ABC made it a baker’s dozen on Thursday, handing out renewals to 13 series including bubble shows Stumptown, The Rookie and mixed-ish.
Also scoring additional-season green lights are comedies black-ish, The Conners, American Housewife and The Goldbergs, as well as Thursday-night drama A Million Little Things and unscripted series The Bachelor, Dancing with the Stars, Shark Tank and 20/20. The new Jimmy Kimmel-hosted reboot of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire will also be back for another season.
Those series join previously announced renewals for America’s Funniest Home Videos, American Idol, The Bachelorette, The Good Doctor, Grey’s Anatomy and Station 19.
On the cancellation front, ABC confirms that Single Parents, Schooled, Emergence, Bless This Mess and the Tiffany Haddish-led reboot of Kids Say the Darndest Things have ended their respective runs (more on those axings here). The fates of new dramas For Life and The Baker and the Beauty will be determined at a later date (a list of remaining broadcast bubble shows can be found here).
Among new series, ABC has picked up the Kyra Sedgwick-fronted empty nester sitcom Call Your Mother (fka My Village). The network previously ordered David E. Kelley’s procedural thriller Big Sky to series. Additional pilot/series orders will be made in the coming weeks.
Out of the 10 dramas that aired on ABC this TV season, The Rookie ranked No. 4 (behind the already renewed Station 19, Grey’s Anatomy and The Good Doctor). A Million Little Things and Stumptown followed, in fifth and sixth place.
Out of ABC’s 10 sitcoms this TV season, The Conners ranked No. 1 in the demo, while The Goldbergs was third (behind Modern Family’s farewell run). American Housewife, mixed-ish and black-ish placed fifth, seventh and eighth, respectively.
TVLine’s 2020 Renewal Scorecard has been updated to reflect ABC’s pickups and cancellations.
Hooray, The Rookie and Stumptown!!!!
Yes! Thankful that both were renewed, too. Looking forward to seeing what happens in new seasons for both shows.
BTW, love your username. Torchwood was great. The full-cast audio drama episodes are cool too.
I wished that ABC would have given the Grand Hotel a chance, I liked that show then you come of with the Baker and the Beauty, not good at all.
Yes! These were the two I was most pulling for.
I really liked Schooled.
Hell yes for the “Stumptown” renewal!
I second that. Typical when I like a bubble show it gets cancelled (way too many to count). Hopefully ABC will move it to a better time slot next year, dare I hope for the 10pm Thursday slot. Surprised that American Housewife was renewed. It started off pretty good, but the writing has gotten worse each season.
Single Parents hurts. It was really cute and quirky. I need more of that.
I agree! I also liked Bless This Mess. Season 2 of it was better than season 1.
I loved Single Parents and I really loved Bless This Mess. Super bummed!
Yeah me too such great shows, hopefully another network would pick up both shows .
One hundred percent agree!!! Two of my favorite show. This sucks something I can’t say here. I’m beyond ticked. The Connors gets renewed?? What a joke.
As stated in the article, The Connors does better in the ratings, so of course it got renewed. Thats kinda how tv works.
Season 2 was better.I still wish they had kept The Kids Are Alright
I barely made it through the first episode.
Of BTM…
Bless This Mess was OK. They’d have a few good episodes then have a few cringe worthy ones. And the addition of a baby wouldn’t have worked in its favor. At least now Ed Begley Jr. can appear on Young Sheldon full time now that he’s going to college.
I so agree on this one. I loved that show!
We never got to see will and Angie get together!
Single Parents and Bless This Mess definitely hurt. I adored both of those shows. Between their cancellation and Modern Family ending, I feel like I’m running low on good sitcoms to watch. I’m glad mixed-ish scored a renewal.
Only ABC’s comedy left for me to watch is Mixed-ish. İ lost Bless This Mess and Single Parents. İ have only a few comedy shows left for me. Like CBS’s Mom, The Unicorn; FOX’s The Simpsons; NBC’s Superstore and Brooklyn Nine Nine.
