Grey's Anatomy Boss Opens Up About Finale's Two Big Exits: 'It Made Me Sick, It Made Me Sad'

Grey's Anatomy Season 8 FinaleYou. Were. Warned.

Early Thursday, Grey’s Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes issued the following alert to fans via Twitter: “Do not expect to be comforted or happy at end of the GA finale. I wrote it and even I found the ending to be very unsettling.”

She wasn’t kidding.

Although we’ve known for weeks that a Seattle Grace vet would meet an untimely end in this week’s plane crash-themed season climax, the death still packed a wallop — mostly because it came so early in the hour (defying finale convention). And, more importantly, because the character’s last name is in the title of the freakin’ show!

Yep, Rhimes went and killed Lexie!

Truth is, Little Grey, played for five seasons by Chyler Leigh, didn’t stand a chance. Trapped beneath the wrecked fuselage, she was barely able to say a final goodbye to despondent ex Mark before she slipped away in the episode’s first 20 minutes. The death triggered a meltdown in sister Meredith (Ellen Pompeo really brought it, huh?) while Mark (an equally impressive Eric Dane) completely shut down. We would later discover that McSteamy was battling more than just a broken heart — he suffered something called a “cardiac tamponade,” as Cristina quickly diagnosed. She and Mer then performed some eww-inducing emergency surgery and saved his life. (Arizona and Derek also sustained serious injuries but, thankfully, survived.)

Meanwhile, back at Seattle Grace, Teddy nixed that Metcom offer and decided to remain at the hospital because she wanted to stay close to her dead husband’s ghost. And out of loyalty to Owen, who then turned around and fired her as a way to force her to take the job. (So long, Kim Raver!) Her exit would seem to pave the way for Cristina to become Seattle Grace’s new Cardio God.

UPDATE: After the West Coast airing, here is what Rhimes shared on Twitter about writing out Leigh and Raver:

Callie said it best tonight: Life changes in an instant. Turns on a dime.

This finale was incredibly hard to write. I did not enjoy it. It made me sick and it made me sad. We end the season not knowing ANYTHING about the future. Except for two things. We know we are definitely saying goodbye to two of my favorite people: Chyler Leigh (Lexie) and Kim Raver (Teddy).

I know this season’s finale had some surprises for viewers and the exit of Kim Raver was one of the big ones. But Kim’s series option was up and she was ready to give Teddy Altman a much-needed vacation. It’s been a pleasure working with someone as talented and funny and kind as Kim; everyone is going to miss her terribly. I like to imagine that Teddy is still out there in the Grey’s Anatomy universe, running Army Medical Command and building a new life.

I love Chyler and I love the character of Lexie Grey. She was an important member of my Grey’s family. This was not an easy decision. But it was a decision that Chyler and I came to together. We had a lot of thoughtful discussion about it and ultimately we both decided this was the right time for her character’s journey to end. As far as I’m concerned Chyler will always remain a part of the Shondaland family and I can’t wait to work with her again in the future.

I’d write more but I’m honestly too sad. I don’t like life changing in an instant and turning on a dime.

Elsewhere in the finale:

* Jackson decided to take the Tulane job, leaving best friend and lover April to mourn what could’ve been. (Sorry, no way Jesse Williams is leaving.)

* Bailey and Ben officially got engaged in one of the episode’s rare happy moments.

* Alex revealed in a voicemail to Arizona that he was accepting the position at Johns Hopkins. (Sorry, no way Justin Chambers is leaving.)

Reaction? Were you blindsided by the big death? When Lexie took her last breath, did you immediately flash back to this TVLine story from last fall and wonder if there was a connection? Which performance were you most impressed by? How long do you think Mer, Der, Cristina, Arizona and Mark will remain stranded in the middle of nowhere? Hit the comments!

        • I second that comment! I am so upset at Shonda Rhimes I could chew threw nails. I have stuck by Grey’s when they killed George, when Izzy left, when they moved Addison to a different locale, and through that horrible hospital shooting. I don’t want to be done, I really don’t. But I LOVED Lexie. I realize this is a show full of fictional characters but I am invested in my shows!!!! I feel so completely cheated out of watching her and Mark build a life together. I usually cry through the Grey’s finales but I was so mad, I couldn’t watch the Scandal finale the whole way through. I can not even begin to figure out how to sot down to watch the next episode in the fall. I just keep hoping that it’s some Lost-esque dream that Shonda will put right in the fall.

          • “This was not an easy decision. But it was a decision that Chyler and I came to together.” It is very upsetting, but it was something that both the writer and actor wanted/needed. I still love the show, and am still very faithful in watching…..Mer’s family just doesn’t make it…seems to be a trend? lol

How am I supposed to still watch the show when my favorite character, part of my favorite couple, will no longer be here.
            I still can’t believe it.

          • Don’t you think you guys are missing the point? The point is – Lexie & Mark wasted all that time NOT saying how they really felt – time is precious – true love is rare – “things can change on a dime” — the point is — what happened on the show happens in real life every day. Lexie was one of my favorites too – and I really wanted she and Mark to have their happily ever after – but in real life – you don’t always get the fairytale ending. Lots of us lose the people we love without ever telling them how much they really meant to us. THAT is the point. SAY WHAT YOU NEED TO SAY. Don’t wait. Don’t waste time. Don’t procrastinate on things that really matter.

          • Was anyone else annoyed with Meredith constantly yelling out “DEREK!” Ugh! I also love the fact that she still went looking for him knowing that Lexi was dying. Even after she died, Meredith whailed for a little bit and then continued on with her “DEREK!” I was hoping part of the plane that was stuck in a tree came crashing down on her to kill her off … she should have been the death in this episode!

          • I agree, this was just as bad and as a let down in acting as when ER had that helicoper fall/crash. Awful. I cry someone gets a hangnail, you can ask my family, and not one tear was shed over this episode, maybe because they built it up saying all of them cried at the table read, blah blah blah, wasn’t all that. Very disappointing.

          • I don’t care if that was the point. If that were always the point on Greys, the only people who would be together are maybe Christina and Owen. Maybe. Shonda yanked us around on Mer/Der for 4 seasons and we can’t get a satisfying payoff for Mark and Lexie?????? And Lexie still has story left… Now we’re stuck with the devirgined April/Jackson story, Alex who has no love interest, a supremely pissed off and/or shattered Owen and Christina and 3 couples who are pretty settled: Calzona, Mer/Der, and Bailey and Ben. The only couple that was really left to root for was Mark and Lexie. Now Sloan is going to be dark and twisty.
I promise, Shonda, I will forgive you if you take the easy way out and make it someone’s dream or nightmare. Just please bring back Lexie!!!!! If you can bring back Denny, there’s gotta be a way to bring back Lexie. Ohhhh can Mark get a brain rumor too?

