2016 in Review: The 20 Funniest TV Moments of the Year

After the year we’ve had (oof), we could all use a good laugh, right?

We’ve already covered the year’s best comedies in TVLine’s Year in Review, but this list is our way of highlighting the most hilarious TV scenes and moments — the ones that made us reach for the pause button because we were laughing too hard to keep up. (And that still make us laugh when we watch them again. And again.)

We’ve got some awkward bed-sharing on The Big Bang Theory, a no-holds-barred rap battle on Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, a bad case of the mumps on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, a certain Halloween aficionado on SNL and a dozen more hysterical moments that make us giggle just thinking about them. And we’ve included video clips, whenever possible, so you can giggle along with us.

Click on the gallery to the right — or click here for direct access — to check out our picks, then come back and hit the comments to tell us which TV moments cracked you up the most this year. Because laughter — and lots of eggnog — are indeed the best medicine.

Coming up soon in TVLine’s Year in Review: Best Performances, the Most OMG Plot Twists, Quotes of the Year and lots more!

Comments are monitored, so don’t go off topic, don’t frakkin’ curse and don’t bore us with how much your coworker’s sister-in-law makes per hour. Talk smart about TV!

  1. Penny Can says:

Amy using her phone to flash at Sheldon gets my vote. Not usually an Amy fan but that was hilarious.

  2. TvPeong says:

I’ve watched that episode of black-ish three times and laughed at that scene every time

  3. Gena says:

Great pick for SNL, but I could just as easily have gone with the “Farewell Mr. Bunting” short from the s.41 finale (which made your “things we wish we could unsee” list). :D

Not listed, but for some reason I don’t recall having a bigger giggle-fit this year than during the recent Hamilton episode of ‘Drunk History,’ when Lin-Manuel Miranda took a call from Questlove in the middle of his narration and it got incorporated into a reenactment scene. :)

  4. 'A' Got a Secret says:

No Love for Ash Vs Evil Dead here on TVLine?
No mention of it on any list. It should have been included in Best Comedies, TV character who had horrible year (Ash, Pablo, Ruby), scenes we desperately wish we could unsee (Ash’s fight with the Colon monster like common, Ash getting breastfed by a deadite in the season finale) & funniest tv moments (Ash repeatedly calling Baal as Bill, Any Ruby-Ash-Kelly-Pablo scenes)

  5. Dante says:

It just couldn’t be a list on TV Line without Gilmore Girls getting a mention.

  6. ScottJ says:

Mumps in adult males are no laughing matter. After he caught them from 12 year old me my father was in bed for a week, couldn’t move, and almost had to be hospitalised. Both of us also ended up sterile. And some years later when my 20 year old girlfriend caught mumps the guys in her primarily male university year banned her from lectures until the swelling had gone down.

  7. Simon Jester says:

“Jimmy was forced to describe the sexual act known as ‘squat cobbler’ to a pair of investigators. They could have just looked it up on Urban Dictionary, but this was waaaay more hysterical.”

No, they couldn’t have “just looked it up on Urban Dictionary,” because the phrase ORIGINATED IN THIS EPISODE and was only added to UD afterward.

  8. evababy says:

I wasn’t feeling this list til I got to the Invisible Car moment in Atlanta. And even thinking about it made me crack up laughing. That is how funny that moment is. You don’t have to “see it” (see what I did there?) again for it to make you laugh, just remembering it is enough.

For Brooklyn 99, I cracked up at Terry’s reaction to Rosa’s apartment during the two part finale. Actually everyone’s reaction to Rosa’s lovely apartment and the fact that now that they’ve all seen it she has to nuke it and surface another identity.

  9. rach says:

The song from Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is actually the song that made me stop watching the show, which I had thoroughly enjoyed until then. I don’t laugh at ethnic slurs that reduce Jewish women to materialistic, superficial caricatures. (I’m not saying it’s the worst ethnic slur out there, but there is no question, it is an ethnic slur and I’m actually kind of appalled at how positive the reaction to it was).

  10. T.W.S.S. says:

I don’t watch Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, but I have seen that JAP battle rap like 15 times.

  11. licious says:

all i can say is hahahahaha ooow & hahaha…hilarious