It seems like networks don’t like feel good tv anymore and while I do recognize that those shows don’t perform as well as their dramas there is still a market and a need for those types of shows. It’s sad because I really enjoyed Single Parents and Bless This Mess. Glad that at least Mixed-ish and Black-ish were renewed.
So true. I really enjoyed Single Parents and I’m not a parent. I also enjoyed Emergence. The cast was great on that series. I enjoyed the first season of A Million little things but the second season was such a bummer. It was soooooooo depressing and boring; I had to take a break in the middle of the season and come back later just to keep my sanity. I won’t be signing in to any new ABC sitcoms this fall until it’s been on for 3 or more seasons. No need to get attached to anything that will be canceled right away.
Me too
It breaks my heart. I won’t lie I would’ve preferred Single Parents stayed on rather than Mixed-ish.
We watched Single Parents but we were talking about it kind of being a filler show. Oh well, I like the actors but the kids were just a little too much.
I wish NBC would hurt the hell up and RENEW Zoey
I am waiting to hear about Manifest.
Manifest seems to be a pretty safe bet in this time of low-risk programming.
Yes, NBC really needs to give Zoe’s Extraordinary Playlist another season. Was it perfect? No But Very close. The networks need to reward the Zoe team for their originality .& the yeomans job it must take to pull it off. The season built up To the finale which was just beautifully done. I want more. What a pleasant surprise
YAY for Stumptown! Such a great cast and show! Been really hoping they would bring it back!
Today is a great day! YAY twice!!!
Boo for Schooled and Single Parents!
Those were my two I wanted renewed also. single Parents was better this year imo. Mamifest would wipe out all my shows. God Friended Me and Modern Family were the other shows I watched
Can’t believe that awful Who Wants To Be A Millionaire is coming back, it really stunk. I’m so sick of game shows and reality shows. I’m watching more and more Netflix.
So so sad about those two. They were at the top of my list to watch when they showed up in my queue. I think I’ll miss Schooled the most. I loved the characters, and having gone to high school/been a young adult in the ’90s, I just really enjoyed all of the references and episode themes.
Such a terrible way to end Single Parents. I wantedDouglas and Poppy to work it out and Angie and Will to admit their feelings and at least try the couple thing. Schooled is upsetting but I think the ending works well enough because those that want her with CP get that and those that want her with Barry still have hope because they broke up “at least for now”. Plus We will probably get an update on all characters during The Goldbergs run. I imagine the finale will give a glimpse into each person’s future so there is still hope for closure on that one.
also. Renew BATB
I really liked the first few episodes, but now the family is falling apart, all because of Noa and the anguish she has brought with her. Daniel acts like a puppy dog. Vanessa is mean. The daughter and the other brother are best characters on the show.
I’ll miss Single Parents and Bless This Mess most among the comedies, Emergence the most missed drama. I knew from episode one it was a longshot to get renewed. I’ll probably never take a chance on a show like that again, they never get renewed.
Very glad (and pleasantly surprised) for Stumptown! I’m happy that AMLT is coming back as well, even if I kinda hate-watch when it comes to the awful Delilah. Love me some Gary though.
Ha! I only liked Delilah with Eddie. Which says how much I like Eddie. :)
.
So happy about Stumptown! They tried so hard to kill it, yet here it is. Too bad they succeeded in killing Single Parents.
So they cancel bless this mess and renew mixedish which is terrible abc u suck
I’m sad about Bless This Mess. I love that show.
They made the right decision. You can be unhappy about one show without trashing another. Bless this mess was unwatchable. See?
Unwatchable?? Apparently anything that is remotely smart and witty is too advanced to keep on the air lol. Has to be simple one liners to keep people entertained. So lame.
you think Bless this mess is “smart and witty” ??? seriously ???
