While there’s little chance CBS will pull another S.W.A.T. and un-cancel East New York, all hope is not lost for the axed procedural.
TVLine has confirmed that efforts are underway at Warner Bros. Television to find the freshman police drama a new home in the wake of its cancellation at CBS. Monday’s axing of East New York and fellow rookie hour-long series True Lies came just hours after the Eye Network reversed its decision to cancel S.W.A.T.
A spokesperson for Warner Bros. Television declined to comment for this story.
For his part, East New York co-creator Mike Flynn appears to be holding out hope for a second season, telling fans on Instagram, “East New York’s spirit is as strong and mighty as the people who live there. Our journey doesn’t have to end here. Stay tuned, folks.”
East New York starred Amanda Warren as Deputy Inspector Regina Haywood, who ran a police station in the working-class Brooklyn neighborhood. The newly promoted Haywood faced resistance from veteran officers and detectives who didn’t like the changes she was trying to make. Jimmy Smits co-starred as Haywood’s mentor John Suarez. Ruben Santiago-Hudson, Kevin Rankin, Richard Kind, Elizabeth Rodriguez, Lavel Schley and Olivia Luccardi led the supporting cast.
As a result of the show’s demise at CBS, East New York‘s season finale, airing this Sunday at 9/8c, is now being billed as a series finale.
I truly hope so! It’s a great show with great streaming numbers along with the live.
I hope so! I think OWN would be a great place for it, especially if it pairs with All Rise (whenever that returns for it’s back half).
Hopefully not OWN because then we wouldn’t get it in Canada. I have OWN and it doesn’t air All Rise here.
You know it can still be picked up on another network, right? It really doesn’t have to be OWN.
I think FOX could be an option. They just lost 9-1-1, and they recently ordered a surf rescue drama to co-produce with Warner Bros. It might come down to what FOX is asking for in terms of streaming rights. Otherwise, though OWN did save All Rise and though TNT did once save Southland, it seems like a lot of cable is getting away from scripted. OWN might be an exception but I feel like streaming is probably a more likely option.
J I think the challenge with that is that Fox is looking for programming that they own. It seems to be a part of their model now look to see 911 Lone Star move to ABC next year.
I hope not FOX; we have The DISH & they are currently & constantly in a battle. We weren’t even able to see the SuperBowl this year because of FOX’S intractable stance!
Own is cancelling All Rise. They will return for the fall but that’s it. I don’t want it to go to own. I had other shows I liked on there that they cancelled. I rather it go to ABC, NBC, or a streamer. Maybe Max since it’s a Warner show.
All Rise and East New York were created and produced by William Finkelstein and produced by WB. Coincidence??
East New York is the best cop show in a long time. It covered a lot of nationalities and daily events that most shows don’t. Society learns by showing positive outcomes. I am tired of seeing and reading only mean hateful and disrespectful individuals in life and on television. Please keep and renew East New York.
PUT EAST NEW YORK BACK ONE!!!!!!
NBC or ABC not Fox. They do not deserve a quality show like East New York.
I totally agree.. East New York is too high quality and class compare to any show that Fox has..NBC would be smart to pick it up..
I totally agree with you and was thinking the same thing!
I loved OWN & was glad it picked up All Rise. Then, Spectrum dropped that channel from its Select plan, just after I renewed my bundle last year. I was so angry as All Rise was a favorite program. I know everyone can’t be pleased, but I hope NBC or ABC gets it. If it goes to streaming, I hope Paramount Plus gets it since it’s been a CBS show. I can’t afford to keep subscribing to all the different streaming services.
All Rose streams on Hulu
Really hope this show finds a new home. For me, it had a slow start, but I have really found it to be a well written and acted drama.
Same here, the show grew on me. I really hope another network picks it up. I enjoy watching the show.
I am GLAD THAT EAST NEW YORK MAY GO TO ANOTHER STATION. I LOVE THIS SHOW AND HATE TO SEE IT END. IS CBS TRYING TO LOOSE FANS ?BECAUSE FIRST SWAT THEN EAST NEW YORK? I like both these shows and where they go I go. They are messing up good programs by ending them too soon.
They better tighten up.
I agree. And the bad thing is they get you all excited about the show in the first place then they cancel it. What’s the purpose of bringing in a new show and not even giving it a chance. But CBS has cancelled a few of my shows so it doesn’t surprise me. The only show I have left is Equalizer. We’ll see how long that last.
