What to Watch Sunday: Eerie Mentalist Reunion, Simpsons' Treehouse of Horror Opens and More

On TV this Sunday: The Mentalist just might have a family reunion on his hands, Hell on Wheels makes its final (?) stop, Fox’s Animation Domination lineup scares up early Halloween treats and we spy a memorable Homeland. As a supplement to TVLine’s original features (linked within), here are 10 programs to keep on your radar tonight.

7:30 The Cleveland Show (Fox) | Season 4 premiere: The kids go trick-or-treating dressed as their parents in an episode that kicks off an evening of Halloween-themed animated comedies: The Simpsons‘ annual Treehouse of Horror special (at 8 pm; watch a sneak peek), Bob’s Burgers (at 8:30 pm), Family Guy (at 9 pm) and American Dad! (at 9:30 pm).

PREVIEW | Lana Parrilla: Once Upon a Time Twist Is a ‘Victory’ for Regina, ‘Yet There’s a Layer of Guilt’

VIDEO | Exclusive: Once Upon a Time‘s Jennifer Morrison Previews Emma’s Fairytale Nightmare

8 pm MythBusters (Discovery) | Season 9 premiere: If “I’ll never let go, Jack” had you retorting, “You didn’t have to! There’s enough room on that board for both of ya,” then you won’t want to miss Titanic director James Cameron joining Adam and Jamie to tackle the series’ most requested myth ever. (And if you have no idea what I’m talking about, check this out.)

8 pm Call the Midwife (PBS) | This British series centers on a well-off young woman in her new career as a midwife (working alongside an order of healthcare-providing nuns) in London’s circa-1950s East End. Tonight, newcomer Chummy has trouble gaining Sister Evangelina’s respect.

8:30 pm Austin & Ally (Disney Channel) | Season 2 premiere: Austin’s new record-label owner, Jimmy Starr, invites him to play Ally’s new duet with Taylor Swift (!) at a Halloween party. Cue clever camera angles.

PREVIEW | Revenge Sneak Peeks: Nolan Sizes Up a Pretty Stranger, Amanda’s Put to the (Paternity) Test

9 pm Hell on Wheels (AMC) | Two-hour Season 2 finale: As the town celebrates, Cullen must battle to save Hell on Wheels. (No word yet on Season 3 renewal.)

9 pm Steel Magnolias (Lifetime) | This TV-movie update of the 1989 big-screen weeper follows a group of women who congregate at a Louisiana beauty parlor. Queen Latifah (Chicago), Phylicia Rashad (The Cosby Show), Jill Scott (The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency) and Alfre Woodard (Memphis Beat) pick up where Sally Field, Olympia Dukakis, Dolly Parton and Shirley MacLaine left off, while Rashad’s daughter Condola (Smash) fills the Julia Roberts role and newcomer Adepero Oduye subs for Daryl Hannah.

9 pm Dexter (Showtime) | Debra attempts to cure Dexter of his killer tendencies (isn’t that cute?). And seriously: What is Louis up to?

9:30 pm* The Good Wife (CBS) | Maura Tierney (ER) guest-stars as a wealthy businesswoman in an episode that finds Will working on his first post-suspension case and Alicia unexpectedly helping Peter’s campaign. (*Tonight’s CBS start times are adjusted because of a football double-header earlier in the day.)

PREVIEW | 666 Park Avenue‘s Rachael Taylor: Jane May Soon Lose Her Sanity and Her Relationship

10 pm Homeland (Showtime) | Carrie’s off-book mission in Beirut plans Abu Nazir squarely and literally in the crosshairs, then segues a white-knuckle ride. But nothing will prepare you for the final scene. (Watch our Spoiler Alert! video below to see the cast tease the twist.)

10:30 pm The Mentalist (CBS) | As the team investigates the murder of a diamond cutter, Jane comes across something potentially far more precious than gems: a girl claiming to be his late daughter Charlotte. (Get scoop!)

I was looking forward to seeing the remake of Steel Magnolias but last week I saw several clips from the movie and all I could picture was Julia Roberts, Sally and the ladies. I didn’t expect to hear the exact dialogue from the original. It felt more like copying than remaking. Kind of disappointed about that.

  • Homeland, Boardwalk Empire, Dexter, Treme, Hell on Wheels, Fox comedies. I tried that 666 show a few days ago finally. Is it just a TV remake of Needful Things? It kind of looks like that.

  • Definatly The Mentalist. Now all I have to do is watch the idiot box carefully so that as well as watching I can get the whole show on DVR as I’ve always done in the past. Why has CBS moved it to such a miserable time slot. I like to watch it again. Grrrrrrrrrr
Thank goodness I now have the previous seasons on DVD.
