Arrow Boss Previews Season 5's 'Gritty' Flashbacks, 'Badass' Dolph Lundgren

When Arrow moves to Russia for its Season 5 flashbacks, it will make last year’s magical island adventures look like a picnic by comparison.

In exploring Oliver’s history with the infamous Bratva crime syndicate, “We really wanted to go gritty, dark, and make it feel very real,” showrunner Wendy Mericle tells TVLine.

“We’re dealing with the Bratva, and the Bratva is, as we all know, a pretty interesting and messed-up institution. I might get shot for saying that, but hey!” she adds with a laugh.

In order to make sure that the upcoming episodes stay true to that unflinching world, the creative team did their research. “Everyone on staff watched [the 2007 film] Eastern Promises,” Mericle says. “I watched documentaries about Bratva and how they operate in Russian prisons.”

But it’s not just crime bosses Oliver has to fear as he tries to keep his promise to ill-fated island pal Taiana, to tell her parents what happened to her and brother Vlad. A new Big Bad, played by Rocky IV opponent Dolph Lundgren, also awaits him in the flashbacks.

“[Dolph’s character] is a government strongman,” Mericle previews. “He is scary and formidable — and he had a role in some stuff with Taiana’s family last season. He’s a bit of a badass.” Ya think?

Arrow returns Wednesday, Oct. 5 at 8/7c on The CW, where it now leads into the freshman drama Frequency.

  1. Mary says:

The scar from where Yao Fei shot him through his right shoulder is missing, unless the picture is flipped.

  2. Wordsmith says:

So, given the Eastern Promises references and the allusions to an epic and unprecedented fight scene, what are the odds we’re going to get a no-holds-barred bath house/sauna brawl (in the buff) this season?

  3. Sam says:

Oh god, what happened to Stephen? That picture (which I seemingly can’t escape lately) makes it look like he literally has boobs. Just like straight up boobs.

  4. Geo says:

Ohmigod, more flashbacks, my favorite part of the show, I absolutely can’t wait… said nobody, ever.

  5. txwagg says:

Wendy ? Studying the history of Oliver Queen/Green Arrow, in order to prepare, write and honor the character “Arrow” is based on; instead of superfluous flashbacks with -0- continuity-might be really helpful :)

    • Windy & Guggy & Amell have said it more than once they could care less about the comics. I think the disaster of s3 & s4 make that obvious.

      • Westen says:

I’m not a comic book fan so I’m just fine with not everything or even very little going the same as the comics. This isn’t meant to be the same as the comics. The history of Oliver/The Green Arrow is what they choose it to be. If you want it be like the comics then read the comics.

  6. Joey Padron says:

Good preview about flashbacks in Russia and Dolph’s character. Excited to watch new season in October!

  7. George H. says:

Last year’s flashbacks really turned me off from Arrow. Eventually stopped watching the show because of them because they felt so monotonous.
