New Girl Renewed

New Girl Renewed for (Final) Season 7 — How Many Episodes Are We Getting?

New Girl is not gone, girl. But it will be soon.

Fox has renewed the Zooey Deschanel-fronted comedy for an abbreviated seventh and final season, TVLine has learned.

Although a Fox rep declined to confirm an episode count, sources say that the farewell season will consist of eight installments (something co-star Jake Johnson has since confirmed on Twitter).

Given the series’ bubble status, producers packed last month’s Season 6 finale with closure. “I think it would be really disappointing to have the show go off the air and not give the audience a satisfactory conclusion to a story line that’s been the engine of the show since Season 1,” EP Brett Baer previously told TVLine of the decision to give Deschanel’s Jess and Jake Johnson’s Nick (aka the series’ central couple) a happy ending. “That said, we’re obviously hoping [for a Season 7]. We have ideas for how to propel the show into the future. But we didn’t want to go off the air without answering this question.”

New Girl was a breakout hit when it premiered in 2011, drawing 10.3 million viewers and a 4.8 demo rating; it was Fox’s biggest comedy bow since The Bernie Mac Show launched in 2001. Ratings cooled with each subsequent season, with its sixth season averaging 2.7 million viewers and a 1.3 demo rating.

Eight episodes more than I thought we’d get! Excited to see how they wrap everything up.

  2. samantha says:

I’m gonna miss Winnie the Bish the most.

  3. Anna says:

Honestly, I’d really like to get ten episodes. Most season cut-orders are 10 and 8 just feels so rushed. But I’m so thankful that the series didnt end with that last season, it was pretty terrible. Hopefully they can redeem themselves and give us fans the closure we want to see!

I loved this past season! I laughed harder at some scenes than I have at this show in years! I’m thrilled to get eight goodbye episodes!

  4. Steve C says:

YES!!! Exciting news but 8 episodes. Why not end it with 13 episodes instead?

  5. LittleItaly says:

if you only get 8 episodes, then I would suggest that they extend the running time of the tv show. Instead of it just being 20 minutes make like 40 minutes, so that it doesn’t feel so long. Or do what How I Met Your Mother Did, having the final episode be like an hour long or something? Just hope they don’t make the story line feel so rushed! #LOVENEWGIRLTHO xxx

I’m really starting to like the idea of shortened final seasons. Wrap everything up nicely and tightly without having the unnecessary drama that you’d get in a 22/23 episode season.

    • Gena says:

Exactly. :) I like the idea of series (especially relatively long runners like this one) getting a chance to just wind down, wrap things up properly and end on their own terms.

In this show’s case, as much as I might’ve enjoyed a full season of more Winston & Aly, and maybe a pregnancy/birth storyline for Cece & Schmidt, I kind of like that the shortened season would mean not dragging out the Jess & Nick romance

    • Lindsay says:

Agreed, I actually really appreciate shows in general having 10-13 episode seasons, you don’t end up with the filler episodes. A couple months ago I watched all my favorite New Girl episodes in order on Netflix. I could easily cut out 5-8 episodes each season which were just meh.

  7. Joey Padron says:

Glad the show got renewed for one more season. Thank you Fox for giving the show the chance to said goodbye.

  8. Ray says:

Grateful to FOX as they could’ve just cancelled the show. Something is better than nothing.

  9. iHeart says:

yeah but let’s not forget how New Girl got those good early ratings…..

  10. Boiler says:

Looks like a typical FOX decision. Isn’t New Girl one of their highest rated comedies? Does FOX have anything left to broadcast next year?

  11. Laura E. says:

Glad it’s getting a final season. Eight episodes isn’t a lot. Maybe they can do a time jump before, get through most of CeCe’s pregnancy and Winston and Ally’s wedding planning

  12. JK says:

I’m glad Fox is doing this, I wish CBS would have done the same thing with 2 Broke Girls.

    • Chris says:

The diffeeence between being produced by the network (new girl ) and being produced by an out side company (2 broke girls ).

