The CW is prepping for a potential profusion of girl power.
The network has greenlit three pilots centered on young women, TVLine has learned, including a live-action project based on The Powerpuff Girls cartoon series.
The Powerpuff Girls will follow characters introduced in Craig McCracken’s Cartoon Network series, who are now “disillusioned twentysomethings who resent having lost their childhood to crime fighting,” the official logline reads. “Will they agree to reunite now that the world needs them more than ever?”
Heather Regnier (Veronica Mars, Sleepy Hollow) and Diablo Cody (Juno, The United States of Tara) will write and executive-produce the potential series. Überproducer Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter (Black Lightning) and David Madden (Runaway Bride) also will serve as executive producers.
The CW also ordered Naomi, a series adaptation of Brian Michael Bendis/David F. Walker/Jamal Campbell’s DC comic of the same name. Per the logline: “Naomi follows a teen girl’s journey from her small northwestern town to the heights of the multiverse. When a supernatural event shakes her hometown to the core, Naomi sets out to uncover its origins, and what she discovers will challenge everything we believe about our heroes.”
Naomi hails from Ava DuVernay (Queen Sugar, When They See Us) and Jill Blakenship (Arrow), both of whom will write and executive-produce. Other EPs include Sarah Bremner (Bright, The White Tiger) and Paul Garnes (Queen Sugar, Underground).
The third project greenlit is an as-yet-untitled dramedy about two millennial nuns: one who’s devout and a true believer, and the other who hasn’t yet taken her final vows. They “start as strangers and become sisters on a funny, spirtual journey to understand their own faith and place in the Catholic Church,” the logline reads. The project, from Claire Rothrock and Ryann Weir, names Jennie Snyder Urman (Jane the Virgin) among its executive producers.
In addition, The CW on Tuesday issued a straight-to-series order to a reboot of The 4400. Earlier this month, The CW renewed 12 series for the 2021-22 TV season, including The Flash, Riverdale, Dynasty and the recent Walker reboot launch.

Where is TheCW going to fit all this programing? What shows get stuck with Summer Runs?
I would imagine at the network upfronts they will be announcing a whole bunch of “final seasons”.
For which shows?
If I were to guess I would say Legends of Tomorrow(Season 7), Riverdale(Season 6), Dynasty(Season 5) and In The Dark(Season 4).
I think they’re preparing in case some contracts don’t get renewed with some of the old shows.
Is the Painkiller Black Lightning spin-off dead yet? I feel like absolutely no one was asking for that.
I have to agree. It’s like, I get wanting to do a Black Lightning spinoff, but why Painkiller? They have all the pieces right there to do an awesome Outsiders spin-off and they choose Painkiller?!? His storyline got old over a season ago.
Anissa Pierce/Thunder would have been a better idea for a spinoff. That and they could crossover with Batwoman and have two LGBT heroines kicking bad guy butt.
That backdoor pilot of Painkiller hasn’t even air yet since it’s going be the seventh episode of the current BL season. So of course they’re going to announce if it’s picked up yet.
Jon Hamm for The Professor for POWERPUFF GIRLS?! Would be perfect casting…
Oh, my! You are right, but I don’t think they could afford him. Still, I’ll give the show a try. Sounds fun.
I can’t be the only one who is fearful that this Powerpuff Girls show will turn out like that Winx show on Netflix if greenlit, right?
I wouldn’t worry. Its pretty unlikely that it will be filmed in Ireland.
I suspect many shows will have short seasons, 13 episodes max. Streaming has made 6-10 episode cycles somewhat common, so 13 episodes is like a long season.
Why is the picture from the 2016 reboot rather than the original?
3 White character that will be destroyed by having a black girl in it
OH NO THE SKIN PIGMENTATION IS DIFFERENT IT’S THE END OF THE WORLD AAAIIIEEEEEEE
I love the comic Naomi! I’m so excited and the Power puff girls omg & I love love love the 4400.
We’re getting Powderpuff Girls but not Green Arrow and the Canaries. I feel cheated. I love the Arrowverse and would have liked to have seen how that show fits into it.
My wishlist for that new Powerpuff Girls live-action series:
* Get Tara Strong and E.G. Daily as exec. producers, check.
* Find that Cavadini girl a perfect on-camera acting opportunity, check.
* Craig McCracken (the original series’s creator) on-board as a creative consultant, check.
* Find a new actor for Professor Utonium out of necessity because of Tom Kane suffering a stroke last October, Check. Maybe bring-in Jennifer Hale to reprise Ms. Keane?