          • Lots of fans feel the same way. We’ve been through so much as fans. But now I think Eric Dane might leave as well? We don’t know if he renewed his contract so Mark might die. To be honest, I would want to die, too, if I were Mark. And we all know there isn’t much storyline for him without Lexie. They were perfect for each other but their stories were laughable in the end. Mark has so much potential but after Addison left and he broke up with Lexie, it only turned south. The whole Callie/Arizona/Mark storyline was awful and horrible to watch. I wonder if Mark will survive this… and I wonder if Grey’s Anatomy will survive the backlash since fans are VERY angry. Shonda thinks she can pull off anything but she can’t. She could have had Lexie relocate to another hospital or something, anything but this. I didn’t cry either because I couldn’t believe Shonda would do this. I hope for Mark that he dies, too. Too sad, this.

          • You defined exactly what I thought. One thing is killing off a major character, another is killing off someone as beloved and important to the storyline as Lexie. I honestly, HONESTLY, think that even a veteran character like Karev would cause less anger. I was so mad with this decision that I couldn’t even pay much attention on the rest of the episode. Worst decision I’ve ever seem on a tv show. It’s gonna be hard to come back to Grey’s Anatomy next season.

          • You people are so stupid!!!!!! Killing lexie was unexpected & that’s what makes it good! Killing the most “annoying” character or the one with less ties to the storyline is predictable. Who gives a crap for the reason lexie died, it was a good twist. Oh, and by the way, in real life you aren’t always given 40 minutes to say goodbye all nice and sweet….sometimes sh-t happens. The fact mark and lexie never got back together because lexie died so quickly is just an example of what can ACTUALLY HAPPEN IN LIFE!!!!! If the show was always about happy endings it would be boring. Stop bitching, it was a great season finale.

I really haven’t watched the show since – maybe a few episodes here and there, but not every show. I used to before they killed George off. I didn’t like Izzie leaving either, but at least her character has a chance of coming back, George and now Lexie does not. Sad, but Ms. Rhimes had her reasons for writing the story line in that direction – it is after all her baby. We just watch and cry when our favorite character’s die :(

          • I agre with “somethinglikeasupernova”, Our family experienced 10 deaths in one year in 2010. the one thing we learned liked Callie said….like Callie experienced….she went through a wind shield, nearly lost her baby and nearly died herself. The one message given here is life has no guarantees, if it did it would probably be boring which Grey’s is not. It fits so closely to real life it’s freaky. Can’t wait to watch….no change that am marking down the calendar to watch, gotta know what happens. Can’t out guess Shonda which is why I tune in ! You go Shonda, keep it real, not popular ! This was her “Sophy’s Choice”

It almost ruined the show completely for me when George died and Izzy left!! You have to put it all back together now, and that would definitely make that happen!!! Please do that for your viewers!!!!!!!!!!! P.S. It was a good finale, cuz we’re all DYING to see what comes next.

          • It appears that even given its soap opera context, Grey’s Anatomy has managed to create characters with enough dimension to commit viewers to them. Hemingway said that every true story ends in death. I received considerable scorn from an ex-wife and several subsequent lovers and friends (all female) because I killed off a major character in my first novel. Even now, as I question their literary depth, I am secretly pleased at drawing a character of such depth as to elicit such emotion from them.

          • Lexie dying really did me in. I though finally we were going to have a Mark and Lexie wedding. I know this is just a show but we are invested in these roles these people play. The problem was when the show aired the only 2 that contracts on the table were Marks and Lexie. Mark went with Lexie like a glove. I still miss George and Izzie and even Denny. Couldnt Shondra of killed a lesser person off like in the shooting episode. Im still hoping that after all the posts and complaints that Lexie maybe can be found alive with a faint pulse.Mark was so great at the end they just went together.I just dont get it I really dont.

“Earlier this year, I made the decision that Season eight would be my last on “Grey’s Anatomy.” I met with Shonda and we worked together to give Lexie’s story appropriate closure. I am very lucky to have worked with this amazing cast and crew for five seasons. My experience on “Grey’s Anatomy” is something that I will treasure for the rest of my life. I want to take this time to say thank you to the fans. Your unconditional love and support have made these last five years very special for me. I look forward to my next chapter and I hope you will continue to follow me on my journey.”

          • Anger and bitterness is a very real part of the grieving process. When someone we love so much dies, there’s a human need to say “If only…” or to repeatedly ask things like “WHY? Why HER?” And since they remain unanswered questions, we eventually draw the conclusion that somethig — or, more likely someONE — is to blame. The airplae crashed. We can blame the weather, the pilot, the aircraft mechanic, you name a reason. But Shonda’s the first easy target right now. When George died… (.007 hit by a BUS?) it about broke my heart until I realized that in “real life” he wanted out of the show — nad for awhile I was mad at HIM!! I think the whole latent purpose of Grey’s Anatomy is to allow viewers to feel things, to experiennce their emotions. The season finale is always a killer (hmmm, a bit of a pun there…) and this one was a real doozer.

          • I don’t hate that Lexie died. It was realistic that there aren’t always happy endings in real life. Plus why should Grey’s Anatomy be turned into a soap opera with a lot of different love stories? I am tired of all of the stupid love angles to this drama: what about their jobs? what about larger political and social issues? Everyone is just talking about fairy tale romances which is boring and unrealistic. In real life, there would never be tons of doctors hooking up together at hte same hospital. The whole idea that there are tons of gay and African American doctors at a hospital without any discrimination is unbelievable. There is no humiliation of the nursing stafff. This show is already too fluffy and soapy to be believable as it is. Who the hell cares if a couple characters don’t get their fairytale happy endings?

        • I agree Shonda Rimes is not necessarily solely responsible for killing off Lexie. Also understand Lexie is a fictional character and Chyler Leigh may have opted for this. I think the big disapointment of the fans (in addition to her being killed off) is the writing was a bit flat and certainly not enough time for this beloved character to say goodbye (regardless that sometimes it happens this way in real life). I will remain a fan as long as the storylines and writing continue to be of a certain caliber. I believe the writers and creator could’ve done a better job with Lexie’s dying.

          • Thank you! I have been looking for a way to put words to my disappointment. Flat is a good description. I’ve seen every episode of Grey’s there is and know better, but if this was the only episode I had ever seen I would have thought these are some horribly bad actors, and even worse writing.

          • EXACTLY. It’s her show, she’s obvious an arrogant piece of trash who doesn’t want to take the fall for this and is blaming Chyler. I say she should MAN UP. She IS solely responsible for HOW she killed Lexie. She is the writer. She creates the stories, the characters, their beginnings and their ends. She should have written a better ending. I’m tempted to think they’re holding back an interview with Chyler Leigh because she’s as insulted with Lexie’s pathetic ending as her fans are. Shonda wanted Lexie to die? Sure, it’s her show! But writing her off like that? That is inexcusable! Too ridiculous.

      • I have been following Grey’s since season 1 and I am a huge, huge fan. With that said, I was so disappointed with this finale. Shonda Rhimes made a GIGANTIC mistake killing Lexie. I can’t believe it… Lexie?! I feel that so much more could have been done with Lexie, she had so many possible storylines. Not to mention the fact that every fan wanted a Mark/Lexie reunion. What’s Mark going to do now… mope until he finds another “love”? My other issue was not only that she died, but after all that she meant to the show.. you give her that crappy ending? She spoke like 10 lines and died? It wasn’t enough for me to grasp that she was really dying and Mark was losing his true love.

