Arrow Recaplet: Black Canary Is Unmasked

Get More: Recaps

Arrow Sara Lance Is Black CanaryThis week on The CW’s Arrow, even more revelations and DC name-checks were flying, as Oliver got a good look at the Black Canary and another ominous adversary was unmasked.

If I may first indulge in my own flashback… not to a remote island and my own bad wig, but to this past summer’s TCA press tour. There, CW boss Mark Pedowitz — in the course of teasing Black Canary’s introduction during Arrow Season 2 — matter-of-factly noted that the blonde badass would be revealed as Laurel’s “dead” sister Sara.

Perhaps Pedowitz misunderstood what all had gotten out there at that point, or was unclear on what Arrow‘s creatives ideally wanted kept close to the vest. Whatever the case, in retrospect, it’s simply a shame that the reveal was spoiled for anyone. Because as I watched that unmasking scene tonight, all I could think was, “Jaws should be dropping, gasps should be gasped,” since given all intel to date, Sara is perhaps the last person we’d expect to see alive and well.

But even so, even with some viewers expecting that bombshell, this episode marked a thrilling shift for the series. As my industry peer Damian Holbrook tweeted during the hour, the Oliver/Canary scenes were like “comic-book porn,” especially as they took on, kicking ass in tandem, a small army of well-armed gang bangers — even swapping weapons of choice for a beat.

Beyond that visceral thrill, there’s all the good this wrinkle does for other areas of the canvas. Every lament from Quentin Lance about the daughter he lost now is processed through a new filter. There’s now a new set of eyes to (discreetly) look on as Laurel loses herself to drink and pills. And Oliver, we now know that he carries the burden of having known Sara survived the Queen’s Gambit catastrophe, even though he’d later see her “die” “again” (presumably on the ship where the latest flashbacks now show him being held captive — by his roughened, toughened ex-lover).

As for the woman behind Sara Lance’s “mask,” I know none of actress Caity Lotz’s previous work, but so far, so good. She’s Oliver-like stoic when she needs to be, yet also lets slip the inner pain Sara feels as she overhears her father in the next room recounting his drunken days or bemoaning Laurel’s altered self. Added bonus: With BC comes Bex Taylor-Klaus as Sin, who has improved the Roy Harper/Thea side of the canvas by 125 percent, just by being Bex Taylor-Klaus.

As one last bit of icing, this week’s hour closed with another big, if not unexpected reveal — that conscientious alderman Sebastian Blood wants not to help his city as an elected mayor but by building himself a chemically charged army, in the guise of Brother Blood.

All told, Arrow has loaded its quiver with a bounty of fun and familiar faces for Season 2, and it promises to be an exciting ride as the pieces ultimately coalesce.

What did you think of the Black Canary reveal? And how are you liking Arrow Season 2 thus far?

  • Oliver like stoic = Amell’s wooden acting :p

    • Yep, totally agree. Love the show, but Amell, for me, has never risen about “just okay” in the lead role(and sorry, but over 2 dozen episodes in and I still long for Justin Hartley as Arrow; thank goodness I’ve got Revenge for my Hartley fix).

      • Amell’s much better than you suggest, and Hartley overstated. I like both in general, but come on. Still whining about Hartley not being Arrow (which he never ever was going to be due to rights issues) is absurd.

        • I think Amell is a lot more nuanced then people give him credit for. It’s not Emmy winning or anything but there are subtle shifts in his body language and tone depending on who he’s playing.

I loved Justin Hartley as much as the next guy but he would not have fit into the Arrow of this world very well.

          • I completely agree with you Zayne. Amell deserves more credit for his performance. Lots of layers to watch if you bother doing so. The only weak link for me was his earlier Island work in the first season but that too has evolved as the Island Oliver evolves.

          • I absolutely agree with you. HIs performance is very nuanced and it suits his character. I’m glad he’s not over the top. I think Amell is perfect for the way this show is written. He also seems like a first class guy so I’m happy for him.

