If Lucifer returns for a sixth season at Netflix, it will do so with its primary creative team in tact.
TVLine has learned exclusively that co-showrunners Ildy Modrovich and Joe Henderson have closed new deals to remain at the helm of the death-defying drama for a potential Season 6. News of the pair’s freshly inked pact paves the way for the series’ official Season 6 renewal at Netflix, although one big obstacle remains: Leading man Tom Ellis does not yet have a deal to return. I’m told negotiations between the actor and Warner Bros. Television continue and all sides are expecting a positive outcome.
As TVLine exclusively reported earlier this month, Netflix is in talks with Warner Bros. to extend the supernatural-tinged procedural’s lifespan beyond the previously announced (and forthcoming) fifth and “final” season.
After airing for three seasons on Fox, Lucifer was “rescued” by Netflix in June 2018, just weeks after its cancellation. At the time, Ellis called the backlash to the cancellation — and subsequent #SaveLucifer campaign — “nothing short of ridiculously overwhelming,” adding, “Since doing Lucifer, I’ve done press in various parts of the world, and I’m fully aware that this show is much more popular than what it had seemed to be on Fox… So I’m not surprised about people being angry. I just wasn’t ready this tsunami of love that came with it.” [pmc_inline_gallery]
The 10-episode fourth season — released on Netflix in May 2019 — found the titular devil dealing with both a pesky priest and the return of his very first girlfriend, Eve. One month later, Netflix announced that it had renewed Lucifer for a concluding fifth season, which is currently in its final weeks of production.
Season 5 will consist of 16 episodes that will air in two separate, eight-episode chunks (premiere date TBD).
Reps for Netflix and Warner Bros. Television declined to comment for this story.
Great news! I just hope that it doesnt result with a bad ending.
That’s what I’m most afraid of. The showrunners initially said they planned a 5 season run and that’s what they got. I love Lucifer, I do, but I want to see it go out on top and not be dragged out past it’s prime.
Actually Ildy and Joe originally planned 6 seasons 3 in which Chloe didn’t know and 3 where she did. So I think the ending on s5 would need to allow for a continuation..
Season 5a was to be season 5, season 5b was to be what they had planned for season 6. I don’t know why Netflix wanted another season now when the show is about finished filming and not last year when they canceled it.
Supernatural had a 5 year plan, the creator left and the show continued for 10 more.
I don’t know about you guys but I am freaking thrilled about another season! these guys are talented writers if they want to continue the story I’m sure they could find amazing ways to do it. I myself have thought of several different new directions to story could go even if they wrapped up the current narratives. I am so freaking thrilled to see what these talented writers have in store for us now!
What about the other characters as Lucifer is not a one man show
Fabulous News! Love Lucifer!!
Good news the showrunners are coming back for Season 6! I’m sure the deal for Tom to return will work out. I can’t wait for the news of the show getting officially renewed for Season 6!
Nooooooooo…. I love the show and I love when a good show ends strong. It’s just going to get lame if it goes much further with the addressed story so far. If anything have him become more like the comic.
Sounded like they had a well planned finale, now it doesn’t at all
Hell no! (No pun intended) this show is amazing and it has amazing writers if they agreed to come back for another season it’s because they think they can continue it in an interesting way. I can think of several ways for the storyline to continue even if they wrapped up the current narratives. I get it you like it when a show ends well then stop watching. personally I like it when a great show goes for as long as it can
Please keep this series running!! I say 10 seasons!!
Love lucifier, so happy it continues to live. I have Netflix only because of lucifer
OMGGGG…so happy to have a season 6 coming..binged watch 4 seasons in 4 days..love this show and love lucifer even
more..and I started rewatching it all again..lucifer forever xoxoxo
I have a question about this situation: what leads Netflix to change its mind and have another season after announcing a final one? The numbers of views of the show increased so much after they made the renewal?
This would say quite a lot about their policy of cancelling or renewing shows after just one moth their release :S
The difference is probably the fact that when Netflix renewed for Season 5 back in June Season 4 had only been out 1 month: Season 4 launched on May 8th. Netflix has since had 9 months of viewing data for the series; with Lucifer ending up being one of Netflix’s most-binged show for 2019. So Not only did Season 5 get an Episode increase since its original renewal notice, due to the viewing numbers, but Netflix clearly see the value in a Season 6 as well.
yeah i thought the same.
If they’d use the same policy for all their shows I guess they wouldn’t keep their cancellation rate so high like they did lately
The rumour was the show was a huge hit but because Netflix doesn’t own the series, WB does, that they canceled it because they didn’t want to invest in a show they would lose the streaming rights to in a few years.
