Squirrel Girl on TV? Marvel Developing New Warriors Comedy Series

This is nuts: Marvel and ABC Studios are developing a New Warriors comedy series that would put the spotlight on little-known comic book heroine Squirrel Girl, TVLine has learned exclusively. Both Marvel and ABC Studios declined to comment, but sources confirm that the half-hour project is currently being shopped around to cable and streaming outlets.

Described as the junior version of The Avengers, the New Warriors are a superhero squad made up of teenagers, one of whom would include Doreen Green (aka Squirrel Girl). For the record, SG can do more than just communicate with the world’s vast squirrel population; she also possesses super-speed and strength.

Squirrel Girl — who in the comics would go on to serve as the nanny to Luke Cage and Jessica Jones’ daughter — made headlines recently when Pitch Perfect star Anna Kendrick expressed a desire to play the cheeky character on the big screen, telling Net A Porter, “My brother sent me a Squirrel Girl comic because he thinks I should. I don’t know what Squirrel Girl does other than be half squirrel, but I could be half squirrel!” (Avengers: Infinity War directors Joe and Anthony Russo in turn said Kendrick would be “perfect casting.”)

Press PLAY below to watch Squirrel Girl’s relatively recent appearance in Ultimate Spider-Man (voiced by Misty Lee), then scroll down to the comments and weigh in on the project!

Comments are monitored, so don’t go off topic, don’t frakkin’ curse and don’t bore us with how much your coworker’s sister-in-law makes per hour. Talk smart about TV!

We got a Squirrel Girl TV Show before we got an Agents of SHIELD Season 4 trailer?!

    • Mike says:

How did we “get” a Squirrel Girl TV Show? This is literally just a rumor about a show which may or may not happen. The S4 trailer is probably more effect heavy than usual because of Ghost Rider and therefore needs more time to prep.

  2. Shaun says:

    Heh,this should be fun.

  3. Rahajicho says:

Seems like it would fit well with Freeform’s Cloak & Dagger.

  4. I haven’t checked in here for a while since I thought it was
getting boring, but the last few posts are great quality so I
guess I’ll add you back to my everyday bloglist. You deserve it friend :)

  5. Ash says:

Hey Marvel how about a release date for Agents of SHIELD season 3 or any marvel netflix shows on dvd/ blu-ray, instead of creating new shows!!!

  6. Victor says:

    Not Damage Control ?

  7. But no X-Men? Good priorities Marvel.

  8. Pass, the only good thing about Marvel is the X-Men

    • Wordsmith says:

Wow, clearly you’ve been in a coma since about 2005. Welcome back to the world; quite a lot has changed.

That’s non-sense .Clearly i disagree with your view or comments. If you like x-men only from marvel that’s fine for you,but x-men is not the only good thing from marvel.Marvel has good things outside the x-men too.Marvel has other stories and heroes just as interesting or more interesting then the x-men.Marvel always had other really good stories outside of the x-men anyway.Personally i find the stories and heroes outside the x-men from marvel on average more interesting and better anyway. All my favorite marvel heroes are not x-men by the way so that’s another reason i am more into certain other marvel stories more then x-men stories. The Avengers teams and related avengers teams stories and heroes i tend find to be more interesting and better on average then x-men stories and related x-men teams and heroes.By the way two x-men tv shows are coming out.One is called legion and the other name is unknown for now,so there is no need to talk bad or incorrect stuff about other marvel teams, stories and heroes outside of the x-men.

  9. Lauren says:

Loeb needs to stop. I don’t wsnt another Marvel show if it prevents the chatacter from showing up in the big screen.

  10. Tom says:

This would be cool if Anna Kendrick would be able to play her still. Granted it sounds like they’d be going with a younger version, and I don’t see her doing tv so…

  11. Sounds cute, but what are they going to be able to do in 20 to 23 minutes? Because with commercials it won’t be 30 minutes, heck they don’t even give us that on Netflix, even though they have no commercials! So why not give it an hour, then it will at least have 40 to 43 minutes to work with! Maybe put it on Netflix too, then it might last longer than a few episodes, before being canceled, because everyone is watching a reality show!

  12. Charles says:

And the Shark has been jumped

  13. Ann VerWiebe says:

Maybe Squirrel Girl, Hellcat and She Hulk. I would definitely watch that!

  14. The ongoing North/Henderson “Unbeatable Squirrel Girl” comic series is an absolute triumph [and the driver behind the renewed interest in the character]. If, based on the fairly few SG appearances SG has made in the main Marvel comics or animation ‘verses, you’re unconvinced SG is a viable lead, get your eyeballs on a page or two of “Unbeatable…”. North & Henderson have created a fully-fleshed out character with heart, joy and kickassery (that’s a word, right?).

  15. Jim says:

Squirrel Girl? YES! New Warriors? Uhhh . . . no. No thanks. Leave them in the 90s where they belong. Just call the team Great Lakes Avengers like it’s supposed to be called!

  16. Isn’t squirrel girl a mutant?

    • Marcus says:

She’s a Human mutate. It’s a literary device that Marvel created to circumvent the Fox-owned Mutant properties of Marvel. The difference being that mutants are born with these inherent abilities or physical forms, whereas a human mutate is exposed to a mutagenic compound that changes them. That’s where Squirrel Girl falls.

      • Orannis says:

You’re half right. While not technically a mutant, she DID have her abilities since birth, but does not have the X-gene that identifies a “true” mutant, leaving her as more of a genetic anomaly.

  17. This could end up on Netflix to get a lighter tone than the Defenders/Punisher series and aim it for a younger audience.

  18. Doug says:

“Described as the junior version of The Avengers, the New Warriors are a superhero squad made up of teenagers”

“Joe and Anthony Russo in turn said Kendrick (age 31) would be “perfect casting.””

Besides, if they’re going to cast 30-somethings, Kate Micucci or Kristen Schaal would make way better Squirrel Girls. Both look squirrely, and both have the right level of annoying cutesiness.

Come on, girls. This Squirrel Girl is everything we want to be – strong, clever, able to mobilize vast numbers of supporters, cozy with acting alone and dangerous when we want to be. Better than that, everybody underestimates her (the ultimate advantage). We know what that’s like! Squirrel Girl for president!
