TVLINE | Tell me about casting Paul Rudd as Murder Victim No. 3!
Paul is a good friend of Marty’s and has been for a little while. He also had worked with Selena on a lovely film [for Netflix], The Fundamentals of Caring. And he has revered Steve Martin since he was a kid. He seemed like a logical person to go to with a ridiculous request, which was, “Can you come be in the last five minutes of Season 2, potentially with an option to return [for] Season 3?”
TVLINE | So it’s safe to assume Rudd will return? You won’t just have a body double sprawled out on stage for the entirety of Season 3?
The hope is that he doesn’t get some huge thing that takes him away [from us], but I’m pretty sure we’re in good shape. Our victims play major parts in the season, so we’re really excited to have him be a part of it.
I love anything Paul Rudd is in, so YAY!
A List, don’t think so..
he’s an Avenger … and Paul Rudd (beloved by many / most people) … and an unofficially the 7th Friend
he’s A List – yes even if you don’t think so
I was so freaking excited to see Paul Rudd in the finale. Kudos to them for pulling it off as a surprise. Seeing him play an a-hole is entertaining. I hope we get more than a few scenes of him and Steve Martin verbally sparring. Looking forward to Season 3.
Absolutely hated the finale. So all of this was done because a podcaster’s assistant from Oklahoma wanted her big break? Give me a break!
There was so much wasted opportunity for a much better ending. Poppy’s killing should have been tied together with Charles and Oliver’s parentage issues, and the answer to the killer should have been on the back of the torn painting everyone was looking for throughout Season 2.
Way too many dead ends this season. Sloppy writing. Way too many celebrity cameos that go nowhere. Not sure I’ll watch the third season. Loved the first one. This last one was a complete waste of time in the end.
“too many celebrity cameos that go nowhere…”
Unlike most cameos.
Not sure you even watched this season. The character that was murdered was Bunny, the killer was Poppy.
Not just a big break, but Poppy also wanted Bunny’s painting that was worth a lot of money. Money is motive for many a crime.
I don’t think it was ever revealed that Poppy wanted the painting for money. She wanted to do a podcast on the disappearance of Rose Cooper (I think that was her name). They never actually said why she wanted the painting, but I assumed it had to do with her podcast idea. Killing Bunny seemed kind of random. I guess she could be mad Bunny refused to sell her the painting, but aside from that very flimsy reason, there seemed no other motive to target Bunny specifically and given the brutal nature of the killing it would seem like Poppy had a personal vendetta against Bunny but she didn’t. I’m also confused by the text cuz I originally thought she sent the text knowing Mabel was in the apartment & she was luring the guys there for the cops to show up, but it seems she sent the text to get them all out of the building. Her intention then would not have been to frame them originally. I wonder if her intention was to frame Cinda or if that opportunity just fell in her lap. There are still a lot of unanswered questions just as there were with Tim’s murder & I doubt we will get the answers since none of the unanswered questions from Tim’s murder have been resolved yet either.
Oh I agree that Poppy/Becky wanted the podcast. She was very ambitious/greedy. She was interested in that painting too, so it makes sense she would sell it while also setting up her podcast.
Yeah, this seemed like they decided who they wanted to be the murderer a bit late in the game, and then just tried to force some of the plot points to fit and left a bunch of plot holes everywhere else. I like the actors and characters and I find the show entertaining, but there’s not really any reason to try to solve the mystery.
Who crapped in your Cheerios. You’re saying it was awful but yet you watched till the end. Haha I love all of the actors and will keep watching.
