Good Trouble will find Callie and Mariana once again: Freeform has renewed the Fosters spinoff for Season 3, TVLine has learned. The announcement was made Friday at the Television Critics Association winter press tour in Pasadena, Calif.
The dramedy, led by Maia Mitchell and Cierra Ramirez, is currently in the midst of its second season, which just resumed on Jan. 15. As Season 2 continues, Callie and Mariana’s relationship is in bad shape after Callie’s recent decision to move in with boyfriend Jamie. Meanwhile, Alice (Sherry Cola) balances her love life with stand-up comedy, Davia (Emma Hunton) discovers the education system may be broken and Dennis (Josh Pence) finds a new way to manage his depression, among other developments.
Meanwhile, the December 2019 Christmas special was also an eventful one for the Foster clan. Noah Centineo briefly returned as Jesus, who revealed he’d gotten engaged to high school sweetheart Emma (Amanda Leighton), while Callie and Jamie seemed to inch closer to that milestone themselves.
“We’ll find out. That’s what I’ll say,” executive producer Joanna Johnson told TVLine about Jamie and Callie’s potential engagement. “[Jamie] does have a ring. So it may not be now, but it might be soon. We’ll definitely answer those questions in [Season] 2B.”
Johnson also teased that “we do have someone” from The Fosters lined up to return in Season 2B, adding with a laugh that “I don’t want to tell you who.”
New episodes of Good Trouble air Wednesdays at 10/9c; our Cable Renewal Scorecard has been updated with the show’s Season 3 pickup.
The ratings for this show are terrible, I mean all Freeform shows are bad but this is the worst. How it keeps on getting renewed is beyond me. Compare to what The Fosters used to get, Shadowhunters etc.. Crazy decision.
Shadowhunters also lost it’s co-financier, Netflix, which led to its cancellation
Love that character Jamie is in this show. He was perfect in the last episode of the fosters. He and Callie’s chemistry really expelled the spin off. Excellent writing
This is literally one of the best shows ever. You have to appreciate the depth in the show it’s progressive as hell and give insight to things some might be ignorant on. It’s really special and I need a season 3
Wow…..am I reading correctly? A Freeform show actually got all the way to a third season? It’s a Christmas Miracle….
Freeform got a tax credit for Good Trouble from local government, thats the only reason it keeps getting new seasons. Shame the creators of the show couldn’t try and apply for this to get a season six of The Fosters, they’d all kill for their live viewer ratings now. Hindsight. They picked the worst two characters to base a spin off around imo.
Don’t you have anything nice to say ? You’re rude
Freeform is becoming a parody. This shows second half season 2 premiere on Wednesday got 250,000 viewers. How low do they have to go?
The channel must just be in favor of the Foster’s bc Pll the perfectionists had the same ratings and some higher but got cancelled.
I don’t know what it is about Good Trouble, but I just can’t stay interested. I watch for the times Fosters characters pop up just so I can see how everyone’s doing. And as I actually watch the show, I enjoy it. But I have no motivation to actually keep watching until I know some Fosters characters are going to drop by. I just can’t place my finger what isn’t working for me, though.
it’s so over the top and ridiculous, it’s actually boring.
even now, if they’d bring back the Fosters, with all (or most) of the original characters, I’d watch that. so much better.
except I want original Jesus back–he was the best
Can’t get into the show either and i’ve tried. I loved the Fosters so so much but this just doesn’t have the same feel, I would barely ever miss an episode whereas with this I don’t really bother to catch up if i’ve missed it. The Christmas episode with the fam did bring all the feels though. For me Party of Five is far more in tune with The Fosters, really enjoying that so far.
I agree
When Good Trouble first came out I didn’t expect I’d like it enough to stick around but I like it. Hate reading so many cant get into it.
Agree. Team Matty?
Agree, I love it, Good Trouble keeps you involved and waiting to see what Fosters show up. Bring on season 3.
Agree I love this show. Can’t wait for season 3
People talking about live ratings for shows that are almost entirely dependant on streaming numbers (Disney has made a big push for synergy between Hulu and Freeform over the last year, if you’ve been paying attention).