Arizona, on the other hand, would have been a perfect death. She doesn’t have many storylines to work with and her death would’ve led to another amazing performance from Sara Ramirez (the Tony Award winner). I’m so disappointed in Shonda. Such a bad move and yet another cliffhanger… I understand that you didn’t know which actors would come back, but it was just all too predictable and frustrating.

If I could curse and it still be on this post… God help you woman. I don’t give a crap what happens to the rest of them. We all know MerDer are leaving, Mark is going to be despondent, I love Cristina but don’t see her staying, and Alex well he has never been a favorite of mine. Kepner can go to **** and Avery, too much of a pretty boy. You killed my favorite character, didn’t really give her any time to say, REALLY say goodbye, and you cheated us the hell out of a Mark and Lexie reunion after teasing all season.

          • I agree that it may have been a bad move to kill lexie and we all wanted a mark lexie reunion. However, the series has not gone to the dogs. Ellen Pompeo, Patrick Dempsey, Sandra Oh, and Justin Chamber have all signed for two more seasons, they’re not going to have them all leave the hospital and have one gigantic scattered series. They will stay, or it will work out. Now, as much as we love Lexie, she had no obligations on the show. Een though she was a great character, she wasn’t dating anybody (Mark never stepped up), she didn’t have kids, and she hadn’t even finished residency. Arizona however, is married, technically has a kid, and is the head of Peds at SGH, if she died, that would be terrible. And If you remember, “Calzona” had their tragedy last year. Greys is still amazing. Shonda can’t give everybody what they want all the time.

          • Why is everyone placing some monumental blame on Shonda Rhimes when thus far, no one has any factual idea as to why Chyler Leigh is leaving the show.

            Such childish outbursts!

The show was fabulous before Lexie Grey, she contributed to the storyline written while it lasted. None of us have any right to defame and slander the creator, head writer, and executive producer of the show! Actors often leave a series for a multitude of reasons! I think it is careless and juvenile to lash out at Shonda Rhimes when none of us have the full details as to what led up to Chyler Leigh leaving.

Remember people, Lexie Grey is NOT the actress, she is the character!! Chyler Leigh may have simply been ready to move on. .Did anyone consider that notion? I am not sure of the reasons nor have I researched any sort of formal statement about it but I do know that it’s simply reactionary to point such ugly fingers at Shonda Rhimes.

I will NOT EVER stop watching Grey’s Anatomy by choice!! Fan for life and PROUD of it!!

          • There’s a difference between leaving and getting killed off. If Chyler Leigh wanted out, there were a million ways for Shonda to write her out WITHOUT killing her. She could have left to do an internship at another hospital or something. Then she could have returned in the Series Finale to get her happy ending with Mark.

It’s not Lexie’s exit people are upset about — it’s the WAY in which it happened.

You feel involved. However, I think you’re a little harsh. Just because you’re upset they killed lexie you want the show to be cancelled? That’s what makes a series interesting. If writers always wrote happy endings it would become boring. I wish it ended differently, but I will tune in until the end.

I loved Lexie but it sounds like Chyler and Shonda came to a mutual decision on the death. She didn’t want to fire her from the show. I think there’s still story left to tell. “i’m done with the series” declaration but i’m pretty sure the actress herself kind of factored into the whole killing off lexie thing. their was a point when she said in a interview that she ASKED for less screen time to be with her husband and kids. …. maybe she wanted out & shonda gave her an out just like she did GEORGE o’mally (t.r. knight). george wasnt supposed to die either. t.r knight asked shonda to get out of his contract. maybe chyler wanted out but doesnt want to dissapoint the fans so shonda’s taking the heat for killing off a character that A LOT of people loved

          • You seriously have to get over it. Grey’s is going to be even better in season 9 i feel. Its a tv show for gods sake. Yes i am invested in it heavily but to go and say you are done with it, its like killing George all over again. The exact same reactions from fans and look what happen there. Fans still stuck with the show.

If you were a true Grey’s fan you would stick with the show regardless of what happens. This is what fans do. In thick and thin they stick with their show regardless of how wrong the death was handled. Truthfully i thought the way Mark got to say goodbye was so heartbreaking and it was done right in those circumstances. If you don’t stick with the show then you truly aint a greys fan. Sorry but thats that.

          • i hope they cancel it too so shonda can learn from her HUGE GIGANTIC mistake. mark and lexie were the only reason i kept watching after they killed off george and after izzie left the show. now lexie’s dead there’s no reason to watch it. grey’s anatomy had great potential for next season, but they have ruined each and every good storyline. alex is with no love in life, cristina and owen’s happiness is completely wasted, jackson and april could have had something special but no shonda had to ruin that too, and meredith just lost her sister which pretty much sucks! there’s nothing worth watching in this show anymore. oh and just to get this out of my system; SHONDA YOU ARE A FREAKING BITCH! there i said it!

Cry about it but if you love grey’s anatomy you will stay a true fan an watch it. I loved george and izzy, but outside of the show they all had a reason for leaving the show and shondra did an excellent way of making them leave with having a memorable ending

I know people have gotten attached and it gives you a way out of your own lives (for an hour). But, to react and call this woman (shonda rhimes) out her name and treat her in this manner is really pathetic. Please get a hobby, write a book, do laundry but please stop taking this season finale overboard. IT IS ONLY A SHOW..ITS NOT EVEN A REALITY SHOW.. The actress who played lexie was paid to do a job. Thats it.. its over. Whom ever descision it was deal with it or not. Hopefully or Not, it will be someone else to take her place and that you will fall in love with them as well. We always do. But, until then sit back and wait for next season..

That said, personally, if it were to me, I would kill Alex right away. He has NEVER been likeable to me throughout 8 seasons and the only moments he did something kind or showed heart he compensated by being a bully, or an idiot, or by doing something questionable. He’s really childish in his disability to do or act like an adult without immediatly being disruptive or mean.
I dislike him, in fact I would even dislike him if I met him in real life.

        • Do you want to the into account that maybe Chyler Leigh ASKED to be let out of her contract? She has four kids and had to take time off earlier this season to be with them and her husband, so obviously the toll of working 16 hour days was having a negative affect on her family.

Why would killing Arizona be better? She’s 1/2 of a very popular couple on the show and to kill her off just to give Sara Ramirez an emotional moment for Emmy consideration is shallow and a poor reason at best. I don’t always agree on Shonda Rhimes decisions for her shows, and would much rather Kepner was the one to go (sorry Sarah Drew, but your character is annoying at best and has garnered very little sympathy from the viewers), but at least her reasons for killing a major character off is better than, “it will give someone else a nice scene to play”. Talk about disrespecting an actor.

          • Last time I checked, shows didn’t revolve around actors and the respect they deserve. If anything, loyalty belongs to the fans and the show itself. It should always be about the show. Rhimes even said herself.. there are certain characters you don’t kill off. Lexie clearly should have been one of those characters. If you haven’t noticed… A LOT of people are upset with Lexie’s death. I agree that Kepner is so annoying and wouldn’t be missed, but in terms of what would make great TV? That would have been Arizona’s death. I like her character, but let’s face it… aside from her recently introduced sick friend and that storyline, she hasn’t really been important to the show.