  13. Shar says:

I just want to see Schmidt as a daddy.

  14. Beverley says:

Love it! I’ve been awaiting this news with bated breath

  15. Marissa L says:

Yes! This is exactly what I was hoping for. Thank you, Fox!

  16. Steve F. says:

Cool. Nice to see New Girl wrap with a final season – now how’s about ending it with Schmidt and Cece being parents to a little girl, thus giving the title a whole new meaning?

  17. Allie says:

I am so thrilled, this is one of my all-time favorite shows!!!!!!!

  18. Gabrielle says:

I’ll take it! Excited for a glass half full.

  19. Julia says:

So glad New Girl is returning! One of the few shows that’s funny, light-hearted & uplifting. Just makes you smile & laugh. Will miss it when it’s gone.

  20. Amy says:

Thank you, thank you, thank you, Fox for renewing New Girl!!! I’ve been waiting on pins and needles all week. So glad my favorite loft-mates get a chance to wrap-up their story even for a short season. Now for the wish list: Seeing Schmidt and CeCe handle parenthood (to hopefully a girl), Winston and Aly’s sure to be wacky wedding and Nick and Jess be in a healthy relationship.

  21. Bill says:

Have loved this show from the beginning. The last episode of last season would have made a good ending. But can’t say it will be nice to ‘wrap up’ their lives a bit more. Looking forward to their wedding? Who knows! Great decision FOX.

  22. arlielaurie68 says:

Love this show, I’ve been a loyal watcher for the entire run, since TV is turning to gross shows like The Exorcist and such, I’m glad to have a least a little more of a show I can watch without feeling sick to my stomach. I wish they had given them a full half order of 12, but I will be glad for more than 0, absolutely.

  23. Aubrey says:

I just wish the episode order was 12 so it would end with 150 episodes, but I’m grateful it got renewed for a final season!

  24. TV Gord says:

It’s a feat that a show that has been on the bubble for so many years will make it to 146 episodes! That’s a win in any interpretation. Eight episodes will be a decent victory lap (and certainly more than other shows get). My hat is off to Fox for the respect!

  25. kmw says:

Well congrats to the fans I was wondering if FOX was going to bring it back but really eight episodes? That is not enough especially for a comedy but maybe the low episode count will turn out in its favor

  26. Jason says:

I always like to see shows go into their final season with this foreknowledge. It allows every episode to be crafted toward that end.

  27. Stacy Wong says:

I am very happy that New Girl is renewed. I hope it is on midseason in January just like Bones was with the shortened final season. I am excited to see how Schmidt is as a dad.

  28. Mike says:

unlike ABC with Last Man Standing, FOX is at least decent enough to let the fans have “closure”. ABC there’s a reason why your the least watched network.

  29. annna says:

yay!! although I wish it was more than eight. At least we proper closure. I can’t wait to see Schmidt as a dad and Nick/Jess happy together.

  30. Terry says:

I love this show so much and at least we will get the wrap up we deserve.

  31. Cam says:

New Girl is the best show on FOX, and the best comedy on all of TV right now. I like it even more than Brooklyn Nine-nine, Silicon Valley, The Veep, Big Bang, and Louie, which begs the question, why would FOX pointlessly cancel the best sitcom on TV and their best show?

Elizabeth Meriwether even posted on twitter that New Girl is the 5th most watched show on Netflix!! If Netflix was smart they’d buy it out! Do the executive producers at FOX believe in self sabotage or something? The cast of New Girl is a bunch of movie stars and you don’t throw that away!

I’ll take 8 episodes, but I don’t think the executive producers responsible for making this decision realize what a huge waste of time, energy, and talent it is to cancel this and then think up something new and better, given the rare intangibles that already make New Girl so great, and from a competitive framework the fact that the sitcom is going the way of the dodo on FOX already, as they have very little to offer up in the sitcom category as it is. I guess era’s have to end.

Sad and wrong decision, but I’ll take it.