  • I loved the Brother Blood reveal. The show actually had me thinking that they were going to do an “evolution of a villain” plot line with Sebastian Blood slowly transitioning from good guy alderman to super villain (like what Smallville did with Lex and what everybody thought that they were going to do with Tommy last season). But instead they skipped all that. Sebastian’s not becoming Brother Blood… he already is him.

  • I wish Smallville had been this liberal with the DC references instead of making us think about who this or that villain could sorta, kinda be. This really is comic book porn. I love every second of it…

except Laurel Lance. I think they ruined her character so bad in Season One that we cna’t accept her as a helpless character. I think a lot of fans wouldn’t mind pushing her down that rabbit hole she’s hovering over. They have a lot of work to do to repair her in the eyes of the viewers, but with the way this staff has improved on everything else that was lacking in S1, I have faith that they can do it.

    • Smallville and DC Comics learned that the fans really really loved all the comic book references even if they are small characters (most of my DC knowledge outside the main characters all came from watching Justice League Unlimited). The last couple seasons of Smallville was basically all that.

    • My husband watched the episode first and told me that something “huge” happened, but when I watched it later, I wasn’t surprised at all. It was hinted at in the first season that Sara was still alive, and I guessed that she was the Canary in last week’s episode, when she saw the text about Laurel being kidnapped and immediately ran off to save her.

Comment by Katie – November 1, 2013 06:07 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
  • This show has taken new life this season. Where most shows have second season slumps, Arrow is one of the sadly slim minority of having an even better second season. It feels like a completely different show at times. From how the shows storytelling is framed to how the actors are well acting. The writers have stepped up their game and all the actors have vastly improved now a year in their roles.

Having known about Black Canary being Sarah since it was announced months ago I still found myself excited at the reveal. I can only imagine what it would of been like had that information not spread like a wildfire on every Arrow related story and message board. The entire set-up leading to the reveal from Felicity’s realization that it was Laurel not Ollie that was being tracked to the unmasking was the show at its best. That scene on the roof top with Oliver using a trick arrow to capture her with ear mufflers to boot was so well done. That moment conveyed so much emotion and drama that I just haven’t seen between Oliver and Laurel. You can tell there was a history between them with only a few looks and words. A really well acted part by both.

The villain of the week was actually one of the better fleshed out ideas the shows had. I know some people are getting tired of the format being the same each week in that regards. I find myself to still be enjoying it. It helped that The Mayor reminded me a lot of Gunn’s gang from Angel when they went bad. The only weak spot to that ordeal was the cops not doing anything when they came rolling up shooting assault rifles in the air. However the Black Canary and Green Arrow fight scene more than made up for it. It was in that scene I found myself hoping the she become a new main cast member and quickly. The fight coordinators out did themselves with the action going on. It was movie level in my opinion. Also I didn’t realize how badly I needed to see the weapon swap until after it happen. That whole sequence was a win.

As for the side stories this week. This was the first time Roy’s and Thea’s story made any real sense in the context of the show. It didn’t seem like something that was tact on as an after thought. Whether that was just because of Sin or the writer of the episode I’m not sure. I just hope it continues. The only downside to the episode was Laurels sprial into pills. It made for a great scene with her father. The problem I had is with so much going on with everyone else it feels like dead weight. It bring the actions and excitement down when it was on screen.

  • freaking awesome. this show is too good. I’m the first to admit that I’m sort of a big DC fanboy and had my quips about the direction they were taking with Black Canary (it was pretty obvious that it was Sara Lance) but they totally pulled it off, and while Caity Lotz isn’t the most gifted actress she is perfect for the role and did excellent work this episode. the Brother Blood reveal was so awesome i loved the mask. with the mention of STAR labs I wonder if the injection was kryptonite like others have suggested.

Comment by James D – October 30, 2013 08:53 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
    • I’m thinking that the STAR labs thing is building up to the Flash.

The injection actually reminded me more of Bane. I hadn’t even thought of kryptonite. I hope they don’t go there. Too “Smallville”.

        • I do like that they’re building up to it and making it a big deal, rather than just throwing it out in one episode and changing the entire nature of the series without trying to rationalize it. I expect that this will keep building up for a while.

