Chris Rock to Return to Stand-Up Comedy With Two Netflix Specials

Chris Rock is ready to bring the pain… again.

The Saturday Night Live alum is returning to stand-up comedy with two all-new specials on Netflix, the streaming service announced Thursday. And he’s getting paid a pretty penny to do it: Rock will be paid a total of $40 million for the specials, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The specials will mark Rock’s first stand-up shows in eight years; the first will tape next year, with a world tour to follow. (No premiere date has been set.)

Rock is one of the most influential stand-up comedians of all time, winning an Emmy for his 1996 HBO special Bring the Pain and a pair of Grammys for 1999’s Bigger & Blacker and 2004’s Never Scared. Since then, he’s concentrated on movies, with starring roles in Grown Ups, the animated Madagascar series, and the critically acclaimed Top Five, which he also wrote and directed. And oh yeah, he also hosted this year’s Academy Awards.

“Chris Rock is a beloved actor and director, and his remarkable stand-up makes him comic royalty,” Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos said in a statement. “There is no one like him, and Netflix offers the global platform and creative freedom that will serve as a perfect home for someone with his incredible talent.”

I hope he is funny like he was in Bring the Pain! I love Chris Rock, but I feel like he peaked with Bring the Pain.

  2. George says:

I love Netflix and what they’re doing. I’m just curious though where the hell are they getting all this money to make all these original content shows?? Especially the marvel ones. They have to be making serious money. 40 mil for Chris rock, I really hope they make something of his tour. More money more content and they’ve been killing the game.

  3. Aubrey says:
