Donald Trump Stamps Himself 'Law and Order Candidate' in RNC Speech — Read 12 Memorable Quotes, Grade It!

“I know words. I have the best words,” Donald J. Trump so famously said on the campaign trail late last year.

On Thursday, the businessman-turned-reality-star-turned-presidential-candidate put his nouns and verbs and adjectives to the test on the closing night of the Republican National Convention in Cleveland, Ohio.

In a speech that pushed Law and Order harder than NBC’s promo department in the mid-2000s, Trump also tried to impress upon voters the idea of his honesty in relation to his rival Hillary Clinton (without once resorting to his oft-used “Crooked Hillary” jab); his concerns about illegal immigration, including violent crimes that have/could be perpetrated by convicts from foreign countries and Islamic terrorists; his committment to the idea of “Americanism” over “globalism”; his hope to renegotiate trade deals in a way that will “protect our jobs and stand up to countries that cheat”; his desire to reduce taxes and simplify the tax code; and his goal of replacing “our beloved Justice [Antonin] Scalia” on the Supreme Court with “a person of similar views, principles and judicial philosophies — very important.”

Here’s a sampling of a dozen of the most surprising, provocative and memorable quotes from what, for Trump, was a restrained, insult-free speech, albeit one that was light on specific, detailed policy proposals. (Hat tip to Politico, which leaked a draft of Trump’s remarks in advance.)

* “ISIS has spread across the region, and the entire world. Libya is in ruins, and our Ambassador and his staff were left helpless to die at the hands of savage killers. Egypt was turned over to the radical Muslim brotherhood, forcing the military to retake control. Iraq is in chaos. Iran is on the path to nuclear weapons. Syria is engulfed in a civil war, and a refugee crisis now threatens the West. After fifteen years of wars in the Middle East, after trillions of dollars spent and thousands of lives lost, the situation is worse than it has ever been before. This is the legacy of Hillary Clinton: death, destruction, terrorism and weakness.”

* “Big business, elite media and major donors are lining up behind the campaign of my opponent because they know she will keep our rigged system in place. They are throwing money at her because they have total control over every single thing she does. She is their puppet, and they pull the strings.”

* When the FBI Director says that the Secretary of State was ‘extremely careless’ and ‘negligent,’ in handling our classified secrets, I also know that these terms are minor compared to what she actually did. They were just used to save her from facing justice for her terrible, terrible crimes. In fact, her single greatest accomplishment may be committing such egregious crime and getting away with it – especially when others, who have done far less, have paid so dearly.”

* In this race for the White House, I am the law and order candidate. The irresponsible rhetoric of our President, who has used the pulpit of the presidency to divide us by race and color, has made America a more dangerous environment than frankly I have ever seen and anybody in this room has ever watched or seen. This administration has failed America’s inner cities.” (Editor’s note: O_o)

* “Every action I take, I will ask myself: Does this make better for young Americans in Baltimore, in Chicago, in Detroit, in Ferguson, who have really, in every way, folks, the same right to live out their dreams as any other child America?”

* “As your President, I will do everything in my power to protect our LGBT citizens from the violence and oppression of a hateful foreign ideology — believe me.” (Editor’s note: But what about the extreme, anti-gay rhetoric of his own party’s platform?)

* “We must have the best gathering of intelligence anywhere in the world — the best. We must abandon the failed policy of nation-building and regime change that Hillary Clinton pushed in Iraq, in Libya, in Egypt and in Syria. Instead, we must work with all of our allies who share our goal of destroying ISIS and stamping out Islamic terrorism and doing it now, doing it quickly. We’re going to win! We’re going to win fast!”

* “We must immediately suspend immigration from any nation that has been compromised by terrorism until such time as proven vetting mechanisms have been put in place. We don’t want them in our country!”

* “We are going to build a great border wall to stop illegal immigration, to stop the gangs and the violence, and to stop the drugs from pouring into our communities!”

