is canceled after this short season 6!!
Why is it canceled after this season?
Henry having a roster full of duties…well, I’d imagine some of those might still roll from the role(s) he’s had within the government up until now. Actually – how would a real-life POTUS spouse who happens to have already had government experience prior to their spouse’s presidency, how would the two things affect each other? Henry’s intelligence role and now becoming First Gentleman, I mean.
Incidentally – the clarification that First Gentleman IS the actual title only strikes me as odd because of the previous fictional female Presidents we’ve seen, I.E. getting that right should be a no-brainer. (“24” was the instance that came to my mind; it’s the only one of those that I watched.)
Why only 10? No……….CBS……..please let them create the usual amount or let them come back for 4 more seasons? This is one of the best shows!!!!!
Am reading the comments, and nobody is the least bit bothered that the show is still titled Madam Secretary, even tho the lead actress is now the President? I was looking forward to the last 10 episodes be the fight for the presidency and then Madam President introduced as a new show, like The Closer became Major Crimes on TNT.
I was thinking the same thing. Why keep it at MS and not change it to Madam President. Moving it to another channel works for me. How does one go about beginning a campaign to keep this show on or at least picked up by another station? it was the one show that made me feel like there could be hope for this country after what we have put up with in the current administration. Just makes sense to keep a good thing going. CBS much have gotten heat from someone to shut it down. Typical
We have a viewing and letter/tweeting campaign as well as a petition (https://www.change.org/p/give-madam-secretary-fans-madam-president). We would really love your help in campaigning and feel free to join discussions on Reddit at r/Madam Secretary!

One of two of my favorite shows on network TV!
I’m very surprised to hear they are making this a new show and letting Keith Carradine go! I became a huge fan of his from the show Dexter when he played Lundy. That’s the reason I even started to watch Madame Secretary because I knew //keith would be on it. I was surprised he had so little to do on the show in the beginning seeing as how hw was the President. But one of my favorite things about the show was the relationship between Conrad Dalton and Bess. Well maybe you will at least have an ep. showing Conrad loosing and Bess winning. Otherwise I will be looking to see what Keith Carradine gets next. Something that shows his talent more often!
The show is called Madame Secretary. I assumed it would focus on SOS and her staff otherwise it would have played like a West Wing reboot. I always assumed she would be POTUS. We would be lucky to have our first female President be as classy and honest as Elizabeth McCord. I am not a Democrat but love the show.
