Ratings: Supergirl Sticks CW Landing

Supergirl‘s transfer from CBS to The CW helped the latter network scale impressive ratings heights.

Monday’s Season 2 premiere drew 3 million viewers and a 1.1 18-49 demo rating, up triple digits compared to Crazy Ex-Girlfriend‘s performance in the Monday timeslot last fall. It also was The CW’s most-watched show in the Monday-at-8 pm perch in nearly eight years (since a 2008 Gossip Girl episode) and best 18-49 rating in six years (since a 2010 90210 episode).

Not surprisingly, Supergirl was down sharply vs. the 6.1 million/1.3 the show drew for its Season 1 finale on CBS.

TVLine readers gave the episode an average “A-” grade.

Other Monday highlights: After stumbling out of the gate last week, NBC’s Timeless dipped four tenths (from 1.9 to a 1.5), while ABC’s Conviction was flat (0.9). Both rookie 10 pm dramas were down among total viewers (Timeless from 7.6 million to 6.5 million and Conviction from 5.2 million to 4.7 million).

On Fox, Gotham (1.1) was up a tenth and Lucifer (1.1) was flat.

Lastly, on CBS, 2 Broke Girls‘ hour-long Season 6 premiere notched 6.4 million viewers and a 1.7 rating, up slightly vs. its Season 5 opener.

This is indeed good news for “Supergirl “. I hope it gets to sustain the ratings.

  2. Jason says:

I love the fact that ratings that would get a show canceled on one network, pretty much make it the number one show on another.

  3. Boone says:

So Timeless is good for now…

    • Michael Ausiello says:

No, unfortunately. I originally had it roughly flat in demo and viewers. It was actually down sharply in both categories. (Don’t shoot the messenger.)

    • arianeb says:

Timeless would do a lot better if they would just reveal what the actual premise of the show is. The episodes would have a lot more urgency if we actually knew if the main characters were actually doing the right thing or not.

  4. Oh no, I need Conviction to rise. I fall for this show, with those numbers ABC is gonna say goodbye to this :'(

  5. J says:

I really enjoyed Supergirl, Timeless and Conviction! I thought Timeless, while not perfect, felt very fun and definitely has potential. Conviction was a lot better than the premier.

  6. So does this mean a season 3 is possible?

  7. Ryan says:

So happy SG preformed well! I loved the episode.

  9. retsim says:

It may take time to build up more viewers but i am sure it will. Liked the start of season 2 with some new characters .Could be better than season 1.

  10. wrstlgirl says:

Conviction is awful, great cast but I can’t watch it. On the other hand, it’s competition Timeless, while still not he best show, keeps me entertained.

  11. ndixit says:

Such a shame about Timeless. It is so much fun but it doesn’t look like it’s going to make it.

  12. Phun says:

So happy SUPERGIRL did well on its season premiere! What a nice start to the season.

  13. kmw says:

Good for Supergirl did better than I expected. Even though Gotham was even both it and Lucifer are struggling. What to say about ABC at its 10 pm slot. Castle may have been expensive but if they had both leads it would be better than Conviction.

  14. The one character I like may not be back. Going to miss Maxwell Lord

  15. Max says:

I would rather watch Supergirl any day of the week over Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.
And wasn’t Tyler Hoechlin absolutely the perfect choice to play Superman? I would watch a Hoechlin/Superman spinoff hands down.

Timeless’s second episode let me down. Already formulaic.

  16. The Kaibosh says:

I’m glad they consider Supergirl successful for the CW. It should continue to find success there where it really should have been from beginning. But as for jumping up and down at these numbers: its kind of like celebrating a successful lemonade stand.

  17. Kevin K says:

The 10 pm Monday night time slot is going to be so competitive this season dating back four years ago when Castle, Hawaii Five-O and Revolution went at it.

  18. Kotocorn says:

well i like supergirl and think they should continue

  19. David Stewart says:

This is brilliant news vis a vis CW standards, but if 6 million watched the finale on CBS it absolutely floors me that the show can lose ~3million viewers just because they’re too lazy to turn the channel. Do they really just watch a show because of the the show preceding or following it? I’m aghast that people let the networks spoon feed their evenings to them like that.

  20. Mai says:

Supergirl’s CW premiere was great fun. Already much improved compared to much of season one. If it continues to be this entertaining and consistent, I hope it’ll have a long life on the CW.

  21. Bonesfan47 says:

what was the ratings for The Voice and DWTS? I don’t see them listed here and they usually are

  22. Boiler says:

Nice for 2 Broke Girls. ABC misses Castle, if Beckett around

  23. parstl says:

Great news for Supergirl. CW needs to stay and commit to the show and keep in mind during the fall and early winter that it’s competing with Monday night football.

  24. dude says:

I didn’t enjoy much of season 1 of Supergirl but hung in because of its great cast and the insanely likable Melissa Benoist and I’m glad I did. Season 2 looks to be everything Season 1 should have been. The writing feels sharper, the new characters are welcome additions to the show and the show seems to be more confident than ever. Glad that its ratings are doing well because it’s done a mighty good job at correcting course. Can’t wait for episode 2!

  25. coneyro says:

OMG…Now THAT is the Supergirl show I had imagined! What a difference a station change can make! This new version is so much more of everything I wanted.

Firstly, Thank you for splitting up Jimmy and Kara(for so many reasons). Introducing Superman into the mix was right on.. (Did they really reference him as Clark in front of the government workers.. Stop that… BTW, Tyler is adorable in the role. Lena Luthor…. Hurrah. Sorry to hear that Cat won’t be present, I like her..

The changes made, for the most part, have upped the show, for the better. Should have started on the C W in the beginning.

Looking forward to the crossover of all my favorite DC shows. Can’t wait to see how they pull off Supergirl coming to the other dimension where Flash, Arrow and LOT reside.

All in all, great episode. May it be the first of a long run.

  26. Peter Gbert says:

Super girl would have double plus the viewings on cbs. I almost misted it and would have I’d my son didn’t tell me it was on half way through. If the kept this on cbs they would have a lot more people viewing

  27. De bird says:

Hi, first of all I want you to know that I really do like Superman and Supergirl but when you are add in things like two women kissing ! Men and women having sexual intercourse and saying that the rate is 11+ and up !!!! I know for a fact I just want to see some nice clean superhero things you all are adding in people coming out the closet why us a series like superhero to do that why ???? I’m not even going to be able to look at Supergirl anymore and that’s a shame 😫 I know that right now in life everybody wants to except on the homosexual lesbian thing going on but not everybody wants to look at that and there’s been a lot of great programs that I just have to turn off because I do not want to look at porn on Reg tv . Take it to Cinemax or HBO . Dang I’m upset you all need to stop 😳😳😳😳
