Outlander Roger Richard Rankin

Outlander Casts Burnt Actor as Roger

Outlander has found its Roger in Scottish actor Richard Rankin.

Rankin will play the grown-up version of Rev. Wakefield’s adopted son, whom we met in Season 1.

Described as “intelligent, kindhearted and charming,” Roger was raised by the pastor after his parents died in World War II. When we meet him, he is a professor at Oxford who is very interested in history.

In addition to the Bradley Cooper film Burnt, Rankin’s credits include XIIIFrom Darkness and The Syndicate. He also appeared in two episodes of American Odyssey.

Rankin tweeted his excitement after the announcement was made:

Spoiler alert: If you haven’t read the Diana Gabaldon novels on which the Starz series is based, and you don’t want to be spoiled about what’s ahead, avert your eyes now.

Season 2 likely will follow the format of Gabaldon’s Dragonfly in Amber, which opens in 1968 with a decades-long time jump that re-introduces Roger as a scholar in his late 20s. The older Roger then becomes acquainted with Claire… and her fetching, 20-something daughter, Brianna. Roger becomes a major player in the books moving forward.

Jesus H. Roosevelt Christ, thank you!!!

  2. Suz says:

This pleases me! I really liked him in the Crimson Field.

    • Amy says:

I loved him in that, too!

      • KT says:

Me, too! I couldn’t picture who they would cast for Roger, but I think he will work out well in the role. I’m glad it’s finally cast! No idea who Brianna should be played by. I think an unknown could be OK. A lot of the suggestions to cast actresses who are known just didn’t seem to fit the character at all.

  3. Shaun says:

Eh,I pictured him more of a burly scholar, this guy a bit feeble looking.

  4. Barbara Sindlinger says:

I hope he puts green contacts in since they really talk about his green eyes in the books

    • Mel says:

They talk about his eyes being the same as his great, great, great… grandmother. So no contacts needed as the colours match.

    • censability says:

Well they talk about Claire’s eyes being brown with a heavy dose of yellow and Caitriona’s eyes are blue so…

  5. Amy says:

    So,so,so,so,so happy about this casting!!!!!!

  6. Ian says:

*does quick image search* I approve! Now, just give me an exciting Brianna.

  7. barb s says:

Very good actor with a fine singing voice. A great addition. Now cast Joanna Vanderham as Brianna and the future of Outlander is assured

  8. Winter says:

Very exciting I’m not familiar with him but I’m sure he’ll be great.

  9. Miss O'Ginny says:

Capt Thomas:: “You drive me mad but I’d never hurt you”
Brianna: Yeah, good to know, now sing me a song…in your kilt and tambourine….

  10. Bart says:

Omg he is hot as F***!!!

Okay, totes had had to do an image search because I don’t recognize him. LOVE the photos of him beardless; exaaaaactly what I pictured Roger to look like! And yes, I know I know, Roger has a beard when they’re in the 1770s but he also has the long hair. I’m super super stoked for this character –he’s one of my favorites!

  12. kd8604 says:

Also, I hope this means that casting for Brianna will be released soon! I figured she’d be the last to be announced!

I just need “droughtlander” to be over. This waiting a year between seasons is torture.