The West Wing was smart …. The Good Place is smart … the Good Fight is smart
The Good Place is witty … 30 Rock was witty … Parks & Rec was witty
Bless This Mess is (was) not smart or witty in ANY way whatsoever
just a suggestion – please expand your viewing and watch the above shows
..

..
and TREAT YO SELF !
Happy Stumptown got renewed! Thank you ABC!
Yes for the Rookie and Stumptown Nice besides DWTS only show watch on ABC sorry to say But Good for those 2 shows
Yay! To Mixed-ish being renewed.
Odd they would cancel 3 comedies doing better than 3 they kept.
The Conners renewal is a relief, I had a feeling it might end despite Sara Gilbert’s commitment to it last year.
I’m glad too. Being the network’s #1 sitcom did help a bit.
Why cancel Connors? Whats up with Sara’s commitment?
Yeah, I was confused by Sam Junk’s comment too. As ABC’s #1 comedy, the Conners was a shoo-in for renewal. It stayed + 1 in the ratings almost the entire season. Not sure what he meant about Sara Gilbert’s commitment to the show. As an EP and lead actress, the Conners has been her priority show since the pilot. She doesn’t have any other major projects right now as far as I know.
My reasoning wasn’t just ratings-based although I remember a time before fragmentation when 6 mil would get you dropped by November sweeps. My commitment comment was just that, I worried John Goodman or Laurie Metcalf would leave thinking 2 (really 3) seasons was enough, despite Sara leaving The Talk last year to focus on The Conners.
Happy about more AMLT. Sad about Schooled and Single Parents.
ABC renewed 4 sitcoms and ordered 1 new one. I have to assume they’re going to pick up at least one more or they’re going to stick with one Wednesday night comedy block and one sitcom will be mid season.
The cancellation of Schooled really annoyed me. The Season 2 finale didn’t give the show closure, but still ABC renewed The Goldberg’s for season 8?
ABC for years and years was my #1 network. As of now I have ZERO shows! (But Call Mom was one of the pilots I tagged, so maybe that number will go up to ONE?)
If you haven’t checked out Stumptown, give it a shot. It’s much better than your standard cop/detective show. If you have already checked it out and didn’t like it, well, nothing pleases everyone!
I was hesitant to watch Stumptown but ended up watching it one night when I was bored. I got hooked pretty quickly. It’s a solid show.
I actually did watch the first 6 eps, but it lost my interest and I walked away.
I am disappointed about Bless This Mess. With what happened on the finale, it would have been such a great next season.
I was hoping it was the young neighbor’s son and his girlfriend that would be pregnant. That would have been a lot better story wise than the lead couple. Though I’d guess it was written in because she was pregnant IRL (though I don’t know if that’s true).
Yay Rookie!
Ugh, this past season of American Housewife was such a snoozefest. I really like the actors and the characters, but the scripts are boring.
Very happy to hear AMLT has been renewed! By far my favorite program on network TV! Can’t wait for season 3!
I’ve got all of Season 2 of A Million Little Things on my DVR. Was saving it so I had something to watch during the summer break. Also, cause I didn’t know if it would get a Season 3 order. Well, I’m so happy that I can finally watch Season 2 and know there is a Season 3 to look forward to. Thank you ABC. And a HUGE thank you for renewing Stumptown. They are the only ABC shows I watch.
YAY, Stumptown! One down, Prodigal Son (good chance, but still not renewed) and Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist (probably doomed) to go.
Prodigal Son is renewed!
Prodigal Son was renewed today. So, yeah! I’m very happy that Stumptown and The Rookie were both renewed.
i wish they would stop canceling the sitcoms. we need some laughs in our lives.
Yes. Bless This Mess was one show that had me laughing out loud each week. Will miss this mess.
seriously? laugh out loud ??
I wish they’d make a sitcom worth watching. A comedy that’s funny would be nice
I am thrilled for Stumpton, The Rookie and Mixed-ish