* “I am going to turn our bad trade agreements into great trade agreements… No longer will we enter into these massive transactions, with many countries, that are thousands of pages long, and which no one from our country even reads or understands. We are going to enforce all trade violations against any country that cheats. This includes stopping China’s outrageous theft of intellectual property, along with their illegal product dumping, and their devastating currency manipulation.”

* “We will repeal and replace disastrous Obamacare! You will be able to choose your own doctor again. And we will fix TSA at the airports — which is a total disaster!”

* “An amendment pushed by Lyndon Johnson many years ago threatens religious institutions with a loss of their tax-exempt status if they openly advocate their political views — their voice has been taken away. I am going to work very hard to repeal that language and protect free speech for all Americans.”

Is this what Mussolini was like?

    • Swear says:

      And Hillary is any better?

      • Ricky Lee Jones says:

        A million times better

        • Lor Delpus says:

Write in Bernie. Hillary is NOT “a million times better” than Trump. She and Trump are the two most loathsome people ever nominated, and whichever of them is worse, the difference is about 9 decimal places out.

Trump gave a good speech. So did Obama in his campaigns. Both were long on rhetoric and short on substance, but substance doesn’t seem to matter anymore. Good delivery means more than a good script, and anyway, it’s all just acting. If giving a good speech were all it took to be a good president, Obama would have actually improved the country.

          • Becca says:

Trump did what he always does, panders. His speech was nothing but angry, hateful rhetoric. It focused more on his opponent than on his actual plan for the presidency because he doesn’t have one. He is the least equipped person ever nominated for president by a major party and his speech was largely filled with inaccuracies to feed into the scary “other” that republicans feel they must be protected from.

          • Open your eyes! says:

He spoke the truth. It wasn’t all rainbows and unicorns — but, the world is in total disarray. Hillary will hug gays and blacks and tell illegals that they deserve to be here. She’ll talk about ‘building bridges not walls’, meanwhile, nothing will change. Illegals will continue to flood our cities, crime will continue to infest our minority communities, middle class Americans will continue to be in a race to the bottom, corporations will continue to move out of the country, Iran will accumulate nuclear weapons, more jobs will be lost to cheap foreign labor, we will continue to be dependent on Middle East oil – Hillary’s taken $145,000,000 in donations to her foundation from middle east interests to assure that happens, and Wall Street will continue to steal from the American public through their lies and lack of rules.

His speech was real. Hilary is a liberal puppet. He definitely got THAT right….

          • K says:

You can hate Hillary Clinton all you want, but if you think Donald Trump is not a lot worse, then you haven’t been paying attention. Do you really think the Supreme Court would look the same under Trump and Clinton? And even if Clinton might make decisions you don’t agree with, does the thought of Trump making decisions in a crisis when millions of lives might be at stake not terrify you? Even if you saw no big differences in their policies (and I disagree with that), do you really think Trump’s personality does not make him a lot more dangerous than Clinton?

I remember people thinking that there wasn’t much of a difference between Bush and Gore. They were clearly proven wrong. And as much as I personally loathe George W. Bush, I’d take him over Trump in a heartbeat.

          • J.H. Hibbs says:

So you are willing to vote for a candidate who is a Socialist on the outside but is a practicing Marxist Communist. So all of those Americans (OF ALL RACES, CREEDS AND GENDERS) died fighting communist so you and people like you can spit on their graves just so you can get more free stuff from the government. WORK FOR IT. Beleive it or not, if you are a hard worker, a large percentage of companies actually reward them because they are an asset. and i dont want to hear WHITE PRIVILEDGE, thats B.S.
If that existed, then why is their poor white people? Why are their homeless white people? When a white person gets turn down from a job? Can they claim its a breach of white priviledge? Why do white people starve or die of thirst or even die?
Its just Democratic Propoganda to hide their racist past. Read who started the KKK. Read what percentage of democrats voted for the civil rights amendment compared to the percentage of republicans?
What Democratic Vice President’s father filibustered the Civil Right Amendment? Who freed the slaves? Who voted against that amendment?
Starting in 1946, what political party always had Womans Rights on their platform? I will give you a hint, it wasnt Democrats.
What president in the last 30 years actually granted amnesty to illegal immigrants? Another hint, NOT A DEMOCRAT
In 2006, Why did Democrats not vote for Bushs immigration bill? Something is better than nothing, RIGHT?
If they are so Pro everything, why during the 2008-2010 SUPER MAJORITY DEMOCRATIC CONTROLLED CONGRESS, why didnt they pass GUN CONTROL, GAY MARRIAGE, AMNESTY? A super majority of Democrats mean that even though the republicans can stall for a little bit, the democrats had enough votes to override Discussions, and vote for anything they want because you needed 60% to close all discussion and vote bills in.

      • Zoe says:

WAY better. At the very least, Hillary has actual qualifications and isn’t a dictator.

      • BlittleU says:

        So, sooooo much better!!!

      • Angela says:

Uhhhh, yeah. It really shouldn’t even be a contest.

  2. Greg says:

Even more terrifying than Trump is that there are people deranged enough to support him.

    • maggie says:

So true, and you can’t get them to listen to the fact that he has no real ideas or solutions.

Any candidate who says: “I alone can fix things,” is frightening. That is what a dictator always claims.

  3. Greg says:

Yes, a thousand times yes. She looks like mother teresa in comparison.

  4. SG says:

Hell no they both suck. Giant Meteor is preferable at this point.

  5. Angela says:

But what about the extreme, anti-gay rhetoric of his own party’s platform?
    .
THIS. Seriously, holy crap. His own freaking VP has actively supported all of those anti-LGBT policies and legislation. If something ever happened to Trump, Pence would be next in line to take over. People say Trump won’t actually follow through on his more insane policies, and perhaps that’d be true. But Pence? He sure as hell would.
    .
As for the rest of the speech, if people honestly believe a wall along our border will stop illegal immigrants coming in, I would like to introduce them to the concept of planes and tunnels. I’m also curious about how Obama himself has negatively affected race relations, since every speech I’ve heard him give seems to very much indicate otherwise.
    .
Also, the GOP go on and on all the time about how America is “the greatest country in the world”. But all this week they’ve been talking about “making America great again”. I thought it was already great in their eyes?

    • Lor Delpus says:

WHAT “anti-gay rhetoric” did you hear? Wanting marriage to be a one-man-one-woman thing – like it’s been in almost every society throughout most of human history – isn’t exactly encouraging people to throw gays off rooftops.

In every ugly encounter between cops and blacks, Obama fanned the flames of racial divisiveness. “The police acted stupidly.” “If I had a son…” What racial amity there was before Obama’s term has gone into the toilet since. The epidemic of deliberate ambushes on cops was never a thing before – sure, it happened now and then before Obama, but there never was a fad for it before.

You’re being deliberately obtuse about the “make America great again” thing.

      • Becca says:

And you’re being deliberately obtuse about the discrimination and injustice that is rampant through American history. Unless you are a straight, Christian, white male, the past decades weren’t great. You were seen as less or dirty or shameful. While we still have work to do, going back even ten years is dangerous to most groups of people in the US

      • Angela says:

WHAT “anti-gay rhetoric” did you hear? Wanting marriage to be a one-man-one-woman thing – like it’s been in almost every society throughout most of human history – isn’t exactly encouraging people to throw gays off rooftops.
        .
I’m talking about the GOP’s own freaking platform. They support traditional marriage. Mike Pence supports “gay conversion” therapy, and supported laws that would allow people to deny someone service based on their sexual orientation. Huckabee has made nasty remarks about transgender people in the past, and this very week there was an interview with Ben Carson where he dismissed the concept of being transgender because “you don’t know who’s a boy and who’s a girl” anymore.
        .
And so freaking what if marriage has been between one man and one woman throughout much of history? That doesn’t automatically make it the lone way to go. At one time marriage meant women were nothing more than property for men, too. At one time interracial couples weren’t allowed to get married. Good thing we didn’t let those stick because, hey, “that’s just how it’s been throughout history”. Besides that, Trump has been married multiple times AND had affairs. He’s not living up to the “traditional marriage” ideal, either. But he’s straight, so I guess he gets a pass, right?
        .
And your comment about how defending “traditional” marriage isn’t like throwing gay people off rooftops is ridiculous. Ooh, great, they’re not threatening their lives. By supporting legislation that would deny them the right to get married, that same-sex couples aren’t worthy of the same civil rights as straight couples. That’s not exactly much of a step up in terms of human decency. Straight people and religious people do not “own” the concept of marriage, and they need to get over it and quit trying to deny people the civil rights they deserve to have.

In every ugly encounter between cops and blacks, Obama fanned the flames of racial divisiveness. “The police acted stupidly.” “If I had a son…” What racial amity there was before Obama’s term has gone into the toilet since. The epidemic of deliberate ambushes on cops was never a thing before – sure, it happened now and then before Obama, but there never was a fad for it before.
        .
Well, I know this might come as a shock, but sometimes the police HAVE acted stupidly. Just because someone’s a cop doesn’t mean they’re automatically above criticism. Look at the most recent story out of Miami that’s making the rounds. The black man in that video did everything he was supposed to do. He followed all the cop’s orders, didn’t have any weapons on him at all. He was merely trying to help a patient who’d escaped.. And he still got shot. That is stupid. People really need to learn that criticizing the police doesn’t mean hating them or disrespecting the profession as a whole.
        .
Obama has expressly condemned the actions of the people who’ve recently murdered police officers.
        .
And “never a fad” for it before? I suppose you missed out on the Rodney King riiots in the early 1990s? The song “Cop Killer” that caused a lot of controversy when it came out? The violence between cops and black people in the 1960s? This problem has been going on for ages because we have a very deep-seeded history of issues with race in this country, and those issues still exist, much as people like to pretend otherwise.
        .
You’re being deliberately obtuse about the “make America great again” thing.
        .
How? Please do explain to me how our country can both be the greatest country in the world and a country that needs to be made great again at the same time.

      • K says:

Maybe you should ask the Log Cabin Republicans who called the GOP platform “the most anti-LGBT platform the Republican party has ever had.”

And honestly the only thing President Obama has done to fan the flames of racial divisiveness is being black. It’s hardly his fault that people like Donald Trump couldn’t even accept the fact that he is American. If understanding and acknowledging what black people are facing every day in this country is being divisive to you, then the problem does not lie with him.

      • maggie says:

“Wanting marriage to be a one-man-one-woman thing”

An admitted adulterer on his 3rd wife doesn’t get to claim marriage is between one man and one woman. Sanctity of marriage means nothing to him.

        • But it means a lot to Hilary and Bill? Bill sexually harassed and had affairs with dozens of women throughout his adult life and politically career and Hilary was right there alongside him, bullying the women into remaining silent, covering the affairs up, etc. I don’t like Trump or Hilary, but at least be fair when discussing the candidates (I.E. both suck).

          • Katherine215 says:

Good thing Bill’s not standing up there waxing poetic about the sanctity of marriage then, isn’t it? The point is that it’s hypocritical at best for Trump to talk about it when he’s on his 3rd marriage. But hey, logic is dumb, right?

  6. Ricky Lee Jones says:

No Drumpf, our country is not as bad as you make it out to be but if godforbid you are elected, it will be much much worse.