  • I wasn’t surprised at all, since inconsiderate people have been posted spoilers without any warning since earlier this summer. Back in the say, people would post spoiler warnings and allow people who wished to avoid major spoilers to be on their merry way. Today, all hints of consideration have gone out the window. Spoilers are posted on Yahoo’s front page as though nobody in the world would possibly want to be surprised by the shocking twists. It’s annoying as he!!.

That aside, there are a lot of things that I liked about this episode. I rolled my eyes when Oliver suggested the guns for cash program, because the only people who hand over the guns are the people who would use them as self defense. But my point was made in the show when the event was shot up and nobody in the area had any means of defending themselves. It’s kinda like Oliver’s no-kill policy… it’s swell in theory, as long as nobody is trying to kill you. Otherwise it’s just a stupid, naive philosophy.

I really enjoy the Oliver/Laurel interaction this year. Take away the romantic elements and make them friends, and suddenly there is humor and chemistry between them. It’s really nice. I hope they stay just friends for a while and don’t force romance.

The Black Canary storyline is turning out to be pretty interesting as well. Overall, the season is coming along nicely. I hope they can keep it up.

That thing you just made a joke about is actually not a punchline when you take facts into consideration.

          • And then consider the crimerates in countries with bans on guns….those countries have less murder, less armed robberies and less mass murders.

Comment by Annemijk – October 31, 2013 07:51 AM PDT
          • It isn’t really possible to get into a whole debate here, but any scientifically minded person will tell you that until the data is collected the same way in every country, you can’t compare the different findings. Not all crimes are classified the same way in every country.

But the important point when we get down to it is, why are all of these mass shootings happening in gun free zones? And why aren’t we taking into account events where someone’s plan for a mass shooting was thwarted by another person who was able to stop the shooter? Friggin military bases are being shot up because soldiers can’t carry weapons. SOLDIERS!

Show me where stricter gun control has helped anything in America. Why discuss other countries whose data isn’t collected the same way as ours when we have plenty of samples to discuss right here? Washington DC. Chicago. What about them?

Comment by Drew – October 31, 2013 09:21 AM PDT
          • You always have to take into account PER CAPITA:
“Analysis of figures from the European Commission showed a 77 per cent increase in murders, robberies, assaults and sexual offences in the UK since [the] Labour [Party] came to power.
“The total number of violent offences recorded compared to population is higher than any other country in Europe, as well as America, Canada, Australia and South Africa.
“The UK had a greater number of murders in 2007 than any other EU country — 927 — and at a relative rate higher than most western European neighbours, including France, Germany, Italy and Spain.
It gets worse. “Overall, 5.4 million crimes were recorded in the UK in 2007 — more than 10 a minute — second only to Sweden. . . . It means there are over 2,000 crimes recorded per 100,000 population in the UK, making it the most violent place in Europe.”
Great Britain’s crime rate is nearly four times that of the United States. “By comparison, America has an estimated rate of 466 violent crimes per 100,000 population.”

        • Problem is your using one of the few NRA statements that are true lol. First off its a failure of the police that they had like 4 cops at a GUN EVENT in the GLADES when they KNOW a psycho named the “Mayor” has M4 machine rifles and probably would have a issue with the gun buy back problem. And second, you dont think if everyone there had picked up one of their turned in guns and loaded it and shot one bullet…of the 25-50 people there at the event not two of the bullets would have entered the two shooters?

  • I loved this episode. I am a big fan of Caity, and she is amazing as the BC. It totally looks like its her (im assuming it is) in the fight scenes (considering she has a strong martial arts background) and that makes the scenes all the more fun. She is a good actress, the roll is cool and DEEP…its not some shallow “the sister is back from the dead!” story line..she has a history since the Yacht sank and her own “crucible” story like Oliver does with the Island. Essentially they have given her the equivalent to the main stars story but unique. So shes like 2 episodes into being on the show (significantly) and shes already got more character development, depth, and range to show her acting than anyone besides Stephen. Lol. Which is part of the reason why i really really really wish they decided (i know it kinda doesnt work) that she is the “love” for Oliver and she is the permanent BC.
I know Laurel is supposed to be BC, and is obviously played to be Oliver’s true love, but theres problems with that, to begin with BC is supposed to be one of the best fighters out there, so how will Laurel be trained? It took Oliver and Sarah YEARS to have the talents they do. Also, they are not writing Laurel that well and the fans dont exactly seem to love Katie Cassidy. I still havent decided if i think shes a good actress in this or not.
Two things im still worried about: The Laurel transformation into BC and if they just have Oliver train her or Sarah train her for a few months…i think that will disappoint a LOT of fans. 2) The Flash, they found a way to have BC have her “Canary Cry” with technology not a super power, and i like it. But the Flash BETTER have super speed from a super power. Dont hurt the show by trying to stick to the Nolan Batman model and not have ANY super powers at all.