No “disrespect” to Jessica Capshaw… obviously.

Chyler wanted out and Shonda let her go in a way that was poignant and memorable and had impact. Get over it. If Chyler wanted to stay, Lexie wouldn’t have died.

          • There’s a large group of GA viewers that don’t like the character of Arizona. In my personal opinion her character is too needed and demanding. If, a character needed to be sacrificed it should have been Arizona. I would have loved watching Callie’s reaction to her death. Especially after the speech she gave the residents.
Even though their characters had the car accident last year. As we know one tragedy is not the limit for any of the characters on this show. I’m disappointed that the show selected Lexie. It’s possible the Chyler was ready to leave the show and if that was the case I wished they choose a different means of her exiting. A way that wasn’t as permanent as killing her character off.

Comment by Decipher – May 18, 2012 03:38 AM PDT
          • Yeah, I think the main issue with Lexie’s dead is that, to my mind, there are some characters that should never be killed off. If the actors want out, there are many ways of getting rid of their characters, but killing them off is too much for an invested, passionate audience to handle.

Anyway, my real problem with this particular dead comes from the fact that not only was Lexie one of, if not my only favourite character, but also her story with Mark was obviously still “open” until this episode. I mean, they kept “Slexie” apart for too long. If they knew all along that she was going to die, I would have liked the writers to give them at least some time to be together, and not keep them apart for so long, and then reuniting them in her last living minutes.

I’m thinking about not watching the show anymore (of course, not as a way of “punishing” it and its writers; it IS fictional after all, and they did what they had to do), but because the character that I liked the most, along with my favourite storyline (Slexie), are gone, and I was so invested with it! I don’t know if any other storyline will make me eager to tune in every Thursday. It makes me so sad.

Also, I love Alex he is actually one of my favorite characters. He loves babies and kids and he’s a bad ass. The bad ass part is just a protective cover to keep his emotions in tact so he could get the job done and end up ON TOP. Multidimensional character. I would have really been sad if he died.

These ACTORS have real lives and in those real lives they have responsiblities and activities that may or may not revolve around the show. Don’t any of you remember how it was when TR Knight/ George was leaving the show, and how horrible it was for him and about him and Isaiah Washington back in 2006? Some of you act as if Knight had a choice in between staying and leaving. When the suits decide to write you out, you’re out, there’s no negotiation. If you happen to come down on the wrong side of a political type discussion you’re thru, and that is with anyone in the cast, all they need do is take it to the suits, the wrong opinion goes a long way.

They could have made Lexie’s storyline a bit more intense if they were going to kill her off.

          • Totally agree. The hospital stuff just felt like filler. It felt like any other boring day. It made me so angry that nobody realized something was wrong. Callie was all about getting up on Arizona when she got home (which by the way seemed ridiculous as Arizona JUST (the day before) found out that her best friend or whatever has untreatable cancer and is going to die soonish), wouldn’t she have called to make sure the plane had arrived, that the surgery went fine? That she was feeling ok about her dying best friend? HELLO! I call BS.

          • I agree this finale was horrible. There was a lot of hype and then a big disappointment, even with the character death (which happened early in the episode). After we found out who died the rest of the episode was dreadfully boring. I do not blame the actors, I think it was wonderfully acted, but poorly written. The back and forth between the plane crash and the hospital was just confusing and pointless. Too many stories going on (resident’s dinner, bailey getting engaged, Altman leaving/getting fired, Avery leaving and then the crash). It would have been more entertaining to focus on just one issue THE PLANE CRASH! 6 doctors are traveling to another hospital and never show up at their destination, however noone finds out about it until well after they were suppose to be arriving back home. I know this is fiction but it should be a little believable. I love Shonda Rimes but she and her writing team really missed the mark with this episode. If this episode is a precursor to next season and what the writing has become we are in for a long, painfully disappointing (probably final) season.

It was so disappointing! There is a twist and then there is this. Lexie was one of the most adorable characters on that show and her and Mark’s relationship was one of the things I was looking for. There were other characters to kill off, Kepner, Avery, Arizona… But Lexie? I hope this show gets cancelled. I don’t think there are words enough to describe how disappointed I am right now.

Shonda thanks you for watching for eight years to allow all the good fortune to happen to her, such that if you don’t watch the show now, it really doesn’t matter…she’s set for life. Also, she gets to continue to tell her story for at least another year.

Mark has not gotten over Lexi once for three years so what makes shonda think she will be able to get him to move on so quickly now?? It just isn’t right. I also agree that it wasn’t enough and i had to go back and watch it a second time to realize what was actually happening! I loved the idea of Lexi and mark getting back together (come on, who didn’t…) and I don’t even know if I can watch the show next season! This is like another O.C. Once dent when they tried to kill off Marisa and no one watched the next season do they had to cancel the show… There are just some people that affect the show way to much and can’t leave and she is defiantly one of them. I have been a very loyal fan from season 1 episode #2 (but i eventually seen episode 1), I even stuck by you through the crappy last season but this just takes the cake right here! You kill Lexie?! Seriously??? I absolutely loved her, you pop her up on us, made her grow on us, just to kill her! Man, I was crying in here like she was my dang on sister and you go and kill her! I for one was looking for a Mark/Lexie reunion and you go and kill that for me too! Why not Green Eyes, or even April, come on she didnt even pass her freakin boards! I could care less about those Mercy West people…Yes, I am ranting and raving because as a loyal fan, I am pissed! But, I guess, I will eventually get over it but, this is a hard bullet to bite, almost as hard as you killing off Denny.
But on a good note, Im so happy Bailey finally has a man, I just hope we get to see him since he is going out of town and they are going to have a long distant marriage! Seriously!? I guess overall, I was very disappointed in tonights season finale and very hurt that I am saying that because I always defend Grey’s to the death…But basing my feelings on tonight, I dont know If i will follow you over the hill (yes, i took your line from scandal) to next season! • Hi Jay, I also am feeling ur pain and of the fans also. For those who say Lexie is not a GA’s main character is wrong.. Ur response was well stated. Two years ago on CSI-Vegas when George Edds was in contract dispute and CBS and the finale was upon them, they had him kidnapped by a serial killer and buried in the ground, the main leads on the show had to find him before he suffocated. That whole hour I was glued to the tv. And when he was finally rescued I cried for 3 weeks after the finale. I’m crying now for this mess of this finale,so hurt. Point is a “Poncho” George Edds was not a main character. Gil Grisom, and Katherine were. But he became one.

I’m fairly confident that is exactly what Shonda was trying to achieve with her audience and more. I’d be willing to bet she is happy to achieve it and ecstatic when she achieves it and they turn around and write to her about it. Were I in her position I would be. You are the ideal fan.

        • I couldn’t agree more or written it any better! I too have been watching Grey’s since day one and it is in my top three fav.shows. Well, I will have to reconsider after this finale. There were others that could have been the one to go rather than Lexie; April, Jackson, Ben, Teddy, Arizona or even Callie could go before her. How sad that Mark and Lexie finally reunite during her last few minutes of life and first few minutes of the show. What’s that about Shondra?

