Holy bubble show cliffhanger: Just hours before its upfront presentation, Fox is leaving the fate of three bubble shows up in the air.
The network early Monday formally renewed 9-1-1: Lone Star, Call Me Kat, Welcome to Flatch, Crime Scene Kitchen and The Masked Singer for the 2022-23 TV season. That leaves three series — the 9-1-1 mothership, The Resident and Duncanville — in Fox’s question-mark column.
The network maintains that “additional series renewals” are forthcoming, and sources confirm that The Resident and 9-1-1 will likely be among them (negotiations are said to be coming down to the wire).
“We’re in good faith negotiations with [studio] 20th,” Fox president Charlie Collier told reporters Monday regarding Resident and 9-1-1. “Based on our long history with that company, we think we’re in pretty good shape.”
[UPDATE: Fox has formally renewed 9-1-1 (story here) and The Resident (story here).]
As reported on Friday, freshman shows Our Kind of People and Pivoting will not be back for Season 2 (joining the previously cancelled The Big Leap).
TVLine’s 2022 Renewal Scorecard has been updated to reflect the latest pickups.
Meanwhile, in a first, Fox did not unveil its official fall schedule on Monday, as the network opted for more of what a source describes as a “portfolio” approach (which is a fancy way of saying the schedule was not quite locked in yet). The network did confirm that its newly-ordered series include missing person procedural Alert and the Michael Chiklis-led crime anthology Accused. (They join the long-delayed country music soap Monarch.)
Among Monday’s renewals, Call Me Kat is averaging just shy of 3 million total weekly viewers and a 0.6 demo rating (with Live+7 playback), down 29 and 33 percent from its freshman numbers. Among the seven comedies Fox has aired this TV season, it ranks No. 1 in audience and third in the demo. Welcome to Flatch, on the other hand, is averaging not quite 1.2 million total weekly viewers and a 0.2 demo rating (with Live+7 playback factored in).
Lone Star is averaging 7.5 mil and a 1.0 this season, down a bit more sharply from its previous averages but still ranking No. 2 in audience among all Fox entertainment programs and third in the demo (behind 9-1-1 and The Masked Singer).
Happy with these announcements. Waiting for more.
I don’t watch main cable or tv, I STREAM my shows w/ commercials. I watch my program’s the next day. I hope you have a way to figure those options in while you’re deciding to keep a show.
If you don’t watch commercials, which is how they make money, how is that viewership valuable to them?
Not being able to FF the ads in streaming services is the one thing that will force me to return to cable. Having to live thru ads is beginning to tick me off.
I’m wondering if the The Resident and 911 delays are just about the financials, or if the storylines have anything to do with it (namely Disney wanting more influence over the shows’ directions). Saw a comment speculating about it and I’m curious. Out of the two I only still watch The Resident regularly so hope it’s renewed!
911 is all about financials with returning cast members and salary, trying to get the episode costs down to compensate. Renewal will happen.
Yeah, bc Angela Bassett ain’t gonna come cheap especially being the only one in the cast that does movies (big budget movies)
It’s about the $$$$$
Wait, they renewed Welcome to Flatch (SPB) but haven’t given the green light to 9-1-1 yet? WTHIGO?
Contract negotiations.
No one in their right mind cancels Angela Bassett…
Well, That’s the truth!!
Well, she:’s only been a regular on 2 tv shows including 9-1-1. So it wouldn’t be her first cancelled show.
She’s been a regular in at least 3 shows. 911, American Horror Story and she was a series regular for the final season of ER
So true DryHeat!
Amen!
Lionsgate did a Sony and offered it cheap enough to Fox. That will probably mean budget cuts for Welcome to the Flatch.
Money, money, money..
Since I have had little knowledge (or interest) on how Duncanville is doing did a quick look-up. Good grief!! Even though it’s early in it’s run it’s got Dead Show Walking vibes for sure.
To clarify—I ‘m referring to early in this Season’s run.
Sure hope they keep 9-1-1 (original) and The Resident. Those 2 are my very favorites. I like Lone Star, but not nearly as well as the Original!!
I agree, Jenny
I’m so glad to see another season of 9-1-1: Lone Star. I hope that there’ll be another season of The Resident.
I’m excited about the Call Me Kat renewal because I’m hoping this means Ken Jennings will be the new permanent host of Jeopardy. Fingers crossed!
Exactly my thoughts!! I don’t mind her in general but I don’t think I would watch Jeopardy daily if she’s the permanent host. Her delivery is a little awkward.
I quit watching Jeopardy! because of the same thing. I also quit watching call me Kat when Swoozie joined. Personally I think Call Me Kat is boring. Leslie Jordan is the only person with energy. Give him his own show, please!!!
So true PJ. Call me Kat is boring. Leslie Jordan rules!
Leslie is awesome in small doses. Too much would be too much.
Mayim is awesome as the Jeopardy host.
Ugh! No one could be less worthy than Ken Jennings.
The Resident and 911 are 2 of my favorite shows. I will be upset if they are not renewed. I don’t watch 911 Lone Star or that piece of garbage the very unfunny and stupid Call Me Kat.
I’m with you. They need to renew 911 & The Resident. I can’t believe they renewed that waste of time Kat show instead of 2 riveting dramas. I tried watching Call Me Kat when it first came out & I couldn’t stand it anymore. The talking back to the camera may work in British comedy but not here so much. Bring back the real entertainment & take the Kat back out to the litter box.
If you don’t watch Call Me Kat, how do you know it’s stupid and unfunny? I like the show and I’m glad it’s renewed.