I love this show. The way you have two older guys and the one beautiful Mabel it plays out so well. All the chapters and guest stars are fantastic and spine tingling. Thank you for a wonderful entertained series. So excited about Season 3
and the best part is the two older guys … are still at the top of their game and as enjoyable to watch as when they were as young as Selena is now
if this show doesn’t win multiple Emmys – especially for Best Comedy and best actor for Steve Martin (or Martin Short for that matter) – the show will have been robbed
and not to mention it ridiculous Selena wasn’t nominated for Best Actress for Season 1
The very BEST thing on TV! Every aspect of this show is award worthy, from set dressing to cinematography. Best work Short and Martin have have done, and the writing…genius! I was more anticipating this finale than the premiere of House of the Dragon. (It was an order of magnitude better than HotD) Can’t wait to see more
My theory for the Paul Rudd’s character in season 3 is that he is Lucy’s step dad. We have never met Lucy’s step dad, but it would stand to reason her mom would get involved with an actor given her history. I don’t know if OMITB will go the route of him having inappropriate intentions toward Lucy, but I do think Lucy was the “her” Charles told him to stay away from. Given the animosity between them, my guess is Charles will be the prime suspect, especially if Ben turns out to be his ex’s new husband. We may even meet Lucy’s mom next season. She would be the obvious choice for the killer, especially if he was making moves on Lucy. Lucy could also be the killer and Charles would go to great lengths to steer the investigation in the wrong direction if he suspected that. I don’t think Lucy will be a killer though and the mom seems too obvious if my theory of Ben being Lucy’s stepdad is correct. I think we will get a whole new crop of suspects so I will refrain from making any guesses cuz I’m not sure we’ve met the killer yet. One thing I’m almost positive of is that it won’t tie back to Tim’s murder and the unresolved plot points.
Lucy! It was not likely he was talking about Mabel. Good call.
I briefly considered Mabel, but if there was anything between them I feel like she would’ve reacted differently. She was more annoyed that there was another murder than distraught about the Ben.
Another option, although I wouldn’t like it as much, is that the “her” was Jan. If Ben was visiting Jan in prison I could see Charles warning him away from her, but that scene felt more like Charles was protecting “her” which still makes Lucy the most likely option IMO.
you seriously think:
Ben is Lucy’s new step-dad .. and he’s what ? hitting on her and trying to woe her romantically or have sex with her (who presumably is still in high school) … while also married to her mother ?
yeah … “her” is NOT Lucy
stay away from “her” could literally be anyone – including various new characters that haven’t been introduced or even cast yet – including an actress or someone else involved with the play – may be even the playwright or a producer on the play, etc
or if it’s a woman (not Mabel) already known could be:
Nina, Will’s wife (also not yet seen), Naomi Jackson (from the Brazzos reboot show – who is someone Ben could have met thru Charles (and someone he’d presumably be protective of after working with her for a year – 18 episodes of Brazzos 2.0)
OR … could be Mabel’s mom … or Anaya (who also hasn’t been seen yet – Lucy’s old friend – who is may be 18 or over … so nothing illegal at least on Ben’s part)
or may be even … Alice ???
there’s literally no reason to make a first guess that “her” is Lucy or that Ben is hitting on his own step-daughter sexually or something
try to expand your list of suspects – and it could also just be a totally new character (may be a new resident at the Arconia) or even just a woman working on the play – an actress … a stage hand or costume assistant etc
You need to calm down. It was a guess for goodness sake. Also, I put the same guess on Twitter and have gotten a lot of positive responses that agree it’s a good theory. As for him being inappropriate with Lucy, I said I didn’t know if they would go with that angle. It’s a possibility and it does happen IRL. He could also be abusive or even just a jerk or a liar making false promises. There are many reasons why Charles would warn Ben away from Lucy if he is her stepdad. I just listed a few. Again, this is a theory. I don’t know why your theories have any more validity than mine. I think it’s unlikely “her” is someone we haven’t met yet cuz that means the audience can’t guess. I do agree the killer could be a brand new suspect though. If you don’t like my theory you always have the option to keep scrolling. No need to get so worked up over it. Lol.
