Game of Thrones Adds Jonathan Pryce, Deep Space Nine Alum and More, Casts Sand Snakes for Season 5

Westeros gets more crowded every year.

HBO’s Game of Thrones announced several additions to its already large cast at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday, including Jonathan Pryce (the Pirates of the Caribbean films) and Alexander Siddig (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine).

Siddig, more recently seen in Da Vinci’s Demons, will play Doran Martell, the even-tempered ruling lord of Dorne and older brother to the late (sniff) Oberyn Martell.

Pryce’s role is the High Sparrow, a religious leader followed by large numbers of the poor and sick. He’s a man of the people who hates corruption… which means he’s going to get along famously with the Lannisters, right?

The fantasy drama also cast three of Oberyn’s bastard daughters, known to readers of George R.R. Martin’s novels as the Sand Snakes. Relative newcomer Rosabell Laurenti Sellers will play Tyene Sand, Keisha Castle-Hughes (Whale Rider) will play Obara Sand, and British actress Jessica Henwick will play Nym Sand.

In addition, Thrones‘ fifth season will feature newcomer Toby Sebastian as Doran’s son Trystane Martell, who is betrothed to Cersei’s daughter, Myrcella; DeObia Oparei (Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides) as Doran’s palace guard captain, Areo Hotah; and Enzo Cilenti (Rome) as a former slave trader who crosses paths with Daenerys.

The series also recast Myrcella, previously played by Aimee Richardson, with newcomer Nell Tiger Free.

Thrones‘ fifth season will bow in 2015.

  1. Keisha Castle-Hughes was outstanding in Whale Rider. That was 10 years ago, but I’m still very interested to see her on a major production.

  2. Margaery says:

    The Sand Snakes are Coming!

  3. Zach says:

In before people whine about no Arianne and Quentyn.

    • FtheFreys says:

Why is disagreeing with some decisions with the casting whinning? I am tired of people labeling arguments as whinning in an effort to discredit other people’s opinion without raising an argument of their own.

    • Isobel says:

Maybe they just reference them this season and bring them in next one, because Dany’s storyline isn’t up to them and GoT moves slow, I was expecting the Dornish ages ago

  4. Moment says:

Alexander Siddig is a great bit of casting. I guess the role fits in with his Atlantis work schedule.

  5. Lizo says:

Ah crap, that means I have to actually watch GoT now because Siddig is one of my favourite actors. He’s just so damn good at everything.

  6. Joey says:

I want to see castings for Wyman Manderly, Jeyne Poole and Barbrey Dustin. I need more stuff happening in the north next season!

  7. Jenn says:

Any word on Arianne Martell? Other sites are billing Trystane as heir to Dorne, I hope they didn’t cut her.

    • Joey says:

Even if Dorne followed other kingdoms’ inheritance rights, Quentyn would still be ahead of Trystane in the line of succession. Kind of hope they cut Quentyn since his arc was pretty boring, but Arianne is a really good character plus she ties in with a lot of other Dornish characters they’ve already cast!

  8. Tran says:

Wasn’t Alexander Siddig the same actor who was also on the sixth season of 24?

  9. kirads09 says:

Oh Yay Siddig is one of my favorites

  10. Colleen says:

Really excited about Alexander Siddig cast as Doran. He’s such a good actor. I’m so happy to see him cast on this kind of high profile show.

  11. Ian says:

A new black character? I almost yayed, before seeing he’s only the bodyguard for a Martell. How thrilling…
