Controversial, we know, but where’s the fun in having them get together so early into the show’s inevitably long run? Shaun is sure to be overwhelmed with Glassman’s cancer treatment (and whatever repercussions he faces as a result of his surgical screw-up in the Season 1 finale), and doesn’t need the added pressure of his first romantic relationship right now. What he needs is a friend, and that’s exactly why we’re excited to have Lea back… in a platonic capacity.
GLASSMAN’S CANCER SCARE MUST BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY
What was initially diagnosed as terminal brain cancer was quickly downgraded to a low-grade glioma. While we don’t expect Shaun’s surrogate father to suddenly kick the bucket, we’d hate for the show to treat his diagnosis as an afterthought. We’re excited to see what kind of showcase his road to recovery gives the always excellent Richard Schiff. A prolonged treatment plan might also mean more screen time for new recurring guest star Lisa Edelstein.
A PROPER SENDOFF FOR JARED
While cast turnover is to be expected on a medical drama, we grew to like Chuku Modu’s Dr. Kalu an awful lot by season’s end. Now that we know he’s returning for the Season 2 premiere, we’re hoping his exit is handled well, and leaves the door open for him to scrub back in for the occasional visit.
KENNY’S VANISHING ACT
Nothing against Chris D’Elia, but Kenny — aka Garbage Person Neighbor — has got. to. go. If he does return, we hope it’s temporary. Nothing would give us more pleasure than seeing Lea kick his behind to the curb for taking advantage of Shaun during her absence.
THE RETURN OF CLAIRE’S MOTHER
The show barely scratched the surface when it finally introduced Dr. Browne’s estranged mom (played by Supergirl‘s Sharon Leal). In fact, when she did appear, the character wasn’t even given a name. Surely there’s more to be mined here, especially since the last we saw of her Mom, she was once again failing her daughter and asking for a loan.
“CUTTHROAT BITCH” ORIGINS
If Fiona Gubelmann’s Amber from House-esque character is sticking around for the long haul (versus, say, being killed off in a fatal bus accident come November Sweeps), then we need to know why Morgan behaves the way that she does. Did she not get enough love as child? Did a fellow student betray her in med school, making it harder for her to trust her fellow MDs? We’re not saying the character has to change — in fact, we quite enjoy the energy she brings to Melendez’s team — but we need to know why she’s so unlikeable.
A NEW ROMANCE FOR MELENDEZ… AND LIM
Claire and Melendez ‘shippers be damned. We much prefer the chemistry between Nicholas Gonzalez and recently promoted series regular Christina Chang. Sparks were flying at St. Bonaventure’s annual fundraiser, and we think they’re worth exploring.
CLAIRE’S #METOO MOMENT
Remember when Claire tracked down former hospital staffer Kristen and they vowed to fight the system together and take down sexual harasser Dr. Coyle? And then… [crickets]? Here’s hoping this timely storyline finally gets the attention it deserves in Season 2.
