'Chicago Med': Your Guide To Who's Who
Chicago Med - Season 1
Dr. Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss)
Specialty: Chief ER resident/trauma surgeon
"He's had to work very hard for what he's achieved in his life," Gehlfuss says of his "very insular" character. Needless to say, Dr. Halstead doesn't take too kindly to his new superior, the white collar Dr. Rhodes (played by Colin Donnell). "We collide a little bit in the best of ways." The dynamic between Will and Dr. Natalie Manning (Torrey DeVitto), however, is much more pleasant. "Her buddy/best friend is Dr. Halstead," DeVitto shares. "I hope it's a friendship and whatever that people root for. They just have this quick banter."
Chicago Med - Season 1
Nurse April Sexton (Yaya DaCosta)
Although April was introduced last season on Chicago Fire, DaCosta is still learning about her character's background. "I didn't know that April was a first-generation American," the actress shares. "The family changed their name to Sexton to sound more American, but she's actually Brazilian-American, which is fun for me because it's not too far from home." As for any potential romance for April, when a new doctor enters the hospital, "there's kind of a suggestion that there might be some chemistry — and then that quickly dissipates," DaCosta previews.
Chicago Med - Season 1
Dr. Connor Rhodes (Colin Donnell)
Specialty: Trauma surgery fellow
The newcomer to the hospital comes from "a very prominent family in Chicago," the Arrow alum reveals. His medical style, meanwhile, is less stuffy. "He's a bit of a cowboy. He has a certain way of practicing medicine that is a little bit unorthodox." Couple that with the fact that he's the new guy on staff, and it's no surprise that "he definitely does butt heads with Dr. Halstead a bit."
Chicago Med - Season 1
Dr. Natalie Manning (Torrey DeVitto)
Specialty: Emergency pediatric medicine
"She's the best character I've ever played," raves the Pretty Little Liars/Vampire Diaries alumna. "She's strong, she's inspiring. She's also compassionate. She has great bedside manner, and it comes from the pediatric side of what she does." Natalie is also very pregnant when we first meet her, but "she hasn't slowed down" at work, Devitto says, adding that the story of how the doc got preggers and who the father is promises to be "an emotional journey."
Chicago Med - Season 1
Dr. Ethan Choi (Brian Tee)
Specialty: Infectious diseases
"What drives Ethan is his instincts," Tee describes. "What I love about him is he comes from that military background, that 'war zone'... So they've actually, in the show, created a whole treatment trauma room dubbed 'Baghdad,' and that's Ethan's domain."
Chicago Med - Season 1
Sharon Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson)
Specialty: The head of Chicago Med
As the venerable authoritative figure, "Goodwin's position in this hospital is for her doctors," Merkerson says. "She's always fighting to really take their side, until she finds out what the issue is to feel otherwise."
Chicago Med - Season 1
Dr. Daniel Charles (Oliver Platt)
Specialty: Chief of Psychiatry
Since Dr. Charles doesn't enjoy the administrative aspects of his job, "Maybe he's made a little deal with the devil there," Platt suggests. "And who he's actually interested in is the people out there who don't have $400-an-hour to spend on mental health support." But even the best docs have their own issues. "Most shrinks are slightly crazy themselves," executive producer Dick Wolf adds. "They all have dysfunctional families. [Dr. Charles has] four ex-wives [with] one child by each wife, ranging in age from 32 to seven."
Chicago Med - Season 1
Dr. Sarah Reese (Rachel DiPillo)
Specialty: Undecided
As a fourth-year med student one week into hospital rounds, Sarah is the viewers' way into the action. "Everything is overwhelming because there's so much chaos, all of the time, and lives are always on the line," DiPillo describes, adding that Sarah has yet to decide on a speciality, so "she's everybody's shadow."
NBCUniversal Events - Season 2015
Maggie Lockwood (Marlyne Barrett)
Specialty: Head of ER
Maggie has been trained by Goodwin to run the new trauma center and ER, which is opening its rebuilt doors after last season's explosive planted pilot. That makes her "the gap between the care of the patient and the protection from the residents who don't necessarily all know what they're doing yet," Barrett explains.
