Ratings: Amazing Race Slows in Friday Debut, CBS Dramas Slip, Utopia Rises

Amazing Race Season 25 Ratings

CBS’ The Amazing Race expectedly slowed down in its new Friday time slot, launching Season 25 with 5.5 million total viewers and a 1.1 demo rating — down 36 and 45 percent from its previous, Sunday premiere.

TAR was also down from what Undercover Boss did in the time slot a year ago (8.2 mil/1.6).

CBS’ dramas in turn took a hit. Hawaii Five-0 returned to 9.0 mil/1.2 (down 4 and 25 percent from its previous premiere and barely matching its May finale), while Blue Bloods (10.9 mil/1.2) fell 6 and 29 percent from its year-ago opener and was down from its May finale (11.8 mil/1.4).

Over on ABC, Shark Tank returned to 7.5 mil/1.9, up from both its previous premiere and its May finale (6.7 mil/1.7).

Fox’s Utopia (1.9 mil/0.7) rose 25 percent and two tenths week-to-week, while a Gotham pilot encore did 2.5 mil/0.7. Over There, Fringe‘s Season 7 premiere* drew 2.9 million total viewers and a 1.0 rating.

The CW’s Masters of Illusion (1 mil/0.3) dropped 27 and 25 percent.

*This was humor. Fringe ended after Season 5.

Is this bad news for amazing race? Has it been renewed past this cycle? I hope it goes on

    • Moment says:

The Amazing Race is renewed for 2 seasons at a time by CBS and has been for years.

      • Kevin says:

I think ratings will rise, a lot of people including me didn’t know it’s now on Friday! So I’ll tune in next week definitely. Amazing Race also wins emmys (10 times now) for CBS, so I doubt they’ll cancel it anytime soon

I feel once football is over, TAR will get pushed back to Sundays. These numbers are horrible, but outside of The Good Wife, it’s the only CBS show that still wins Emmys. I don’t think CBS wants to lose that. But (whistle) what the hell happened to the rest of the lineup?

  3. KN says:

Matt, you work weekends? Thanks for the update!

  4. Moment says:

When The Amazing Race was last renewed, it was renewed for 2 seasons which covers Season 25(Current) and Season 26. CBS may be contractually obliged to let production on Season 26 go ahead. Depending on how badly Season 25 does, CBS may hold Season 26 until Summer(If they don’t try and save this season that is). It may become a once a year series, but that’s not a bad thing, Big Brother thrived in the Summer. In my guess, if production doesn’t go ahead by late nov it’s canceled.

    • Ben says:

5.5/1.1 is unlikely to be considered devastating for a Friday – but why did they move Amazing Race from the slot in which it did so well for so long?

      • ChicagoDan says:

CBS was delusional thinking MS would be a demo hit like TAR. Even with a superinflated football lead-in to 60M (because of Overtime) and zero scripted competition, MS barely scraped a 2.0. Let’s see what happens tonight with no football and OUAT & Fox comedies opposite MS. CBS will probably move TAR back sooner rather than later. TAR also was hurt by ST starting an hour earlier. Look for TM and/or UB to be in the 8/7 Friday slot when TAR returns to Sundays.

  5. Reah says:

H50 should had been canceled long time ago. It’s awful . LOL Orci&K did a horrible job with this one but they brought Scorpio this season, best show ever !

  6. “Fringe‘s Season 7 premiere” evil.

  7. Lizo says:

is anyone else getting really bored of the Amazing Race casting the same type of people every season?! I liked when this show used to have regular Americans going on an amazing journey around the world. Now it’s all rich beautiful people. Snore. If the teams didn’t wear different colours I wouldn’t be able to tell some of them apart.

    • Moment says:

They’re not all ‘rich’ beautiful people. If anything TAR does cast a lot of mactors and minor celebs but they’re far from being rich.

  8. Rick Katze says:

Fringe would have been an improvement over Fox’s boring Friday night lineup.

  9. tvgal says:

Lmao at the Hawaii 5 0 ratings.I thought the crazy steve/danny shippers said the show lost viewers because of catherine and that when she’s gone the ratings would be high!Thank God I didn’t bother to watch that show with only one female and six dudes!this could be its last season!

  10. Marty says:

You must mean attempt at “humor”, no?

  11. sarah j says:

H50 and Blue Bloods are 2 great shows.

    • Em Cooper says:

Couldn’t agree more–plus, with the school year starting and high school/college football games commencing–DVR’s are being put to full potential. Really do not understand why certain people have to be so hostile towards a show. If you hate it so badly, why bother watching and commenting on it–if I was home on Friday night, our family would have watched it. We used our DVR instead–as far as “lmao” at poor ratings over a TV show–wow, get out more if that’s how you get your jollies……..

      • Lexi says:

Thank you!!! If they don’t like the show go watch something else.. it’s the same with NCIS get a grip people..why are you watching a show if you hate it soon much..

    • Agree – DVR is working on overtime this week. Including TAR, watched both shows the following day. Busy watching Thursday night on Friday night. LOL

  12. 8.9 is still considered good for H50, right? the last great Friday show for me was Fringe(ironically), and look how that turned out… can I move to “Over There”?

  13. Delante says:

I got the Fringe humor even before you said it was humor…LOL!

  14. Kate says:

I don’t think CBS publicized the show’s move to Fridays very well. People probably don’t realize it’s there.

  15. I thought both H50 and Blue Bloods were both great premieres.

  16. Saabgirlatx says:

Blue bloods was outstanding this week, but I don’t recall seeing any promos for the premiere!
