The Umbrella Academy: Everything We Know So Far About Season 3
It's been 23 months since The Umbrella Academy's Hargreeves siblings prevented the apocalypse — though in a more figurative way, their world still was shattered upon returning to 2019.
As fans of Netflix's comic book adaptation will remember, Season 2 ended — way back in July 2020 — with the Hargreeves accidentally creating a new timeline in which their father, Sir Reginald, hadn't died, and he was the founder of the Sparrow Academy instead of the Umbrella Academy. (Even Ben is alive in this new reality!)
Nearly two years after that tantalizing cliffhanger, The Umbrella Academy will at last return on Wednesday, June 22, and there's an ever-growing list of other hints about what Season 3 will entail. We've gathered up that intel for you in the list below, which includes character details about the seven mysterious Sparrows, episode titles for all 10 installments and a confirmed Season 3 locale that might leave you with some, uh, reservations about watching the third season with the lights off.
Scroll down to revisit everything we know so far about the new episodes, then hit the comments with your hopes for Season 3!
WHO: Justin Cornwell as Marcus (Sparrow No. 1)
Cornwell (The InBetween, CBS' Training Day) will play Marcus aka Sparrow No. 1, described as a "charming, chiseled colossus. Honest, virtuous, and demanding, Marcus keeps the family together. Graceful but lethal, calculated but compassionate, he is as smart as he is strong. Marcus is disciplined, rational and in control. He oozes confidence and leadership without ever having to raise his voice."
WHO: Justin H. Min as Ben (Sparrow No. 2)
Umbrella Academy fans have already watched Min for two seasons as Afterlife Ben, a deceased Hargreeves sibling that only Klaus could see as Ben remained in limbo between life and death. But in the newly created timeline where Season 3 will take place, Ben is alive and well, and he "is not the sweet Ben we know and love," his character description warns. "This Ben is a Machiavellian tactician, wrapped up in a pretty boy body with a rumbling inner-squid. Vicious, pragmatic and hyper-vigilant, Ben is determined to gain his status as the leader at all costs."
WHO: Britne Oldford as Fei (Sparrow No. 3)
Oldford (The Flash, The Path) will play the third Sparrow, Fei, who "sees the world in a special way. She comes across as a misanthrope who would rather be alone than spend even a second with you. But truth be told, Fei wishes she had a friend. Most of the time, Fei is the smartest person in the room and willing to work things out. But if you cross her there's no looking back because Fei won't stop until the job is done."
WHO: Jake Epstein as Alphonso (Sparrow No. 4)
Epstein (Degrassi: The Next Generation) will co-star as Sparrow No. 4, Alphonso. Per his character description, years of fighting crime have left Alphonso's face and body with "countless visual reminders of his battles," which can be glimpsed in the teaser photo above. "To compensate, Alphonso is armed with a caustic and biting sense of humor. The only thing he likes better than verbally battering anyone foolish enough to get in his face, is a good pizza and a six-pack of beer."
WHO: Genesis Rodriguez as Sloane (Sparrow No. 5)
Sloane, played by Rodriguez (The Fugitive, Time After Time), is described as "a romantic and a dreamer who feels a higher cosmic calling, leaving her eager to see the world and experience a life beyond her upbringing." Though Sloane's obligations to her family keep her tethered to the Academy, "Sloane has plans... and one day she might just be brave enough to act on them."
WHO: Cazzie David as Jayme (Sparrow No. 6)
David (Eighty-Sixed miniseries) rounds out the human Sparrows as No. 6, Jayme, described as a "loner hidden under a hoodie" with a "fear-inducing snarl." Smart and sharp as a knife, Jayme "spends most of her time hanging with Alphonso, her only friend."
WHO: Dread-Inducing Psykronium Cube as Christopher (Sparrow No. 7)
Because The Umbrella Academy has never been afraid to get a little weird, TV "newcomer" Dread-Inducing Psykronium Cube will appear as the seventh and final Sparrow, a telekinetic cube of unknown origin known as Christopher. Here's what we know about him: "He can turn the room freezing cold and induce paralyzing fear. He acts as the Sparrows' consulted oracle who hands out incredible advice and serves as the family mediator. Trustworthy, loyal and treated by the Sparrows like any other sibling, Christopher is a force to be reckoned with." (His photo does induce dread, we'll give him that!)
WHO: Javon Walton in a Mystery Role
Walton, best known for playing Ashtray on HBO's Euphoria, was confirmed as a Season 3 addition in March. Details on his character, however, are being kept under wraps.
WHO: The Returning Vets
Fear not, though: Despite the many new faces in The Umbrella Academy's cast, several familiar ones will be back, too. In addition to Elliot Page as Viktor, Tom Hopper as Luther, David Castañeda as Diego, Emmy Raver-Lampman as Allison, Robert Sheehan as Klaus, Aidan Gallagher as Number Five and Colm Feore as Sir Reginald, Season 2 addition Ritu Arya will also return as Lila.
Behind the camera, series co-creator Steve Blackman is back as showrunner for Season 3.
WHEN: June 2022
After keeping fans in suspense for months, Netflix has finally announced a Wednesday, June 22 release date for the third season. All Season 3 episodes will drop at once.
WHERE: Hotel Oblivion
Last October, it was revealed that Season 3 will at least partially take place at Hotel Oblivion, an unsettling locale that first appeared in the third volume of the comics on which the series is based. But additional details about how, exactly, Hotel Oblivion factors into the upcoming installments haven't been shared.
WHAT: Episode Titles Revealed
During Netflix's Geeked Week back in June 2021, Blackman unveiled all 10 episode titles for Season 3, along with some clues about their meanings. Without further ado:
* Episode 1: "Meet the Family"
* Episode 2: "World's Biggest Ball of Twine"
* Episode 3: "Pocket Full of Lightning"
* Episode 4: "Kugelblitz"
* Episode 5: "Kindest Cut"
* Episode 6: "Marigold," a title that Blackman said might hold special meaning for superfans, especially those familiar with the Umbrella Academy source material
* Episode 7: "Auf Wiedersehen"
* Episode 8: "Wedding at the End of the World"
* Episode 9: "Six Bells," which Blackman said will mean much more once viewers have started watching the season
* Episode 10: "Oblivion" (Hmm, as in Hotel Oblivion, perhaps?)
