Walker Independence may ride again.
Just one day after The CW cancelled the Walker prequel spinoff, Jared Padalecki — who serves as an executive producer on both shows — tells TVLine that efforts are underway to find the Western drama a new home for Season 2.
“We are aggressively looking for a place that Walker Independence can land,” Padalecki says. He describes the show’s axing after just one season as “unfortunate,” but remains hopeful that it will live on at another outlet. “I think cancelled is maybe the most common word used, but I think a better way to look at it is that Walker Independence will not be on The CW next year.”
“I’m so proud of Walker Independence. It’s such a great show. I think it’s a show that’s needed,” Padalecki adds. “We absolutely are thrilled about the show, proud of the show, and we all feel like it belongs somewhere people can see it. We love the cast. We love the writing. We love the setting. We love the storylines that it’s telling. It’s storylines unlike any other ‘Western’ show on TV or streaming right now.”
In a finale interview with TVLine, showrunner Seamus Kevin Fahey also said there is a Plan B to find the show a new home if The CW does not pick up the series for Season 2.
“If The CW isn’t ready to move forward, what are the other options? So naturally, it would lead to that,” Fahey shared. “No one wants it to go away, long story short. We’re going to do what we can to make sure that doesn’t happen.”
“We have a lot of support at [CBS Studios]. Everyone loves the show. We’re all proud of what we did on the show,” Fahey continued.
An origin story set in the late 1800s, Independence followed Abby Walker (Arrow‘s Katherine McNamara), an affluent Bostonian whose husband was murdered before her eyes while on their journey out West. On her quest for revenge, Abby crossed paths with lovable rogue Hoyt Rawlins (Matt Barr, playing an ancestor of his Walker character, also named Hoyt Rawlins). “Abby and Hoyt’s journey takes them to Independence, Texas, where they encounter diverse, eclectic residents running from their own troubled pasts and chasing their dreams,” reads the official synopsis. The resident of Independence “struggle with the changing world around them, while becoming agents of change themselves in a town where nothing is what it seems.”
The cast also included Katie Findlay (How to Get Away With Murder), Greg Hovanessian (Another Life, When Hope Calls), Lawrence Kao (Wu Assassins), Justin Johnson Cortez and Gabriela Quezada.
The show’s Season 1 finale aired on March 2 and concluded with a cliffhanger twist that set up a bigger threat and new mystery for a potential second season. (Get more scoop on the finale and what might still be ahead in our post-mortem interview.)
Walker Independence fans, where do you hope the spinoff lands?
CBS ? you gave Supergirl to CW now get Walker Independance from them
Yeah and it was not the best move even if s2 and3 were pretty good. Afterwards, it completly sucked! Thanks CW! :-(
I don’t think Supergirl would have been any better if it had stayed on CBS. It probably would just have gotten cancelled. CW was the right home. At the very least, it made the epic crossovers possible.
Supergirl went from CBS to the CW because it was a better fit and had a better chance of survival. CBS owned 50% of the CW back then. Production was moved from L.A. to Vancouver.
No live action series on the CW can survive on the big four! The live ratings are way too poor. Walker: Independence would get less than 800k live views!
Exactly. The ratings bar is lower on the CW. So if you get cancelled there, you’re canceled everywhere.
This show is dead and no one wants to accept it.
Paramount plus!
I liked this show. Not many Westerns on TV today, and this one was well paced, with likable characters that could be expounded on. Hope it finds a home!
Could go to Paramount+ since CBS owns that streaming service
That seems like the obvious choice, though then it would have to coexist with the Yellowstone spinoff Westerns. W-Indy is tonally pretty different, but I think it could work.
Agreed.
In fact that’s where I stream it in Australia. It is on Paramount+ here already the day after it airs in the US.
I guess it depends on the economics stack up
Please, please, please let them find a new network for the show!
It’s compelling and the diverse cast is a breath of fresh air on television right now.
All the characters are interesting and they have very intriguing backgrounds.
Oh, Jared, I hope you are able to find a platform for this great show.
Paramount + or even the Hallmark channel.
It’s definitely not right for Hallmark, unless they get rid of all the violence and sex which would make it a pretty different show.
No wonder the producers were silent on the cancelation. I really hope this leads to another network or streamer picking it up! The entire WIndy cast and crew are fabulous and the show deserves to tell even more of Independence’s stories!
Shame Walker Independence has been cancelled, I tried the main show a couple of times but just couldn’t get into it at all but I was hooked on Independence from the 1st episode. I hope it finds a new home as it has great storylines and a fantastic cast 🤞🏻🤞🏻
I was the exact opposite. Loved Walker but just couldn’t get into Independence at all.
Really like the show hope paramount plus picks this show up.
I really dislike westerns, but I really liked this show. I hope someone else picks it up. CW’s loss… as usual.
Someone PLEASE! Pick up Walker Independence! Geez! Yall keep crappy shows and get rid of good ones!!! 😔
I loved the show and I believe if the show had been advertised a bit more, people would have watched it. I will never understand why networks spend money on a new show, only to drop it after one season. I’m 27 and would have loved the opportunity to help grow a show!
I really hope that WIndy ends up on Paramount+. I think it would be a good fit for that streamer.
Fight hard!! This is a GREAT show with a beautiful cast. Long live Walker: Independence!!!!
Love this show. Best story from the old west in a long time. Great storyline and diversity that is subtle and woven into the story as it should. Hope it finds a new home since the new owners of the CW don’t know a great show when it’s right in their face.
Absolutely love Walker Independence. Great ensemble cast. Great acting. Grew up watching westerns. Love westerns. Was so happy to see a western return to TV.
Hopefully another Network will see the value of this amazing series .
“Independence, no truer destination of the American west.”
Please, please, please find a home for Walker Independence. This is one of the best shows I have watched in a very long time. I really hope you find a home for it.
I love this show. I too never got hooked on the original Walker but this show is more of an original. Strong independent women, unheard of in those days, great storylines, wonderful cast. This show deserves another chance !!
So many of my Friends and Family members are saddened by Walker Independence being canceled. Please look what they are leaving on We are are Not a fans of Gothman Knights. Remove it ! Put back Walker Independence. Please .
I don’t understand what the appeal of this show would be to a network. All they ever think of is in terms of money money and wait – more money. Any show from the CW has honestly terrible ratings so I don’t understand why it would be worth the money for another network to acquire the rights to it. Sad, but I don’t see it continuing.
I don’t even see basic cable touching it. The ratings are not there and even basic cable is moving away from scripted shows. Not all of them, but a lot of them.
I agree
I doubt any one will pick it up.
I hope they find it a new home. It was my favorite this season!
Hope they find it
We love Walker Independence, hope it finds a new home!
I hope they can a place for walker independence, it was one of favorites! How about they cancel some sports since you can watch on cbs,ABC, fox,NBC and the sport channel!maybe the fox Channel or paramount channel?
I agree with others suggestion… Paramount + would be a good home for this show :) I love Walker Independence and hope it gets saved!