Now, what are those streaming numbers? No idea, but if The Bold Type keeps getting renewed despite performing significantly worse in live ratings than recently cancelled Freeform shows (like PLL: Perfectionists), you start to understand how important streaming numbers are.
Good Trouble also received a tax break for its filming location. Afaik, Grownish hasn’t, but both shows seem to do well via social media engagement (which *sometimes* translates to good streaming numbers), so these renewals are not surprising.
I find it very hard to believe that Good Trouble was getting better streaming numbers than Cloak & Dagger.
Cloak&dagger ended because Disney has decided to close down the marvel TV division and reunite the two marvel units (TV and movie) under one leadership (the guy who heads the MCU)
Yeah. That’s why I give Freeform a pass for that because it was out of their hands for cancelling Cloak and Dagger. I couldn’t bring myself to blame them like I’ve done in the past for giving up on other great series because in this case it was all because Kevin Feige took over at Marvel and basically said no more Marvel TV if it ain’t connected to the MCU. Freeform still has their issues since they had so many gems on their network in the early 2010s but axed them after season or two when they all were really starting to hit their stride. You’d get lucky if it makes it to a third but even then you can still be nervous that can be its last. I’m not shocked Good Trouble got renewed though. The network barely has anything to air since they got rid of everything so I can see GT having a similar run like The Fosters with five seasons. Its one of the more successful series they’ve aired so them doing right by allowing the full story of its spinoff to be told is probably something that will happen.
wtf are you talking about ? … C&D and Runaways and all the Marvel Netflix shows and Agents of Shield and Agent Carter — ie all the Marvel tv shows are part of/ have always been part of the MCU — it’s all part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe – not just the films
the films / tv shows didn’t contradict each other – the films couldn’t reference the shows because they were written and filmed BEFORE the different tv shows were written/ filmed
and the MAIN reason the shows were cancelled one by one was because there was no other way and once the contract waiting period many/ all of those characters will be seen in the MCU again in future tv shows or upgraded to the films
the biggest problem Marvel had to deal with (the old way) was to have no choice when the shows would air as they had to work around the decisions of the different networks they were working with — now under the MCU umbrella and Feige controlling everything – Marvel will be able to co-ordinate everything from day one and ALL the tv shows can be made like films basically to more easily crossover ALL characters however they want
the tv characters are “done” / dead or anything else – they were all just put on hold
it’s NOT a big deal — sweet lord it’s frustrating seeing people complaining about this
correction: the tv characters are NOT “done” / dead/ or anything else
they are all still very alive and will be seen again
of course Agents of Shield characters are the only ones who’s story is still up in the air as S7 hasn’t aired yet
If thats the case Freeform should go entirely on line. I agree live ratings don’t matter as much as they used to but the still do matter. They have to sell advertisments and which ever way you look at it these ratings are horrible. If you compare this shows figures to its parent show, The Fosters was getting they are worlds apart. At the time they cancelled it it was their highest rated show live and got well over a million in delayed viewing. (No hulu at this point) This was only 18 months ago. However you look at it a large chunk of the original audience don’t watch this spinoff, hence Freeform lost viewers. The social media engagement is awful for this show too. It very rarely trends top ten in the US and never worldwide. This keeps getting renewed because it’s cheap to make because of the tax break. Grownish does much better in the live ratings generally, Party Of Five has started off pretty well too and The Bold Type has the international deal with Amazon on top of hulu.
Well, as you said, it’s largely dependant on streaming deals, which have now essentially replaced advertisement money for these YA shows. CW is an excellent example of this. You look at Dynasty, for example, which garners a 0.1 in LR (on a mainstream network!) and still gets renewed because of its streaming deal. Apparently enough people are watching it online.
They probably will go online only eventually, but clearly the networks aren’t rushing to do so now, so why should we care? I’m glad enough people are watching the shows I enjoy.
