Grey's Anatomy: The Best Of Alex Karev

Dr. Alex Karev may not be getting a proper sendoff on Grey's Anatomy, but he's for sure getting one here at TVLine. In the wake of news that Justin Chambers has already made his final appearance on ABC's venerable medical drama, we decided to take a Karev-ian trip down memory lane in search of the character's 10 most memorable moments.

8. 'I Do' If by Sea

Forget Jolex's Halloween wedding — the nuptials we'll always remember are the ones that took place after disaster RSVP'd yes to their lavish ceremony in Season 14's "All of Me," so the beleaguered couple wound up being married by Mer on a ferry.

7. 'Stick With the Decent Guy'

Never again could Alex be called "devil spawn" after Season 3's "Didn't We Almost Have It All?" Despite his love for former amnesiac Ava, he did the hard thing, the right thing, breaking both their hearts to send her back to her life as Rebecca — and back to Rebecca's husband.

9. 'I Want Waffle Sundays'

Fearing he was prison-bound in Season 13's "Roar," Alex tried to look out for his person by suggesting waffle Sundays with Mer and her sisters until he got sent up the river. He also implored Grey to be nicer to them — even Amelia. "I'm not gonna always be around," he said presciently.

5. Friends... and Family

Following Mer's assault in Season 12's "The Sound of Silence," Alex was there for her, going so far as to climb into her hospital bed to offer a shoulder to literally cry on. Against all odds, he even made her laugh when he noted, "You've got a lot of snot!"

1. Carried Away

Long before he became Mer's person, Alex was, in many ways, Izzie's. So when she couldn't bear to leave late fiancé Denny's bedside in Season 2's "Losing My Religion," it was Alex who carried her away and made us all wish we had a Karev in our corner.

10. Father's Day

Bless his broken heart, Alex gave deadbeat father Jimmy a happier ending than he deserved in Season 10's "Take It Back." Despite the fact that he was, in Karev's estimation, a total "son of a bitch," Alex still tried to get his old man's subsequent family to visit him on his deathbed.

3. Once More, With Feeling

As Jo entered a mental-health facility for treatment in Season 16's "Nothing Left to Cling to," she was quick to note that she and Alex weren't even legally married — he had an out. So when she was released, he got down on bended knee and re-proposed to assure her that he was all in.

6. Mom's the Word

Though it crushed Alex to discover that his mere presence could upset his mother's hard-won routine in Season 14's "Fight For Your Mind," he worked through his anger to reach out to her in a way that would seem altogether ordinary to the librarian — by asking to get a library card.

2. History Repeating

Rarely were the scars of Alex's past more apparent or painfully rendered than in Season 4's "Freedom, Part 2." After Rebecca slit her wrists, he insisted to Izzie — pleaded with her to believe, really — that he could take care of her, in essence, doing for her what he'd done for his mother.

4. 'Today's the Day My Life Begins'

Borrowing liberally from a young patient's graduation speech, Alex gave Izzie — and all of us — the feels with his wedding vows in Season 5's "What a Difference a Day Makes." "Today, Izzie Stevens, our life together begins," he said, radiating love and sincerity, "and I for one can't wait."
