The X-Files Revival Easter Eggs

xfiles-eastereggs-ep5-unwanted

When Miller and Einstein knock on the basement office's door, Scully calls out, "Nobody here but the FBI's most unwanted" — the same way Mulder greeted her when she first showed up in the series' pilot.

xfiles-eastereggs-ep5-breker

Eric Breker, who plays Agent Brem, appeared in several episodes from the series' original run, including "Demons," "Emily" "Christmas Carol" and "Apocrypha."

xfiles-eastereggs-ep5-gunmen

The Lone Gunmen, who died in the Season 9 episode "Jump the Shark," appear at the table with Skinner in Mulder's hallucination.

xfiles-eastereggs-ep5-table

In his hallucination, Mulder imagines he is on a table similar to ones shown in alien abduction scenes like the one in Season 2's "Duane Barry."

xfiles-eastereggs-ep5-triangle

Mulder waking up in the hospital after an extended flight of imagination with Skinner at his side is reminiscent of Season 6's "Triangle."

xfiles-eastereggs-pullout

The episode's overhead shot, which pulls way out and eventually shows us the entire planet, is similar to the Mulder-and-Scully-in-a-boat ending to the second X-Files film, I Want to Believe.

xfiles_eastereggs_ep4_spooky

The local cop tells Mulder and Scully they'd been called to the crime scene because "you two have experience with these, um, spooky cases," invoking the "s" word that was often used to describe/mock Mulder and his work in the series' original run.

Veena Sood, who appeared in Season 1's "Shadows," plays Margaret Scully's Dr. Colquitt.

xfiles_eastereggs_ep4_downtown

While the creature kills the school board member in her home, Petula Clark's upbeat tune "Downtown" plays in the background, much like Johnny Mathis' "Wonderful, Wonderful" provided the soundtrack for some seriously messed-up stuff in Season 4's "Home" (also written by executive producer Glen Morgan and series creator Chris Carter).

xfiles_eastereggs_ep4_onebreath1

In addition to the visual flashbacks to Season 2's "One Breath" — which, like "Home Again," was written by Morgan and Chris Carter — the episode features a few spoken references to Scully's coma episode. First, Dana tells her mother, "I've been where you are." Then...

xfiles_eastereggs_ep4_onebreath2

... when Scully asks if they've ever run into a phenomenon where someone can wish someone else back to life, Mulder says, "I invented it" — referring to his time by Scully's bedside in that same episode.

xfiles_eastereggs_ep4_charlie

The estranged Charlie Scully was voiced by series sound technician Andrew Morgado.

x-files-easter-eggs-ep3-huffers

The two high-as-a-kite huffers at the episode's start are played by Tyler Labine (Reaper) and Nicole Parker Smith, who played "Stoner" and "Chick," respectively, in two Season 3 episodes: "Quagmire" and "War of the Corophages."

x-files-easter-eggs-ep3-clerk

Also from the original series' guest-cast roster: Alex Diakun, who plays this episode's peeping-tom hotel manager, appeared in "Jose Chung's 'From Outer Space'," "Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose" and "Humbug" — as well as the second feature film The X-Files: I Want to Believe.

x-files-easter-egg-ep3-speedo

Mulder's red Speedo, first seen in Season 2's "Duane Barry," makes a blink-and-you-miss-it return while the hotel manager spies on his guests.

x-files-easter-eggs-ep3-fox

When Mulder looks into Scully's room, he does so through the eyes of a taxidermied fox — a nod to the character's first name.

x-files-easter-eggs-ep3-graves

The gravestones in the cemetery pay homage to series producer/director Kim Manners, who died in 2009, and Jack Hardy, first assistant director on Millenium, The Lone Gunmen and The X-Files: I Want to Believe.

x-files-easter-eggs-ep3-grave

When Scully's call wakes Mulder, his ringtone is the series' theme song.

x-files-easter-eggs-ep3-immortal

Mulder admonishes Scully for going into a potentially dangerous situation all alone, prompting her to cite a favorite — yet debunked — fan theory that started with "Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose" and gathered steam after "Tithonus": "I'm immortal."

x-files-easter-eggs-gilligan

Kyle's adopted last name is Gilligan, which is likely a nod to X-Files executive producer/writer and Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan.

x-files-easter-eggs-kossef

Christine Willes, who played FBI agent/therapist Karen Kosseff (aka Scully's counselor in Seasons 2 and 4), plays hospital head Sister Mary in the revival.

x-files-easter-eggs-poster

Also there? His "I Want to Believe" poster, though why that was still there — when we remember Doggett taking it — remains a mystery. On a related note, Fox doesn't seem very happy to see the iconic image once more.

x-files-easter-eggs-pencils

EPISODE 1: "MY STRUGGLE"

Remember when Mulder was bored in Season 5's "Chinga"? The sharpened pencils he lobbed at the drop ceiling in his basement office then (and in subsequent episodes) are still there.

x-files-easter-eggs-garner

Hiro Kanagawa, who played tentacle-sprouting Peter Tanaka in Season 2's "Firewalker" and cryobiologist Dr. Yonechi in Season 4's "Synchrony" (and also appeared in a few Millenium and The Lone Gunmen episodes), shows up as Garner, the scientist who explains the alien-inspired craft to Mulder.