I do find it interesting that none of the partners back at Seattle Grace are wondering where their partners are to check on the plane until finally at the end, calls are coming from the opposite direction explaining that they haven’t arrived. And Dr. Hunt’s dinner, since they decided to wait for the others, good luck with that one! What is Shonda up to? Is this finale like the one years ago that Dallas pulled with it all being a dream? I have already ready read many reviews from many long time viewers who, after seeing this episode are done with Grey’s and I just might be one of them as disappointed I am with this finale!

        • I don’t particularly like that Lexie has died either but we also do not know the circumstances that led up to how she has been written off the show. I guess for me, having followed since Season 1 religiously, I would error on behalf of the amazing creativity of the shows creator. Surely the public doesn’t believe that Shonda Rhimes wanted to kill Lexie off. I believe we should not point our fingers and make negative remarks about Ms. Rhimes without being privy to the entire picture.

Killing Arizona would have been equally unsettling. It would have been just as upsetting had almost any of the cast of characters been killed off. I don’t remember any show in my lifetime that has had such developed, loved, anticipated, characters as those that Shonda Rhimes has brought to life. Not to mention the fact that it’s not just ONE character that is most beloved but it’s ALL of them!

Shonda Rhimes thank you for yet another FABULOUS season of Grey’s Anatomy!! I cannot wait to see where the next season takes the Seattle Grace family!

Keep up the amazing work PLEASE for all of our sakes!

        • I so agree with you Em and everyone else here. I really hope that somehow Shonda Rhimes reads all these comments. How lame to have Lexie die, especially in the first ten minutes of the show. And they let the little fire go out? In the woods with all the wood laying around, they couldn’t build a larger fire? Also, you mean to tell me that pilot didn’t have time to say may day? The radar would show where they dropped off. Oh and the flare gun doesn’t work? Yes I know this is t.v., but really? And one more thing, they could have at least have to fight off a bear, cougar, or maybe a wolf. That would have at least hyped it up more. They should have had Lexie close her eyes in the end, leave us hanging is she dead or alive…that would have been a better ending than what we got served up. I’m afraid Shonda missed the mark big time on this one. I think the fans could have written the episode better…Mark and Lexie deserved more.

          • Yeah thats my problem too. Lexie’s death was done ridiculously quick and it seemed as if the writers just wanted to get it out of the way…in shonda’s interview with e news she said she knew for months that chyler was leaving- so why could mark and lexie not have few happy episodes. She also said she did not look at fan reaction and that bassically means she did not care. She is that arrogant. Sorry shonda you had a million other ways to write my favourite character out and you did this? You clearly are not the mastermind I thought you were. You never cared for ML so why are you pretending to be sad about it? Did someone hold agun to your head and tell you you HAD to kill lexie? This is a slap in my face. After season six I stuck my you because I was interested in slexie and how their stories would play out. For you to disregard fans like that is absolutely disgusting. Even if I was not a lexie fan, I can’t say this finale was good. There was no twists or surpriseds. It was rushed and the writing was flat. There was not really any depth apart from mark’s ten second goodby to lexie. You took it too far shonda. I’m DONE.

P.S : You might want to realise you are nothing without your fans. Take the time to look at fan reaction, at least pretend to care.
Your other shows was only renewed for 13 epsodes. You are sinking. GA is next. You are done. Just for future reference: stop killing every character when an actor wants out. It’s getting old.

        • She spoke 10 lines and died? It wasn’t enough for you to grap? Sorry, but newsflash, people die suddenly and tragically. Not to mention that even if she did last more of the hour long episode it’s not like she would be giving any speeches while trapped under a plane engine. She died a tragic, but well done, death.

          • Umm.. okay so now we’re being realistic? The show has now had: many surgeons involved in one plane crash, a hospital shooting, and a bomb explosion… all of which happened to basically the same group of people… the most unrealistic of events and now the way that Lexie died is justified because it’s “realistic”. Give me a break. This is a freaking show and although Chyler may have wanted out, this could have been done a million different ways. It’s called giving the fans closure.

          • Closure will come in the premiere or 2nd episode of s9 i would think and its called a funeral!!! I am really sick of all the negative comments. It happened and thats that. Its how they orchestrated it and i am fine with it now it sunk in.

        • Em I totally agree with you! I wanted to see Mark and Lexie together and finally happy. Such a bad ending to this wonderful character. Mark is heartbroken over Lexie’s loss and it seems he might not survive. Arizona has internal bleeding and might not make it either. Sorry to see Kim Raver going but I think if Christina and Owen are to survive their problems, she had to go. I think Derek may have prolonged problems with his injured had.
No doubt, Grey’s will be very different come next season.
          RIP Lexie.
          A fan from the beginning………..

        • i have also been watching the show forever now, and I ask you, who should have died then?Christina? Mark? Derek? there would have been much more complaining if any one of those had died, more negative impact on the next season. I mean, Lexie was adorable, but there was no talk on her choice of specialization, no talk on her aspirations, no nothing. She was less important than the others, and will make for better plot in the future.
Or…would you rather have an plane crash with no deaths? or have Lexie survive when the impact of that heavy thing falling on her should have had her dead on the spot? The people would have complained even more about how unrealistic it all is. She was still alive when they found her, Mark had time to tell her he loved her, I´m happy we even had the chance to see this, And it allowed for a touching and beautiful performance from Sloan, whom we have rarely seen so vulnerable and panicky. And Arizona;s death… we still don;t klnow if she;ll survive, what, with her coughing blood for hours, she´ll be in danger enough for sara ramirez to put her clothes back on and cry every tears of her body. All in all, the next season will be highly expected.

        • She says it was a joint decision. How do you know it wasn’t and that Lexie was just killed off?

She’s 30-years old and has three young children, ages 8, 5 and 3. Do you know how many hours are required to do an hour-long drama series that has 20-some episodes a year? In seeing some interviews with Chyler, she seemed to have concerns that she didn’t want her children raised by a nanny.

She was great in “Girl’s Club”, ‘That 80s Show” and “The Practice” as well. Whatever she bounces back in, at whatever point in time, we’ll look forward to seeing her and that dazzling smile once again.

        • Killing off Lexie was a giant mistake! I get that life happens and we don’t always get fairy tale endings – but she was one of the best characters on the show (though I thought her storyline was a bit lame this year). I would have preferred the above story line because though I used to love Arizona I think her character’s development has also gone down hill and doesn’t bring to the show whay Lexie does. I know it wasn’t popular on the hit show “Dallas”, but this is one time I would welcome the Season Premier showing it was all just a dream :( Oh well, back to real life.

I think they cried at the table read after laughing so hard that they get to have a job that a 9 year old could do. “you die, then you die then you cry and then you look like u might die”. No significant dialogues, no ah-ah moments that made this show. Just lazy ass writing!

I think if you had to get rid of someone it should have been AZ or April you got rid of Teddy wasn’t that enough? But not Lexie, but maybe you’re going to do the whole “Rescue” ending thing and make it a dream, like Leary did at the end of his show.

