There’s a good reason Pushing Daisies‘ Olive Snook wasn’t The Pie Hole’s head pastry chef.
Kristin Chenoweth, who will soon make her debut on Starz’s American Gods, played the feisty pie-shop waitress on Bryan Fuller’s 2007-’09 dramedy. “She’s not a very good waitress, and she’s not a very good cook,” Chenoweth tells TVLine, laughing. “Neither is Kristin, so it really wasn’t acting.”
She’s not kidding. When Chenoweth had an idea that she should make a pie on set, the props team was more than happy to help. They settled on apple, then gathered the ingredients so she could create the dessert in one of the set’s working ovens.
“They said, ‘Mix the apples with the cream'” that was in a bowl on the side, and “I thought, ‘This cream is really thick,'” she says, starting to chuckle.
Chenoweth assembled the rest of the pie, then put it in to bake. A short while later, a loud, explosive sound came from the oven, because…
“I had put mashed potatoes” — which TV shows often use as stand-ins for foods like ice cream — in the pie, she says, causing it to burst open in the oven. The props team “was like, ‘We’ll clean it up, and you can go ahead and leave,'” Chenoweth says, laughing guiltily. “They said, ‘You don’t need to come back to this area.’ I was like, ‘I know.'”
