At the halfway point of Thursday’s Law & Order: SVU/Organized Crime finale crossover, we had an Internet baddie on the lam and no real way of finding him. But how did the big event end? And how much ‘Bensler’ love did the show’s writers cram into the episode? (Spoiler alert: A lot!) Read on for the highlights of Organized Crime‘s Season 3 finale, “With Many Names.” (And make sure to read our recap of the SVU finale that got the night underway, as well.)
The episode starts with a flashback to Shadowërk’s origin story. Six months before the events of the episode, Kyle, the adult son of one of the women who worked in the Ohio escrow office where the site’s server was housed created the crime-for-hire portal. Then he spent a lonely Christmas with a stranger at a diner, came home, and hanged himself. But just as he did so, someone posted Shadowërk’s first job — and the “ding!” that accompanied the post rallied the suicidal young man to save himself.
The feds, Stabler and Benson realize Kyle’s connection to the escrow office and get a warrant to search his mother’s house, even though she swears he’s innocent and that that they don’t live together anymore. They find his suicide note… but not much else.
Meanwhile, Liv and El have lunch at a diner with the feds. Benson has barely had two bites of her macaroni and cheese when a guy wearing a respirator mask gasses the agents standing guard in a car outside the restaurant, then marches in and gasses everyone in the place. Olivia thinks quickly and places a wet napkin over her eyes, but Elliot’s vision is blurred really quickly. The gasser then pulls out a giant gun. Liv stands to shoot at him, but he fires first, knocking both Stabler and Benson to the ground. Stabler, gun pulled, says he can’t see — but Benson can, so she grabs the hand holding his weapon, aims and helps him fire a bullet right into the dude’s forehead.
But Olivia was hit! She tells Stabler that her hip is hurt — and it is bleeding copiously — and that she doesn’t think she can walk. So he picks her up and carries her out like a blind damn boss, with her verbally steering him past the pastry case and out the door.
Bell and Fin question Kyle’s mom while Rollins and Whelan watch. (Side note: You’ve gotta wonder what, exactly, this woman was thinking when she looked at that wispy little side piece of hair and thought, “Yep, THIS is the best look for getting interrogated by a federal task force.”)
Good news: Liv’s hip injury wasn’t as bad as it looked, and an urgent care doctor is able to remove all the pellets. She’ll be sore, and off physical duty for a few weeks, but she’s fine. Elliot, however, looks pretty shaken (and gets all up in Liv’s personal space) as he helps his former partner off the exam table. “I thought I’d lost you,” he says gravely. “I can’t imagine what that must’ve brought up for you,” she replies. There’s a loaded moooooooment between the two of them, and thought it feels like we’re one “I’m sorry, sir, there’s only one room with one bed left in this whole hotel!” away from fanfiction-dom, I’m not mad about it! But then there’s a new lead on Kyle, and Stabler’s gotta run — but not before hugging her one more time.
Everyone, including Reyes but obviously not Olivia, heads to a wooded area to pursue Kyle. And you know as soon as Whelan talks about the train trip he’s got planned across Canada that he’s so dead — and yep, he takes a bullet in the neck when Kyle starts firing on the group. Eventually Bell corners the kid… who runs a sword through himself rather than be taken alive. Stabler knows that they need Kyle alive in order to take the site down, so he yells for a medic. And Jamie selflessly tells the medic helping him to go to Kyle, essentially damning himself to bleed out on the forest floor while Reyes cries in his rapidly darkening vision.
Bell and Stabler ride with Kyle as he’s airlifted to a New York prison hospital. They are irked when he is unrepentant, and horrified when Reyes calls to tell Bell that Whelan is alive, but the bullet severed his spine.
Whelan is, understandably, at an all-time low as he realizes that he can’t move his body, and he can’t even breathe without a device that shocks his muscles into moving. Jet calls and tells him she loves him, but it does little to make him feel better; immediately after she hangs up, Jamie asks Reyes to kill him by turning off the device. Reyes won’t do it. When Whelan’s father arrives at the hospital, Jamie tries, and fails, not to cry. Soon after, it seems very much like Jamie’s dad did what Reyes would not: Whelan flatlines, and a sobbing Reyes calls Jet to deliver the sad news to the team in New York.