Comment by M3rc Nate – October 30, 2013 09:16 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
    • I think it’s been established that the Flash will be the introduction of meta-humans on this show. So don’t worry about that.

I’m hoping that they don’t rush turning Laurel into Black Canary. They have an entire series to play with this transformation. There’s no need to get her to the point of putting on the costume until season 5 at least. We know she has some basic self defense training, so she’s not starting from scratch, but she has a way to go and it would lesson Oliver’s story if she just jumped into the role.

Comment by Drew – October 30, 2013 09:36 PM PDT  Reply To This Post

      • Laurel will become the real Black Canary when her sister dies, or I should say gives up her life in defense of Laurel. The BC siren call will naturally come to Laurel who will be shocked the first time she uses it as it will be unplanned.

Wait and see. By the end of this season, Laurel will be the Black Canary.

    • I’ve always had a soft spot for Katie Cassidy, so I was excited to see her become BC. Honestly though, after last night, I’d really prefer they drop that and just keep Caity around. I liked her WAY more than I thought I would, and based off her interactions with Oliver tonight, I’d really prefer to see those two together…
Also, is anyone else concerned that they’ll transition Laurel over by killing Caity’s character? I’d be pretty depressed if that’s the plan, since she was the best new addition to this show since Felicity.

Comment by Christina – October 31, 2013 08:29 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
      • That’s my feeling as well, that Sara will somehow die and this will be Laurel’s motivation to becoming the black canary. And if that really should happen, then it would be a huge mistake. ‘m sorry, but this is the second female that’s been introduced to the show that has somehow managed to make a bigger impact with the audience and blend so well into the story, while Laurel is still swaying in the wind. I’m certain that it’s not just Katie Cassidy’s acting and lack of chemistry with Oliver, it’s the writing for the character as well. But it would seem as if Ms Cassidy/ Laurel is just not cutting it.

        • I 100% agree with you both. I have no clue if Caity wants to be permanently on a TV show, but i hope they offer her the gig and if they were planning on killing her…i would be more than happy to accept her being VERY injured and Laurel then taking up the BC name and outfit while she recovers, then becoming the BC permanently and when Sara wakes up from Coma or w/e, she accepts its time to move on and reveals shes alive to her Dad and joins Oliver in his “cave” or takes up a new Hero name/costume (think Batman/Nightwing) or SOMETHING to keep her on the show.

I don’t think anyone would particularly miss Katie Cassidy on this show, either, if it meant that Caity Lotz was sticking around as the Black Canary. Her character has worked better than Laurel’s ever has, in my opinion, even after just this episode.

  • The reveal of Black Canary was anticlimactic. The moment in season 1 when Laurel was commenting on a photo of her sister & said she loved canarys or something like that I knew she’d be back. Clearly it was mapped out in season 1. So reading those interviews when the character was cast didn’t spoil anything for me since it was pretty evident. My grip is did no one die on that boat? Only Oliver’s dad & he had to kill himself.

It’s MARVEL vs DC and the fans are the winner in this COMIC BOOK genre age til major films by both hit the BIG SCREEN. Maybe the 50′s Westerns can be reborn again? Felicity Smoak was a completly different minor character in the comics. She was step-mother to the villain Firestorm.

There have been multiple Firestorms and I was refering to an older version who’s real name was Ronnie Raymond.