I’m with you on this. CBS seems to have cornered the market on cancellations. I really liked East New York. It has a solid cast that has the potential to go anywhere they want with storylines. They really screwed the pooch on this one.
No, Fox far and away has absolute dominance in cancelling shows people love.
I was going to say NBC. I thought they cornered the market on cancelling good shows. LOL
I’m still bitter about The Brave and Timeless.
Great show, Please don’t let this one fall thru the cracks!!!! Great Cast, Great stories!
Great news, so glad to hear of this!!
I certainly hope so. It is too good to not continue somewhere.
Fingers crossed that Netflix will pick it up as it has other shows cancelled by network tv.
Definitely love this show and applaud all efforts to find a new home!!
This is such a fantastic show anchored by a talented cast. Really hope this finds a new home.
I think it would do well at ABC to replace Million Little Things
That’s actually a great idea! It always felt like it wasn’t a perfect fit at CBS. ABC would definitely know how to market it too.
Amen. It has that Botchco/NYPD Blue visual vibe (not just because of Jimmy Smits, but because of the authentic “establishing shots” montages). CBS is too focused on lead-star-centric hourlong dramas/dramedies: Marcia Gay Harden, Shemar Moore, Queen Latifah, Tom Selleck–all of whom except Latifah starred in previous CBS shows; and except for Blue Bloods gave up on creating & nurturing ensemble cast chemistry.
The only reason I still watch Blue Bloods is the characters in the ensemble cast. Selleck’s right-wing ideologicsl fingerprints are all over the plot: any characters who oppose his political view are painted as naive one-dimensional fools for him to conquer by episode’s end. (I’ve even grown to root against him–no mean feat for a show’s star). EastNY, OTOH, doesn’t take sides, much less preach one way or the other–and the dynamic between Killian’s & Morales’ characters reminds me of the give-&-take between Sipowicz and Simone back in the day.
Whoops, that’s “Bochco,” no “t.” I hate Autocomplete–it’s my worst enema…
Good show. Hope they find a home elsewhere.
It definitely deserves life on another network, the show is excellent! Fingers crossed it gets picked up by a network/streamer that recognizes it’s value and believes in good drama. The writing, the acting, the city, they haven’t missed a step!
I agree.
A great diversified cast and especially enjoyed Richard Kind in a more dramatic role. Hope somebody picks it up.
Yes! Go for it!! Magnum P.I. jumped networks and continues.
I really hope East New York gets picked up somewhere. I love this show, much more than SWAT. There shouldn’t have been an either/or. Please UNCANCEL THIS SHOW!
If only Warner Brothers had a streaming platform they were trying to attract subscribers to.
CBS has no idea what they are doing canceling east NY and true lies are two great shows.
I watched several episodes and thought it was really good. Seems like it would be a better fit for cable or streaming so they can be more realistic in its depiction.
I really didn’t want to like this show. Thought it was going to be another touchy-feely cop show. But I watched the first episode and I was hooked. I hope it gets picked up somewhere else.
Great show. Disappointed it was canceled. Let’s hope another station takes it over.
This is great news, Yaay!
I didn’t mention this in the prior newstory about ENY, but one reason why I like this show so much, is that for me, it brings back very fond memories of both Hill Street Blues and NYPD Blue. All 3 of them well written, well acted, and including contemporary issues. 👍
I LOVE “EAST NEW YORK” !! KEEP IT WHEREVER YOU CAN !!!
I really enjoy this show. I think part of the problem has been it’s time slot. Sunday night sports run late, so it often is not on at the hour it is supposed to be seen. This has been a big problem. I have often DVR’d it only to find that I had the wrong show on my DVR. Put it on another night and see how successful it will be. It’s a really good show, with a great cast. Give it a chance! CBS killed it’s own show.
CBS is not going to give up sports with overruns but I do wish they would implement a Plan B when this happens. The Good Wife and Madam Secretary suffered too. I do not like waiting 30-40 minutes for my 9 or 10 PM shows to start either. I do not recall so many sports overruns in past years. I swear sometimes they are planned in advance!
I like East New York. Well written and acted. The sports overruns on CBS are very annoying.
On the usual sports nights, such as Sunday, I schedule my shows to end at least two hours after the scheduled ending time. I do this on Fox, CBS, and NBC.
I do the same thing. You would think with the million or so sports channels there are, they could keep the sports off of ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox, etc. and put them on only their channels.
Yes, Please!!!!
Yes this would be definitely beneficial for ENY!
It needs a new network to continue!