When Carisi threatens Kyle with loads of legal trouble for his mother, he acquiesces and pleads guilty, agreeing to shut down the site. And back at the Special Victims Unit, Fin hugs Muncy goodbye as she packs up her desk and leaves the precinct for a new position.
Just before the end of the episode, Stabler swings by Benson’s office to tell her that he’s about to head out on a new case, and he’ll be gone for a while. (Uh, a LONG while.) But he’s got a gift for her before he goes. They make a deal that he can open the Christmas gift from Noah’s half-brother’s family, then she’ll open his gift. The Christmas gift turns out to be a wooden “Live, Laugh, Love” ornament, but as Liv is chuckling, Elliot breaks off the “e” in “Live” so it reads “Liv, Laugh, Love.” He gazes at it fondly. “You can always fix things,” he says. “Now I’ll treasure it.” GUYS.
His gift to her? A golden compass necklace. “Is this supposed to lead me somewhere or to something?” she wonders, though she’s clearly touched. He says it should lead her to happiness, and she says she’ll try. “Me too, partner,” he says with a meaningful look as he heads out the door.
And on that ‘shippy note, I’l leave you. Grade the finale and the season as a whole via the polls below, then hit the comments with your thoughts!
Didn’t care for the constant pandering of Stabler and Benson didn’t care for it back or now. I did care that Whelan died he was fearless hardcore and his bromance with Reyes was one of the things I loved about the season hated the random hook up with Jet but otherwise he was a good character that wasn’t fleshed out. RIP Detective Jamie Whelan.
They hooked up? I didn’t realize. Must have missed that.
They revealed ‘soft sides to each other. That is immediate hookup speak in the L&O world.
Never been a fan of SVU.
Really enjoy Organized Crime.
I want more of Jet and cyber genus.
Didn’t hate it but it would be really great if they could move this along before we are all ready for retirement. With the delay in OCs return, it will be the past part of 10 months before they pick this up. And sweet Lord they better deliver with them getting together then. Long lost return etc etc
What a devastating loss for both OC & SvU with the death of Whelan and the departure of Muncy. I need time to recover from the tragic turn of events.
Wait, when Stabler came by Liv’s office, there was that very brief scene of Muncy packing up her desk, and she said she was going to miss Finn. Where was she going? Did I miss something?
Honestly I missed it too but I guess McGrath offered her a job on a task force of some sort. I do remember a “he noticed that?” scene about her work but I completely missed the offer part.
Just watched that scene. Muncy says he offered her a position on a DEA task force.
She can work with Erin Lindsay.
Whelan was one of my favorites and I am heartbroken. And I personally thought him and Jet were end game. :(
Oops, meant for the second one to go in a different thread. But it’s true. I’ll miss them both but at least Muncy can come back. The Whelan stuff was just so tragic :(
She got an offer on the LA Task Force
Sad about Jamie, poor Bobby and Jet. That was heart wrenching! Good riddance to Muncy, glad to see her go. More Bensler teasing, though I did like that Elliot broke the E off of Live to make it Liv. Interested to see what the next seasons bring, though OC will be a long wait.
I’m so sad about Whelen. Haven’t been this sad about a TV death in a long time. Him and Reyes were so great together. Added great depth to the show.
Every show that I love always kill off my favorite character I’m really sad about Whelen
I am still not over how Organized Crime fridged Kathy Stabler. I will not be happy if Elliot and Olivia end up together.
Is Molly Burnett really going? She had such a strong first episode, and then SVU didn’t really use her.