        • Wow. No. I’d have been so mad if Arizona died. Her relationship with Callie is phenomenal. Not to mention I love the mentor/mentoree relationship that she has with Alex going on now. To me, she is much more crucial to the show. Lexie was always just kinda there and I never really liked her.

Comment by Mark – May 18, 2012 12:12 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
        • Because Lexie is a boring character and the show doesn’t need yet one more incredible fairytale love story. One thing this show has enough of is fairytale love stories. Honestly, why is this soap opera even set at a hospital when the operations and deaths and sicknesses just interfere with beautiful brilliant doctors hooking up, falling in love, and getting married? Who ever saw so many beautiful and brilliant doctors? My doctors are all overweight and ugly, but on Grey’s Anatomy they are a bunch of supermodels. I don’t think my doctors have had sex in ages, but on Grey’s Anatomy they have great sex every week. There was just an article about overt discrimination against gay doctors, but do Arizona or Callie ever get discriminated against? Oh course not. Do Bailey or Richard ever get discriminated against? Of course not. It’s ludicrous how this show manages to make a high stress, politically volatile, life and death profession all about love and friendship and family and kumbaya and flowers in the sunshine. Enough already with the “I’ll miss Lexie”! I wish more of the romances would die off and the show would address some serious social and political issues.

        • I have also been following since season 1 and by far Lexie was my favorite! I understamd that Shonda and Chyler agreed on this for what ever reason but I am still sad about it (I cried the rest of the show). I agree that Shonda shouldnt take all the blame, but Lexie was awesome! She was the only resident that had photographic memory and still had a lot of life to live. She hadn’t picked a specialty, could have been an amazing Dr and not to mention she finally realized she could never get over Mark and was ready to have a life with him. I am not upset about her leaving because it was a personal decision, but its more of the way she was killed off. Lexie could have had a better exit, maybe leaving the hospital or something other than her dieing. What if Chyler decides that it was a mistake and she wants to come back like Katherine Heigl??? I am still hoping that this was all a dream/nightmare,and see how upset the viewers are and bring her back as the real Lexie and not a ghost.

        • Not *every* fan wanted a Mark and Lexie reunion. I hated them as a couple, they annoyed me to no end. He didn’t have his swagger when he was with her, and he’s all about the swagger. She was always too distracted when with him – which bugged me that she was wasting all that photographic memory talent. Her death was actually foreshadowed earlier in the season. She died in Meredith’s dream, too. Teddy wasn’t IN the dream, so I guess her absence was also foreshadowed in a way, too. The write offs actually followed a pattern – their story lines had winded down and both were making peace and doing what they should – Teddy making up with Owen and Lexie telling Mark how she felt. I thought the show did a good job, actually.

      • In my opinion, Shonda RImes was right on the money when she said “don’t expect to be comforted or happy..” with how the season finale closes; I could not agree more. I was left feeling very discomforted with how the episode concluded, which of course, will bring me back next season. Smart writing. I thought the episode played out fabulously. I was left thinking that not a single one of the characters in the plane crash is out of the dark yet. As for Lexie’s death, albeit sudden, I thought she did a fantastic job acting. I don’t think she needed more lines or air time to draw out her death. She was in a plane crash for crying out loud…it’s a miracle that any of them survived. I thought her tears, even after she passed, were very touching and left me enveloped with my own. Ellen Pompeo provided viewers with a believable reaction to her sister’s death and I felt her cry. I would have liked to have seen more action back in Seattle before the end of the show. I think that Callie may have been very foreshadowing, especially given Arizona was spitting blood. I would have appreciated more urgency at the end.. maybe some frantic dispatch. Oh well, looks like I’m drawn into another season of Grey’s Anatomy.

        • I absolutely agree with you , as devastated as I was to watch Lexie die… The way it happened was right. I mean, it was a plane crash.. And she was stuck under a piece of the plane.. There wasnt going to be a long drawn out death, that was clear. Her few lines with Mark were so painful to watch, and her asking Him to tell Mer that she was a good sister, my gosh I was bawling. We don’t know what’s going to happen to these characters next season, I think Arizona is probably worse than she appears. She was coughing up blood, I don’t think she’s out of the woods yet. I think she will end up dying, and Karev will take over Peds, Christina will probably take over Cardio too. Derek’s hand will need major recoup time, so they MerDer won’t be able to go to Boston.. I, for one am excited for next season… It took some courage to do what she did with this episode.. And I can’t wait to see what Shondra has in store for us next season…

          • I agree with how beautifully Lexie and Mark played their part, short and believable. Plus, Callie talking about how she finally found the most beautiful woman, how happiness has finally come for her…there is some very uncomfortable foreshadowing, if not of Arizona;s death, at least of her internal injuries. It was surprising, different from the other finales, refreshing and full of questionning for the next season. All in all, very good work. O cant wait to see everybody;s reaction when they finally learn the news.

I had been watching Grey’s sporadically for the last couple of seasons but the last couple of episodes have drawn me back in.

What Shonda Rimes did was not only stupid but probably a disaster for the show. Lexie was one of the best characters on the show. It was so good to see that she finally admitted her love for Mark and it looked like they might get back together, which we’ve all been hoping for. If Shonda wanted to cut her payroll some she should have gotten rid of Jackson, since his character is going nowhere, and Owen — I’m so tired of his relationship, or lack thereof, with Cristina, which is going nowhere. Shonda better come up with a dream sequence like they did with Dallas a long time ago — Lexie’s death was just someone’s dream! Please please please, otherwise I’m going to have a hard time watching it next season.

Really that just seems mildly sadistic to me. How can all of you say you loved her character SO much but feel her death should have been played out longer?? Seems a bit hypocritical. “Okay fine, if she’s going to have to die then at least let us all watch her torment of knowing death is coming AND let’s watch her suffer even more.” I am sorry, that is what I “hear” in all the comments about how quick her death came.

If you had a fuselage on top of your body I am pretty sure that there wouldn’t be even a 5 minute teary farewell in reality! Seriously sadistic viewers!!

Really though, Rhimes? After FOUR SEASONS of on/off Mark and Lexie you’d think you’d give at least a PROPER CLOSE FOR THE FANS. PROPER CLOSURE.

I understand Chyler having her personal decisions for leaving the show but this… was not right. TWENTY MINUTES IN AND SHES DEAD? REALLY? REALLY?

