Designated Survivor: Virginia Madsen Joins ABC's Kiefer Sutherland Drama

Kiefer Sutherland hasn’t even been sworn in yet, and he already has a challenger for the office of President of the United States — in Virginia Madsen.

In the freshman ABC drama Designated Survivor (premiering Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 10/9c), 24 alum Sutherland plays Tom Kirkman, a lowly Secretary of Housing and Urban Development who, as the “designated survivor” during the State of the Union Address, finds himself next in line to occupy the Oval Office following a terrorist attack on the Capitol.

Per our sister site Deadline, Madsen (who is currently playing the family matriarch on CBS’ American Gothic) will heavily recur on the series as — and boy is this a name! —Kimble Hookstraten, the “designated survivor” from the rival political party. A conservative Congresswoman, she throws her support to Kirkman… for now, while harboring a quite different true agenda.

Madsen’s previous TV credits also include Elementary (where she is set for an encore as Captain Gregson’s girlfriend), Witches of East End, Hell on Wheels, The Event and Scoundrels.

Comments are monitored, so don’t go off topic, don’t frakkin’ curse and don’t bore us with how much your coworker’s sister-in-law makes per hour. Talk smart about TV!

What does this mean for American Gothic?

I believe American Gothic was planned only for 10 episodes as a summer show, but I may be wrong.

      • 13-episodes actually. I’ve always enjoyed these mystery-thriller type shows and so if it’s renewed I can see the series going the anthology route and telling a completely new dark story in future seasons. You’ll need other top-tier talent like Virginia Madsen to join the show certainly and I believe it could happen. Until then I’ll just continue enjoying season 1 as a self-contained story. #AmericanGothic

American Gothic has already finished production, and in the off chance it is renewed, she only has a recurring role on Designated Survivor and the two shows have different shooting schedules.

I like Virginia Madsen so I’m glad to see her aboard . But did we need to give away the fact that she has a “quite different true agenda”? Didn’t really spoil the show for me(I’m still going to watch EVERY second)but still….

As the “designated survivor” of the rival party the viewer was probably going to wonder whether the character was shaddy anyway…maybe we can expect the writers to inverse/reverse tropes. Anyway, I like V.Madsen so she’s one more reason to watch.
