The Big Bang Theory Bernadette Baby

Big Bang Theory Skipping Bernadette's Delivery Scene — Find Out Why

If you tune in to this week’s Big Bang Theory expecting to find Bernadette in stirrups and threatening to rain eternal damnation down on Howard for getting her pregnant in the first place, you’re going to be a wee bit disappointed. According to showrunner Steve Molaro, Thursday’s fall finale — which finds Howard and Bernadette welcoming their first child into the world — won’t actually take viewers into the delivery room during the birth.

“That’s an arena that has been covered fairly well on many shows over the years,” Molaro muses, adding that the episode focuses primarily on “what goes on before we get down to, ‘Let’s push the baby out.'”

Meanwhile, if it seems like Bernadette’s pregnancy timeline sped up a bit between September’s season premiere and the December’s birth, Molaro points out that the character has actually been with child for nearly 11 months in the world of the show.

“She knew she was pregnant on Valentine’s Day last year,” he explains. “And [she’s giving birth] on Amy’s birthday, which is December. I don’t know how much longer we could’ve gotten away with it if anyone was paying attention.” (Translation: Molaro & Co. built in a stealth time jump at some point this fall.)

Speaking of Amy’s birthday, the occasion doubles as her and Sheldon’s sex anniversary. Is Sheldon ready for Round 2? “He is coming around, very slowly as he does,” Molaro teases with a laugh. “He still struggles with physical intimacy, but he doesn’t dislike it. And he loves Amy.”

  1. Kay says:

I’m glad- we don’t really need another delivery scene on TV. At this point it just feels redundant.

    • jj says:

I agree. It’s been played for laughs on many different shows in many different ways. There isn’t anything original that they could do with it at this point.

  2. mikifinn says:

We need a warm welcoming good feeling for 2016.

  3. Mary Lent says:

I can’t believe that pure genius is not being renewed it is a great show it makes you cry and smile at the same time please renew this wonderful show.

  4. Maria says:

Amy’s birthday is Dec 1? Do the writers realize they told us Penny’s birthday is Dec 2? The only reason I remember that is because Dec 2 is my younger daughter’s birthday too.

  5. Lynn says:

This show was so much funnier when it was the four guys and Penny.

  6. i really thought Raj and stuart were going to fight in the delivery room. I don’t need to see it but thats what I was thinking was going to happen.

  7. Adam Delgado says:

Bernadette is still hottest one on that show!

  8. laura says:

This shows getting old.&so are the people.quit watching, wish they kept it penny&the guys.penny gained alot of weight&cut off her hair.a bit butch looking.

  9. Nicole says:

Would have liked to see what happens right after the birth. Office did this with Jim and Pam and it was so so funny!

  10. ChicagoDan says:

Bless them for skipping that tired birthing. And hopefully we won’t see much of the baby going forward. Not sure why they even had Bernadette get pregnant – would’ve been better saved for series finale.

  11. Brody77 says:

So we won’t see Bernadette do a quiet, quiet, quiet, LOUD!! outburst giving birth?

Awww, such a shayme. I am beside myself. (yes, I’m channeling Michel)

Honestly, Bernadette is the sitcom equivalent of a John Cena promo. The character has been sucking the life out of the show for years.

  12. SHARON JACKSON says:

One of the stupiditist shows ever on TV…40 yr old men playing college kids. Getting paid millions per episode… Waste of air time IMO.

    • Sara says:

Another person who hates the show but takes time out to come to this board and complain about it. Time to reprioritize.

    • Jake says:

Not to mention the lead actor thinks doing a Truman Capote imitation is the equivalent of nerdy. Why not have Sheldon wear a feather boa?

    • KatsMom says:

They’re not playing college kids. They never were. When the show started, every one of them had already attained their various degrees. They’re employed by a university to do research. Occasionally, they’re asked to teach courses as well. Honestly, if you don’t even understand the basic concept of a show, you shouldn’t be commenting on it.

    • The Grinch says:

You sound triggered. Eat a Snickers and calm down. Also, all of these characters are at least in their mid 30’s. Perhaps know what your commenting on before you do it.

  13. Jessie says:

Maybe it could be like when Gloria gave birth on Modern Family. We didn’t see it, but we heard plenty of screaming.

  14. Jim J. says:

Steve Molaro got me thinking the decision to skip any Bernadete delivery scene was a good thing, because I think it would have been painful to watch my favorite character on “TBBT” go through all these labor pains trying to push that baby out.

  15. andrew hass says:

I’m fine with not seeing Bernadette giving birth but there could still be laughs leading up to the delivery.

  16. Timey says:

Oh, I don’t know. I think Raj as a Lamaze coach would have been great fun. Howard in the waiting room kept company by Leonard and Penny, then on a gurney, then waking in a bed next to new mother Bernadette, having missed all the fun. Amy and Sheldon working out his intimacy issues. Closing with Bernadette and Howard holding little baby at the hospital room window gazing below and smiling at the gang, including the guy who owns the comic book store, holding candles singing, Silent Night.”

  17. glad they didn’t overdo it and show all that
I don’t think the baby stuff has been very funny at all. Pretty much all that’s been funny this season is Shamy

  18. tsevca says:

Well, not every childbirth is full of gags and worth to be included in a sitcom.