  7. D says:

I’ve never been happier to be a Canadian. I’m not a liberal supporter, so I wasn’t happy with our election outcome, but I’ll take Trudeau any day over your two choices. Good luck neighbors haha

  8. Wordsmith says:

Pretty much every one of these bullet points makes me angry.
Either I disagree outright, or the goal is so vague and unattainable that they’re pretty much just pander-y nonsense.

    • Lor Delpus says:

Yepperz… he should have gone with “Hope and Change” because that’s specific and, as it turns out, attainable – if you make something worse, you have changed it.

      • Becca says:

Just about every statistic shows Obama has improved the state of the US after the disastrous Bush administration, but yeah definitely worse.

      • maggie says:

“Hope and Change” was Obama’s campaign slogan, like “Make America Great Again” is Trump’s. But Obama actually gave specific goals and steps to accomplish them in his speeches and position statements. Trump is vague on his plans, often contradicting himself, sometimes giving different positions in the same speech. Trump has not told us how he plans to accomplish ending crime and violence in America quickly. It would be worth a Nobel Peace Prize if he really has a solution for that.

Trump has not said how he’s going to force companies to move their manufacturing back to America. After his daughter, Ivanka, gave her speech, she tweeted out where people could buy the dress she was wearing. It’s an “Ivanka Trump” brand dress, and is NOT made in the USA. Just like her dad, most of the items sold with her name on them aren’t made in America. If Trump can’t stop his own daughter from making their merchandise in foreign countries, how is he going to stop anyone else? He didn’t even stop making his own merchandise in foreign countries.

  9. Brian says:

It be nice if Michael Slezak wrote an article about Hilary Clinton next week so all the people who don’t like her or her policies can comment.

    • Lor Delpus says:

Will he put those snarky editorial asides in his Hillary article, ya think?

      • Becca says:

TVline isn’t exactly a place most people go for fair and unbalanced news. But I’m sure that you consider Fox News a bastion of impartiality

        • I love it that everyone always rips on Fox News. I don’t watch it regularly by any means, but the fact that there is ONE out of all of the media outlets (ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, MSNBC, moat newspapers, all late night talk shows, 95% of Hollywood, etc.) that doesn’t have a liberal bias and everyone calls it out is hilarious.

          • Becca says:

If they had a different tag line and if it wasn’t a consistent finding that their viewers were less informed on issues than those that don’t watch the news, maybe they wouldn’t get ripped on as much

    • Mary says:

He probably will and that hasn’t stopped many of you in these articles so I don’t see your gripe. Take Hillary out of the picture – in all seriousness why would you think this Man is Presidential material? I can tell you why he won’t and it has nothing to do with being PC. I want a President who is diplomatic. I want a President who represents ALL citizens. I want a President who thinks before he speaks and comes across as a MATURE adult. I want a President who doesn’t instill fear but helps calms during the turbulent times. I want a President who understands that the Country was based on immigration and has a clue that a few bad ones doesn’t represent the masses. I could go on but you get my drift. Now explain away and hate for the establishment is not an answer because he has benefited from the loopholes of that establishment and there is no way that will change if he is elected.

  10. RedHotz says:

Think Trump might want to read the decrees or by laws the Republicans have set for this years election as to what they plan to have happen! One is a Constitutional Amendment saying that the only real marriage is one between a man and woman. There are a whole bunch of other things that are just totally WOW!
No way in hell I would have ever voted for Trump for his stances but also for him getting behind the RNC also they both are just gross!

  11. CK says:

He’s trying to position himself as the “Law and Order” candidate, yet in this speech alone, he’s accused the FBI director of abdicating the law to protect Hillary Clinton and pretty pledged unquestioned devotion to the police even in instances where they’ve err’ed. He’s accused the Attorney General of accepting a bribe and has had questioned the federal judiciary. That’s not respecting “Law and Order”.

He says that he’s going to get rid of special interests, yet Christie was telling donors just this week that he would change civil service laws so that corporate interests can themselves work as civil servants and write regulations. This was a speech full of dog whistles, contradictions, and lies.

