Olympics 2016: What Was Your Favorite Moment From Day 8 of the Rio Games?

Tennis player Monica Puig made Puerto Rico proud on Saturday, earning the island its first-ever gold medal by defeating Germany’s Angelique Kerber in the women’s singles tournament.

Puig, who entered the Rio Games ranked just 34th in the world, defied all odds by winning 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 during Day 8 of the Summer Olympics. The gold medalist looked just as thrilled for her victory as her many fans in attendance, and in our absolute favorite moment, reflected on how Puerto Rico needed this win just as much as she did in a post-match interview on Bravo.

Puig, of course, was referring to the island’s current financial setbacks, which were recently addressed on an episode of HBO’s Last Week Tonight With John Oliver with an original song by Hamilton‘s Lin-Manuel Miranda. The Tony winner, also of Puerto Rican descent, was among the first to react to Puig’s history-making win on Twitter:

Here are some other buzzed-about moments from Day 8 of the Rio games:

* Michael Phelps won his 23rd career gold medal as part of the men’s 4×100-meter medley relay. During the event — the last before Phelps’ retirement — fellow swimmer Ryan Murphy shattered records by completing the 100-meter backstroke in 51.85 seconds.

* Elaine Thompson of Jamaica stunned onlookers when she clinched gold in the women’s track and field 100-meter final, beating defending champ (and fellow Jamaican) Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, who ultimately came in third behind second-place finisher Tori Bowie of Team USA.

* Usain Bolt (aka the fastest man alive) came in first during Round 1 of the men’s 100-meter dash, and will now advance to the semifinal.

* Tennis fave Rafael Nadal of Spain lost his men’s singles semifinal to Juan Martín del Potro of Argentina.
