Crazy Ex-Girlfriend's Gabrielle Ruiz Promoted to Series Regular

Rebecca Bunch may have won the battle for Josh in Crazy Ex-Girlfriend‘s first season finale, but the war isn’t necessarily over.

Gabrielle Ruiz (aka Josh’s new ex-girlfriend Valencia) has been promoted to series regular ahead of the CW comedy’s second season, TVLine has learned exclusively.

“In the middle of shooting our first season, Rachel [Bloom] once told me on set that she was a little sad Rebecca’s and Valencia’s friendship was so short-lived,” Ruiz says. “I could not agree more. I hope Rebecca and Valencia get another chance to make things work between them. I mean, they’re both now ex-girlfriends! Crazy or not, at least they now have something in common.”

In addition to making Rebecca’s life a living in hell in the show’s first season — not that Bex didn’t do plenty of hell raising herself — Valencia also kept our toes tapping with musical numbers like “I’m So Good At Yoga” and “Women Gotta Stick Together.”

Ruiz can also be seen in the upcoming season of Netflix’s Orange Is the New Black, dropping June 16. Her previous TV credits include roles on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and One Life to Live.

Are you hoping for more Rebecca-on-Valencia action in Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Season 2, or — like Ruiz — would you rather see them find common ground? Drop a comment with your thoughts on Ruiz’s promotion below.

Comments are monitored, so don’t go off topic, don’t frakkin’ curse and don’t bore us with how much your coworker’s sister-in-law makes per hour. Talk smart about TV!

She definitely earned it. Valencia was a very well-layered character for basically the lead’s antagonist, and “Women Gotta Stick Together” gets stuck in my head frequently. I hope she and Rebecca are able to have more scenes together, but every time I’m just waiting for it all to go. so. wrong.
