America Ferrera isn’t punching out of Superstore as soon as we thought.
TVLine can exclusively confirm that Ferrera — whose previously announced departure from NBC‘s No. 1 comedy was delayed due to COVID-19 — has signed on to appear in not one, but two Season 6 episodes. As a result, the sitcom’s milestone 100th episode will now double as Ferrera’s swan song.
The news comes as Superstore works to incorporate the ongoing coronavirus pandemic into Amy’s farewell storyline, which began last season when she accepted a corporate gig in California.
“We’re lucky enough to have America back for our first two episodes of the season,” co-showrunners Jonathan Green and Gabe Miller tell TVLine. “There was so much we wanted to explore with COVID and how it changes the world of Cloud 9 that we decided to focus on that in the premiere, with Amy starting her new job remotely while still trying to manage the store.
“The second episode will cover Amy’s last day at Cloud 9, so we can fully give her the sendoff she deserves,” they continue. “It’s also Superstore‘s 100th episode, so we’re excited that America will be celebrating that milestone with us.”
Further elaborating on Season 6’s COVID theme, Green and Miller tell us that the premiere will pick up where last season’s cliffhanger left off, as the virus delays Amy and Jonah’s move to California. “[There will be] time jumps within the episode taking us through the early months of the pandemic, [before we] gradually catch up to where things are now. We’ll show how all of our characters are handling the uncertainty, the panicky and difficult customers, and the new demands of the job.” That includes Glenn and Dina, who “initially enjoy being called ‘heroes,’ but that doesn’t last long.”
Superstore Season 6 premieres Thursday, Oct. 22 (NBC, 8/7c). Scroll down for an exclusive first look at Season 6’s key art, featuring essential workers Jonah, Dina, Garrett, Cheyenne, Mateo, Sandra and Glenn, all masked up and ready to work through the ongoing crisis.

I love this show so much and will miss America’s character. I’m glad she will get to be on the 100th episode.
It would have been blasphemous for her to leave after the 99th episode. Glad she gets to hit that milestone with the rest of the cast and crew.
I’m not looking forward to the solid majority of corona-related storylines that will be popping up, but how these characters handle everything in retail (especially with the types of customers they have to deal with) is something I think would actually be interesting to see. I just hope it doesn’t fully take over the show.
Glad Amy will get to stick around for the 100th episode, too!
TV is an escape, COVID themed seasons is a dumb idea. I will skip all shows that go down this road
Considering these shows are set in our world, it makes sense to have Covid affect this season. Especially since it affects super store employees the most. Not all tv has to be devoid of reality
Unless a show is set in the past, future, alternate reality, or in some fantasy world; I’m going to question how the people are able to get away with things without the problem of COVID so it would pull me right out of the story. Shows that set themselves in the real world have to deal with the complications of the real world or else they shouldn’t bother being set in the real world. Even comedies. I like watching Superstore because I feel like I see glimpses of that happening every time I enter a Walmart. If I don’t see people wearing masks, or aisles getting changed around or markings for 6 feet apart, or arrows for entering and exiting (which we all ignore anyway); I’m not going to have that connection anymore and it will feel completely fake as just the relative general fakeness that comes from watching TV. TV is already being limited this season by production delays. No point in limiting yourself even more by the shows you won’t watch just because they address COVID. Even the ones that won’t address it will have a different look because of it. You can’t escape it completely on TV.
Glad she is staying for two more episodes and will be in the 100th episode.
I can’t wait for this show to air! Glad to see Amy back and get the farewell she deserves. Plus that S6 poster u know they’re ready!
I watch TV to ESCAPE reality…especially TV like Superstore. Was a covid storyline really necessary???
How could they not do it in a retail store set show? And we don’t know everything will be Covid related. It might be mitigated as the season goes on.
I read TVLINE to ESCAPE idiotic comments. Was a crybabying comment really necessary?
It’s like you have never watched the show before? Superstore has always touched on serious topics, it’s a very political and grounded show, yet they have managed to stay lighthearted and an incredible hopeful comedy throught all of the seasons. I don’t understand all the fuss is coming from
where all the fuss is coming from*
For sure. The episode where Amy and Dina both give birth was absolutely brilliant.
I’m not really looking forward to Covid related programming, but I think this is one of the shows that should go there.
And it has been that approach by Superstore to focus on “serious” and politically-charged topics that has made it a much weaker and far less funnier show. The first couple of seasons were outstanding. Ever since, it has become a very preachy show, along the lines of Black-ish. Very disappointing. I still watch because I love Cheyenne, Dina and Garrett but certainly don’t enjoy the show like I once did.
This is basically a show about Walmart. What tf reality are you escaping by watching it? I swear you people just say things to be able to say something. I don’t even think any of you actually feel that way.
Also this show mentions too many current things to ignore COVID. There have been mentions of current politicians, the last election, etc. To ignore COVID in an industry that’s been dominated by it no less would be an even bigger pull out of your precious escapism than addressing it.
That doesn’t bother you but the fact they’re just going to magically have Jonah and Amy break up for no reason because America left doesn’t? 5 seasons of now pointless storylines doesn’t bother you but masks do.
To all those complaining about the COVID theme- we need this! Levity. There isn’t a show out there that can depict our new reality like Superstore is able to do. It’s funny and smart and balanced. We need to laugh at this crazy world we find ourselves in. The drama in real life can be played out on the doctor shows but when can we embrace the other side too? Watch Superstore and find out. I for one cannot wait. This is probably the most important show to watch right now.
I wish they could’ve convinced her to stay around for this season, even on a recurring basis, and make it the final season of the show. As much as I love the show and most of the characters, her relationship with Jonah is the emotional center of the series, and I don’t see how the show survives without that dynamic. Of course, I’m not a creative mastermind, and this kind of change has been successful in the past (Cheers), but idk, I’m just worried that it’ll end with a whimper instead of the bang it deserves.
I love this show. The characters have become almost like family.
I have a rebuttal for all of your “escape from reality” comments”: Given the circumstances of the virus, it’s going to be impossible for us to escape from reality on our favorite TV shows. I wish we had a list of all of the U.S. broadcast TV shows who plan to deal with COVID-19 this year (whether or not it’s a crew/showrunner decision). Have fun dealing with the potential for low ratings.
Honestly of all the shows, this is one I’m actually excited to see tackle COVID. I feel like it’s actually a blessing that they can mine for so much comedy in their setting. Not to mention the show’s proven ability to comment on every day middle class struggles in hilarious ways already. I’m excited!
Its good she will be there for 100, but I kinda think the show should end there.
I wonder who they will cast as Cheyenne’s friend Corona and how Gary and Dina will react when they hear that Corona has entered Cloud 9! Very excited about Superstore Season 6!
Interesting. I’m split on whether covid should be a major storyline. Since its a big box retail store, it would be hard to ignore it like many shows did with 911 after 2001. It just shouldn’t take over the season because when the show goes into syndication or streaming, those shows either won’t get watched or streamed because of the pain associated with the period. Glad America is coming back for a couple of shows to allow for a smooth transition.
I was watching Season three the other day and it was so much more witty than this past season. The whole union thing became a bit of a drag. Hope they can get back to the quirkiness.
Exactly!
Doesn’t Superstore go into syndication after 100 episodes. Will America Ferrara profit from the syndication of Superstore. Plus, will her character still be placed in California because of the fires and riots and COVID-19.
I hate masks in general. They make speaking hard to understand and I don’t think it should be on TV. No one wants to watch a bunch of eyeballs talking to each other relying on subtitles to understand whats being said..
If you hate wearing a mask you’re going to really hate wearing a ventilator