Its sad for me to say it but im officially over waiting every thursday for this show. Meredih event ( although he still leves Meredith when he does not get his way, read the POST IT Derek) I so upset that they let Lexie die, ( please Shondra find a pulse and let her live on the show, she belongs to Mark. This was wrong in so many ways. Like letting George go and Izzie,do you have to kill everybody? Bring Denny back with another name and Izzie ( I heard she would like to come back) Burke being gone no big deal. Christina in a weird way fits in with Owen. So Please pay attention to your viewers we need Lexie at least she was made for Mark and I did not like him till he got with Lexie. COME ON ALREADY GIVE US SOMETHING, WE ARE YOUR AUDIENCE LISTEN TO US !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Yeah, it was awful, I mean I know everyone’s contracts weren’t signed yet, but did the cast really need to be stranded in the middle of the forest. And come on someone somewhere would have noticed they were gone and that know one had spoken to them in hours. I was mainly still watching because I thought they were close to getting Slexie back together, because we haven’t had a great Slexie moment in years. And I’m sorry that did not cut it, I can not believe she died so early, that was super annoying and it lowered the stakes for the rest of the episode. After Lexie died it’s like the rest of the hour just dragged tediously along-I can’t believe she died, granted it will affect a lot of characters, but they’ve been though enough. I remember being so happy that Izzie might still be alive when they left that open ended a few seasons back, but after they squandered the resolution of that story line I wish there could be a swap, I mean we sort of know everyone’s coming back, except Lexie (wow what if the other people didn’t end up resigning to the show, and Lexie had already been killed), she was sort of my favorite and her character had gone through so much growth it sort of feels like a waste for her to be written out so quickly-would it have killed us to have gotten to see another hot Slexie moment like a week ago, if Mark and Lexie had actually gotten back together before this happened, I would be a lot happier and more inclined to see him deal with it, instead it feels kind of like a cheep story. But I loved the moment when April found out about Callie being married to George, that was kind of funny, but the rest of the episode sucked.

    • I agree. For all its hype I thought this episode blew. It was nowhere near as good as the shooter finale from a couple of years ago and they kept saying this finale was better. I didn’t feel like it was very cliff hanger-y at all. We all know that they will be rescued eventually. I’m not on the edge of my seat at all and it left me not really excited for the season premier come Sept. Lexie and Mark were my favorite couple next to Mer and Der. I hate that their story ended in such a cheap way.

      • I am absolutely floored that shonda killed lexie off the show. The entire 40 mins after poor lexie died, all I kept thinking was, maybe she won’t really be dead! It’s tv afteral, right? I’m unbelievably disappointed in the decision. She could have just left the show and come back in time for the series finale like ER did. I don’t want reality…I want to escape it which is why I turn the tv on every Thursday night. The fact that Marc and Lexie are over completely disapponts me.

        Shonda screwed up…big time

        • I kept thinking that too. She died so early on I kept thinking, maybe she’s not actually dead and she’ll dramatically let out a breath or something. And then when things went south for Mark, and Arizona wasn’t looking to good, I thought maybe they were really trying to throw the fans for a loop and by the end of the hour we wouldn’t know who was going to die because a few of them would be in contention for not making it. Really disappointed it was Lexie. Always liked her character and was really betting on a real Mark & Lexie reunion. Glad most fans agree and are very disappointed in this death.

          • Seriously? You people obviously cannot be “fans of the show” if you’re willing to stop watching because of the death of one character. Did any of you read the the interview with Shonda Rimes where she said that she had her hands in her Head for days but she did what she had to do? Are any of you taking into account that Chyler Leigh may have wanted out of her contract or had to leave the show? If this is true then having the character just leave Mark would have been far worse. At least with her death we got the great declaration of love from Mark that wonderful declaration of love, played brilliantly by Eric Dane, that we could cherish through the end of the series which could very well be next season. Shonda said the finale would be disturbing, and it was. Seeing the loss of the love of your life is very disturbing especially with the favorite couple. But there are some cliffhangers. Don’t for forget that Arizona is coughing up blood and she’s not telling anybody and no one seems to notice. I found it very disturbing that no one went to her aid except that brief moment when Christina went to try and set the leg. Other than that no one gave her any assistance. If you were a true fan of the show then you’ll be back to watch next season. If you are just a fan of Chyler Leigh then I’m sure there’re plenty of websites that you can visit. Would you rather watch Grey ‘s or some mindless reality show?

Of course, she adds to the main story, bur her role has never been that important. I think April should have been taken off, or Avery, even Owen. Lexie gone makes it just that much sadder and the way she died was painful but a good storyline in the making never the less. Fan till the end! i wont stop watching just because one major character died, though if it was a dream I’d be completely fine with that too.

  • Shows that walk the line between fandom and drama deserve applause. I know the series will take a hit from fans on this one but like Whedon killing off Tara, I think this was a bold, dramatic, and challenging choice that will help to drive the show into next season. Life some times sucks and happily ever after is a pipe dream for some people. It was great episode that had me in tears and I look forward to the show returning in September.

Seriously, I always defend these shows and the over the top incidents that happen too often so it was great to see a character point it out.

        • Which was how she had to write it. The match going out, all of them stuck out there for god-knows how long. Depending on the contracts, it’s possible that any of them could still die. That way there was a reason for any of them not to be on next season if the contracts didn’t work out.

Comment by Alice – May 17, 2012 07:26 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
        • LET IT BE KEPNER. Except the writing appears to have taken all the “yeah, gonna off myself now” out of her character.

    • Difference is: 1) Joss Whedon has truckloads of talent (sorry Shonda) and 2) he offed Tara for a reason: turning Willow into the season’s big bad and make her want to destroy the whole world. So unless Mark goes on a killing spree in S9 because he can’t deal with it, comparing Lexie’s death to Tara’s is pointless.

Anyway I hate Mark so of course I have zero interest in slexie, but I love Lexie and this decision was one of the DUMBEST ever. Along with Arizona and Cristina, Lexie was my favorite. Why didn’t she killed off obnoxious Owen? Or Mark (if it was for the sake of keeping slexie apart… at least let Meredith keep the only blood relative she has left!)? Or even the Chief (I love him but tbh it would’ve made much more sense in terms of affecting everyone)?

Well, I don’t even know how and why I insisted to watch Grey’s, I wanted to quit so badly as soon as S7 started… but idk, I had that tiny little hope that the show could get its mojo back. Guess I finally have nothing keeping me on board any longer (nope, not even Arizona and Cristina who are now barely the characters I fell in love with in the first place).

Thanks for the help Shonda! :)

    • …Whedon is also famous for his questionable writing decisions. Except for Firefly/Serenity (which ITSELF had problems) I have liked nothing of his and thus disagree completely.

Comment by Cass – May 17, 2012 08:37 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
      • Well, maybe you didn’t understand it back then? It happens, you know. Or maybe you did and have poor tastes, who knows. I gather that you didn’t like Dollhouse either, which confirms what I’ve just said. It’s ok… to each their own, yada yada yada.

Btw, I’m genuinely curious: what “questionable writing decisions” is he “famous” for exactly? Because as far as I remember (and I’ve been a whedonverse fan for 15 years), the one who got raked over the coals was Marti Noxon. Now if you’re talking about personal opinions, well yeah, you’ll always find someone who’s not happy with this, who’s upset about that and so on and so forth. Even I wouldv’e liked some things being done differently 10 years ago. You can’t please everybody. The ones still butthurt are simpletons and obviously never understood his mind process to begin with.

Anyway, globally, Joss was never hated or discredited. Actually it’s the opposite and it’s been going on for over a decade now. And if anything, the praise he got recently for The Avengers should be a clue.

Even if he made unpopular choices and was temporarily criticized for it, he’s always been forgiven by the fandom. Besides, he’s nowhere near Shonda Rhimes or other showrunners like Ryan Murphy for example. So yes, please tell me what infamous writer he is because I don’t know what you’re talking about.