the only thing about Ben that can be assumed for now:
he’s a bit of an A-hole … AND presumably a good actor if Oliver cast him in his new Broadway play …
that’s about all that can be said about Ben … for now
oh and that the top boss of the show (aka showrunner) has now said publicly (in a different article) that Emma and (presumably Lucy’s stepdad) won’t be in Season 3 – so he’s either telling the truth or he’s lying – time will tell
I put forth a theory. We are allowed to theorize, but I never claimed I was correct or that I know for a fact Ben is Lucy’s stepdad. I think it would be a good option rife with story potential, but that is my own opinion. I do know the EP said they wouldn’t be a part of season 3, but if they were I doubt the EP would want to spoil such a big reveal. Remember Andrew Garfield swore he wasn’t in Spider-Man. Sometimes people lie to keep the secret.
That’s a good theory!! I really like that!
My other thought was that maybe Mabel is dating him and he did something to her.
It’s not impossible but her reaction was not one of someone that was close to Ben. She wasn’t distraught or happy. She just seemed irritated like “Not again”. I do hope that her and Alice aren’t together and we won’t see her next season. I don’t think they had any chemistry and the kissing scenes were just awkward to watch. I don’t have any issue with her being paired with a woman. They just need to have chemistry to enjoy the pairing. I’m guessing Mabel is single now.
Wow that was profound thinking💯
It’s all good.
I loved the season except for the reveal — I think it is a bit of cheat when the killer is not really a suspect until the final moments.
I liked the season, but I really wanted the killer to be Cinda Canning. I’ve never liked her character since the beginning. LOL! That being said, I’m okay with them taking out Poppy and Detective Krebs.
Poppy was always a suspect. Many people suspected her from the first episode but assumed she did it for Cinda. I don’t like the killer reveal because the misdirect was illogical and contrived. I’m fine with Poppy/Becky being the killer, but the idea that Cinda wouldn’t know that Poppy and Becky are the same person just cuz her hair style was different is ludicrous. The fact she also went to her hometown & assisted Cinda and no one recognized her cuz “new hair” defies all logic. Her face is very distinguishable. She also didn’t change her quiet, mousy mannerisms at all. Her picture would’ve been plastered all over the news & businesses in town yet no one realized Poppy and Becky were the same person?! That’s lazy writing to facilitate a twist reveal that is in no way earned IMO.
Loved the whole Season 2 finale! Towards the end of Episode 9 it felt pretty obvious that Tina Fey murdered Bunny – or was at least involved or knew about it. So it was a nice twist. Although she & the cop didnt make any sense as a couple! Definitely my fave show on tv right now by far!
I got a little nervous that there might not be a Season 3. I don’t try to look ahead online when it comes to that kinda thing. It wouldve been insane either way to kill off Charles, which became obvious quickly bc they were sitting there on the couch w/him under the sheet & no weren’t upset at all, but that still didnt mean there was a S3.
I admit it looked, to me anyway, a little like things could be wrapping up when Mabel started painting over her mural.
Crazy not to have a S3 but 🤷♀️?? Actors do have other projects & who was g9nna die – in their building?! Don’t know if Paul’s Broadway character moved in but that doesn’t matter. But possible. Famous people do live there only so far they’ve been themselves. Just glad there are more episodes to come!
And Paul Rudd is gonna be great! I must agree with Mr Hoffman calling him a “hoarder of the fountain of youth” bc at first I was like, “It’s Paul Rudd!” & then for a second, “Wait, is it? How does he look younger than ever?!”
Seriously tho, how? This isn’t “Clueless” or “Friends” or even “I Love You, Man” the latter 2 were a decade-plus some ago. And “Clueless” is about to be 30 yrs ago! (I know he’s done a lot since, but not big on superhero movies. I did just see the latest “Ghostbusters” – a shockingly fun movie after growing up with the 1st 2 but he’s like baby faced in Only Murders!). Stoked AF for S3 with Paul Rudd! So fun! Love, love, love Only Murders!