As for The Fosters, it lost a massive chunk of its ratings during its original run, likely due to Netflix as well as audience engagement naturally dropping over time. 18 months is a lifetime nowadays given the streaming market. I’m not sure the comparisons between the two shows make sense anymore since we don’t know the streaming numbers.
Yep you’re right The Fosters went down in viewers from their highs in s1 and 2, all shows have steadily been declining. However it was still the highest rated show on the network and was bumped for Good Trouble which is doing terribly, however the try and spin it. The Fosters last eps got a 0.3 in the demo Good Trouble premiere this week 0.09! These figures are important to a network. The Fosters Netflix deal was to stream the whole season after it ended not directly after each episode. The Fosters in the delayed viewing alone would get over a million. Imagine if they had had next day streaming deal on top?! Its true we don’t know what Good Trouble gets via Hulu but there is no chance they are reaching anywhere near the same numbers.
Why did they change the name? I use to watch every episode! I didn’t realize they changed the name! I don’t think I can get into this show! So I won’t even try!
Well this one will get your attention. I’m a 71 year old white male( and married), and this is one of the shows that I really look forward too. Don’t ask me why. I never watched The Fosters, so I had no idea what this is about. But right from the first episode I got into it and was glad to hear that it was extended for a third season. And no, I’m not gay! LOL
We love an open minded straight dude. There’s quite a few of you nowadays. :)
loll are you joking, he’s not open minded–all the promos for this show, (and the show itself) feature 18-22 year old girls in v ery skimpy bikinis, making out with other girls, with guys, talking about their “threesomes” (in the name of being progressive! lmao).
there’s no mystery about why an old straight guy is watching this. and you better believe it’s deliberate on the part of the writers–they want old straight guys watching as well.
the whole progressive liberal thing is such a joke, this show is exactly like every other teen show–sex and boobs, lol
Is that why you look at the show because of who making out with who? I like this show because i is really a good show. I don’t carry about who making out with who, I only care about story line, and the things each character is going through—
And I’m a 71 year old Black man
I love this show <3 thank you FREEFORM. Everyone should be watching this show ! It's so good
I enjoy the show and I’m glad it gets another season. I don’t get all the hate in the comments, but oh well. I like the Bold Type and grownish as well.
Wow, so much complaining from people that apparently aren’t fans of the show about it’s ratings. Most shows on Freeform don’t have more than 500k LIVE viewers so who cares about it’s live ratings. You’re all forgetting that the show has people that DVR the show + watch it on Hulu and on-demand the following day(s) after it airs.
People are such weirdos. Why come to an article of a show that you don’t even watch to complain about it? I like this show, and I’m glad that it was renewed. All the whining people in the comments can stay mad lmao
Good Trouble is good, good, good! Characters and issues are real and writing is spot on. One of my favorite all time series.
I personally love this show. I love that they let Callie and Mariana have their own spot, but still brings the family in for holidays. I’m so sad reading all these terrible comments because I honestly don’t want Freeform to cancel one of my shows again. I think I hold onto Freeform because ABCfamily was my childhood, and I want to hold onto that feeling for as long as I can.
Love Good Trouble. Can’t wait for season 3.
I love Good Trouble. It’s smart and topical with current day issues that need to be discussed. I’m super happy there will be a season 3 and hope for many more.
I don’t understand all the negative comments, I loved the fosters (wish it didn’t end) but I absolutely love this series. Im glad it came back for a 3rd season, I only watch tv shows via Netflix or Hulu. Never live.
Is good trouble season 3 going to be on hulu
i’m thinking bout that too
I love this show, I miss the Fosters and this fills the void. Those that say they don’t like it should just not watch and let those of us that do just enjoy.
Iloveee this show I cant wait for the 3rd season!! please, please pleae,, I think is marvelous the format of back and forworth, etc, love it great desicion!
I am a 66 years old grandmother of 9, great-grandmother of 2 and I love this show. I have binged watched The Foster’s since being stuck at home during this pandemic and I fell in love with the Foster’s and wish you would figure out how to get the Mom’s to relocate and become a larger part of Good Trouble. I cannot wait for season three.