So now Netflix realizes it’s a mega hit and is probably asking WB to have the exclusive streaming right for several more years.
Netflix doesn’t want to pay for the show, just to lose the rights to stream it in a 2-3 years to HBO Max.
Love this. I really hope Tom Ellis makes a deal to continue the show!! It deserves to continue!
I am so delighted at this news! I’ve never, ever, in all my 76 years on this planet, been so thoroughly addicted to a TV show! I’ve binge-watched Lucifer for months and months… I’ve seen each episode so many times I can see them in my head, but cannot stop. Apart from keeping up with real-time news, Lucifer is the ONLY show I watch. There is just something about it that is irresistible; perhaps Lucifer is, well, more than a TV character? Huh? Ya think…? Sigh…
And that is the comment of the day!! My dear, we all feel the same. We have binged watched every episode so many times it an addiction and at the ripe old age of 61, met the man in person. What an absolute thrill it was and what an absolute gentleman he is. Funny, kind, considerate, friendly and a real sweetheart 😈❤
Ooooohhhhhh… be still, my ancient heart! I am soooo envious, but so happy that you shared this. I am not at all surprised that Lucifer is as you described… his talent is incredible, yet he does come across as very, very real (as a human). The actor (Tom Ellis) has a really marvelous future when the Lucifer series finally ends. I hope I’m still around to follow whatever he does. Thanks so very much for your comment. You just made my day!
I just hope that if there is not a sixth season (but I hope there is) they do not leave us hanging like fox did at the end of the third season. Of course five more seasons would be better, I really like this show, Tom Ellis and crew.
Agree with that, yes we want more, more lucifier
I assume we are hearing about this now so that Lucifer has time to film whichever ending to the second series is needed. So if the show ends at 5×16 we’ll get the ending they originally planned. If it’s getting renewed we will probably get a teaser ending for Season 6.
If Tom Ellis is not doing season 6 I will not be watching he is the only reason I watch
I would love to see this show continued for a Season 6 & more. Lucifer & the whole cast are so great together.
Lucifer’s expansion to a 6 th season is fantastic!!
Absolutely love Lucifer! Tom is a multitalented actor! It really makes me happy that the powers to be have decided to keep this show on the air! I have watched it from the beginning and although the show is always been excellent but what Netflix took it over, it is exceptional! They have more freedom for creativity!
Love Lucifer. Way to go Netflix on renewing. Outstanding cast and no one can replace Ellis.
“Lucifer” is the best written, acted and filmed series! Only one other series in my lifetime of 72 years (so far and I’m planning on living a couple more decades at least) has a series captured my attention like “Lucifer”. That was “Star Trek” (the original series). There was no Internet back in the 1960’s to try and rescue it or I’m sure it would have gone on several more season’s.
“Lucifer” is fresh and deserves more than 5 season’s. I’m not saying it has to go on 15 or 20 season’s like some TV series have. I’m just saying the show runners, writers, cast and crew are a great team and deserve more season’s. There is apparently great chemistry between all of them. They all seem to work well together. Netflix jumped the gun by canceling the series before season 4 barely got rolling early last May 2019. Netflix ignored fans and the numbers of world wide viewers. Instead Netflix promoted its own animated series over a very popular series fans were raving about, namely Lucifer, on Twitter and other social media.
Perhaps Netflix finally sat up and took notice of this great series. Maybe they will put their money where their mouth is and promote “Lucifer” this year for various awards since its the fans who pay the money to watch this series. It deserves nominations for various awards for acting, writers, music, producers etc. They are deserving of the recognition for their dedicated hard work as a team. What say you Netflix?
I love the show Lucifer so much. Tom Ellis rocks. I watch every season over n over everyday. He is the man for this show with his extremely handsome looks and he sure can act. My dream is for this show to go to 15 seasons because I absolutely cannot get enough of Tom Ellis that sexy devil xo
Yes, please make this a reality.
I’m so excited this is my favorite show I have my husband watching it with me now also he loves it too!! I can’t wait to see new episodes!! So excited!!!
So, they set it up to basically set up an endgame and renewed it for a final season to reach that point, and now they want to possibly do more and either drag that ending out, or finish that story and then try to make another? It’d be best to do what the original plan was and end it.
I love that the showrunners are up for another season. Thank you for following up on it. I’m hoping for an official announcement soon.
I just finished binge watching all of the seasons for a 3rd time. Love this show. I do hope everyone signs on for many more seasons. I hope the chemistry on screen is the same off screen. Good environment keeps a show going.
It just means they are campaigning for more employment.
Like actors (their publicists & social media people) saying “they are ready to play X character in the a big franchise Y” – it doesn’t mean they are going to get it.