I love Paul Rudd from the first time I saw him on Friends. He is awesome as Antman! Can’t wait to see more of him in Season 3 of OMITB.
Am thrilled to see Paul Rudd and to watch the next season💯🆒👍
A rare show where the 2nd season was better than the first.
Query regarding the podcast title (not just the show). It’s supposed to be only murders IN THE BUILDING; the building in question being the Arconia. That was established in the pilot.
This murder happened in a theatre. So… are they changing it to Only Murders In A Building? Or, is this theatre in the Arconia (one of Nina Lin’s changes? that was completed within a year?) & that’s how they’re getting around it. The title isn’t Only Murder Victims From The Building (presuming Glenroy was living there).
I don’t know if they are changing it but the EP did say we could consider it murders in buildings, which is still kind of ridiculous. No one is ever going to get killed outside of a building? Lol.
you’re not wrong – but also it’s just a podcast title – not some sacred rule – and who knows may be even something they discuss as they start figuring out who killed Ben
Oliver: should we change the title of the podcast ?
and than he and Charles go on a riff about it
either way – it doesn’t really matter
and I think it’s safe to assume no the theater is not in or part of the Arconia – it’s just a regular Broadway theater … in the theater district where all the other theaters are
also … it’s feasible they’d change “the” to mean the building the murder took place in and may be even doing a live podcast broadcast with a live audience at the theater
as for what Nina had planned I doubt any of it will actually be a focus of Season 3 and what she was thinking (that “space pod” on the roof as Charles called is likely something like a night club or something along those lines .. ie. to MONETIZE the Arconia in a new way – which could be a long game plan for season 4 or 5 (and new murders back at the Arconia but not of a tenant but just a club goer visiting the building)
Please wite season 3 with fewer side themes and and those you have be more connected to each other. I sure do love the dynamics of the characters but season 2 was so frenetic somehow. Have a great time writing!
It was such a fun surprise to have Paul Rudd show up. I didn’t even realize it was him at first because of the lighting and also because the character he’s playing is so different. Thanks for the interview about his casting!
As for the finale, the one thing that bugs me most is the fact that it was the fingerprints on the knife that gave it away. They should’ve given Officer Williams the knife from the beginning and then we’d at least have known whose prints they were, even though we wouldn’t yet know who Becky really was. That said, it was a fun finale, and I think a lot of this show has more to do with having fun with it than with offering good clues. I also don’t know why Poppy told Mabel that she was Becky. I guess she thought that put the suspicion on Cinda.
the other thing that makes no sense about the knife having finger prints is … so Poppy was thinking ahead & snuck into Oliver’s apartment to steal the knife (and apparently he never noticed before it showed up in Charles’ apartment about 2 weeks later – accord to Lucy saying the wedding / night of Bunny’s murder was two weeks ago)
so she got Oliver’s knife … she wore a full body suit or whatever to hide her identity (but apparently came up the elevator so Lester assumes he let the killer in) … BUT she didn’t wear gloves ????
and that knife technically had at least three (or more) sets of prints on it – Oliver’s … Lucy’s … may be Will’s or whomever else might have visited Oliver and may be touched it … and Poppy’s prints … with that many prints is it really that easy to distinguish who’s prints are on it ?
and if Poppy planted the murder weapon in Charles’ apartment what was the plan ? Mabel knew she’d never had touched it so it would actually exonerate her .. and put the target on Oliver — if they turned it into the police
or also on Charles if he had touched it (just happened Lucy found it first)
or they’d throw the knife away and there’d be no murder weapon without which they were nothing more than persons of interest
like Jan and her knife to stab herself – it kind of doesn’t exactly make sense
LOVE Paul Rudd. My favorite in everything he does!!!
Love Paul Rudd! I’m very excited for a season 3 and for him to be in it. Hopefully it will be as fun as seasons 1 and 2!
I think we’ll definitely see Ben upright and talking in flashbacks in season 3.