Am I the only person super excited that they renewed Crime Scene Kitchen? I initially watched it because I love Joel McHale, but found myself genuinely finding the show itself completely delightful!
I’m pretty excited about it too, I love cooking shows anyway but with Joel McHale, it was even better and you’re right, it was such a fun show to watch.
I LOVE Crime Scene Kitchen! I love the concept and I’m so happy it was renewed.
I am. Very pleasant surprise. Since I’ve heard nothing about it since the end of season 1 I assumed it was quietly cancelled. Very glad to see it’s coming back
I agree with you. I really enjoyed Crime Scene Kitchen!!! I’m very excited they’re bringing it back…
I’m totally stoked — I love that show!
Somewhat surprised about Call Me Kat. Was prepared to delete it from the DVR. I like the cast, but not a fan of the over-the-top acting choices.
The supporting cast is what makes Call Me Kat a show worth watching. Phil, Randy, Carter, Max … they are all great characters and very funny.
So, they were really commited to renewing a low-rated comedy. I’m a little bummed that it wasn’t Pivoting, but mainly because I love all three leading ladies.
I do hope the renewals of 9-1-1 and The Resident comes soon. I don’t think any of those shows’ season finales is gonna work as a de facto series finale, considering they perform well enough to continue for another year rating-wise.
Deadline says Pivoting being renewed was contingent on production moving from Los Angeles to Vancouver as a cost cutting measure but the stars didn’t want to move their families.
I read that article and I remembered an interview Maggie Q did some months ago where she said what was exciting about this new show for her was that it was a comedy, but especially that it was being filmed in Los Angeles, so it made sense that it wasn’t going to work for her (or any of her co-stars) if they had to move to Vancouver.
Allow me to point something out which I hope does not come across as Church-ladyish. Both Pivoting and United states of Al are victims of horrible writing. Both comedies gave us leads we were supposed to be being selfishly involved in cheating. With Pivoting, while I have always been a Ginnifer Goodwin fan i did not want to see he cheating on her nice guy husband It was supposed to be a comedy. And on US of AL, the separated wife is living with her new nice guy boyfriend who is talking marriage. It is hard to get behind her or her estranged husband treating the man like dirt by sneaking off to a hotel repeatedly to screw each other. This type of activity may be okay for a drama, but it’s not what I want to see in a comedy. Hopefully writers will learn this kind of plot twist in a comedy ends in a series pink slip.
I haven’t watched United States of Al, but I agree about the writing in Pivoting. The pilot was funny-ish and the three actresses were very good and had great chemistry, but the writing was pretty bad. I didn’t know what to expect when Ginnifer Goodwin’s character fell for her trainer and I didn’t think she would eventually end up cheating on her husband, even though I disagree with you about the guy, because he was kinda awful to her and only in the end, he realized he wanted to do something about their marriage. I have yet to watch a comedy show handling infidelity in a “right-yet-funny” way, but Pivoting certainly didn’t.
Could it be……SATAN?!?!
.
I don’t know, on Al, if they’re not yet divorced…should he really be living with a married woman? He’s taking his chances.
Why did they cancel Our Kind of People, Pivoting and also The Big Leap? They were great shows!!
They don’t keep Shows around long enough for them to be successful. Hope they will get picked up by another network!!
Hopefully they don’t cancel the Resident!
The Big Leap was one of my favorite shows of the season…I couldn’t wait to see it each week!!! I can’t believe they already cancelled it!!! Networks do that to us all the time…It makes me not even ever want to watch any new shows, cause when u get invested in them, they just get CANCELLED! I never did get over them cancelling Alcatraz!!! That was a great drama that was totally unique, just like the Big Leap…So many of the other shows out there are the same old things done over & over…
They need to change the writers for 911 and Lone Star! The storylines are getting ridiculous and boring. Bring some new faces and make it fresh again!
I guess ‘The Cleaning Lady’ will be a midseason release. And they should have given ‘Pivoting’ a probationary second season.
Duncanville is Fox’s funniest animated show right now, so I really hope it gets picked up. Time to put Family Guy and Bob’s Burgers out to pasture.
Omg I knew kat would come back. Awesome
Probably a final one but it will have a good run
So happy for Crime Scene Kitchen and Welcome to Flatch!!
I am so happy about Welcome to Flatch since I did not think that the show had a chance of coming back. Everyone needs to try to give this show a chance. There are too many characters on the show that are beyond funny. The show deserves another chance.
I caught up with it on Hulu and enjoyed it, it might get an audience through streaming. Also it cannot cost a lot to produce which certainly helps.
Definitely. It’s so good. Needs more time to grow an audience. I never miss it via streaming.
I can believe they renewed Call Me Kat, it really is very unfunny, all the jokes are predictable and the acting (specially Miayim Bialik) are not what they should be, because a lot of them are actually good actors.
I am a very obssesive person so i can leave a show at the middle. but i was looking forward to forgetting this show ever existed
If they renew the stupid Kat show and cancel 911 then someone at the Fox network needs their head examined.
Wow, no 911 renewal but Flatch lives to see season 2? Bonkers. I watched the first 2 episodes and couldn’t stand Flatch. Hated the way all its promos had the audacity to compare it to Parks and Rec and the Office, 2 shows that were so superior it’s ridiculous.
Come on FOX be smarter than CBS. Renew 911 and the Resident please!
Welcome to Flatch? I’ve been watching the show this season, but really?
The Flatch renewal was even more shocking than NBC again renewing Blacklist.
I only watch the 911 shows, Call Me Kat and the Cleaning Lady on Fox. 911 is certain to be renewed after contract negotiations are done. So I am quite pleased.
… and Fantasy Island!