Comment by Jane – May 17, 2012 09:31 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
      • Whedon stans = not worth debating. There’s no nuanced discourse to be had there. I agree with your assessment and I think Rhimes is a fabulous writer. She trafficks in a narrative style most ppl here (based on their poor spelling/grammar) are unfamiliar with. Rhimes’ style evokes St. Elsewhere, thirty something and other classic grown up dramas. The reason for killing off a character is to let Stans know the characters are NEVER coming back.

Comment by Poppy – May 18, 2012 05:24 AM PDT  Reply To This Post
        • The silliest thing is that on a soul-deep level, I want to believe there’s a bigger, better reason for picking this character now. I just couldn’t find one. If you can, please let me know? I’ve been plumbing my writer-brain and coming up absolutely empty. The last time a death on a show hit me this hard, it *was* entirely a contract matter, and that’s not right. Contracts shouldn’t dictate storylines like that. The story has to come first, and if the writing skirts the character’s sudden absence, so be it…

    • But that was never the case. Shonda repeatedly said (long before this season) that Lexie was never intended to be the spare Grey if Meredith leaves.

    • I was just going to write that as well. So much for Lexie being ‘the spare Grey’ and therefore safe. I can see how that opens up options for the future though and might get everyone to stay in Seatle, except maybe Teddy.

    • Its because Ellen Pompeo signed a 2 year contract. I knew when I heard it Shonda Rhimes didn’t need to keep Lexie around she could be the one dying. You knew after all the spoilers it was either Callie, Arizona, Teddy, or Lexie in jeopardy and Teddy it was posted that she was getting another job and with everything that just happened to Callie & Arizona you just knew it’d be Lexie.

  • first, with that aside what the fudge was shonda thinking for fudge sake, it shuld of been two hours, and seriously killing her in the first 20mins, like wtf man. i really didnt care for the scenes at the hospital (although i did like the george omalley refferences from callie and christina). all in all good ep but shud of been longer!!

  • I don’t like to use the term “jump the shark” but…that was freaking awful. Will we have to watch Mark fall in love again? Find his “soul mate” now? He already had one…I’m done. Finally. After all of these years of having a love/hate relationship with this damn show, I’m finally breaking up with it.

  • I am so unimpressed with Shonda right now. April is a useless character and quite frankly, I am not a huge fan of Arizona. What the hell was the point of all this back-and-forth with Lexie and Mark to then do THIS?! I’m starting to understand why people have started to drop Grey’s from their viewing schedules. I don’t appreciate her stringing Mark/Lexie shippers along for almost 2 years to then pull a stunt like this. Epic fail.

    • ABSOLUTELY AGREE. Worst finale ever. Why not cut a character like April, Teddy, or even Arizona? She did herself no good with all the rewrites. LET THE WRITERS DO THEIR JOBS, Honey!

  • That was an insult to lexie and sloan fans. here is just a little five minute conversation and then she is dead. This relationship was the only reason I was even STILL watching the show so I am done now. I knew this was going to happen because Shonda whatever her name is said that lexie and Mark fans would get a bittersweet moment…That was not bittersweet that was complete BS!

    • Yeah, it was not bittersweet at all. It was a tragedy and a sadistic move from shonda. Way to disregard fans that stuck by you even if you never let ML have their ending. You are an absolute disgrace. She also said we will have ‘ some satisfaction’- what a bitch I got zero satisfaction.

  • I HATED this Finale. I had a bad feeling Shonda was going to kill off Lexie but it was a DUMB move. Fans (including me) have wanted things to work out with her and Mark for years and to end things like THIS?! No more. I’ve been a loyalist & watched the show since the Pilot. But I am DONE now.

      • I’ve had a love/hate r’ship with Greys for years but the possibility of Mark and Lexie ending up together eventually is what kept me watching week to week for the last couple seasons. The show’s done a good job of transitioning in new characters when others leave but I just didn’t think this was necessary and def didn’t do the storyline justice given how much attention has been devoted to those two for years now. shonda prob just got sick of all the fans wanting them together and answering questions about why she’s kept them apart. I’ve threatened to stop watching it before & have prob gotten wayyy to invested in the characters but I really am done now. the only thing that would bring me back would be if somehow she backtracks b/c of the backlash and has it all be a dream or something in the premiere. but even then I’d be pissed and i don’t see that happening anyway. I’m with you – so glad so many other people agree with us!

    • I am absolutely gutted by what Shonda did. I don’t know if i am going to be able to forgive her for this. Yes i will still watch but i am not happy at all by this. Lexie and Mark were just about to get back together and she gives us this. I should have known that no one on Grey’s can have a happy ending. As for Teddy i am going to miss her too. She has had an up and down year and i must say regardless of what people say she was great. So not happy right now. Pissed off we now have to wait till September to see what happens next and who knows another death might be coming yet.

      • Completely agree! I’ll still watch in September, but I’ve never been madder at the show than I am now. I could even deal with Lexie dying and Teddy leaving if it had been done well. They should have at least had Mark and Lexie together this season as a happy couple if they planned on killing her off. I mean, even if they just decided at the end of the season that that’s what they were going to do, how hard would it have been for Mark to say “I love you too” last week instead of as Lexie is dying? It just felt like a really cheap ending for such a loved character/relationship. And if they knew Teddy was going to leave at the end of the season, why did they kill her husband off at the beginning? I would have felt much better about her leaving if we could pretend she and Henry were going to be happy together somewhere.

  • Wow. Still can’t believe it was Lexie and that it happened so early! That certainly made it more credible, but still, as Ausiello notes–defies episodic convention! (I think this was Shonda’s answer to continual speculation that if Ellen Pompeo left the show, they could always focus on Lexie and stay true to the title.)

Comment by PFitzDC – May 17, 2012 07:06 PM PDT  Reply To This Post
    • Some conventions exist for a reason. If the entire Big Reveal comes in the first twenty minutes, and you are unable to explore the fallout then and there… what is my reason for watching the other tedious forty?

  • Haha peace out whiny little Lexie Grey. As finales go, both this & Private Practice were so darn depressing that I worry for Shonda’s frame of mind. Not to mention both cliffhangers were very cruel. I understand the necessity as much as the next viewer but come on…there has to be a limit.

      • Shonda killing Lexie really! She is such a colorful character and one of the highlight personalities of the show. It was a huge mistake. Resign her Shonda and bring her character back next Fall and make this whole plane wreck just a dream but make it life altering for the characters involved. I agree if anyone died it should have been April’s character she is such a bore. Why does the cliffhangers have to be so morbid????? Make something good of it in the Fall or it may be my last season.

        • Foreshadowing next season, episode one:
-Karev uncharacteristicly leaves Arizona a message thanking her for training him so well
          - Callie gives upbeat speech about all the terrible things that have happened in her life, but look how wonderful it is now; goes home & awaits Arizona in sexy negligee
          - Arizona coughs up blood (twice?) but doesn’t tell anyone gives Mark pep talk for him to stay alive
          - Mark’s alive, Lexie’s dead, Callie & Mark have a baby together
          - one of the hottest couples on tv in an election year is Lesbian
          Arizona gotta die, episode 1

          I’m just sayin’
And will start watching Person of Interest