  • Really loved the episode. Amell nailed it in that scene with Diggs/Felicity – he’s really turned my initial perception of him as wooden around since S1. Laurel’s story – could care less and it’s all tied to the portrayer. Quentin – love. Black Canary – love. Sin – so happy to see this actress again! Arrow is definitely must see TV.

  • I love Sarah as Black Canary!!! The fight scene with Arrow and BC was amazing!!! Her and Oliver have better chemistry in one episode than Oliver and Laurel have had the entire show. The writers made Laurel so unlikeable the first season that now it almost seems too late. After seeing Sarah kick a** Laurel IMO will always be a second rate Black Canary. You can’t show us the girl who was trained by The League of freaking Assassins for years and then replace her with a girl who takes self defense at the Y. They need to keep Sarah around for a few seasons before she passes on the torch. Maybe then it will actually be believeable that Laurel is BC. I really hope they don’t screw this up!!! Black Canary has always been one of my favorites. And IMO Sarah embodies everything about the character that I love.

  • This season has been awesome. It’s like they were thinking what was good about season 1 and made it even better! Loving the BC storyline. As someone else said, this show is much better than Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. I’m so psyched about the Flash. Not a fan of who they picked to play him though. But, I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt until we see how he lives up to the part.

  • Maybe it’s just me, but I was getting some serious Killer Croc vibes when The Mayor was injected with that stuff. It may have just been the bright green color and his bleeding eyes, but that was my first thought. Anyone else get that feeling?

  • Perhaps because I just finished playing Batman: Arkham Origins, it was all Bane venom to me. Nothing even crossed my mind. But I had a bias.

I somehow managed to avoid the Sara/Black Canary spoilers this summer, so the reveal was fantastic. Though the second Felicity said she was following Laurel, I had a suspicion, like others have said.

Great show. Even for a non-comic book reader like myself.

  • awesome episode, love getting flashbacks that do NOT take place on the island for once.
the BC/Sarah reveal was very anti-climatic, thought it would’ve worked out better if the original actress was still there (does anyone know why they recast the part?)
loved the Brother Blood revea, everything was so great about this episode.
But I hope the writers when to cut their losses, and Laurel is one.

  • For some reason I thought I would like the actress playing the BC before she was unmasked. But now that she has and has had more interaction with Oliver and more speaking scenes in general, I’m really not likely her. She’s just as bad as Katie Cassidy. I feel like so far the only real strong female actors play Felicity, Moria and Thea. I know some people don’t really like Thea, but Willa plays her really well in my eyes. I like the actress who plays Sin as well. Even Kelly Hu who plays China White is ten times better than Katie and Caity IMO.Even Summer Glau in limited scenes has been way better than those two.

    • I’ve never been impressed by Emily Bett Rickards. She gets funny lines but says them all in the same monotone voice and Willa is just as bad. Susanna Thompson is the only great actress on the show but I’d put Katie in second.

  • So far I haven’t been impressed with Caity. Jaqueline McInnes-Wood looks much more like Katie Cassidy (like they couldn’t have TRIED to make them look similar? Her hair colour is even different) and her acting leaves a lot to be desired. She’s wooden as crap. Not that there are many Emmy contenders on Arrow.

    • Woods has a new reality show on E! in December, one of those Wild On remakes. Plus, I don’t know if she had the acting/action chops to be BC. She is pretty great as the hot mess/party girl. But as the angsty dark BC? I don’t know.

Plus, you know, contract issues. I am sure Caity Lotz was orders of magnitude cheaper than JMW.

  • Can we please keep Sarah as B.C.? I really like her with Arrow and they have much better chemistry than Oliver/Laurel. I also think it will be fun for the TV show to go in a different direction than the comics (much like The Walking Dead” does.

