Designated Survivor Renewed at ABC

Designated Survivor will live to see another term.

ABC has renewed the Kiefer Sutherland-led political thriller for a second season, TVLine has confirmed. The series’ pickup was set in motion last week with the hiring of Keith Eisner (The Good Wife) as Showrunner No. 4 (following the exits of Amy B. Harris, Jon Harmon Feldman and Jeff Melvoin).

The heavily-promoted Designated Survivor launched in September to a robust 10 million viewers and a 2.2 demo rating. Its numbers have since cooled considerably, with this week’s episode pulling in just shy of 5 million viewers and a 1.0 in the demo.

  1. Dominique says:

excellent news. now hopefully the storytellin will become a little more stable. the constant change of showrunners hasn’t done this show any favors, but it still has so much more potential, so i’m glad it’s coming back!

  2. Judiwb says:

    Yeah!!! Love this show!!

  3. nickspace says:

Love this show, but if the writers aren’t careful, it won’t be seeing a 3rd season.

  4. Kevin Tran says:

Very good news. Looks like we won’t see a Jack Bauer return depending on the future of the latest 24.

    • ErikK says:

that was never going to happen anyway. And frankly, Kiefer is doing a lot better acting here than he ever did on 24.

  5. Cobra says:

Goad to hear, even though I am about five episodes behind (Wednesdays at 10 are packed right now with “Fargo” and “Chicago PD.” I’ll catch up on DS on demand when the season ends.

  6. lordofluck says:

I found the 1st few episodes weak but since they have gotten into the conspiracy it has been getting better and better.

  7. kittycat925 says:

Love “Designated Survivor”, have always liked Kiefer Sutherland, no matter what role he plays!

  8. fernando933 says:

Great news but please move it to another night

  9. This show brings in a lot of money (and viewers) via Netlifx as it is airing simultaneously worldwide. I wonder how much that will factor in if the trend continues (seriously, this show is huge here in the UK.)

  10. Tyre says:

My wife and I got to about the third to last episode and found out we were each only still watching to make the other happy. This sounded promising when it first got picked up and I love several of the actors, but all of the show runners failed to execute the political stuff well, and the conspiracy stuff was often not a big enough part of each episode to pick up the slack. I won’t bother finishing the last few episodes or watching next season.

    • Kim R says:

I’m kind of feeling this way as well. I should check with the husband. :D I feel like the characters are kind of one note. I do love Kal Penn though. His character seems to have more personality or something. :)

  11. Joey Padron says:

Good news the show got renewed for Season 2!

  12. Ella says:

The Catch was so much better.

  13. Denise Y says:

So happy to hear this! I always record it as I don’t get home til 10 on Wednesdays and I hate being rushed so I usually will watch it at 11 so I don’t turn it on half way through. I though they killed off the VP too quickly though. I found it very exciting with his conspiracy and then boom…his wife shot him as soon as he was busted. They could have made that story a little more exciting in my opinion!

  14. Shib says:

    Why ?????

    • Fave says:

why? because it’s a great show maybe? if you can’t see that, you probably also think Trump makes a great president, right?

  15. Kris says:

Glad to hear this. At least there’s one show I like that didn’t get cancelled.

  16. Fairfid M. Caudle says:

Designated Survivor is one of my two favorite shows, along with Madam Secretary! Please, ABC, dont even THINK of cancelling this show! A Fan

  17. Cosmin says:

    great news!

  18. SamofSherwood says:

God I hope the writing improves then, but is handy when you can’t sleep!

So glad this is a favorite.

  20. ErikK says:

Great news. Designated Survivor is the best new show in years. I very rarely was looking forward to every new episode like with this show.

  21. Doris says:

    Good show,
But I still wish he was back as Jack Bauer