    • Mary says:

Ironic isn’t it that he proclaims to be the law and order man yet he has more lawsuits than most business owners. Talk about bribing wasn’t he just recently accused of doing that with the Florida AG. That was a speech full of rhetoric with nothing of substance to back it up.

  12. Jake says:

    #triggered

  13. Hap. Vet. says:

Berlin wall all over again???? Trump is “Crazy”

    • J.H. Hibbs says:

Berlin wall again? Have you ever talked to a western german and an eastern german during that time? I have. It was a wall that stood between a COMMUNIST GERMANY and a Democratic Socialistic Germany. It was the communists who were shooting their own people for trying to go over the wall. The Eastern germans wanted freedom from the Communists. Hear their stories. A border wall and the berlin wall are like apples and oranges.
      Reasons for a wall:
      A) Mexico isnt communistic. Its democratic. A place where they, just like us, vote for President and their body of government. So here is a question why didnt these maybe 20 million mexicans try to vote for change in their own government first? Its a hard road at first but we did it here. We have enacated change for good and bad. Mexico could be like the US or Canada.

      B) There are a BILLION muslims. There is a radical faction who wants America destroyed. You and me both, if you go over and tell them that you are an american but a Democrat, they still will kill you. So out of that BILLION , how many are radical?
      1%= 10 million
      .5%=5 million
.1%= 1 million radical jihadists. And you think they won’t try to sneak in and try to kill us?

      C) i have known CHRISTIAN Egyptians that left their country because they were threatened either leave or die. They have missing eyes and burned faces and scars. Don’t you think that are vast amount of land isnt appealing to our enemies
Go and talk with people , REAL PEOPLE, not liberal blogs or left leaning media. I talk with people, ALOT OF THE MEDIA ARE NOT REPORTING PROPERLY.

  14. J. H. Hibbard says:

I see a note how it state the anti-gay rhetoric of Trumps party, the republicans. Uummmm you all seem to forget that about 4 years ago, the democrats were anti gay marriage too. It was only when there was a fear of losing the presidential election that they changed. Remember in 2008 to 2010. President Obama had a super majority in Congress. Why didnt they pass gay marriage rights? Dont say republicans would stop it. Because read what a super majority is.
Lastly, I’m a republican and a huge majority of us beleive just as democrats do, that gays should never be discriminated against. Period. As for the gay marriage question, just like the democrats are, we are too evolving on the gay marriage question. So ask real people instead of the Global Elite Propoganda Book.

  15. Sarah says:

The thing any outsider can see, that aparently too many Anericans can’t, is that Trump is just telling people what they want to hear. He’s not telling THE truth, he’s not even telling HIS truth – he probably doesn’t believe a word of it, and he definitely won’t hold himself too it once elected. He and his cronies have got people so fixated on Hilary’s lies, but they refuse to see the lies and BS right in front of them.
All they would really have to do is look at the UK: the Leave campaign was run as the spitting image of the Trump campaign, playing on encouraging and legitimizing prejudices, they riled into action the people who had previously been (rightly) told, “shut up, you’re prejudices are not ok” and manipulated these people into doing their bidding – then as soon as they got what they wanted, every one of them abandoned their promises and basically admitted they were lies anyway. Remember the bus? They literally drove around a bus promising £350 million a week in savings they would put into healthcare instead, and the second the vote passed the most prominent Leave campaigners not only admitted it wasn’t true, they tried to say they never said it, that was “the campaign’s” claim…
Of course, direct evidence that nothing Trump says is true, including himself claiming the exact opposite thing on consecutive days, has got through to them yet, so this won’t either. As a recent study proved (what anyone with a brain already knew), people only accept evidence that proves what they already believe, not what proves them wrong.
Unfortunately for America, I see a whole lot of people there waking up the day after the election incredulously saying, just like they did in the UK, “We were lied to!!!”…