  • Congrats to the writers and cast of Arrow on beating the sophomore jinx and bustin’ it out of the gate this year. The early Black Canary reveal wasn’t a surprise given that the twist was leaked this summer, but the way it was woven into the story, giving Oliver entirely new depths of guilt to plumb was brilliant. The questions abound – How did Sara survive? Who does that ship belong to? How does Oliver get back to the island? Where are Slade and Shado? How do Sara and Slade get to know each other? Is Sara the person Slade learns to “emotionally connect” with? Where does the League of Assassins come into play and could we, maybe, hopefully, possibly be eventually blessed with the appearance of Ra’s Al Ghul himself? When, oh when, oh when is Slade arriving in Starling City? Love the use of the sonic “canary cry” device – a brilliant way to employ that great power without a hokey explanation for how she developed the power. Loved the Brother Blood reveal – I loved Kevin Alejandro in “Golden Boy” last season; I’m glad to see him bounce back and snag this great role. Can’t wait to see how Isabel works into the whole scheme – she is most likely the woman whose legs we saw in that shot in the Season 1 finale – how does she play into the destruction of the Queen’s Gambit? Its always a privilege to have Summer Glau on my TV machine.

Kudos to the cast for continuing to bring it and to the great new additions.

  • I figured out at the top of the hour who Black Canary really was. Even though I did, the episode was still fantastic. The fight scene with Sara and Oliver fighting with each other websites was like superhero foreplay, and I loved every second of it. My shipper heart can’t help but wonder what this means for Felicity and Oliver though. I’m thrilled to find out!

  • Mark Pedowitz is a moron. By spoiling the Canary’s identity, he robbed this episode of any real ‘shock value’, which drug down its quality (as did the pacing).

  • I don’t know about you Matt but I knew Sara would be back from the dead the moment it was revealed her body was never found. So, Pedowitz never ruined the moment for me.

In other news, I don’t know if it is just me or anyone else but did the ending scene with Blood remind anyone of The Scarecrow?

  • Anyone who watched Katie Cassidy on Supernatural knows she kicks ass and takes names. She’ll be an awesome Black Canary. I liked Caity Lotz but was a bit jarred by the changed actress from the pilot and re-shot sequence of her being dragged off the boat.

  • I want Caity Lotz and the awesome Bex Taylor-Klaus to be made full time cast members on the show. I know Laurel is supposed to be black canary, and i was looking forward to that hoping it would help her character. But if keeping Caity and Bex in the show full time, means that doesn’t happen i think i’d be alright with that.

  • Like season 2 so far but since he’s taking the no kill route in crime fighting, they should start showing him use more trick arrows instead of just wounding people. It would be cool if Felicity maybe started inventing them for Oliver to use since she wasn’t crazy about the killing thing at first. Or it could be a joint project between Felicity and Diggle to make them.
The other thing I wonder is since I remember Brother Blood being a Teen Titans villian, will they be using other heroes for the final fight to bring him down starting a mini Justice League again.
One thing I find strange though is Sara calling him Ollie. That was Dinah’s nickname for Oliver in the comics.

  • After watching it, all I can say now is that if they kill Sara off to promote Laurel as the BC (and I know that’s what everyone’s expecting), I’m going to be really upset. Sara is the Black Canary this show needs. Loved her with Oliver, loved her with Sin, looking forward to seeing her with her family and Team Arrow. If it has to be one or the other on the show, I vote for Sara, and Laurel can go away….maybe into rehab at the rate she’s going. I really really hope they aren’t foolish enough to kill off a potential hit of a character in favor of one who is so disliked. Not to mention how cruel that would be to her family to get her back and then lose her again, and for Oliver, to see her die three times.

  • I loved everything about the episode, except for the fact that Sara Lance is a mouth breather, due to her cologne enhanced lips. It’s just a pet peeve of mine, but seriously, go back and watch the whole episode. She can’t actually close her mouth all the way. It got very distracting. Other than that I thought she was a good enough actress, obviously a great stunt fighter. I can’t wait to see where this all goes. Just please for the love of god, close your damn mouth all the way.

    • I also wonder if they’ll ever introduce the green lantern!!!! And if they do , which one? Half Jordan, guy gardner, John Stewart or baz?

Allan Scott would obviously be too old and have kids of his own with the Harlequin ( not the batman one, different villainess)

If only a green streak against the night sky , I really really want to see a GL invoked on the show , even as just a reference.

The league of assassins was cool, I wonder if they’ll make references to Bruce Wayne ?

Marvel makes good movies but DC seems to own television.

Not so sure how I feel about the new superman / batman/ wonder woman movie without Christian Bale.