What is up with the revolving door on OC showrunners? What *is* OC as a show? The Dylan McDermott arc was great melodrama. Now, I watch the show every week and am confused about where tf we are. Dick Wolf wants a self-contained mob episode every week? That seems unrealistic. In the ’80s, Wiseguy did six-episode arcs that worked very well. Structurally, that makes total sense for a mob show. How is it that OC has been on the air for 50+ episodes and they’re still trying to figure out what it is? Maybe they should just junk it and give Meloni another show.
they keep changing showrunners but nobody knows why. I agree, single ep org crime stuff isn’t going to work. the second season was good and so was the last third of so of this season where they did mini arcs. the show found its legs again after that but I’m a little scared of what’s going to happen in the next 13 episodes. (possibly the show’s last)
Yes they confirmed it. Which is a shame Muncy was the closest to a female Stabler had a humbleness to her learned when to own and correct mistakes something Rollins never did in the ten years she was on.
I would give a kidney (iykyk) for El&Liv to finally get together but some good steps were taken here…
I really hope OC can find its footing because it has the potential of being so so good.
I don’t really know why but the acting is 10 times better on OC (I guess it’s the direction?)…not to mention the lighting and cinematography is elite. When OC is at its best it’s a streaming-level show.
Agreed! When this show is good, it’s REALLY good. Wish they could get Chaiken back as writer/showrunner… or even just as a writer. Regardless, OC needs to find its raison d’etre… solve the showrunner problem.
As for Bensler: “In another universe, it will always be you and I.” Time to create that universe. The compass was a lovely start.
The way he picked her up in the diner had me gasping (perhaps inappropriate in retrospect but hey, I’ve been rooting for them for years) and then the hospital scene had me swooning. Great moments for sure, but I also couldn’t help but want something more concrete.
I liked both finales. Liv and Stable either get together or quit dragging it out. It’s obvious they want to. I don’t think it will ruin anything, it might make them stronger. They are forever partners in crime. Hopefully, the writers strike won’t hold these shows from coming back soon.
They killed off Whelan… whatever for? Very sad. He fit nicely in the squad. Wonder if Rollins character returns to the L&O universe it will be here rather than SVU.
That’s interesting re: Rollins. They’ve had her guest on OC a few times, and (although I love them) it would make sense for her to be on a different show than Carisi. But the skill set they’ve been emphasizing for her lately (criminal profiling) doesn’t really fit with OC, does it? If they wanted to go that route with her, it seems like it would make more sense on a squad focused on terrorism (which OC occasionally dabbles in) or hate crimes.
The bastards killed Jamie!
Unpopular opinion…I prefer Benson & Barba
Not as popular as Bensler, but there are plenty fans with that view. They may not be watching or as vocal these days because the Bensler writing seems to be on the wall. I started watching SVU in syndication a few years ago, partially out of curiosity about Bensler. One of the first episodes I saw was the one with Lou Diamond Phillips. I was intrigued by their chemistry but always glad they didn’t have him cheat on his wife. When Barba showed up in later seasons, he became easily one of my favorite characters in the series, and he and Liv have some great moments. When he appeared in the SVU finale last season, it cemented for me that I would really prefer Barson. Maybe I’m just a sucker for underdogs (or Raul Esparza)…probably both.
Olivia Benson has never loved Rafa Barba in that way not the way she loves Elliot Stabler and Barbara knows it. It wouldn’t have worked out between them and the writers knows it. Elliot and Olivia belongs together romantically not any other man or woman but each other.
But does she really love Stabler and want to have a real, present relationship with him?
I know it’s TV, but after 25 years you either get together or you don’t.
I would argue they love their jobs more than any one person. And I know they have kids, but really they are their jobs.
During Stabler’s time on SVU (probably in the season 7-9 range), there was an interview with Meloni and Hargatay about Benson and Stabler getting together. At that time, both actors were against it. They thought their characters had a good platonic relationship and didn’t want to ruin it. Have they changed their minds? If not, it won’t happen.
Yes, they have changed their minds. They both have said publicly that they now want their characters to get together romantically.
They killed off his wife to open the door for that to happen, and have spent the last 3 seasons rebuilding their relationship in a somewhat realistic, albeit slow, way. They had to rebuild after the circumstances of Elliot’s departure in SVU. Olivia was super hurt and upset by his leaving unannounced and ghosting her, and the characters needed to rebuild their friendship, partnership (while not being actual partners) and rebuild trust not only in life or death, but with each other’s hearts.
Last night’s episode got them back to their best friend, partners for life, I trust you in every part of my life status, where they were emotionally before he left SVU.
Now they can realistically get together as a romantic relationship in a healthy manner, not “I don’t trust you and still am hurt you abandoned me, but I’m going to kiss you and jump in with you romantically anyway” bs you see on some dramas.
A TV cop should know not to talk about the great vacation he’s about to go on right before entering a dangerous situation. That’s just as bad as saying you’re a month away from retirement.
Exactly! When he said he had this vacation planned, I had a feeling something bad was going to happen.
Once a TV character gets too happy, you know their fate is sealed.
Hated to see him die, really liked him.
Why do you showrunners always ruin a show by putting leads together Olivia and Elliott should remain friends I’m so glad I’ve stopped watching
Honestly I dislike the idea of the writers killing off Jamie before him and Jet could have a chance to be together as a romantic couple exspecialy after she told him that she loved him. As for those moments with Elliot and Olivia together I love those moments I just wished that Elliot and Olivia had shared a kiss while they were in the hospital or something instead of a hug. Those moments could of been better him carrying Olivia out of the restaurant. Priceless and those gifts exchanged speechless
The Death of Whelan was an unexpected sucker punch for me watching this ep.
I really liked the character
I enjoyed the story arc of the website and bad guy that spanned several weeks.
I do wish for some more resolution of the Benson/Stabler thing
Me trying to be reasonable: Ok, they took drastic steps forward in their relationship… We’re getting there.
Me the hopeless romantic: THAT MAN JUST CARRIED YOU TO SAFETY AFTER YOU WERE SHOT! KISS HIM ALREADY!
That’s all I have to say about the #SVU #OrganizedCrime finale.
I won’t argue with romantic possibilities, but I think the writers were going for a partnership theme. She had to give him directions to the door because he couldn’t see. And it took both of them to shoot the bad guy. If these two are to make it as a couple they really do have to be equal partners. The scripting was a tad obvious, but it worked.
It makes sense that they’re both being cautious after the “bad timing” (!!) scene a few weeks back. But yes, one still wishes for a second or two of steamy!
Geez. Do you really have to kill Jamie Whelan just for a shock value? Jamie could be Elliot 2.0. They should let Elliot mentoring him and his budding friendship with Bobby Reyes is one of the interesting part in OC universe. You made a big mistake EP/writers! 🤬
I totally agree, he was character that was watchable and great foil to Reyes, I hope he turn up in other future shows worthy of his acting.
My favorite part of the season was the arc where Jet went undercover and showed how beautiful and sexy she could be… I really enjoy OC and am sad it is being shuttled off next year…
Is going to be cancelled next year for real or is it just rumours?
I enjoy many of the characters of SVU & OC, but I watch because I want to see Benson & Stabler together. Together in episodes. Showing trust, chemistry, and playfulness, as they work cases. And (hopefully) as they become romantically involved.
I’m rooting for them to get together, before either series ends so we can see them work through a relationship.
Overall, I guess I can buy into the idea that this is progress, albeit slow progress. They’ve gone from saying, “my friend, Olivia” and “my friend, Elliot”, to saying, “partner” and with some acknowledgement of deeper feelings.
Love Bensen & Stabler! Hope Wolfe does right and gets them together, he has done it on every show and this one with other couples. Not enjoying the show as much anymore because of the rotation of characters. Chemistry among cast not the same.
Can the writers stop pandering to loser shippers please? These shows don’t need to cater to the chronically online
Overall, losing a cast member for OC really was weak and unnecessary. The season wasn’t so bad but time to quit this shipping thing for both shows.
I’ve never been so happy for 2 hours of television to be over. It was really hard to watch the horrible rape/kill for hire storyline and then the death and departure of show characters. I like both shows and my reaction was influenced by good acting but, boy, it was hard.
I’m so sad that Jamie was killed off. I liked his character a lot. Other than that, excellent episode and season.
